I beleive he's trying to account for every song played this tour so far, making it easier to deduce if a song might be due for a rotation...

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By chuck sakoda (Digdogdig) on Thursday, June 24, 2004 - 11:26 pm: Edit Post

rob: I wrote a program to try and predict what songs they'll be playing. By removing all the songs theyve played in the last 5 shows, and the songs they played the last time they were at the venue, you get that list.

Just thought some of you might be interested in that.

... apprx. 11:36pm PST thursday night...the band is jamming away @ Irvine Meadows 2nd set right now....1st set looks pretty predictable and maybe somehow crafted just so for...so many great shows at this venue, starting in March 83 and continuing through Spring 89. the GD played there every year for 7 years, the last 3 or 4 being 3 show runs. completely sold out too. packed lots... the infamous gate-crashing incident in 87, the heavy police/riot deal in 88....ah those were crazy years to be a young surf-stoked dead kid living at the beach in southern cal. met my wife there in 81 waiting in line @ Sears to get tickets for the Aug 81 Long Beach shows...oh yeah let's not forget all the crazy nights in there. and Pauley Pavilion, my 3rd show being 12/30/78. Ventura County Fairgrounds..."Dead on the Beach" and amazing shows incl the return of Crazy Fingers in 82. US Fest 8/82, check that 9am show out sometime...all the crazy JGB shows too.archival research reveals MANY great SoCal Dead shows over the years, and great crowds of freaks too. it was a unique time and place to be a DeadHead, and I will always cherish those times. here's a nod to my friends that are there tonight, and those that were then.

2nd set ?????

wow wow wow wow wow wow wow

will review when I arise on Friday... it's been a very long, euphoric 3 days/nights. I feel blessed that I have something in my life that gives me so much pleasure, happiness, and FUN!

The (Grateful) Dead train is firing on all cylinders. As I said in my review of Wednesday's Red Rocks show - SEE THIS BAND! And when you get done, remember that Phil is 64 l;years old. Mick Jagger doesn't have shit on Phil!

(and register to vote with Headcount - I've been volunteering at all of the shows so far and we're approaching the 1000 milestone!!!)

PS Yes, Bob sang So Many Roads. A few lyrical trainwrecks, but overall he sang it beautifully and with passion and soul.

glory road was written by Ray Sisk
warren has been playing it solo for a while
real curious to hear what it sounds like w/ full band

tonight i'm gonna sleep in a good hotel
nice warm bath if all goes well
been out in the badlands for 21 days
tracking my bounty down
he was only a kid maybe 17
but he traded love away for a streak of mean
now he's tied to my saddle with his head hung low
out on the glory road

**all you downtown ladies won't you dress in style
got some gold in my saddlebags i'd trade it
for a smile
let's have dinner on the devil tonight
tomorrow there'll be hell to pay
won't you come along
i'll be riding out on the glory road someday

two men painted a midnight sky one slung low other riding high
wonder if anybody knows just why i had to shoot him down
now i lay me down to rest god bless the boy with my bullet in his chest
but you can't bless me cause i lost my soul out on the glory road

**

the entrance gate was a serious shakedown-- separate lines for guys and gals to get a fairly serious search. turn around, take everything out of your pockets, time for the search. hey aren't those rubber gloves on the ground?--wtf?

at least shoreline'll be more friendly.

that other one--made it all worth it. dig on how they've been jamming out the next to the last song in the first sets--yo!

What a great show last night! The best post jerry dead/too show I've ever seen. They were all *on* last night for the most part. I thought San diego sucked. Irvine was completely different. Hopefully it wasn't just a fluke that they played so good last night. My wife loved it, which made it so much better. I get so much more out of the whole show experience when I can look over and see her enjoying music that much.

Set 1: Jam>
Feel Like A Stranger
No More Do I>
West LA Fadeaway
Bertha
Patchwork Quilt
Only The Strange Remain
Cryptical Envelopment>
The Other One>
Around & Around

The first set was great. It seemed like it just kept getting better. Stranger was great. They built up a lot of momentum with NMDI and it kept going through west LA. they kicked it up a notch with bertha and the momentum stayed through until PQ which was a nice breather. OTSR sucked, but I didn't care. at least it wasn't fire. I think OTSR is a stupid song. It's not just mickeys singing, it's just a bad song. Sorry, but that melody is just lame. Anyway, It didn't bother me or anything, I got some laughs out of it. We had a freind that's not a deadhead go with us and he leans over to me and says "I think that guy should just stick to the drums". So that made up for it. hearing the opening notes of cryptical made me forget all about it. I like a first set Cryptical>Other One. Around and around was a nice rockin closer. No real mind blowing jams or solos, but just an overall HIGH energy set where everyone clicked.

Set 2: Low Spark Of
High-Heeled Boys>
Mississippi Half-Step
*Glory Road>
Uncle John's Band>
Jam >
The Wheel>
Reuben & Cerise>
Drumz/Space>
So Many Roads>
Tons Of Steel>
Music Never Stopped
Donor Rap/Headcount Rap
E: Casey Jones

Second set kind of speaks for itself. plus I'm getting bored writing this, so I'll just give some thoughts.

I love low spark.
I like it better when phil sings half step, but it was still fun to hear.
Glory Road- I didn't know what this song was. It seemed to me to be a typical slow countryish warren song. I didn't care for it.
UJB was good. If I remember correctly, there were a few times when it fell off track... No biggie
I don't like the wheel. I never have, but one of my friends was hoping to hear it, so I was happy for him.
Reuben & Cerise- fuck yeah!
I payed attention during drums and liked it. Normally I don't give a shit. I mean, drumz are usually pretty good, but for me it's like so what?
Space got me back in my seat for a nice little break.
I thought bobby did a good job on So many roads.
I never liked Tons of steel til now. WOW!
Music never stopped was cool too. It really seemed like the music wasn't going to stop.
Casey jones- listen for 1 verse, and then get a head start out. It's a LONG wait if you don't, and I'm not a big casey jones fan anyway.

I'm a rob fan, but I find myself really rooting for jeff. I think he's doing a great job. But I do find myself getting bored with Jimmy. It seems like his solos and general lead work always sound the same. Doesn't matter what song it is. I always hear people say "oh, he's just holding back". I don't think so, I think that's all he's got. It's still good, but it's just old to me now.

Overall it was a very good 2nd set, but the magic they had in the first set didn't quite last through the rest of the show. Surprisingly, there was a pretty good vibe about the whole experience. The cops in the lot were busting people all over the place. They said there was going to be "heavy enforcement" and there sure was. They traveled in gangs of 5 or so. Then security was the worst I've ever seen there. Empty EVERYTHING in your pockets. that sucked. Whenever I go to a show, for some reason my pockets end up full of a bunch of crap. Right before it was my turn to get searched, the security guy puts on a pair of fucking surgical gloves and tells me to bend over, but he couldn't keep a straight face. It was pretty funny at the time. As I was leaving we saw a bunch of security tackle some guy. Wish I had my camera. It was kind of fucked up, but I don't know what the guy did to deserve it...

Anyway, I still say it was the best post jerry dead/too show I've ever seen. The tapes won't lie, but I probably won't listen to them anyway.

Went to Chulajuana tripping, not a very good thing as it highlighted the missing x factors and the struggles between Shaq and Kobe,er I mean Phil and Bob. Last night Irvine was entirely different. Guess Cali's finest green and alcohol work better these days than tripping. Great show with a much more Hunter/garcia center than whatever the shit they did insane diego. RRE at the Knitting factory tonight. At the Casbah insane diego Sat night.

A fantastic night of music at the old Irvine Meadows. Pleasant evening sunshine greeted fans anxious to enjoy some Shakedown Street festivities proir to showtime. The late arriving crowd, due in large part to prohibitive traffic on the 405 Freeway, mostly missed the Warren Haynes opening set. My familiy was no exception, but we felt fortunate to have arrived early enough to see the Deads set in its entirety. For starters we were treated to a well played Stranger. Song 1, set 1 always is a bit of a warmup, especially when it comes to the mix, but the boys were particularly sharp. Warren got a chance to revisit the Phil and Friends material he is so familier with when playing No More Do I and it benefitted from his vocal prowess. In fact, vocals are clearly a strongsuit of this lineup as the harmonies were extreamly tight. Next was the obligatory West LA and it was a treat for us being from that end of town. Bertha was fast paced fun and Patchwork Quilt a solemn ode to Jerry. The band was clearly interested in highlighting all the lead instruments as Warren, Jimmy and Jeff traded solos throughout the night. In fact, though I feel him to be a superior lead player, Warren often stood aside as Jimmy took the leads runs when it came to material most familier to last years incarnation of the group. I think he was more than up to the task on this night. Strange Remain featured a tremendous riff and was a textbook reading by Mickey with his unique vocal stylings. Then the meat of the set began as Phil launched into Cryptical. I mentioned to my wife that this was a great example of a song the boys could have utilized while Jerry was still playing. The version was amazing and quickly transitioned into a superb Other One. Phil bombs galore. This was the tightest song so far and rather than returning to the Cryptical ending they launched into a steamrolling Around and Around. This was played with a deliberate tempo and featured great singing all around."We'll be back in just a little bit". Nice, mellow crowd between sets helped by the fact that the show was not a sell out like last year when it was a bit of a mad house. Long setbreak leads to Low Spark. Slow and strong. Great singing and jamming. After some time in the stratosphere we arrive to Half Step and this was as tight as you'll hear. The end vocal jam (Across the Rio Grande) featured some beautiful, improvised harmonies. As good as anything post Jerry I've seen. The new Warren song has a lot of potential and was played with a great deal of passion. UJB got the house excited and the lyrics were almost nailed entirely (teleprompters help). The Wheel featured yet another improvised vocal harmony (A little more ground). Then comes Ruben and Cerise with Warren leading this vocal rich song making me think of early 90's Buckeye Lake. Drums and Space made me think of the fact that this is the one element of the band that has truly evolved for almost 40 years. You can certainly tell as Mickey and Billy twist and turn the rhythm. So Many Roads featured Bobby on lead vocal and he got wrapped up in the emotion of the songs finale belting out So many roads to ease my soul. This was an evening where Bobby was grinning and having a blast most of the night. Tons of Steel was a poignent tribute to Brent and Music Never Stopped benefitted from its placement as a second set closer. This is something they should have done with this song years ago. Finally, following the donor wrap came a high powered Casey Jones. Amazing energy. The end of the song sped up as they belted out the chorus, driving that train high on cocaine. My thought was they might finish the earlier Cryptical but after such a powerful Casey they chose to wrap things up. What a night. Almost 12:30. Thanks for your time.

Pretty thorough reveiws here, but I'll offer my (slightly) abridged version anyway...

Aside from the near strip search upon entry and the cops busting kids for open containers (of all things) I loved the way the show started. It was a nice little jam that (dare I say) had hints of Dark Star in it, at least to my ears. The Stranger was very nice, and I already thought we were on a better course than last year.

No More Do I and WLA Fadeaway were both well played - it;s always nice to hear Fadeaway in socal. Bertha was smoking. I love this song, it's so straighforward and seemingly easy to rock out. Last night was no different. Patchwork and Only the Strange Remain brought Bertha's energy down a few notches, but the Cryptical>Other One>Aroundx2 made up for it. Cryptical and TOO were both sweet and psychedelic just like they should be, but Around and Around may have been the standout of the three. Very nice southern-fried-funky lines played by warren and jimmy. Very very good first set.

Unfortunately, I think they lost some mo in the second. Low SPark was nice, as was 1/2 Step and there were some cool dissonant jams mixed in there. I agree that Bobby did So Many Roads more than justice - I love the song and he performed it as well as just about anyone. Overall, though, the second set let me down. I may have been tired, but it seemed like the band was too.

Here's my theory: Warren is a stud. He's a great musician and has so much gravitas, that when he's onstage with anyone, it seems like he's the leader, even now. Last night it seemed like Warren lost steam in the second, and hence, the band slowed down (and hence, I slowed down). Maybe others saw it differently, but as much as I like hearing him do his solo acoutstic set before the show, I think he should chill and save himself for the main show.

Oh well, I love the boys in socal and last night was no exception, although I found Phil's comment that "we don't really think we have a market down here in LA" very strange. First, they've been playing LA for at least 35 years, and always had a warm welcome here. Second, I felt as if I should lend Mr. Lesh my Thomas Bros. Guide so he could see that we were at least 25 miles outside of LA proper. Maybe next time at the Hollywood Bowl? Just a thought...

KJMAL I THINK U WERE THE ONE WHO GOT TIRED?:-)

BOBBY RIPPED UP SO MANY ROADS, THAT SONG BELONGS TO HIM NOW. SHOULD BE NO SUPRISE SINCE HE USED TO SING MOST OF THE LINES ANYWAY. GIVE SOTM AND LOSER TO WARREN!

SanDiego was WAYYYY better. Strip search sucked, traffic sucked. Music was ok, called a stranger opener and it was nice, NMDI is awesome but they just missed the booming solos, check out 11-17-03 disc 3 ...WOW (actually that whole show)

Cant even comment on the rest, Jimmy is getting boring, Warren is pouring out his heart and sole, Bobby did a very nice So MAny Roads and Phil was just poppin along ...TONS of STEEL probbaly sounded the best...Reuben and Cherise was good but didnt care for the palacement. WAY coolk venue, but they shut down at 11 and the dead played till 1!!?? should have skipped for shoreline ...SanDigeo was a whole different trip...just my thought$

What Mickey said when he stepped up to the mike after the encore was something to the effect of , You know this good feeling that you have now? Take it home and do something good with it in the world. Hug someone you love. I think he was telling us it isn’t enough anymore to just absorb all the good vibes, but its our duty to spread it around in the world.
What a pleasure and a privilege to see this band again at Irvine Meadows!! Just think, it was less than 10 years ago when everyone took the Dead for granted, you always knew there would be another show. But this changed overnight, suddenly there were no more shows… I remember how my heart was broken, how depressed I was for about a year, knowing there were no shows to look forward to. I couldn’t even listen to any Dead tapes, it just depressed me more. I went to the various TOO shows and it just wasn’t quite the same. Then in 2000, I saw Phil’s band and knew the magic was back. I think I like Phil’s band a little better. Phil taking on the Jerry vocals, and its like he can’t sing, and knows it, but God bless him for stepping up to the plate to sing anyway! But as old as he is, there is such great emotion in his voice. Going to Carolina, won’t be long before I’ll be there Same with Mickey, he knows he cant sing either, says he sounds like a “white man rapper”. But I love the way he sings Fire on the Mountain! It only hurts when I laugh, so I roll on the floor
I am so happy whenever I hear Warren singing old Brent tunes- some great songs we never thought we would hear again. Like Just a Little Light and 5000 tons of steel.
The highlight for me was hearing The Ballad of Ruben and Cherise !! WHOA!! What a treat that was. I don’t think I ever heard the Dead play that one. How wonderful it was up in the terrace, uncrowded, standing under the big speakers and absorbing it all, cool breeze blowing, I just close my eyes and dance and go to that place in my head where there is no thought, no anxiety, no worry, only the music, and it strikes the chords of my very soul. I feel just like I did when I was 18, dancing to the Dead , and that was a long time ago. Only it is harder for me to remain standing through a whole show now, I don’t know how the band does it.
What a precious gift to hear this music again. How often does it happen in life that you lose something you love so much, and then one day you get it back again or you get a second chance? Not too often, cherish what you have, today and every day that you have it, because you never know when it could be gone tomorrow.
Thanks for the show. It was all Dead, you gotta love that!

Warren has both..

And yes..so good to have the oppotunity right here in So Cal music..

Phill.."No Market in LA"..Hahahahha...Never Trust a Pranskter..Or is it..Never Prank with their Trust Fund..LoL..

And buy the way.....heard Mickey say it a few times before. It is probably the only vocal contribution by mickey that is acceptable.

Yeah - I liked what Mick had to say - and I think it deserves a spot on the setlist along with "donor/headcount". Unfortunately, I can't say the same thing about his singing...

And for the record, I think Jerry had one of the greatest voices in the history of American music. So human, so authentic, so soulful.

Cheers to the Fatman.

well the scene on the outside of the venue sucked because of the Irvine PD the strip/DNA /Cavity search (The VENU STAFF) on the way in created a huge number of people who missed a large number of tunes in the first set!!! the music was great but the setup with the seats leavs no space to dance, yes some of us still spin away at shows, and the no fun in the isle policy is a fucking joke,.... Music B+ Venu D-, lets just hope it improves as we leave the mess that is southern cali,.... wnat me to enjoy a venu here , book the Warfield or better still the old Ventura Co. Fairgrounds,......... the Evil that is Clear Channel isn't even beeing seen by you guys it seems, your not offended by the 50 plus arrests for minor infractions like smoking a bowl?? whay not because it didn't happen to you ? and how about the wholesale rippoff of tens of vencors at the hands of the GDM Thugs at phoenix? or are your blinderf fixed on the set list only,... don't you want to hear a few other tunes or are thes few, often repeated offerings what you want,....... the furher this goes on the deeper my appreciation for the mastery that is PLQ grows,..... and waht the hell is with damn near hour set breaks??? any comments?are they getting massages or what??? Hey sound crew more than a few of us are seeing all the shows do you tink we could hear somthing different at the set break( if you remember to put anything on at all: see Phoenix- atleast 20 minutes of silence why??

Mandy: What a cool, from the heart review. My favorite reviews on this forum are the ones that describe the contours and feelings of the listener's soul, during the music. 18 was a long time ago for me too....but I can still go to that place now and again, especially with Phil's quintet!!! That band really showed me it was possible after the Jerry. I owe a debt of gratitude to those two fellows. (I love you too Bobby, Mick and K!)

shit what do you expect? People still think the democraps don't persecute the drug war with the best republicrap. They seem to forget Bill Clinton locked up more non violent drug offenders than Bushie 1. Yet you would think the dem party is the save all to all our problems.

Certainly would have helped at Irvine if they would have had signs saying womens cavity search here, mens cavity search here.

>SanDiego was WAYYYY better

agreed--way better song selection and they got out most everything--at irvine--they lost the crowd somwhere during WLA--the crowd faded away when the song went on way too long and I couldn't help think that 'glory road' was 'the new country' as in new country radio almost of the NashVegas kind--if you know what I mean. and I'm sorry if you do! that said I do like the lyrics--it'll make someone a great cover tune.

as for shoreline tonight--well it'll be your basic saturday night bobby sings all the b!tch goddess tunes.......... OMSN is a given

prolly get the scarlet>fire and the sugar magnolia....... I won't name taht which shall remain unnamed so as not to spoil it.

gimme a mtns on the moon, please!

Irvine meadows is a horrible venue...Grateful dead's been my fav band for years. there's them and then there's everything else, but I thought the show just plain blew. I never thought i could be disappointed hearing a live cryptical and rub/cherise....Man I still love this band, but I think the wrap-up is right around the corner

I for one thought this was an awesome, powerful show. I saw six guys playing their hearts out all night and I thought the sound was crisp. Low Spark was awesome and So Many Roads totally blew me away. The single image that captures the whole night for me was a quick flash of smiles between Phil and Bobby during the second set that was briefly caught on the big screen.

The Dead live! There is no past or future and the Golden Age is this very moment.

Oh well, maybe it just sounded great to me because I was sober...

Peace.

SD and Irvine were both really good from a musical sense. who cares about the cops and shit that is what you judge a show by, at least I dont.

of course the wrap up is right around the corner. this is not the Grateful Dead, not even close.

Irvine was way better for everything IMO, except the strip search. I had a couple g's of mdma in my coin pocket and right when I got to the front, a staff guy goes up to the guy who was searching my line and says "you are the guy who found all the drugs tonight, good job" I started to sweat my ass off.

San Diego scene was really lame, there was barely no one there, and alot of chattering idiots!
