yes The Dead are back in SD :-) hope it is as soulful and wonderful as the PLQ show there 5/24/02....get a copy of that night if you don't have it...Karl Denson sat in for Hard to Handle in the 1st set and then the Eyes>King Solomon's >Stronger than Dirt in the 2nd set. maybe The Dead can try their hand at that trio of songs again.....

I know we all miss Taperrob for the up to the minute lists and photos, but I'd be willing to help out tomorrow at Irvine. I don;t have a camera that emails pristine pics, but I'd be happy to text message the setlist to someone that wants to post it...

LH..post up there had Me and My Uncle..you had El Paso but something in my head says Mexical Blues..??...

Anyway,...Here it goes w/ disclaimer.."Delirious as I am from long day/nite.."

Music this evening was somewhere between Avante Guard Country Western..21st Century Acid Rock..Good Old Grateful Dead sans Jerry and a set 2 in some places like Live for the Fans Rehearsal..

..Phil worked Bobby's ass off..Bobby handling it well..

Phil as animated as ever and more so don't know why..

Jimmy playing VERY little lead..made me feel uncomfortable so I tried not to look to much stage right..I was 7th row right in between Jeff and Phil..Thanks Rev Bud..I owe you..literlly..never paid ya for ticket..Ha

Standing On The Moon was all Bobby..Phil, Warren, and Jimmy playing along watching as if Bobby was swimming where Rip Tides are know to pull ya out from shore..Warren there with slide ready to save Bobby and Phil pushing him furthur out to sea..Jimmy from way on the beach checking it out with a cell phone in hand gunna call 911..Ha..

Bob managed to swim thru it and get to shore safely..Woulda liked some group "Rather Be With You's"..

And one song set 2 Phil and Bob did one Verse as duet..forgot which song..that was cool..Think maybe Franklin's Tower..

Best part of show for me was strong Drums and then outta Space into High Time..

Made my nite..Fully played all instruments..great harmony...Way way Way believable..was awesome..felt vibes from all over the place..esp remembering hearing all the 69-70 versions and hearing live again so beautifully and powerfully played was what I loved about those shows and so damn nice to feel again esp in it's raw infancy such mighty good stuff

Which really hits it on the nose..The rawness of the show..the winging it on some of the tunes..Really..what I liked bout the band in the beginning was just that..Polished and ragged both..depending on tune..day..substance consumed..Now for differenct reasons..some obviously sad in that certain players are not here anymore..But..IMO..glaringly similar in appeal..Band playing too good was never a problem before and will not ever be..Ha..

As far as Zoner gathering..we did it..all accounted for..Cell Phones rule..I even got to meet and hung out in the lot with Gunners Dad..

Gunna still pass on Irvine tho due to work..and too soon after this evening..will be wanting more tho prob bout just time first song is played and I did not make 90 minute drive..

Oh Well..Those going to shows rest of Leg 1..you'll like what ya hear..Leg 2 and beyond..as I have read others saying same thing and now fully believe to be true.....Watch Out...

Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow
What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned
Several seasons with their treasons
Wrap the babe in scarlet colours, call it your own

The PA is in Stereo, and as close as you were you prob got mostly stage sound, that's why you couldn't hear Jimmy. I noticed the same thing at Red Rocks, on the right side down front I couldn't hear Jeff at all, soon as I went back behind the tapers everybody was in the mix. The sound is great, you could pick out any instrument to focus on, good job Wiz!

Glad you guys got such a neat show, hope they bring that Slipnot Hoagie back east.

Sittin was strong..Teased Cumberland, barely teased Sittin, jammed and then Mississippi Riva..

Yes..The sound was better a bit furthur back..

As far as Jimmy..I was not not looking stage right..so what my ears did not hear my eyes did see..More Jimmy would be nice..8 Miles High had Jimmy wailing.

I think Warren sang High Time...was a collective effort vocally for sure..

Yeah..Lord Henry..Get in here and write a real review will ya...

Here is a short review from a buddy that I saw 150 or so Grateful dead and jerry shows with "back in the day". Nine years since Tom has seen the Dead (except for an occasional Ratdog show here or there). I had been thinking about going for two months and didn't know right up until the last minute if I would go or not.

Sitting at work yesterday morning, I put out an all points bulletin asking if anyone would like to join me. No takers. Around 1 pm, I convinced a non-Dead friend to take a ride down there with me.

Things get a little blurry after arrival but the main point of interest is that THERE WAS NO ONE THERE.

San Diego has never been Dead Central but I am talking 7,000 in a place that holds 20,000.
A three section amphitheatre with a lawn behind. Bottom 2 sections were full but the third section was only slightly used and the lawn was for stragglers.

The video screens were set up but they didn't use them, and, get this, NO spotlights. None. That's a first for me at a dead show. NO spotlights. No security, no cops in the parking lot, concession stands closing early. NO ONE.

Truly freaky. I had this overwheming feeling of " What if they had a Dead concert and no one showed up ?" I felt embarrassed for the band (even though they get paid regardless).

The music was good if not a little punchless. I expected much more from Warren Haynes than he delivered. Overall, it seemed like the entire band knew that the show was a financial disaster and they played like it. The set list left something to be desired, they are definitely moving in a different direction, I just don't know if it is a good one. Looking at all their lists this tour, they are more about playing Dead rarities and songs they like from their past (Beatles, Dylan, Byrds, Traffic, ect.) sixties nastalgia stuff.

Grateful Dead Lite indeed.

Last nights show was beyond compare! As indicated the HIGH TIME was definitely the highlight. Who sang? Who else!!?? Warren absolutely nailed it so beautifully!

The dead had that hard core full sound last night that really rips and thunders through the MTs and Canyons in CA. They were really tight and watching each other for changes, taking turns with leads, giving the music to Jeff which is really cool!

LTGTR was a sweet opener, light, poppy, everyone smilin!

8 miles high was jammed way out and very cool!

SOTOTW was smokin ....so fun, so tight and oddly played way down in SD but band is telling us how much fun they are having on this tour! Just look at the first 3 songs!!!!

Other 1st set highlightsm the new speedyway was sooooooo good, made me really think of Jer/DeerCreek 95 w/ gate crashers. They dropped into a really nice tempo at the end of the tune and let it ride for a few measures...."This darkness got to give"

Cumberland was not a snooze, it was way tight with bobby takin the vocals and not messin the tempo up like he usually does. I was actually pleasantly surprised by mid song how much I was enjoying!

Masons>Loser was interesting, couldnt quite get everyone in synch with the big boom for "Last bad deal in the country" but it was still very nicely played and solid solid solid!!

Warren nailed the Mr. Fantasy playing his normal cruch chords and killer slide with 'ALL THESE YEARS" renditions.

I am so pleased with the control of this band, ,really listening, making room for jams and turning it over to a player to take the music where they know and want it to go. Not taking things to far out but instead guiding energy into the next tune, thats what the slipnot was for to open second set and thats what the LTGTR wa sused for to go into Self Defense, which actually was tight, errie, Jimmy tore it up, he digs this tune, ,Warren was even shakin his rump a bit and lookin at Micky!

Indeed Jimmy was not playing as mush as I have seen, for example Warren took all of the solos in Fanklins, and by the last ones his guitar had that tone, that sick ridiculous tone that he gets on a les paul, goosebumps...

Nof 1000 stars was standard, I'll take any version of this tune, no huge jam at the end....DRUMZ>SPACE was killer!!!!! Bob was going off, at one point Mickey looked over at him as he walked back to the rotto drums in the back and you could tell he was diggin the krutzman groove.

SOTM was very nice, good desription about Phil pushing Bobby as he was and he responded beautifully all night. It was really a Bobby and Warren night. Those 2 shined, Phil dropped afew bombs and really was enjoying Bobbys playing last night, becoming very animated and give the head bob a few times while Bob actually had his good timing down!

Johnny B goode was sweet, very high energy, ,they didnt loose it all night ,Bobby messed up one lyric but big deal..SOLIDSOLIDSOLID show!!! 9 out of 10 for me!!!

Sorry fopr the scatterbrain review, , still mesmorized by the mountains on 74 after coming back this AM and back to work. See you in Irvine tonight for an Easy Wind and who knows what else? I love this band...they are the Real Deal and best lineup for sure!

Yeah..It was like Okay here ya go Aging Bearded Rock Star Bob..Do you thing man..esp SOTM..Phil motioning with his head a few times during evening go to the mic BOB..Go Man Go..You're up..

((((( Bobby )))))..Like a puppet ona string between Phil and Warren..:-)..

PinochaBob..Rat Mule..Whatever..it was fun to see him being middle man sounding good and not too often with that deer in he headlights look on his face..but did see him roll his hand..right as Sailor transitioned to Saint..saying to teleprompter guy "hey man..I need the words ..roll the screen"......:-)

It was happy birthday to Candice....

Snooze was the Dear Mr. Fantasy. Utterly forgettable. Jimmy played his little digits off, so I guess GDad just was in the "hole". Drums were just terrible. If it weren't for Phil, Jeff and Bobby keeping time it would have been a mess.

Most tunes had a highlight...the "it" factor, but I didn't get that from an entire song.

On the whole this band is the real deal. A TON of fun, really. Loved the fun factor, and was very pleased that I went in with zero expectations and came out quite joyous.

Note: Whatever effect Bobby and Phil were trying to achieve vocally with the Franklins. PLEASE, DO NOT EVER DO THAT CRAP AGAIN. It sounded horrific, jarring, OFF.

Nice to meet MerryPrankster, saw Lord Henry and GDad, crossed paths with Gunner very briefly, and darn....the super nice guy in the lot who introduced himself...

TJW is sorely missed. A debt of gratitude. The beach looks great, and I am on my way.

>>Grateful Dead Lite indeed.

No foolin'!

Glad to hear everyone had a great time last night, as I did, it was a party from start to end, being with good people and starry eyed visionaries, to dream of a past's ressurection and impending colorful blossoms. Interesting feelings about this show. The morning of and the day before, I felt no anticipation for the show, oddly enough, it was like another day, and hey guess what? the dead are in town. Usually I can't sleep the night before, but here I remained in my calm, ready for a day of easy fun rather than a mind trip. But of course, I am all about the mind trip.

Great to have the Dead and crew back in San Diego, twas a beautiful day, so nice to see all those heads gathering around in the sunshine. So wonderful to see all the zoners, you guys rock! Seemed like a show for friends and family. Homemade sasparilla in the lot whoo hooo!!

Warren came on at 6:00 on to a very organic stage setup, looked like a city under the sea sparklin all the colours of the summer sun. Among the songs he played Beautifully Broken, I'll be the one, In my Life, Ray Charles song, and an outstanding, soulful version of Stella Blue to end the set. He poured his heart out to 1/3 of the amphitheater, like open-ended memories waking up, glowing and breathing in timeless eternity. God I love this guy.

7:15 the prophets of past took the stage.
Nice to see them all on stage, the crowd was filtering in, and the show began a rollin' slow, quick jam started and then right into LTGTR (my first one!) very fun, not much energy to it though, musically it was lackin to me but the vibe was there ready to set the pace for some crowd pleasing tunes and some eternal sound worshiping later on. (I think that they should play How Sweet it is)a little bit o jammin here and there, it weaves its mystical arua of a time not long ago, but of a consciousness so modern we forgot it in the past. Not anymore, in some circles it still perpetuates and changes dynamic, and still spirals like life itself. 8 MILES HIGH, blessed be the gods!! So so glad to hear this, one of my favorite songs, and a perfect gem for these guys to play. Unfortunalty, while it was great to hear them play this song, it felt rushed, half assed, it seemed like they have been playing it for years and were going through the motions, when in fact this is only the 2nd time and should be a strong point of exploration and imagination. The vocals were very nice though, great harmonies, what a song, hopefully it will develop into more.

SITTIN ON TOP O THE WORLD was raging! Got me dancin all over the place, sideways and up side down. Finally they are bringing some energy!! MASON's was done very nicely too, a bit rocky at some parts but all in all done with some geat jammin at the end of it. Hopefully this will sound good on tape. I really dug a lot of the jams after and between songs, the band didnt have to worry about being there for the music and could explore themselves better within the context of sound and rythym. Loser was ok, I cant stand how Bobby sings a lot of these songs, I like his voice, but his vocal phrasing sucks and is almost insulting. We paid 60$, the least you could do is try harder!!! The end solo was very nice, thank you Warren.

Cumberland snooze was next, cant really comment on this, I had listened to 4 different Q versions that day and well, thats that, why ruin a good thing? New Speedway was good, very bluesy, and different from the West Coast Gangsta PLQ version. HELP>Slipknot! was a huge surprise that late in the set!!! woohoo, SLIPKNOT! was tremendous and very spacey, shades of light and dark, light and dark, not fast, not intense, relaxed and ready to the point of mystery!! Good stuff, reminds me of days past by.

Interlude: We missed you Jimmy.

I am wondering whats up? Jimmy barely played all night, he didnt get busy until Self Defense, and even then he was soloing like it was a studio album. All night Jimmy was filling in leads and never taking the reigns to steer, nothing but Fills, one of two quick solos. My heart, its bleeding! Tell me you were not there and I will believe you. Oh noble one, how I missed you.

Then cause he looked so bored, he lit up a cigarette right on stage and puffed away like a badass guesting with Mule, midnight in 95. Yeah well, he looked bored. and I'm sorry but the cigarette disturbed me because that is something HE WOULD NEVER DO at a PLQ show.

More thoughts on the Dead,
or How I longed for the Q but still had a fun time.

Is it me? or do you feel like this band isnt trying very hard to put out exceptional music. Surely the vibe, love, and laughter are there. These products of congregation and admiration, but the essence seems to only come and go whimsically mvoing waiting to strike and retreat again. These guys are all professional musicians, they need to BRING IT! and take more chances. It so relaxed that I feel like I'm at Dead on the Bay, or Dead on the Mountain, River, you name it. Lazy Lazy River is what I hear, and though it sweet it aint takin me anywhere. And then the primal essence rears its head to take you spinning now. The term "Dead Lite" while being halarious in its own right, is so so so so sos sos os sos os sosos os osos so so TRUE. I know a lot of heads are very accepting of that, since the Grateful Dead themselves became this way, but FUCK THAT! ITS TIME TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE> and HIT A HOMERUN!

LH,..a musician..and a phan..Loves the music as some love the Torah..A nod to LH hat yesterday.. him looking very rabbinical..a fervor justified with passion..and love of the energy..cannot be denied..SamuriRabbi..

Remmeber Phil talked about The Dead / TOO being like an 18 wheeler..PLQ the Ferrari..

So they chopped off 2 wheels..Joan and Rob and added one Warren..

So now..It's a 17 wheeeler..A bit outta balance at the moment..But man..on a downhill grade..pretty fun bumpy ride..

2nd set , give me the raw meat!

As smoke receeds and light move about, slow hues and sparkling motions....a taste from a weave, this interconnectedness breathes...slipknot....
As I do recall, Gdad is right, Mexicali Blues came on next (not elpaso or MAMU hehe) a ballroom of a good time, yay Jimmy is soloing, hooray! pick up the pace boys and girls, lightin is flashing>LTGTR jam comes back to ensure a great night! what a cool setlist. SELF DEFENSE if HILARIOUS! almost as funny as Baba Jingo but not as cooool. ha! 1st time I ever heard heard it, eh its ok, Jimmy solo was really nice to hear but it didnt lead anywhere. Definatly cheesy but it got me dancin for a bit.

Alright, now is the time to get real. One of my favorite aspects of seeing the dead thee is hearing the Bobby songs with Phil and Warren and Jimmy. SAILOR>SAINT was as beautiful as I remembered it, and probably the highlight of the show for me. They are beautifully composed pieces and were done with lots of Pride and Love. The jammin in between and at the ends of the songs were fantastic, so nice to get lost for a little while, to dream a dream, of Saints and Sailors.

Night of the 1,000 stars, I cried I cried, for visions of the highest illumination poured through my heart. And through it all I still felt love at the end of the day, love filled by hope.

Molecular Jam woooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Fuckin awesome and primal, the stuff this band is made of. They were so good at weaving the fabric and creating the space, I thought that they had transformed right there from the ageless old man to the stuff of legend. Molecular as in the smallest parts binding together to form something greater!!!!!! Fabric of life!!! the suns magnificent heat! its heart!! LIFE!!!!ETERNITY!!!!

High Time was beautiful, enough said...
Milestone was radical, nuff said...
and the last one, wont even go there! :-)

Somehow I found myself not realizing the show was ending, ragin to JOHNNY B GOODE. Hot damn, its been a while!!!!!!!!

Highlights:
8 Miles High
Sailor>Saint>
Molecular Jam
When a HAWK landed on top of the stage and sat there in natural honesty, listening to a tune for you.

Closing thoughts...

Its hard to tell from my review, but I did have a good ol fun time. Nothing like how I would feel after coming out of the Warfield last september, but good nonetheless. I kinda expected more for them, even though I knew it would be kinda just like that. All the musicans on stage are outstanding, and I think they all shine better in their own forms, rather than forming together. Thats what the Grateful Dead was all about, a group of guys who played together so well, they could conquor eternity, because the peices fit so well, they shared one consciouness and showed us a true vision of UNITY.

I wonder if theres a goal to all this? or is it just me again? Are we striving for enlightment? to pay the bills? or have a wonderful time while we are here?

Certainly I had a wonderful time....

That would in my world be "Molecular Jelly"..

To me..each show I go to nowadays makes my life better in a way..

Sitting in contemplation, I can't believe that people aren't taking about the attendance last night. With the megaopolis that is LA/San Diego, the amphitheater should have been stuffed to the gills. Come on, there's at least 20 million people within two hours. I wonder if the band is selling better in some of that east coast density, and if that's why we're getting one nighters out here in their backyard. It's obvious, many, many people aren't buying into the new incarnation.

And they should. Like Weir said last night "this ain't the real thing but it's close enough to pretend."

Pretend, I will.

20 Million People all to the North..where there is a show tonight..Irvine will be packed..

Make it 23 million when ya add the 3 million additional people in Tijuana within 4 miles of venue..

If last night had been a soccer game or WWF wrestling it woulda been a sellout..

I did flash on the fact that so few were there and that mighta been the vibe of set 2 as a sorta rehearsal..

The lot was a cool..Vendors doing bizness..but not that much..Props tho to them for schlepping that stuff around with them year after year..

LH was right..WHY are they-we there..??..

Set 1 was Phil asking..why are YOU here G.Dad..

And when all was said and done..giving me the nod to stay in La Jolla and not make trek to Irvine this evening..

I grew up in Boston. It required no thought whatsoever to hop in the car to see a show, as long as it was within SIX hours. 23 million, and only a handful show up. Makes me think, that's all.

But then again, I'm not going up to Irvine either. Man, does that venue suck. Reminds me of Fiddlers Green in Denver.

Like a horse race..take all the versions of GD other than Phils bands and have a race..

Leg 1 is the horses leaving the starting gate..

East coast starts the long run up the backstretch..

I am betting on this line up to win like Secretariat did in the Belmont Stakes..

And down the stretch they go...

Side bet..G.Dad cashes his ticket on Mexical being 2nd set tune not Uncle or El Paso..Ha..

listening to the sototw. i can't believe anyone would find this incarnation of the band lacking. mediocre recording aside, this version screams! warren rips it, boppin' phil, uptempo drums, they make all the changes. no, it isn't 5-11-72 or 2-13-70, but GUESS WHAT???????, it's 39 YEARS since the acid tests and these guys are outrunning phish!!!!!!! come on . . .

listening through this mason's, i still stand by my assertions. perhaps i'm not of the overly critical variety, but i'm one of those who doesn't get a chance to see 50 shows a year or anything like that. '01 plq was my first post-jerry experience, and i suddenly felt like turning on all my old pals. oddly, the experience wasn't always mutual. just goes to show how subjective the whole thing can be. when walking out of msg on 9-2-90, i ran into a pal. i was wide-eyed beaming, "how 'bout that dark star, man? WWOOOWW!!!!" he just yawned and said, "whatever, dude. nassau was better." just goes to show that some will always find fault somewhere (not that i thought there was any to find).

i'm interested in the low show attendance thing, too. as an east coaster, the west's nonchalance to their best band always startled me. oakland, eugene, portland, seattle, people could have been at home, or a show. in nyc, you knew you were at a show and the audience was HUNGRY. summer '01, cuthbert in eugene (a tiny place) was half-full. people chatted during the show. the band played well, but not over the top. then came hartford a few weeks later. the crowd was pumped, hootin and hollerin, many family in attendance who hadn't seen shows since jer, and guess what? serious delivery. is there a correlation? a symbiosis? like the jam once said, "what you give is what you get."

my 2 cents.

the attendance thing is kind of interesting...

last year, all the west coast folk were yelping as to why only 3 WEST COAST shows.....

so this year what happens? they give you guys 4 CALIFORNIA shows, and the 1st one out of the gate is not even close to a sellout......

and you ask why does the EAST get most of the shows??? its been said before. the west coast may be their home, but the east coast is where the fan base is.

like the reviews LH and GDad

I think the fans deserve some effort on the part of the band and should utilize all the potential available to them. It seems like Warren is held at bay when he solos which is too bad since he is on awesome guitar player. To hear him let it rip like he dsoes with the Allmans would be a real shot in the arm to the mix. Hopefully they embrace what he has to offer and if Bob would just do more of his own catalog that would fare better for the band. Here he's just released a best of CD. Come on dude hawk your stuff!!

Saw the show last night and it reminded me of a Laker game. So much talent and such an unsatisfactory result FOR ME. Of course it might have been the shrooms, first real hard trip in 15 years. And it enlightened me to the fact that Jerry is still dead. Certainly not as good as the 5/24/02 PLQ which was the last PLQ, Dead whatever configuration show for me.

And while it is fun to be around all the kind people, except for the ones with kids complaining to security,it just didn't do it for me. Damn shrooms. So tonight I will go to Irvine and get sloppy,ok not so sloppy, drunk. Perhaps this is now an alchol band versus a tripping one. If Jimmy was any farther off stage he would be in an Aquarium.

For me Rail Road Earth does it for me much more now, with more light, sincerity and joy. Shit, last night I was even thinking String cheese was more interesting. Sure there were moments, those few ones between the times they were trying to figure out whose band it was,or what kind of band they were. Like the Milestones. But High Sierra is next week, Railroad Earth here in Cali all this week and MOFRO as well. All is good.

The very best moment was when this big hawk came swooping in above the crowd and landed on the edge of the stage roof. Took a look around and languidly flew off. Then it came back for one last fly over, low over the crowd. Somewhat Casteneda like,LOL. Not a raven, but no damn seagull either. Should have taken that as a clue and left as well. Jerry has indeed left the building.

So again, being among friends and like family members is always fun. But I get that at a Yonder show,RRE show,KDTU,GBA,Garaj mahal.MOfro and many more as well. For about 15 bucks. LOL
peace
jeff

Nothing worse than coming home high as a kite to read dispariging reviews.....and comments on the attendance and which zoners you saw in the audience.

This show was up there with the top five of my 30 plus PLQ shows, better than any of the red rocks last year, and better than most of my 30 some odd Jerry shows.

Hard for someone who's seen over 100 dead related shows to get 4 first timers in one show. Plus a couple the night before in Phoenix.

---"they're not playing up to their potential." Whatever, dude. 140 songs and only a handful of repeats in 8 shows....yeah, this is an oldies reunion tour.

....course, I was in the fifth row center, sitting by Bill Walton. Unlike the night before, where there just wasn't a lot of searing guitar solos....Jimmy and Warren were doing battle all night. Every lead player eventually learns to tone it down and make more music with less shredding. Warren went through that on the last PLQ tour; Jimmy is now learning that with the Dead. Listen to both of their solos on Loser and Mason's and Franklin's. The whole night was a clinic of how to play tasteful, sweet , succulent guitar.

YEs, they are holding back a bit compared to Q, but there''s an extra guitar in the band, and it's necessary, as Bobby is playing better than I've ever seen him. Sometimes less is more....as was the case with slipknot, where it was just a steady thick groove.

Past three shows have had a ratdogish contsruction to them. Some interesting arrangements...a LONG loser, for example, with many solos. And the all time best EVER night of 10k stars. Also, the LTGTR (and sat bridsong) reprise seems very bobby to me. Few jaw-dropping jams, but then again, no aimless noodling, either. Professional. Tight. Pollished. Interesting. Great harmonies. This isn't PLQ--get over it and stop comparing it to them.

This is THE line-up for me, period. I am really digging Bobby's vocals. And the drummers don't have that clumsy sluggishness like they did last summer. And Sally is clearly a better B3/organist than Rob.

Won't go song by song, as the entire first set was a highlight....no lulls in my opinion, and that strange helpless feeling that it could go anywhere at any time, as I was continually being surprised and amused. The guys were in terrific spirits....Phil and Jimmy sharing an inside joke that spanned 1/2 the 1st set and had Phil in fits of laughter. Phil was in his happy place, looking at the sky and smiling, stepping over to jam with Chimenti during Cumberland, which featured one of the best off-the wall frenzied piano solos I've seen in any dead incarnation.

Give Bobby his due...SOTM was wrenching. His voice was terrifically emotional. Same goes for Warren on High Time....this is WHY they brought him in. I dont know anyone other than Jerry that can sing with such sorrow that simultaneously has a hint of hope and redemption. Same goes for Dear Mr Fantasy---sure no double time dual lead guitar--but tWarren was HUGE. Who else can command an audience like that with his voice?

LAzy River ROad put a lump in my throat. Eight Miles High made my hair stand on end. Lots of interesting guitar work and harmonies. And Lost Sailer, never a favorite of mine....well, it is now. The juxtaposition of songs and themes could have fallen flat....slipknot into Mexicali?? and Milestones in between high time and SOTM?? had the band not been in so focussed. Come on! This is the type of set list we live for.

Drums and Space were cut short due to the 11 pm curfew. But Mickey's work on the beam at the end was a beatifully composed (albeit subtle) piece....he took a bow afterwards. And when space started, it was just the original 4! Come on, how cool was that!

As for the dual vocals on Franklin's (dewit you dissapoint me!) maybe you had to be standing 10 feet away, but I was floored at these two brothers, who have been playing together for three decades, put aside their differences, sharing the vocal duty on one of their old favorites....there was a visible tenderness between them; it was joyous.

Finally, as someone who generally gravitates toward the soundboard/taper section, I have to say being up close was amazing, and worth every extra penny on e-bay. Standing right by Jimmy's amp it was like he was in my bedroom showing me how to play all these songs....he wasn't asleep--you're high. Played the perfect part, tastefully, all night long. Never missed a single note.

Changing my fourth of July plans...going to the Gorge. I gotz to get more of this band!

I sure as hell hope you weren't the dude with the backstage pass that would not shut their mouth during Warren's set.

The Laker comparison is right on. Not to say that this wasn't so much fun for me, but it was not a spiritual rising either.

Compared to last year, no comparison. So much better. The lawn, empty, was sweet.

Now this is getting interesting.

The dude with the ebay seats...hey I've been there...you're in the prime spot, a good buzz, Bill Walton's nearby and every note sounds perfect, fresh, new tunes... you have a joyous time (which is the point, after all)...and then you hear the show later on tape and it sucks. Or maybe not.

Then there's the "grizzled veteran" of MANY shows, longing for old Dead, or raging P&F. Too mellow. Too many Bob tunes--clunky segues....Or the kid who's cut his teeth on jambands 40 years younger--he's wondering, "where's the energy?"

Lots of different opinions for this show, which makes me suspect something good might be happening...I have no idea, because I wasn't there, but you can be assured when I see them on leg 2, you'll get the definitive opinion...depending on what kind of day it is, where I'm sitting, the size of the crowd, who I am with, what kind of buzz, etc.

I'm sure I would have enjoyed Warren sing High Time, however.

A message to all. A lot of bad reviews, which is fine it's all subjective, but please try and remember not to go to shows with any expectations as to how certain songs are supposed to sound. They do what they mean to do, for the most part. If a song seems boring maybe it's a different approach, if you listen with the right ears, you might find it to be a beautifully jazzy laid back song. Don't compare PLQ to "The Dead" they are completely different bands, it doesn't matter that the Q seems to rock more. It's not always about that. The Dead are still doing what they've always been doing, They pick up some people and take them away into the nagual, and bring them back a little wiser.

yeah, perhaps that was the problem,my ears and eyes were too open. For me that is. I obviously don't have your superior knowledge of this band to disagree with what you want to think. Glad you enjoyed. I did enjoy Irvine the next night. As I have most Irvine shows dating back to 84.

>maybe your just getting old,

perhaps your just really young. And drink lots of beer. Funny how some of you are so protective and shrill. So convinced that your opinions are from on high. I am sure you all have the My band is better than your band shirts too.

>If you missed this then, you were fucked up or >just dumb.

So,hmm,if we didn't hear the show like you,or prostrate on our bended knee one is dumb? LOL
Sideshow Bob,ever heard of sarcasm?
peace

late review, but i had to come down to earth somewhat...i hung out on the lawn in sd, wished the vids were on, anyone know why not? despite small crowd and waaay too many people around me, regardless of where i danced to get away from it, who were not into the show and it took a lot of mental energy for me to tune them out, i had a ROCKIN TIME in sd, it was my birthday, and correct me if i am wrong, havent looked it up, but deer creek 6/23/93 - 11 years prior, also opened my birthday show with LTGTR.....and either the deer creek show or the starlake show the year before, they played a cumberland and a johnny b encore.....bottom line for MY SHOW EXPERIENCE was flashback city to my previous birthday shows, plus the 8 miles high and sittin on top just started my mind blowand excitement, very happy to hear masons depsite wanting more out of it, loser would have only been better for me if they would ever sing "sweet suzy" (anyone know why they stopped?), PULLEEEEZE dont dominate the rap jack, if ya got nuthin new to say- outta nowhere speakin right at those clowns next to me that wouldnt shut up.... mr fantasy- always wanted to hear it live and always missed out, warren's vocals reached my soul....thought set would end there, but no.....lazy river was ok, help slip a surprise that cranked me up ready for the enxt round....slip was clean, i used to cross my fingers that they would "make it there" together, not this time...
2nd set lost sailor/st. some of my favorite bobby, happy birthday comin out of space, i thought i was hearing things being all birthday happy and all, i looked at david and said- d0 you hear that? he did, but no one around us seemed to notice and even after the show i mentioned it to many and they were clueless. felt kinda weird about it like i was drugged more than my own self indulgence, later confirmation all the more special knowing i share a b-day with candace (and hunter, thought it was for him at first!)
Anyway, SOTM was such sweet sound to my ears, bobby did it with grace and respect. oh yeah, high time was another high point.....

its all about perspective...would the show have meant so much to me, been such magic had it not been my special day and the culmination of a lot of personal inpiration for me?

dont know really, but do know that i sure need those few shows i saw, and that big dose of magic that i never cease to feel listening to the music that was first to make my body know how to dance.....
