Phil's words at the beginning were the highlight of the evening. it went seriously downhill from there. the crowd was super annoying. people talked through the whole show and there was no safe haven from the talkers. they were EVERYWHERE. it was quite ironic that the people immediately behind me were yacking on and on for multiple songs about how "incredible" the show was. evidently so incredible that talking about the show was more interesting to them than actually listening to the show. it got so bad that i had to turn around and point blank tell them to SHUT THE F%$K UP!!!!! (but of course i said it with lots of love) :-)
as for the performance, it was just as bad as the crowd. by far the worst set i've seen at TXR. Rider and Viola were good, and Loser had it's moments, but the band was flat and the playing was very uninspired. Jackie looked bored most of the night and Molo (who is one of my all-time favorite drummers) was very "un-Molo like". he normally drives a band with expert precision, but last night Molo's mojo was nowhere to be found. sometimes the magic just doesn't happen and last night was one of thiose nights.

Rob: thanks for adding some details and notes to the setlist.
You bet. Sorry you did not enjoy your evening. I understand there was at times some janky moments, but anytime Phil & Molo are holding down the back beat, the train keeps a rolling.
Brian's vocal on the faster version of Cold Rain & Snow was spot on, I love his voice. Jackie was exhausted and it showed, but he rallied on So Many Roads and loved his keyboard fills on the Viola Lee. Mark nailed to guitar leads in Loser and his voodoo growl on the last verse was powerful.
The opening remarks from Phil were deep and heartfelt. I loved watching the responses on some of my friends faces while he shared. Very special.
Great to see Mike Gordon from Phish passing out cupcakes, then hopping on stage after the show and drooling over Phil's new rig. I am sure they were having a high tech conversation, clearly Mike was fascinated by what he saw. So were we...
Everything Phil does musically comes from a place of making the event special. Always. Thank you Phil!
despite my opinion of the crowd and the performance i enjoyed the evening. Phil's opening remarks alone were worth attending the show.
i also think Phil did his best to make the event special, but things don't always work out as planned and bands have off nights.
Jake - I've found this tactic very effective. Used it at the beginning of the 2nd set (acoustic) of a CSN show at Bethel Woods, where the 2 women behind us would not shut up. After the 2nd tune, I turned to them & said "Excuse me, but if the band is too loud, and making it difficult for you ladies to chat, we can ask them to turn it down." I got applause from about a dozen other people, the gals turned beet red, and peace reigned for the duration.
I think shows with a lot of people on stage are harder to pull off. I have purposely chosen Rambles that have fewer musicians. Less cluster-f*ck and I think they can handle more complicated pieces of music.
Thank you all for the reviews~ setlist. A link to recording would also be swell.
RIP Jer

pure gold!
We all have expierenced this (people talking during the show) over the years and Marc is right on. We'll probably never understand it. However, I recently found some peace on this topic at a recent Coney Island Furthur show. A mother who was sitting behind us, turned to her son before the show and said "We do not speak while the band is playing...we LISTEN to the story being told and we imagine the story in our heads." Maybe it starts there. Wish I thought of that when my kids were small. Peace
every child shold be so lucky to have a mom like that!!!
that kid is lucky to have a mom that introduces him to the way to enjoy music.
