There is no way any of the other configurations, which folks get themselves in hand and start yanking it over, can do that second set. I am not saying that all the other manifestatios Bob Phil Mickey Bill SCI etc etc etc are not very very worthwhile.......they just don't bring the heady heartfelt mojo of GOGD which we got last nite.PERIOD
I hoped on in the summer of 91', and if I hadn't hit the bootlegs as hard as I have since then, I don't know if I would have gotten 'it' the way I feel I fortunate enough to say I have. Although I saw around 50 shows until the end, I was never able to see enough shows to feel like I had done justice to the flame of inspiration the boys ignited in me the day I went out to buy (egad!) Skeletons from the closet at the age of 16.
Tour from 91-95 at times seemed like a collective 'group-therapy' for those who were fortunate on unfortunate enough to see what was happening with the deterioration of the x-factor that was so prevalent on boot-legs from 70,73,77,85,90 etc..
While all of this is subjective, what I believe now more than ever was what I was really dying to get a piece of, was the sense of history that the boys had so impeccably managed to sustain a piece of.
while the Stones etc all came from the same era, here is and was something fundamentally different that emanated in sound and spirit to the S.F. Haight-Ashbury aesthetic than anything else that came out of that era.
While numerous tones of meticulously conducted research exist on the after mentioned subjects,
it is safe to say that last nights performance truly breached the group consciousness into that other realm of eternal being; unknowing formlessness, the eye of creation birthing the ingredients of reality in a formless cacophony of the sacred and the profane, the eternal forms of Apollo and Dionysus perpetually intertwined in a dance of life and death, The X-Factor incarnate, with (as was stated in the Furthur Forums) w/ Coltrane himself nodding in approval.
I do not know what will hold forth for the legacy of the psychedlic rock movement which has it home in the San Fransisco of the 1060's, all I know is that the legacy of community and improvisation are alive and well in the current and the forthcoming ranks of the Grateful Dead family.
Branford playing on stage reminded of me of a calling I was blessed enough to realize and accept at the blissful age of 16. Jazz to me is the savior of the nations soul, as its conception in Congo Square in New Orleans can have no more an integral aspect of the nations soul than any other. It is our contribution to the canon of Western Civilization, and a mighty blow indeed to the incarnations of malaise and frivality that seep into the marrow of a country's soul every now and then between epochs of history and time; as Joseph Campbell said, the Grateful Dead are the antidote to the atomic bomb.
Kesey, Kerouac, Ginsberg, Coltrane, Hunter Thomposon, Garcia, these are my heroes, my sacred totems of perpetual inspiration and fire and I am fortunate to be a part of this community that has saved my soul more times than I care to remember.
What an epic night of music, family and all that is right with living one's life in the eye of the storm of history and time eternal...Blessings family, and thank you Phil, Bobby and co. for facilitating the love of life my parents instilled in me as a child, and now as a man, if I never get the chance to see Furthur live again, I will always have become a better person, with a calling and someone to love...all of you.
Blessings...

Scurv, you got it right man, furthur sure is a special gift. I go to shows with a crew of deadicated but youthful heads- never saw jerry but are as much deadheads as my other buddy who has been going since 1972. I was saying to them this weekend that after jerry died you thought it was all over, but bobby kept touring, furthurfest came around, then phil, after a few combos of friends brought the Q. Something that surely exceeded my post jerry dreams, and gives me hope for our future as show going heads. I look forward to many great solo projects but I'll keep hoping for another furthur show. Sunday at red rocks with Branford blew my mind.
I'm with Ckwagon! well expressed! I only got to catch the Sunday show this year, but Branford guesting made my trip worthwhile. It was completely off my radar that he was in the Denver area,
Without giving all the superfluous details of who played what, I can sum it up with this. At some point in the second set, I was transported to that mental state where nothing exists but the music. THAT, my friends, has not happened for me in many years. It's a pretty big magic trick to make Red Rocks "disappear". Outstanding.
Trackin' with you Sunday, String.
One word: "Slipknot".
Imagine beautiful Redrocks on a late summer day with the first set starting at 5Pm in the daylight with a nice breeze and a little light rain and wind for the second half of the set. Can you count how many time you hear the lyric wind during this show ? The audience is smiling and bopping as one organism connected to the surroundings, unifying old deadheads with young hippies and hipsters as one family in the presence of Jerry, regardless of how many times each actuality saw him perform if any. The first set is so well done and the band enters the majic zone with NEW SPEEDWAY BOOGI !!! washing over Redrocks.
Night falls on the second set and and Branford Marsalis appears during the beginning of the Weather Report Suite opener and stays though the entire set except a break for the Other One. The whole band is in top from for the second set with John K., Jeff Chimenty and Branford taking charge of the melody and soloing, jamming both with and off each other. John takes many opportunities to take charge and shine and one can't helo notice how Jeff Chiminty continues to develop as a creative force and become more the bands sound. Phil is a rock all weekend as is drummer Joe Russo but Russo gives something extra in recognition of a chance to jam with Branford. I only which the bass could transfer to recordings the way it sounds at the shows with Phil crunching out what this listener would say is part of the leads while simultaneously forming the foundation for the shape of each song.
The WRS is nearly flawless and winds down gently with the last note handing off to Eyes of the World. Eyes takes us on a ride then pulls us in preparing us to become one with Darkstar and The Other One. Morning Dew stands alone in its Beauty and power. Then we are back on the ride with rousing Help on the Way > Slipnot > into a joyous Franklin's Tower to bring home the four day run. The Broke-down Palace encore sends us home, souls soothed as we we shuffle out of Redrocks and bid the summer farewell.
