Sweetness. SO good!!!
Everyone in the band has had a turn to shine and turned it out in spades this whole second set that I was tuned in for. Couldn't pull myself away!!!
Thank you Taper Rob and thanks Phil and Phriends!
Musical Eargasm!
Both times I've seen Stanley Jordan he's done the Eleanor Rigby instrumental - always great.
Folks, they lowered the boom on us last night.....whew.....
My $.02......
1st set SUCKED.....almost left. SJ added nothing to the tunes.....I was wondering what happened to the band I had seen at the Wellmont.
2nd set delivered. Not much more needs to be said.
All in all, I am looking forward to the Capitol shows so the band can refocus and just be itself....I find that guests dilute the power of the band.
help the z man for sat
I wouldn't say the 1st set sucked...maybe compared to GD circa 1972 it wasn't as good, but it surely didn't suck. The song selection was great, but it had a plain feel to it, meaning they really didn't let loose much like they did at the Wellmont shows. I think that's partly attributed to the 3rd guitarist (Stanley Jordan) and the new keyboardist, Adam McDougall. These guys don't play together all that often, outside of Phil, JK, and Russo...so it's tough to expect them to come out and be able to plug away like any other show.
That being said, 2nd set was great. McDougall's funky style fit much better with Shakedown, Speedway Boogie, Viola etc., and they really got into some lengthy jams that let them open up a lot.
One thing I will say is this is the first time I've seen them without Chimenti and man does he make a difference. Nothing against McDougall, but Chimenti blows him clean out of the water.
Oh and I'm glad they went back to the traditional 2 sets. That 3 half-set stuff didn't do it for me Monday night, even with the awesome 3rd set
I thought the first set was the killer and the second set was patchy, with some real highs but also real lows. Jordan had some gear problems at the start of the second set,and I had a lot of trouble hearing him, whereas in the first set he was clear as a bell.
I totally agree about Jeff Chimenti being missed. Last night (esp when JGe was on B3) JK and Jordan didn't step forward enough when they should have on the big jams. JK does this with guests, and when the jams fell short he didn't have JC there to keep thing roaring along like he does in Furthur. Phil got visibly frustrated about this during VLB. At one point the jam was going nowhere and he threw up his hands and seemed to snap at the band.
So far I would say set 3 Sunday and set 1 last night have been the standouts for me. Just my opinion, your mileage may vary. Looking forward to tonight and the tour closer at the Cap.
>>>>Chimenti blows him clean out of the water
I would hope so, he has been playing this music since 1997
Definitely agree with the Into Ashes review - set 3 Sunday and set 1 Monday were my standouts from this run so far. Viola Lee stumbled along, lacking Bobby's sense of its polyrhythmic potential. However lots of highs in the rest, not least the outstanding Franklins (driven like a steam train by Chimenti and Russo) and the fine covers in Sunday Sets 1 & 2.
have to agree on the keys weak sauce indeed.annoying organ big difference.
