Smoking first set, really tight. Cumberland was fun and set the pace for the rest of the set. China cat was upbeat and spot on, Phil has a hard on for bird song and as always it was beautifully orchestrated. Watchtower was clean and I know you rider was on fire. Being the tour closer expectations are high and the boys have yet to disappoint.
I've got Furthur on one channel, and String Cheese incident on the other. Decisions, decisions
Who's on sax????!
do you have a cheese link Scott?
Super nice Alligator here wow some sco tones and who is playing sax????? Medeski just freezing it up with those ice keys...wonderful jam!
Sound like Alligator to me, Merri. I was running a golf tournament all day. Now in Long Island after a 3 hour drive. Bethpage in the morning!
...not there but my guess is Bill Evans

im going to be perfectly blunt...looks like most are really digging this pl&f line up...I personally don't like it that much...may be its the jazz infusion I don't know...but not my favorite line up...I much preferred the previous pfil shows at the cap and penns peak ...but still here listening just because I gotta!

thank you rob...seems like that isn't nearly enough
thse guys took it out to the cosmic levels and back...what a Box....love the jammy Boxes with P&F...thanks you TRob. Sax player was phenominal!
They did not do China Cat. They did Rider
Bill Evans on Sax. He played with Kimock and Govt Mule as well yeaterday
I think it would be nice if someone in attendance, or couch tour or both wrote an overall review, even a brief one on the show.
I'll listen to as time allows hopefully continuously after its uploaded. Busy with kids summer colds, and of course I teach them to share!
Appears as they were terrific however all over the map, which seems consistent with festivals
and a lot of aadditional input with the band.
I would have liked to have been there.
Many thanks again to TR and all of the others to bring it, to our living rooms!
thank you Philllllllllllllll!
Short Review: Great show. Other One, Dark Star sandwich was great. The set list should mention the extended jam after Dark Star verse 2.
They did play china cat.
thanks barry, I hope to listen soon. was the 1st night at oxford the BIG hey pocky way and the personal hand glider - motorized, whatever you call them(?) I was there for both. fun shows.
there's a lot of chatter about this rendition of box of rain being very special, different and outstanding with no dialogue on why. can anyone weigh in with why please? thanks again! and yes - thank you PHIL! great job - great tour!
Thanks again TR. You should set up a tax exempt 501(c)and start collecting donations to fund your escapades on tour. You can call "Couch Tour for the benefit of aging hippies"
Be well and Peace.
Great show, but I really don't like the way Phil has been playing The Other One as of late... Just when you think your gonna get a high energy song with The Other One, their now playing it in slow motion. Sorry, just don't like it being played like that.
clutch now that we have a break can i get u at that yahoo address. or do u still come here
I listened to it today thanks again TR...much appreciated...it was so nice to be able to enjoy it from home without all cigarette smoking, beer spillin n swillin loudmouth posers to annoy me...lol !
luvvin my couch shows, and hope all that went had fun, festivals are too much for me ( can't wait for PLF in fall tho ) i luvv the Capitol.
...oooops
This was the best Phil show I have ever seen. It was magic and it was stellar. Absolutely stellar. THANK YOU PL&F FOR A MIGHTY FINE TIME!
Box had a big, long jam before the first verse. Phil hung back and jammed with a massive smile. Then before the last verse, there was another maniacal, long jam. The jam, along with most from the second set with Ellis, was unique and very jazzy (maniacal)! Just a long, very jammy Box.
Phil was clearly digging this show throughout. Listen to how crazy and busy the jamming is during the second verse of Dark Star. Phil and JK's singing was totally unique and they were smiling, may be lauging with each other during the verses. Sung high pitched and with unique phrasing while band was jamming behind them. At one point I saw phil stop playing and cover both ears wtih a big smile. The sax added a ton to show and to the jams. So killer that Ellis played the whole set.
I will say, they came out blazing during the first set which I thought was a monster start to finish. This set was high energy the whole time!
FYI, it was Bill Evans on Sax, not Dave Ellis.
One day, I would love to see either Yo Yo Ma and or Yitzkak Perlam play w/the boys. Wouldn't that be a lot of fun?
Perlman, meant to say.
I am still processing the second set last Saturday. I will say I left the show in a state of complete bliss. The outro jam after the second verse of Dark Star was some of the best improvisational jamming I have ever witnessed. At one point during it the camera was going from one musician to another and all of them had their eyes closed. It was a musical conversation. More later.
Yes Phil's set coupled with Mule's preceding set was one of the best days/nights of music I have ever experienced. Starting with the "Devil Likes It Slow" with Bill Evans (that's a regular occurrence if you've been to the decade plus of Mule Beacon New Year's runs, especially on 12/30. Bill lives in NW CT so he also appears with Mule & ABB often times in CT), I've never seen Warren so animated and laughing as they went off on that jamming.
The Phil sets were just beyond spectacular, being mostly breakouts rather than repeats of the 1st 3 "rehearsals" (altho I like the way they repeated some stuff but did it way DIFFERENTLY - and it seemed they were helping Sco really learn the material, which it always seemed to me he had trouble with the song-ey songs). I always like China Cat split from Rider, and they'd been teasing China Cat so many times in the preceding 4 shows. Having John do the "Jerry thing" really brought a new dimension and interesting counterpoint to all these jazz guys doing their improv thing - a brilliant combo put together by Phil. Birdsong had some amazing jamming which far exceeded typicaly 2nd set jams of Furthur or the Jackie/ Larry era.
When I heard the sax (Bill Evans) warming up for Set 2 I KNEW we were in for it! Opening with Alligator was another brilliant move, giving the jazz guys a classic old school GD song to jam on; As soon as the vocals were over Sco & Evans started dualing with Phil stuck in the middle, I think Phil was actually scared for a minute or 2! The conversations going on were just stupendous, one guy or the other would all of a sudden walk over to one of their compatriots and start some crazy groove then that guy would go to someone else to carry it deeper and this just went on all set, with the songs being brief islands of sanity. I was truly lost during the whole Dark Star - Other One segment, not remembering what verse of what song they had/hadn't done. And yes the jam into Stella was amazing, I was actually GLAD to see Stella over anything else (the only downside was the band or DJ on the other stage was soundchecking or something and it was pretty distracting during the quiet parts). I think they purposely jammed the Box out just to fill up the time until 1 am (ended at 1:01 actually), I certainly have no problem with that
All in all, the best Phil lineup I've witnessed live since 07 Mtn Jam/ 05-06 Barry/Larry/ the Q. The only recent lineup that comes close are those TXR shows w/Stanley Jordan from last July (man I'd like to see him with some of these guys - he actually fits into the music better than Sco but Sco brings WEIRDNESS).
I'm curious re Scofield. To me, he is not playing or jamming correctly. Plays outside of the music, not within it. Can't explain, yet his playing seems to me to be awkward, angular and not really part of the sauce. I realize he comes from a very different genre and perhaps that's good but I find his jams to be a dash repetitive, lacks some emotion and plan doesn't fit the feel. When you listen to Jerry, John, Warren Jackie etc, they seem to play w/the song, roll it around, Scofield is by the book adding these interesting bits of jazz flares yet not adding anything to the content or what the song is trying to say. What say yous?
^^^^I think you're dead wrong.
It is not a right or wrong thing, we are talking about art here. Raymond feels a certain way, as does Keith. Neither is right or wrong.
Sco's as psychedelic as Phil. Love their minds working together.
Correct! Its not a right or wrong, its all subjective. Personally I love Sco, but Im sure there are some more that don't.... A friend of mine liked the way they did The Other One, me on the other hand don't like it at all.
Beautiful night, best vibes weather yet, not a drop on me. Music, especially these sets have changed my life. long live Phil and thank you. this world wouldn't be the same without ALL of you. thank you to the girl who taught me how to hoola hoop. lol. freakin aawesome. best eva. love
Oh yea forgot to mention that Bill Evans addition was the balls.
>>Plays outside of the music, not within it...his playing seems to me to be awkward, angular and not really part of the sauce...
Sounds like a description of Bob W's classic (and indispensable) playing style here! Incidentally, these are all things I happen to love about Bobby's (and Sco's) playing.
To each his own, I guess.
Bob plays off the lead and pushed the lead hard or soft aor whatever is needed. I'm sure Scofield is a fine jazz player but he does not play within. It's separate or distinct from the group direction, the unit, the cohesion. I hear the notes and think - pretty good, not bad. Maybe I don't dig the jazz approach as there's something a tad predictable.
"Maybe I don't dig the jazz approach as there's something a tad predictable."
That's okay. I find the sax in rock music, and especially in GD music, to be absolutely atrocious. It ruins everything for me. And it is a novelty that I find disgusting and entirely unwanted and unnecessary. That's just me, though. I don't care who is on the instrument. I don't like the way it sounds. It's tonality is the worst of all instruments I've ever heard.
I once heard Greg Osby play w/the Dead a few years back at NYE show. Stunning and spot on. I haven't seen Scofield live and really not trying to be so critical - just wondering if there isn't something lacking in the approach of a jazz musician? I can't put my finger on it but I would say he doesn't get it. But it's just my two cents I suppose.
