this thread seemed to fizzle. what happened?
ok so i was there tonight right on the rail in front of Phils subwoofer. the first set had solid excellent energy and musical interplay all through it. it was like one long group peak. everyone around me was smiling and super stoked and so was the band. John really ripped some very powerful, bright creative and gorgeous guitar leads. it was all very tight and powerful
the second set seemed to lose that energy at points, pick it up again at others, but wasnt very consistent. after never hearing about Luther before this run, dude is very gifted as a musician and seems to radiate authentic good energy. yet, to these ears to keep taking it back to this same cajun flavored, bluesy, funk mono-jam seemed too one dimensional and flat to let his great talent settle into. i dont know, some just really get off on that musical vein. but contrast any one of the tunes Luther took this weekend with anything in the Lesh/Garcia/Hunter catalog and maybe you see what i mean as far as depth.
anyways, the real standouts were almost the whole first set and the comes a time and eyes of the world in the second. the Franklins was jubiliant and felt like the gospel it is. its beautiful how much Phil owns Franklins and Eyes these days.
Im in neither court when it comes to loving or despising JK, but he fucking delivered tonight. he got inside 'Comes A Time" in such a moving way...to me it sounded and felt like one of us, a fellow head, singing his fucking heart and soul out in a spirit of genuine love, respect and tribute to "You Know Who." very tasteful and powerful IMHO. From the rail, several of his solos as they interlaced with Phil completely melted my face in a very old fashioned way. I loved it. and the sound in that room is just brilliant. Im actually pretty intrigued by the potential of just Jeff, Joe, Phil and John. theyre starting to get some really established musical chemistry.
and in closing, i had a wonderful crowd experience tonight to nullify that sitty crowd energy friday. the folks i interacted with were very loving, gratious and considerate of each other and everyone got higher because of it! so heres to you gang!
listened to the first set.....only stand out was Hey Pockey Way.....which was very well played by all, especially by JK, Phil, Jeff and Joe...riffs and vocals were all outstanding....the rest well i'd rather not say......they need to lose Luther as he adds no dynamic to the band as his cajun mojo must have been left in Biloxi
John made his opinion clear. I feel the opposite. Luthur played originally, and well. He played his own style. He's not in a cover band. He kills it. Phil visibly loved it. So did I. To each his own & there's no accounting for taste. I loved this show. Peace

Because the Phans want to know!
After the Luther/Anders 3 shows in April and now this 4 night ramble run, I'm more excited about Phil and Friends than I have been since the Warren/Jimmy days. I thought the Anders show was the best of the last 4 shows with the 2nd and 3rd night of Luther being not far behind. The only show I thought that wasn't exceptionally good was the first Luther show from Thursday and it still had plenty of great moments. I still melt a little thinking about So Many Roads from Thursday and the exceptionally sweet slid work by Luther on that.
My first choice for a current Phil & Friends lineup would be Phil, Joe, Jeff, Anders, and Luther.
My second choice: Phil, Joe, Jeff, John, and Andres.
My third choice: Phil, Joe, Jeff, John, and Luther.
Any of the above would blow my mind if they could get in any significant playing time together.
Luther? That guys voice made me cringe! Id never go to a show or purchase a webcast if hes in the line up ever again!
Luther is one of the best things to happen to Terrapin. I guess Phil likes him, he will be back for the 3rd time in August!
I wasn't at the show....just purchased the webcast.....didn't even listen to the second set as I lost interest. I guess that there is a first for everything. There was no dynamic with Luther......Phil was smiling, perhaps entertained, but that vibe just didn't cut through the music for me. I love Phil and Phriends, especially the different line ups, but seriously, you have to admit, Luther just doesn't have the mojo, or quite frankly, the talent, as the rest of the band.
>>>but seriously, you have to admit, Luther just doesn't have the mojo, or quite frankly, the talent, as the rest of the band<<<
Um, no, I don't have to admit that. Might not always mesh in this context, but is a huge talent.
I do prefer Anders in the mix.
I couldn't agree more with Kuzbo. Luther is a huge talent. I really hope to see a Phil and Friends lineup with Luther and Andres up there together. I really enjoyed all the Phil shows with Luther and Anders. Best stuff in 10 years in my opinion. Luther tore up those Pigpen songs and just bought a really different approach to the music. Different isn't always a good thing, but often it is if there is talent behind it. I think both Anders and Luther are huge talents.
