Surprised theres not more excitement for this show. Especially with the special guest who do you think it will be? Im thinking Peter Rowan for a bluegrass set maybe Elvis.Really looking forward to tonight especially after a phenominal performance friday night.

Warren Haynes is in Las Vegas at the Rock & Roll fantasy camp Nov. 7-11 so he won't be available till Mon. Jimmy Herring and Victor Wooten are at BB King's tonight. Depending what time they play there's a chance they could get over to the Roseland. Chris Robinson just played Irving Plaza the last 2 nights so I would say Chris is the odds on favorite.

Sounds like Jimmy Herring is just a cab ride away. Is there a different special guest every night.? I'm watching early games at Soldier McGahees on 83rd ans amsterdam. We were thinking of moving to The Irish Pub on 54th for 4 pm. Friday Wellmont was fun, only complaint is that JK was a little undervolumed, even Jackie Green was louder on lead. Trey or Herring would be super cool

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Alan Powell (Rippleish20) on Sunday, November 11, 2012 - 02:02 pm: Edit Post

Trey would be cool but I don't think they need another guitarist. Another singer or a horn player would make more sense...

Horn would be cool. I guess i just don't want another singer songwriter like chris robinson

What can I say? Two warm up sets and a monster 3rd (though I came in near the end of the Bird Song). John sang most of Stairway w/Stanley doing 1 verse (I think). Jackie didn't do any of the Stairway verses. As soon as I heard SJ was the guest I called the Stairway, as he often performs it, but coming out of Dark Star was just jaw dropping.

I wouldn't call it a Dark Star Refrain. They never finished the 2nd verse. They just did the Mirror Shatters lines and then (I think) that's where they went into that super funky jam which eventually led into the Watchtower. Then at the end they just did the "Shall we go" part. Must have been planned that way.

I'm digging the Beatles and Band covers. Would love to see John sing Rick Danko's Twilight, like Jerry used to do circa 1991. That would be oh so sweet.

The Stairway and Morning Dew were tremendous. Of course, I'm just speaking about the performance. The days where the music would transport the audience into an upwardly spiraling psychedelic vortex are long gone. I guess there were some polite golf claps here and there. Watchtower would have been pretty hot too if there was some audience participation.

I don't know. I'm happy for the fine music, and I don't fault the crowd for aging, but it just bothers me that it doesn't seem like anyone in the audience even remembers anything about that magical energy channeling between the audience and the band. I mean, after a hot solo you're supposed to clap and cheer and acknowledge it so maybe the musician will do more of that type of jamming, right? Forget about channeling energy... that's advanced stuff, but I mean this crowd doesn't seem to remember even basic rock 'n' roll etiquette like applauding a hot solo, and that's just bullshit.

Otherwise, they seemed very well behaved. No out of control blabbing by me. I didn't see any security hassels whatsoever. People were smoking at will. The room was a little crowded, but not really bad. Phil was true to his word and the set breaks were pretty short. I guess the encore ended right about 11:35.

I don't know if it was the type of set where you'd applaud every solo. People were simply stunned, like the old days with everyone dosed. Just my opinion, you can evaluate it yourselves from the video...

I agree with this.

What a marathon show. Very slight hint of cheese during Stairway To Heaven but all in all a nicely paced and performed show. They are really rolling with the obscure covers. I knew The Band song because I love Stage Fright but I consider myself a medium to big fan of Van Morrison and I didn't recognize that song even though I own the album.. Not much to add or say. Fun stuff. So much less predictable than Furthur. Walked in at just before 7pm -- no line, no security search at all. Waltzed in.

Thanks TRob!

I wasn't there obviously but in general "rock n roll ettiquette" is practiced less by younger audience members who think the 90's were the best days of GD...

now I've gone and done it, (obligatory 'get off my lawn' comment here)

Being at 100's of shows, as a young fan and an older one- i agree age can slow you down, but the fact that you are going to see phil is in itself searching for that magic that we all felt at shows from time to time. Many hings influence my experiences but I have to disagree that the energy, sharing, and love between the band and the fans is not there. I notice a disconnect at some shows, less emotion and more accuracy in playing (always the case) but there are times when i am completely "transported" or "blown away" by what phil/furthur are bringing. Every new years has been amazing since '09 and i would say the same for red rocks this year and last. I have th most amazing experences when i am with my headie friends from boulder, co, who i had the good fortune of meeting at shows! when people have best friends to share thee experiences with- it ups the energy and sharing in itself. You need more fun people to go with:-) I will never get off of this bus- too many great times and great friends!!! God Bless the Beauty of the grateful dead!!

Terrific vibe/crowd considering...CRITICISM of ROSELAND...Do not rope off second seating balconey only for VIPs..save some space/seats for some of us old enough to have seen Jerry , as Roseland used to do ...audience PACKED on the floor, too much heat, beer, people passing out around us around us...
Stairway To Heaven wrapped in the folds of a potent Dark Star, Strawberry Fields to die for..!

Overall a very good show, but for me the pacing made me a bit off because of the three set split with very short first and second set. Also, either a lot of H or special K or whatever it was, but people passing out, in general too many people in a dazed stupor for such a tight space...and hot, lack of good dance room. At any rate...
Good jam in Alligator and Chimenti just pushed and pulled Franklins into monster jam...excellent! I loved the Dweller song, real good jam between JK and Chimenti and went straight to the bridge, which is in a minor key, John really pulled them out of the jam super-tight...loved it. The Doin that Rag jam was clean and standard (for that number anyway) and good for dancing, but not much more power in 2nd, good sound though for sure!

3rd SET SMOKED at certain points! The opening jam I was second row front of JK and the chemistry between the guitarists was AMAZING!!! The jam was soooooooo good. Get it, put on high def headset and listen CLOSELY!!! The artistry of weaving leads does not get more professional! And of course, taking that into Mountains lent itself to another round of that artistry in between verse. They continued that some with TOO, but it seemed like Jordan got lost, Jackie and John tried to coax him on, but he didn't fit back in with them as well, still very good.
At that point I went back for more dance room fully expecting Dark Star, and got it! Never expected Stairway cause I don't know SJ's stuff, but as soon as Jordan started the riff it was obvious that it must be one of his standards and damn that boy interprets that well. Amazing, no cheese here. Just great Zeppelin!
Someplace in there, I think between Stairway and V2 is a solid good dance jam, and that's the last point they had me moving with ecstasy, but damn did they have me goin!! Overall very good show with a mix of determined, well executed playing, abandoned jams, and mellow nuggets.

Stanley Jordan tore it up last night in that third set. First two sets were solid/good. Jeff Chimenti played his but off and was the MVP for those sets. Only my opinion here, but I'm not a fan of John K. Bless him. I'm sure he's a good guy. But for the love of GOD...when you put someone (like Stanley Jordan) in the lead guitar slot--who is NOT aping Garcia the whole time--Magic happens. Russo's a monster and he's really settled into this music deeply. Oh and Jackie Green is dynamite on vocals and guitar. Jackie, Phil, Russo, Chimenti and Stanley Jordan would be quite a freaking band!

What else...it was packed in there as it usually is at the Roseland. I saw two fights about to take off. Too many drunk people. Stoned people are much nicer to be around. You know that. :-) Security was very, very chill. By the third set, the place had cleared out a bit and it was markedly more comfortable.

I had low expectations but ended up having a blast. Third set rules and I would love to see Stanley Jordan become a more frequent friend.

I'm with Todd on the Chimenti call, definitely MVP of set I and II, but I differ with the JK thing. John has studied Garcia's style. Aping is a derogatory term the brother does not deserve. JK has given his heart and soul to our community. I watched him as he faithfully delivered show after show, keeping the torch alive as a founding member of DSO. I am thrilled that Bobby and Phil recognized his skill and devotion to Jerry's playing.

>>but I mean this crowd doesn't seem to remember even basic rock 'n' roll etiquette like applauding a hot solo, and that's just bullshit.

While I understand where you're coming from, don't presume to tell me how I should be showing my gratitude at a show. Take your etiquette and shove it. Is that Rock and Roll enough for you?

That being said, were we at the same show last night? Because the audience I was with was pretty lively and going nuts all night long.

Highlight for me was a blistering Franklin's.

Yea...I know lots of people like and respect JK...and I respect that. But when he's singing the Morning Dew and he starts doing all the Jerry vocal mannerisms...it starts to border on parody...like SNL or maybe Beatlemania. You know? It gets a bit creepy and antithetical to the whole concept of 'Furthur'. I started to think...would Jerry be weirded out by this? Again...just my opinion here and I don't mean to disrespect any others sincere feelings. The original incarnations of Phil & Friends proved to me that this music could really be re-invented and made to sound new--while still keeping the fundamental spirit of the music.

Great show, that 3rd set was magic, i admit i wasn't dancing as much. I was pretty transfixed. it's pretty obnoxious when people are hooting and hollering during a Darkstar.;)

Right on Todd. P and F is definitely about incarnations! You do make a good point now that I see it better. JK holds firm while others let it spill out into furthur dimensions? I think that's where you're coming from and is valid.

talking points:
1) Stanley Jordan was impressive.
2) absolutely, without question, NOT interested in these classic rock radio station setlsits.
3) thank goodness we don't have such clapping and hooting etiquette rhetoric, but not because the respect isn't needed. we already have people on their cell phones, people texting, people holding up their cell phones to record, beer runs, taco chip runs, and every other fucking disturbance people cannot seem to leave at the door rather than watching and respecting the band and respecting the people next to them. the last thing I encourage is more noise...especially from people who already have a difficult time understanding common courtesy and basic respect. Sorry, but no thank you. I can barely hear the band play as it is.

Well there is some interesting discussion happening. Stanley Jordan kicks arse-agreed! Crowd not appreciative of solos-didn't see it. I am East Coast through and through and will yell if they diddle too much betwixt songs and even more so when it gets hot(usually lose my voice). I also think there may have been some stunned amazement at what was transpiring. In contrast those moments when you can hear a pin drop cuz the band has the whole crowd in the palm of their hand are peerless. Roseland is a good venue but it would be nice to have the option to find a seat as these 43 yr old legs are tired after only 3 night of this(but I wasn't straying from 20 ft away from Phil last nite!) Hope Tuesday and guest are just as gratifying-Ramble on Roseland!

So Todd do you feel JK is trying to emminate Garcia on stage?

I'll be honest I throughly enjoy his music, he put's every inch of his being out there for everyone to feel and see, something Garcia did as well, and I don't believe that is a schtick, it's John being John. Anyone who loves any music as much as many love the GD and play music themselves will have a hard time not showing their influence, including Garcia who borrowed many a fiddle/banjo riff.

A good topic of conversation though for sure. I can honestly say I'm one of the folks who lobbied hard for JK here a few years back, and caught my fair share of shit for it too. And I'd do it again in a nano sec. Last night he was unLeshed, wide open and thats what I really enjoy about his playing.

Ok, I dig the debate but, the 11.11.12 show was smoking top to bottom. It was one of the best shows I have seen and I have seen many. If you personally could not tune in, I am bummed for you but I was Sittin on Top of the World. Stairway to Heaven was amazing. Stanley Jordan rocked. As to John aka fake Jerry, he rocked as he always does. He is not Jerry but he also is not trying to be him either. He very clearly has his own style and makes an amazing contribution. Folks should open their eyes, their hearts and their minds. You might just find there is more there than you thought.

During the show on Sunday after observing much of the same thing, especially as soon as the music got even a slight bit jammy, I actually coined a phrase for this syndrome:

"Concert ADD"

Something else no one has mentioned but seemed painfully obvious to me: 3rd set just absolutely DRIPPED with Coltrane's A Love Supreme - almost at every turn they were toying with it. Also a Weather Report (the fusion band) piece I can't quite remember the name of in between The Other One verses, which was also almost Dark Star for awhile.

Serious question: didn't Jackie leave the stage for "Franklin's" this night, and it was done by the "core four" of Furthur only?

no, jackie played a mean slide solo on Franklin's and all throughout the night. smokin solo during franklins interplay with john was amazing.
