saturday...
tonight's the night...
Weather Report and Terrapin!!!
That's my geuss
Just waking up from last night. Rain the whole show. Band nailed it. Pure bliss. You have no idea.
>>Band nailed it. Pure bliss. You have no idea.
Moral: never judge a show by the setlist!!
I think I'll be stopping by the store on the way up to get some extra warm clothes. Last night was cold and wet - hoping to spend more time tonight paying attention to the music, not avoiding the wind and rain.
And to think, when I left home yesterday in New Mexico, it was sunny and in the mid 80s.
Will Bobby remember the lyrics tonight? Hope he did his homework. I laughed my ass during TS. Didn't he say "Oh shit" as he struggled to remember the words.
The music was great at least.
Blackbird/Friend of Devil was the highlight for me.
Warren plays some tasty slide.
I thought last night was unreal. The boyz make it look so easy, seeing Billy and Mickey just smokin' in the rain. Billy in shorts and slippers the whole show. Sendind a little Aloha Spirit our way
anybody got any extras for tonight?
Hit Craig's List for extra's. Got a $30 tix last night
What's the policy on bringing a camera into the venue? Does it depend on venue policy or the bands? Could I get a camera in and/or how would I do it?
Red Rocks said as long as the lens is not removable you can bring it in

Help me if you please
Give me the right area code
And the number that I need
My rider left upon the midnight flyer
Singin' like a summer breeze
I think she's somewhere down South
Down about Baton Rouge
But I just-a can't remember no number
A number I can use
Direct'ry don't have it, central done forgot it
Got to find a number to use
Try'n to check out her number
Try'n to run down her line
Operator said that's priv'ledged information
And it ain't no business of mine
It's floodin' down in Texas, poles are out in Utah
Got to find a private line
She could be hangin' 'round a steel mill
Workin' in a house of blue lights
Ridin' a getaway bus out of Portland
Talkin' to the night
I don't know where she's goin', I don't care where she's been
Long as she's been doin' it right
Long as she's been doin' it right
Who sang Operator? From the picture it sure looks like Warren. I really thought Phil would have sung that one.

Operator
Hell In A Bucket
Broken Arrow> Jam>

Hey Pockey Way
Anybody know? Anybody...Anybody....Beuler?
51 shows and i have never seen a Bucket!!! Can you believe that is my elusive song!
denver 94 i bought a fake ticket and it was played. so was bird song and so was brokedown, and i never saw them, either...it was the one where jerry laughed in the mic and they started the brokedown over. i've see BS and brokedown with this arrangement, tho...but still no BUCKET!!!
Ben, that is funny that Hell in A Bucket is your elusive song! Wow, you really never saw Jerry play Bird Song? Thats pretty wild, after 51 shows!
Very cool pictures, TR! It brings me right back-excitement and all! Have you seen HempHoney?
hey ben,
if it's any matter, i went to 60 grateful dead shows before i ever got a shakedown. it hurt....and so i feel ya bro......(then i heard 4 shakedowns in one year)...it'll all come around
Rob Que that's really strange because just about the same thing happened to me. I had seen the Grateful Dead probably around 50 or so times and never saw a Shakedown until RFK `95. It was always either the show I skipped or the ones I couldn't get tix to. All my friends had seen it at least 7 or 8 times. On the other hand, almost every time my friend and I were at the same show the boys would play Box of Rain without fail. From the first show to the last one we'd seen together.
That is an AMAZING! First Set, My God AMAZING!
I'm not sure if I can wait till St. Louis
I'm sure Warren sang Operator since he sang it in rehearsals
Queen Jane
Phil calling the change into All That We Are
thanks shane. I couldn't listen to the rehersals b/c I am still on dial-up...yes that's right I'm basiclly in the dark
once again, wonderful work taperrob
thanks so much bro! My how you have grown

Excellent call on the Terrapin and Weather Report Suite
Thanks Taperrob. You Rule!!!
Another one for the anals!!! Love the Post Space selections.
No Sat Nite???
oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
the show is now playing on the Zone Radio
www.live365.com/stations/2012_live
Sound seems better than the last couple of shows.
Warren singing Operator. I think I prefer Phil but this sounds great. Show seems much tighter and more coherent.
The Operator is so much slower than I expected it to be, but who am I to have expectations about the Dead?
Least i'm enjoyin' the ride
Who else is gonna bring you a Broken Arrow?
For me, the first set was "great" & the second set was just "good". The "band unit" energy was definitely there in set 1, but seemed a little "off" in set two. Great "Drums", "Comes A TIme" & "Unbroken Chain", but "Let It Grow" seemed to stall. Might just be me. Can't really complain too much since I got a "Terrapin".
This realy is some sick shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone know how the Reuben and Cherise was?
PS. This Cassidy sounds great and the Baba Jingo was killer
Hey Pockey Way was Outstanding!!!
Fucking Fabulous
The boys are starting to hit their stride as evidenced by this show.
The post drums stuff is sublime. Much better than last year IMO. I don't think "THE Show" has happened yet, but they're getting close to it.
"The Show" will be in Atlanta.
damn it had best be in Atlanta!
Looks like a nice show.
Does that mean we get Dark Star>Caution>Help>Slip!>FT tonight??
I think sooooo!!!
What song is All That We Are?
(BTW Happy Dads Day everyone! )
>>>>Does that mean we get Dark Star>Caution>Help>Slip!>FT tonight??
I think sooooo!!!
No.
Are you forgetting THE OTHER ONE?
Pink Floyd, Dark Side?
Reviews?
Setlist looks like it must been a pretty fun-type rocking show
got Hunter streaming right now, great pics also Thanks TR!
better than friday.
black throated was fun and so was hey hey pockey way. the rest of the first was solid, but it still looks like this band is still trying to find its own identity. some of the others songs in the first set were good, but the jams just dont seem to really go any where.
2nd set seemed like a struggle, solid, but like the lakers, this lineup still needs time to gel. let it grow and unbroken chain left something to be desired, still solid, immho.
then we got some pretty sick shit at the end. terrapin till the end was very interesting for me. this is when the 3 guitar thing worked and worked well. bob was really into it and you could really hear his guitar. there was some very interesting interplay up through touch.
i think these guys just need to play together a little longer and they will be fine. hopefully the lineup will stay the same and this band can start spreading the magic on a more consistent basis.
think we see some floyd as well, tonite.
the weather is finally kick ass. guess its about time to head to the lot.
:-)
Oops..wrong thread..Happy Dad's Day to all..
wow, when was the last post drums terrapin? I remember the Nassau encore in 91, but outside of that does anyone know>? They really seem to be mixing the song placements up nicely.
no one more sat nite last evening. when was the last time that didnt go down?
comes a time was awesome...
thanks taper rob!
I really dig All that We Are.
It was great on 12/5 and it sounds sweet right now
Thanks Again TR!
The Dead 6/19/04
(just my opinion, take it for what it is. I'm sure other people have
different opinions, as always)
last night was fucking unbelievable, imo. Ken, you'll want to get this
show. Your dragon with matches has finally broken it's chains! We're
dealing with a whole new monster here...there were definitely some screw
ups, but they seemed more incidental to me since the music was so huge.
Everyone went off, FINALLY... actually, i can't believe that after 4 shows,
the band has gelled so quickly...
1: Alabama getaway... phil, warren, bobby sang. Very well done and rockin.
Bobby missed a line, but o well. it definitely wasn't lacking energy
Black throated wind... this was one of my favorite bobby songs when i first
got into the dead, but i really didn't like the later GD versions, as they
seemed to have too much pop and lacked that "highway" feeling that the song
represents... last night, that 1972 feeling was back in effect, and it was
so nice to hear again
Operator...this was AWESOME!!! very slowed down, neworleans/ blues
style..warren on vocals... it had that early 70's mojo... that total "good
ol' grateful dead sound"... a definite highlight for me.. a must listen
Hell in a bucket... seemed kind of superfluous, but rockin and really well
done...
broken arrow... just when i thought the show was going to be more rockin'
than usual, they brought it down and played a really nice version of this
song... i didn't even mind phil that much, as the music was just beautiful
and colorful... this went into a very nice jam that started to show hints of
samson and delilah, but instead>
baba jingo... if mickey's going to sing, i don't mind this song. It's much
better hearing this than hearing him butcher some jerry tune. warren added
a lot to this, and the high energy of the song definitely shows that these
guys have a fresh sound, imo
Hey pockey way... another highlight.. warren did so good on this song... i
believe there was a mini-drumz during this song, but i could be mistaken.
Anyway, it was huge. Pretty much, by this point, i become sold on warren...
he adds so much to this band, and they really threw the ball to him this
show.
Cassidy... WOW... a crystal clear version of this song... they went through
all the changes during the jam, and jimmy did a wonderful job. once again,
very spacey stuff... woohoo!
2 queen jane.. a solid version.. my first time, so i liked hearing it...
the "when your children start to resent you" line stuck out for me...i'm
glad i'm stickin' this journey out
??? don't know what 2nd song was, but i didn't really like it... don't know
if it was a new song or not... maybe it'll grow on me. There was an awesome
jam after this, though
Unbroken chain... nice version, although the band did a pretty bad job with
all the changes. You could tell they were struggling at points, but they
also really rebounded well... just took a few seconds before they were
rollin' again...
WRS>let it grow... what can i say? it was SMOKIN'!
drums... another awesome drums. No beam..they spent a long time just on
their drum kits for a very high energy solo..then to the beast...these guys
are 60??? jesus...
space... another incredible space! these guys really are artists, and i
felt like they were painting a picture on stage...super spacey, once again
with direction, cohesion, beautiful effects...
the next 3 songs were a warren medley, SO beautiful...
comes a time>
terrapin>
reuben and cerise>
sugar mag
comes a time was beautiful... i liked joan's singing on it better, but no
need to compare really..warren has SOUL, emotion, and did a wonderful job on
this song..they way it needed to be done. A GREAT jam out of this into one
of the first (if not the first) flawless, or close to flawless, BEAUTIFUL
transitions into Terrapin... i think that all of the spacey jams of the
evening led up to this, and they came through big time.... sooo...
TERRAPIN has now returned, imo. I thought phil singing it last year was a
travesty...yes, he has emotion, but after hearing warren sing it last
night... i felt like this is the way it should be... nuff said..
Reuben and cerise... such a perfect song to follow terrapin,
Sugar mag...such a perfect song to follow reuben and cerise...
E: touch of grey
yes, they DID NOT play saturday night. i couldn't believe it.. Touch of grey
was nice... it was pretty hilarious seeing bobby botch one of the lines..he
stepped up to the microphone, tilting his head, trying to sing, but nothing
came out for a few seconds...anyway, a nice version
ALSO, i have to give major props to CANDACE... she was as much a part of the
moment as anyone else.. the stage set up was SO much better than on
wednesday... it had 4 dimensions to it.. VERY reminiscent of late GD stage
setups...
I'm finally sold on the warren/jimmy/bobby combo. They are really finding
their niche... jimmy is a crazy player, while warren, like jerry, can place
the right notes at the right time, very poetic, especially when coupled with
bobby..together they create something very familiar...
Overall, i'd give this show a 9 out of 10... I would give it an 11 out of
10, but there were some botched lyrics, confused moments, etc. but i think
a lot of the mess ups had more to do with the band being so pumped up and in
the moment that they sometimes temporarily forgot where they were...
Also, since the night before was in the 40's with rain, the beauiful, warm
night and redrocks breeze brought the energy level WAY UP, contributing to
one hell of a show. The music was transcendent
ryan
The pic of Opertaor.. Is that Warren standing out there singing without a guitar!?!?
Hopefully these guys will be really jellin' by the end of the West Coast swing. Should be SMOKIN' by Portland>Gorge!! These shows are basically live rehersals.. 5 days in one spot. Sweet updates taperbob!!!!
I'm guessing a Dark Stary kinda night tonight!!
See ya'll in Boise!!!! HAve a great Southern West Coast run!!!!!!
he has guitar
hes just not on it its straped on but just straight at ya, "foreshortened"
he is using a new gibson les paul that i haven't seen him play before. it is a natural finsh 2 pickup version. his amps were the diaz through a marshall 4x12, a fender super reverb,(couldn't tell black or silver) and a smaller 3rd amp that i think was a fender head on a 2x12 cabinet, but i couldn't tell.
>>>>ALSO, i have to give major props to CANDACE... she was as much a part of the
moment as anyone else.. the stage set up was SO much better than on
wednesday... it had 4 dimensions to it.. VERY reminiscent of late GD stage
setups...
So Candace is back! Sweet!
didn't see candace, but judging from the lighting and set up, i figured it was her... she was at nye, so i'm pretty sure she's still around..
Warren stood up and sang several times last night - comes a time - with his guitar sitting by his side. It was a very interesting dimension that truly added to the music. Hey it's Red Rocks - always a good time. Ryan you definitely brought me back. The pics are kind too! Every member of the band stepped up and gave it a shot. They definitely have not lost that old magic.
Ignore
Some rather blurry (sorry we were having too much fun) PICTURES from last night's (6.19.04) show.
looks to me like this was the best show from the rocks...
Candace was sure there. She is experimenting with a different, more geometric style and with vivid colors. They were subtle and very good. They had a couple of huge, scalloped silk screens (except Friday night, for obvious reasons)that blended in very nicely with the lights.
My wife pointed Candace out with shorter hair and glasses.
Of the four I saw, Saturday was my fave. Smokin' Alabama to open which let us know the band was bringing game.
Operator was on the mark with Warren nailing the vocals. Good Cassidy and a ripping Pocky Way to close the set.
Second set highlights included the WRS, Terrapin and Reuben.
Warren is lending stunning chops played through a Leslie, some real emotive vocals plus a great choice of songs. Extra bonus: he doesn't forget the words.
Oh yeah, the guys who don't think Weir can play, need to catch a show. He's turned up loud in this mix and he's dueling with Warren throughout.
Chimenti is a blistering keyboradist and he can wail on the B3.
Phil brought the thunder and the percussion was outstanding.
All the naysayers are better off staying at home because this is the real deal. Their seat will be taken by some grateful ears.
Unbroken Chain blew everyone away. I don't think anyone has ever played it better, with more intensity, and longer. Electric!!!
The Unbroken was sublime and, at least, 20 mins long.
phil and friends '02 at the rocks UBC was better...
phil and friends '02 at the rocks UBC was better...
Yer dreamin'.
i guess i was dreaming the PLQ didn't fuck up the changes unlike another band i saw play it this weekend...
Just because one was better doesn't mean the other had to suck. I was at the 8/29/02 show, and I must agree that it was the best UBC I've ever seen performed (and I've seen it plenty of times, with Jerry, with P&F, with PLQ, the Other Ones and The Dead). Anyone who questions Warren's guitar chops should have a listen to the outro jam from that one. Those PLQ shows in '02 are among the very best live music I have ever witnessed. But having seen 4 of the 5 in this run, I'm here to tell you that this is BY FAR the best core-four project to hit the road. Saturday night was stellar - everyone I saw was smiling, dancing and loving life. The UBC was wonderful. The WRS beautiful. And how about Terrapin -> Reuben and Cherise -> Sugar Magnolia to close?
Look, it CAN'T be the same without Jerry. And I'm a HUGE fan of the Q. But if you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with.
Hey, Dead - thank you for a real good time.
TOM
Candice did an awesome job with the lights this evening, saw her at the hotel after the show talking with GT asking peoples opinions of the show. I let her know it was freaking excellent, music and lights. This is the show to get.
Warren did a grate job with Broken Arrow, Comes A Time and Rubin & Cherise.
Alabama Getaway, Hell In A Bucket, Queen Jane, Unbroken Chain, Terrapin Station, Sugar Magnolia, Sunshine Daydream ~ Pretty much says it all, add Black Throated Wind and Cassidy into the mix and you've got that good ol' GD feeling running up and down your spine.
Saturday was much smoother than Friday, only noticed Bobby cutting in on Warren's song one time in the first set, I think it was at the end of Broken Arrow where the last note was still resonating, then wham-o my turn again. That was the last time I heard that happen.
Pictures from this night will show the whole stage, hopefully the lights will come out real nice. Had a few problems getting the camera inside, was turned away once in the line that comes through the rocks, then walked up to the top where a different, much less anal guard had no problem, "Enjoy your Show " It all depends who the person is that checks your bag, crew-cut, ex-marine, cop wannabe type is no good. Go with the young guy who doesn't want to invade your personal privay, just concerned with bottles, knives and guns.
Saw a bad car wreck on the way back to the hotel, my mind was still tingling from the show and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw two tail lights slam right into a very bright yellow light that turned out to be a cop car making sure everyone could see the road. Be careful out there folks, you never know who's on the road.
didn't say this one sucked, just said '02 PLQ was better because someone else said this UBC was the best...
I was at both the '02 PLQ shows and sat DEAD show, and the UBC are plyed a little different.I think PlQ peaked in 01'.The shows in July that year blew away the 02' shows.Just my 2 cents. But these shows are on another level.I like DEAD best. With these you get best of both worlds:Bobby songs,Drums/space,Warren,Jimmy.By the end of this leg they will be REALLLLY GOOOD.
once again just my 2 cents
yeah, but the frost show in '02 is still the pinacle of PLQ for me. a good time groovin in the sun on the grass with mountain girl 15 feet away.
i think i saw hemphoney at red rocks and she scared me...
what the hell is that supposed to mean Soulshiner?
How could I be scary?
All smiles & grooving at the Rocks?
oh well
your loss...............
met up with many groovy zoners, Lawrence folks, & heads from everywhere
~the hemptress
I saw Hemp Honey at Red Rocks & she didn't seem scary at all! It was a pleasure meeting you Amy, um...in line !
Also, nice to see you Graffix! I was a bit too spun to make my way down to the taper section at set break, I blame Mickey...
Right back at ya Lude714~ hope you dug the show, we had a beautiful night
Anyone know of any posting of this show to download/torrent? these sets look uh-mazing. thanks
We had a real nice time relaxing with Amy, Bruce and their friend at the bar, enjoying some lunch, drinks and some quiet time together. Thanks for stopping by Amy
LudeMan ~ That caught me by supprise when you and your friend drove up while I was taking some pictures of the rocks and wild flowers. You from Pittsburg, while in Colorado notices someone familiar from Philly. Sometimes it can be a small world, good to see you bro.
"phil and friends '02 at the rocks UBC was better... Yer dreamin'."
The UBC from 9/25/03 was definitely hotter. Not saying that this night was bad, but that UBC in the outro jam is second to none.
Candace was there. She took down the tent over the lighting board. That meant that all of us in the taper section could see clearly.
And, she does not have short hair and glasses. Must have been someone else. She is the best in the business.
>>>And, she does not have short hair and glasses. Must have been someone else. She is the best in the business<<<
She (Candace)sure did on this evening. We've talked to her on several occasions. My wife is a huge fan and we've sought her out over the years, even been given some setlists.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I never thought I'd say/write this, but the Dead should dismiss Warren and Jimmy and bring back Mark Karan. Warren singing is good on some songs, but a downright drag on songs like Reuben & Cerise, Sugaree and Comes a Time. He does not sound soulful, but instead completely dreary and depressing. He sounds like he's about to fall asleep. Bring Joan back!
On guitar, Warren barely had any leads, he played rhythm behind Bobby. No room for 3 guitars. Either Jimmy or Warren has to go or better yet, bring back Mark Karan. Warren's best work is with the blues jams of ABB and Mule. Grateful Dead music's looseness does not suit him well. Same with Jimmy. I really don't care for the speed metal repetitive licks he throws into songs and his jamming is not impressive. His licks all sound the same and are not very inventive.
Best songs from 6/19/04:
Weather Report Suite, Terrapin Station, Sugar Magnolia and Touch of Grey.
"She (Candace)sure did on this evening. We've talked to her on several occasions. My wife is a huge fan and we've sought her out over the years, even been given some setlists."
Maybe it was the same person. The person I'm referring to was sitting in the chair working the light board during the Dead set. So, if it wasn't her, there was some other woman doing the lights.
Only saw her without glasses. Maybe she put them on when the show started as I was looking at her back from that point on. Her hair was shoulder length (?). Maybe you consider that short for her. My wife's hair is shorter so I consider that long.
Mark Karan??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
um...let's just say I disagree
Did anyone else think the setting looked like moose horns? We had a running joke all night that the band was actually Bullwinkle's brain.
