after midnight is smokin
"After Midnight" is a rock song written by J. J. Cale, which was later successfully covered by Eric Clapton. The laid back boogie feel of "After Midnight" is a prime example of Cale's signature style. Cale had written the song and released a demo version in 1966

Is this a first?
I always wanted them to do the Shape I'm In especislly with Jeff on keys! Yeah!
Yes. It is a first although they have done Chest Fever with Larry Campbell. 2 Great Band tunes
Long Black Veil!
Some Levon/Band action tonight for Levon's one year anniversary. Jed in set one, Shape I'm In, followed by Long Black Veil (even though Manuel sang Shape and Danko sang Veil). Sweet.
"The Shape I'm In" is a song by The Band, first released on their 1970 album Stage Fright. It was written by Robbie Robertson, who did little to disguise the fact that the song's sense of dread and dissolution was about Richard Manuel, the song's principal singer

“Viola Lee Blues” was written by Noah Lewis and originally released by Gus Cannon (with Lewis on harmonica) way back on September 20, 1928. Little did they know that in less than forty years, their country-blues song would be performed as a powerhouse psychedelic trip into another world.

is angel band first time played?
Hmmm the kids are asleep and I have The Last Waltz on the DVR.
"Angel Band" is an American Gospel music song. The poem, in Common Metre, was originally titled "My Latest Sun Is Sinking Fast," and was written by Jefferson Hascall (sometimes found as Haskell in hymnals). The lyric was first set in J. W. Dadmun's tunebook The Melodeon in 1860, to a tune by Dadmun. The words are in Common Metre and so could be sung to many hymn tunes, but the tune now universally associated with the poem is by William Batchelder Bradbury, and was published in Bradbury's Golden Shower of S.S. Melodies in 1862. Bradbury's song was originally titled "The Land of Beulah." "Angel Band" became widely known in the 19th century, both in folk traditions and in published form. The Dead also covered this tune
? but cool, old standard?

dead - angel band
okay...I was looking at grateful dead...I do like your tidbits of knowledge on the cover tunes
I actually appreciate your tidbits too, Deep. Makes you think about where a song really comes from. Sometimes I have no idea and sometimes I am on top of it. Angel was not one that I knew anything about.
Thanks Ellum of the Deep
Taperrob should never have to pay for a drink or meal again. Thanks so much!
Much love to Furthur for bringing so much love to Levon Helm in the second set — Shape I'm In, Long Black Veil — and doing Angel Band as the encore was awesome!
Phil and Friends also did Angel Band at the first Greek show in 2002,5/31/02 I think.
Furthur fucking rocks!!!! Nice tid bits I love useful information on my favorite BAND!!!!! Thanks!!!
last nite was about as good as furthur can be. Loved the setlist and the levon stuff. Bobby sounded great. I thought jeff had some great moments thruout the show. Nice start to my 3 nite run. Back sun and thurs for more.
Sam L
Totally weak all the way through.
I thought maybe they might get their shit together by #4
Nope
Sad stuff
P&F did Angel Band as recently as 12/18/11, at Warren's Xmas jam.
Wish I'd been there last night to hear The Shape I'm In.
Christmas jam was by far one of the best P&F shows i can remember......twas a jam foshow.....
I don't agree Jagrman. That show was a pretty good way to bring in 4/20 last night. Good song selection, breakouts and good vibes last night. Phil was thumpin' Mee! Many great High points. Love that Capitol Theatre. Thanks for the new speedway Furhur!
Ok well the show was really good. I got my stranger and help slip...I like the Levon tunes but I'm not a big fine and if they were never played again I'd have no problem with that. But to be precise as to there were some noteworthy areas for analysis. When viola was ending Bob started up the standing on the moon chords and theme but was singing viola..."you've got a friend'..you've got a friend some where' .
That weird...and the transition from speedway to franklins lacked grace and was rather crude. Nice Franklins very bassy and bouncy. The second set I was out there and enjoyed it- slipknot was really cool. The first set was excellent/ duprees and stranger were the highlights. The tone and jam on duprees was terrific. Zero security! Puff at will + =
UJB-->Viola was hot.
look for terrapin and darkstar to be unleashed saturday
"Much love to Furthur for bringing so much love to Levon Helm in the second set — Shape I'm In, Long Black Veil "
That's too funny, none of those songs were sung by Levon Helm in The Band. "The Shape I'm" In" was Richard Manuel's tune and "Long Black Veil" was sung by Rick Danko.
Kinda reminds me of the time that I saw Frank Sinatra and he did a tribute "to the great John Lennon" and then sang "Something."
Just when I thought I was tiring of this incarnation I have a night like last night. Epic Dew? Nope. Spacy Eyes? Nope. Actually nothing spectacular or mind blowing....ala (for me) 2nd night (Sunday) at the Mann 2 summers back but rather a really good solid show with lots of sing along songs. Not the annoying kind but rather the connect with the 15 people around you kind. Lots of big grins and GREAT energy. The venue is special, the carpet feels good on my knees and chatter was limited while space was, if not abundant, sufficient. The Duprees was very nice, loved the After Midnight as I did when played last fall here by Phil and friends. Viola always pleases although last nights segways weren't particularly notable. What it was for me was big fun and reminded me why I go through the trouble. YMMV. See you in AC!
Let's get one thing clear: A "first time played" by Furthur, the Dead, Phil, Weir/Ratdog, etc. has nothing to do with the Grateful Dead. That's not against the music or this band or anything else—simply that beyond the (significant) presence of Lesh and Weir, this is not the Grateful Dead. It might play the GD reportoire (and sometimes do it well) and carry on the tradition—and some of you might even be under the impression that Furthur is better than the Grateful Dead—but this is not the Grateful Dead.
Let this band stand on its own, and enjoy the music for what it is. But it's a distinct entity from the Grateful Dead with some legit GD DNA.
When it comes to firsts, please stop connecting it to the Grateful Dead.
^^^ That is the way that I look at FURTHUR setlists>
SUNDAY IS FUNDAY!
Blessings to all brothers ans sisters. The scene is here to stay and it is a MIRACLE to be able to partake of the energy that is and will be concurrent forever with Jerry Garcia. Love the man, live the myth. Pet a cat, call your mom and plant a tree kidz....ITS ON!!!! GDF FOR LIFE YALL!!
I'm with Skeptical and Dom on this one. There's a tradition being carried on and we shouldn't be too harsh in judging it; we should encourage these bold attempts to pass this torch to others in the process of keeping it thriving now in the present, even if P&B are still making a healthy living by doing it (and why the f not?). There is also a lot of that DNA in what we hear and feel, so I enjoy it for what it is; it is still the best time I have being at a live music scene.
Venue is super-sweet. Open floor with a slight slant, carpeted. Beautiful, ornate carvings decorate the walls. Ample bars, no lines. When the show is in full swing, the light show is spectacular. For example, when playing Standing on the Moon, they are able to make the walls and ceiling look like the moon, like you are looking at it up in the sky, complete with craters, amazing. At one point they made the walls seem like they were melting... not kidding here, I did not ingest. Through out the show fun, creative light show from sparkling light to big, Chagall-like colors cascading along. I really liked it. Security nice, friendly, and helpful. Pretty cool scene outside with a mini-shakedown a block away, free parking on the street, and lots and lots of Latino food joints.
The Show: 11 out of 10!!!
Stranger opening was done superbly, tight with long, long jams by John. I was 4 deep on Phil side, sound mix very good, although John's mic wasn't on in the mix (He thought it was, it appeared like his monitor worked). At one point Bobby faked going back to verse, John moved back, Bobby gave menacing, mocking smile at him, backed away...Phil laughed, and John shook his head returning to jam. Clearly, they were having fun from the get go.
After Midnight- More like Clapton style tempo, but Jerry style jam, if that makes any sense. Really good build by John at the end.
Ramble and Tennessee- Fun sing-a-long fest! Man, that theatre was rockin in concert!!! Such a treat to be alive. In the Tennessee first jam Jeff opened up for the evening with a big funky jam.
Big River was straightforward, clean, steady tempo/groove. This is when the dancing started to pick up.
Dupree was a real treat for me, but I noticed it kinda lost some of the people's attention around me. To me, it was excellent. Jeff chimed in again with a big funky lead in the first spot. He really jazzed it up, ten John took it home.
Box of Rain started with a fantastic jam, loose, but close enough melody so that we all knew it was coming, maybe it was the opening notes that tipped us off. You could tell Phill really wanted to sing this, and he did a great job. Two spots in the middle opened up into a Dancin-like jam, These jams were powerful, too. At the end Phil eyed John and Bobby, and I could tell they had discussed the ending notes. They let the last note ring, Phil lifted his bass neck, gave a gentle, slow sweep up, then down, and it ended. He mouthed "Thank you" to Bobby and John after that. It was 9:10 at night.
I stayed put for the entire set break. Met a guy from my home standing next to me and we chatted away the entire break. (Yo Gordon!) I think the break lasted about 40 minutes.
After they took the stage and had all their gear on, I heard distinct Help licks. I turned to a dude next to me, asked if he heard same. He wasn't sure. I still write set lists on paper with pen (yea, I'm old school) so went ahead and wrote "Help" on the paper, told the dude I was willing the song myself, and Bam! We were in second set.
Help>Slip was tight, jammy in spots, never quite fierce, but pushing limits, came down to quiet spots, and back into large crescendos. As we got cooking in the Slip I decided it was time for me to wander to the back and get dancing for real. I was worried about giving up my coveted sweet spot, but said a prayer and hoped for space and good sound in the back. My prayer was answered! As I made my way back they began the riffs to come out of Slip and for some reason I was sure it would not be Franklins, but I had no idea what was to come.
The Shape I'm In- Funfuckintastic! What a great song for this band placed in a perfect spot in the set. The back area of the theater provides for flat, level dancing with great view of the stage and good sound. I was happy and knew I made the right move. I mainly stayed back there for the remainder of the night, twirling, boppin, shakin it, always with a site line and good sound. I went back to my spot several times during the slow spots to see the light show (the ceiling and lights are obscured from the back) and was able to pretty much get back to my spot, give or take a few feet.
Long Black Veil was sweet and spiritual. I was surprised that most people seemed to know the song, and many gave proper reverence.
Uncle Johns- Good, straightforward, clean, good dancing
Viola- V1,V2,V3, straight through, good funk at spots, loose but tight.
Standing on the Moon- Holy shit did this have a great build! Huge bombs at the end, great trade of lyrics, Bobby really really nailed this. Rather Be With You!!! So good. Smiles were everywhere...and some tears. Two interesting notes: 1. Bobby started off with singing "Summer rain, summer rain, summer rain" and I knew we were entering Standing, but I don't recall this ever. 2. Bobby was on slide for much of this song.
New Speedway Big fun, really big sound. At one point there was a definite Smokestack/Spoonful tease.
Franklins- good, but seemed a bit obligatory at this point. And I was exhausted, sweat pouring out everywhere.
Encore: Angelband- I knew what it was, most did not, mellow, nice, but I'll take a more standard encore over it. It seemed out of place for a show of this caliber.
SPECIAL NOTE: Bobby and John have really worked hard to swap lyric lines on many songs and it is working nice. They did this with many songs. I've certainly noticed this before and am certain many who read this are aware of how they do this, but it seems to me like they have worked hard practicing the precision of doing such, and it shows.
Show ended 11:22, it was raining, so I did not hang around afterwards. Drove into West Chester County, found friends home, asleep by 1 am.
Last Note: I didn't realize last night that it was the anniversary of the passing of Levon, thus the Angelband and a few others in honor of the great.
Also the After MIDNIGHT/RAMBLE on Rose pairing in the first set.
When they first started in on Big River at this show, I thought it was going to be a cover of the Allman Bro's "One Way Out".
Also heard the One Way Out sound, forgot about that...good call, Tree!
