tuesday in utah
Hope this show is great for my friend Tom. I just sent him 60 bucks Western Union cause he is broke, no job, and is getting kicked out of his pad. He needs a good show like this, and it might even bring happy tears to his eyes as well as some new direction. He is really a good person who lost thier way, so if you see someone next to you that looks like they need a good one real bad, help him out and say "Hello Tom .. Glad You Could Make It!"
I sure wish I had $60 that I could throw around like that. You are a good person CK. I too hope that this is an awesome show. Hey, wait a second....my wife and I bought my buddy Jeff a ticket for this one. He and his wife have started a family; new house, new kid and he doesn't make much $$$. His wife highly frowned on him spending the dough to see his first post-Jerry show. His birthday is tomorrow. And Jeff and I have long tried to help each other in whatever way we can, whenever. Front row center helps. I saw two Red Rocks that were great, but not superb. With another week of shows under their belts, I hope they are tighter tonight. WOO-HOO!
What do you think they'll play tonight?
hopefully something by Lowell George
preferably not Bobby doin' Easy To Slip
I can practically hear Warren sprinkling those Lafayette RR references all over..
Spanish Moon would work
I'm afraid Bobby might sneak (hehe) out a Salt Lake City.
"Box Of Rain" for sure.
adam my grandfathers name was Gunnar Hannson and his father was Elof both from sweden. any relation? perhaps you are related to tommy or mickey? anyway i think tonite wiil be magical i have to wait for portlnd and the gorge.
Hope you all are having a great time out there!

Bobby could lead the group in a funky funky encore of LMLYP by Ween
How bout' The Same Thing? who would sing it? Bobby? Warren? Pig.. oh wait, but they all sing it.
I would die, if they played More than a feeling, and not die in a good way.

This 1st set doesn't really do anything for me
Mickey songs are all throw aways i think
Tnk, Tenn Jed, 1000 Stars, Casey Jones. All stuff i'd like to skip me over.
I dont know, compared to the other nights tonight looks lacking
>>I dont know, compared to the other nights tonight looks lacking
too soon to tell...it's only half the picture
isn't it also about the playing, not just the list???
you're right, i was just saying based on setlists alone. I'd prefer any other night over it.
but that's just my opinion anyways, im not a big fan of tonight's song choice. Someone else might love it
I've seen shows where the set lists were lame looking, but the band played the songs and transitions so amazingly that they could have played nursery rhymes and made them sound good!
If this band keeps playing at the level we saw in Shoreline and Marysville they could play anything and make it groove! I saw a few songs in these last two shows that I've never liked (nevermind which - I don't want to offend anyone!) but had to admit that the versions rocked! The setlists only tell a small part of the story...don't doubt this band...I think they are going to gel into a monster!
Dead Forever, Forever Dead
freestyle... YOU ARE MORE THAN CORRECT! I did Shoreline and Marysville as well...
After the first set at Shoreline, our entire group agreed that it didn't matter what they played in the second set, because the LEVEL of what they were throwing out there was SOOOOO amazing. Just listen to that immaculate Mr. Charlie gang! OUCH!
Don't get me started on Marysville, 'cuz that second set was one for the ages! I'm still sorting that one out!
HINT TO ZONERS: Go see the band play first, then lay down your opinions on the setlist! This isn't like it used to be... Yet it is like it used to be, with a lot more bang and creative uncertainty!
You'll hear no complaints from me!
See ya'll in Portland and Gorge!
trying to stay awake for that 2nd set list.....man this shit wires me.......however i agree with hlpslp. ya gotta be there in the groove to really know beyond the list that this music lives on and it is and it aint what it used to be....its new again, its going to evolve and go to new places, they are pulling out all the raw material and giving it a chance to become more.....i hope this incarnation lasts long enough to really experiment...thats why i always loved the dead, they took chances....lookin forward to when they are comfortable enough to play with the songs more, jam more,,,
where's that 2nd set? i feel like a kid ....

The second set was way too short....goddamn mormon curfew. They never really left the stage until after Box. But, It was a tight show. They seemed to be having fun. Good weather. Good crowd. But not mind-blowing.
was that the first wharf??
1st with the core 4.
Ok, I just saw the Salt Lake Show. My first GD was show was in 83, and i've seen roughly 75 shows in my hey-days. Warren is the man, no doubt, It was nice to see Bob and Warren singing together (especially during come together...). The accoustic Blackbird to open set 2, Warren and Bobbie alone together, was great, and black throated to follow was x-cellent. Back to set 1, Bobbie did a pretty raspy job singing Hard to Handle, with Warren picking up versus as well. The truckin jam was cool, and Tomorrow Never Knows was one of the best played songs of the night (way cool), along with Sugaree. I've seen Warren sing Sugaree as Phil as Friends, and he's got this down/licked. A perfect fit, and does it much justice for those who haven't seen. Warren also sang Alligator, which was a real treat, and well played. I love the lyrics, and Warren made it through all of them. Come together also was really good/zero complaints with the classic rock roll-outs. I saw Ratdog in UT twice recently when Wharf Rat was played, and tonights version was also really well played, with lots of emotion and delivery from Bob. Eyes Jam was fine pre/drums, so was NFA to close set 2, and it was indeed Althea after a smokin' Sugaree, with space/drums b4. BTW, DRUMZ was really good. What I can, but that the Rythm Devils are back (for all you drummers). Scarlet jam was fine, not too long though. Oh, aside from Sugaree and Tomorrow Never Knows; Casey Jones was also at the top of the best songs played. The harmony and energy throughout, and especially at the end, is awesome (Billy was playing so fast I thought he was going to lose it, lol). They've got this one down. Ok, so it's not Stephen/11, still a nice rockin set closer. MY wife thought she heard Norwegein Wood (The Beatles song..) somewhere in there, and I'm sure everyone heard the Let the Good Times Roll set 1 opener tease, which turned into The Jam (I heard Miracle here), which ultimately became Truckin. Jimmy is getting better, I'll say this. Phil was having a blast, no doubt, smiling ear to ear at times, an dleading elsewere. Finally, Jeff played the heck out of his keys tonight. Hats off to ya. For all you sceptic set list readers, just rememeber, "it's not what they played, but rather, how they played it." Take that to the bank> (along with this review<s>) Sincerely, 83, 84, 85
Yep... The first Wharf with the core four!
Congrats SLC! Hope you enjoyed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not going to get very deep here but I just got home from SLC and I had a real good time. Up close to the stage where we had our seats it was rocking and rollin. Bill Walton was dead center like 6 rows back, was funny seeing him. Wharf Rat was very nice and Bob nailed it imho. Twas a good night to be in the audience. Two days until Nampa, can't wait for some more of the same.
bial waalton can go fuck himself. I sure hope he ain't standing in front of me that token #1
jock of a deadhead. I still don't understand this shit about him being the #1 deadhead, WTF !
this makes each and everyone of us look like assholes. we ain't the bill walton's of the world. to me, this is an insult.
glad the show was good for ya'll !!!
Walton was also at Irvine, Shoreline, and Marysville. But I never heard anything about him being the #1 Deadhead, I was always pretty sure that was me so the rest of you can FUCK OFF!!!
Agreed, #1 deadheads are the ones to tell each other to go "fuck themselves"
Somehow Walton always gets great seats. Wonder if he mail orders?
Thanks for the reviews..
That guy in the bathroom at SleepTrain was right..
nice reviews...can not wait until August! Miracle and Truckin' are in the same key (E) so you may have heard some major similarities as they were jamming around.
lovin' the open minded analysis
What is up with all the hating???
Walton is fine, no different than any of us who enjoy the experience.
The Wharf rat was hot, but it was still my third favorite of the three I have seen so far this tour. (Chula Vista, Irvine)
Alligator was a highlight for me as well as Eyes and Althea. Good stuff, get out to see the boys if you havent!

Still a bit foggy but the coffee's starting to kick in. This is just my useless 2 cents and not to be taken seriously. Overall, for me personally, I thought it was a pretty good show. 19th row center eye level to the stage didn't hurt. Sure nice to get the eye candy after the sun went down. I concur with a lot of what Ronnie said above. I'll add I thought I heard a Hell In A Bucket tease early on, maybe in the Truckin' jam. Then again, heh heh... What a kick off to the night! There were some real highlights, but also a few questions. As a big Warren fan, I was hoping for something different from him. Where others got Into The Mystic or Madman or One during his first set spotlight, we got Night of 1000 Stars. But I thought it was pretty obvious things are really starting to gel with this lineup as a unit, and if it stays together we have lots to look forward to. Some of the playing was really superb and tasteful, and from everyone. All had their shining moments. The setlist didn't disappoint, but some of the segues were train wrecks. Time or two there when I felt like I just got dropped off a cliff and the band wasn't coming along. They had hit the brakes and were headed someplace entirely different. Wait til ya hear the show and see if you agree. Some folks wondered why two Beatles tunes? Were they honoring some anniversary or something? I've heard a great aud tape come out of this arena (Allmans 9-14-03 by Russ Minas) and I look forward to hearing this show again. Thought the crowd was real good. One regret is not searching out TaperRob and shaking his hand, but ya know how intentions go sometimes at a show. The curfew thing made for a weird ending as NFA seemed to just stop. I was honored they laid it on SLC, and expected them to walk off stage while we kept it happening. They never left, and then Phil does the donor rap, Bobby the vote rap, and they kick into Box Of Rain. I had 11:06 when the lights came on right after Box ended. The folks on tour might have been bewildered but the locals knew, "Yep, urine Utah". This show had a few locals looking at road maps and checking to see how far to Boise. You folks near the remaining dates have a lot to look forward to. Go see this band.
Thank you... for a real good time.
Why do you guys hate Bill Walton so much? Because he's tall? Yeah, he's a reall ass hole for being tall and liking the Dead.
Bill Walton has been the best voice for the Dead since the mid-70's. He's always quoting them as a place of inspiration. Turning fellow NBA'ers & other sports figures onto the Dead & traveling with the band at every possible moment. Standing by the band through thick & thin.. He IS the #1 Deadhead personality.. Meaning, he is the only celebrity that has promoted the Dead & it's subculture with out fail...

Does anyone know if last night's show is being streamed?
Bill Walton is a cool guy, he's a deadhead from way back.

Hey... You guys leave Bill Walton alone... I'm sure he was a Deadhead before many of you were born.
He has every right to dig the Dead! He's the sports world's biggest fan and there's nothing wrong with that.
I first met Bill at a JGB show at the Greek in 87 and he was really a cool guy! I've also been known to locate Bill when the boys used to do Mardi Gras and Chinese New Years at Kaiser! I'd get right behind Bill and we'd follow the parade all the way to the front row... Bill was always very considerate and would drop back and kind of hang on the side because um... He is aware that he's tall!
Also, Bill had a recreation of the old GD conference room table and chairs made for his personal dining room! The chairs are hand carved and look REALLY skeletal... Nice for any home decor!
I generally see Bill at all the West Coast shows, yet I usually just let him have his space... The last time I spoke with Bill was in the San Diego airport... He was bummed-out because he had to go announce a basketball game and was going to miss the Q shows at the Greek the following weekend!
So I guess he's just like all the rest of us and I really don't see any harm in that.
Peace, Love, Vote and Go SEE this band LIVE!
Hlpslpfrnk
As much as I enjoyed the Red Rox shows, I'd be really pissed hearing Bobby sing both Hard 2 Handle & Wharf Rat in the same show, w/Warren right there onstage . . . not looking forward to those 2 (nor Standing On The Moon sung by Bob, again w/Warren right there) on the least coast.
Three Beatles tunes last night Slick

True, Doctor, my mistake. I told you I was foggy. I was just coming back into the show during that so I guess it didn't quite stick in my mind. A buddy reminded me of it after I wrote that. Now that the head is clearing a little, I'm wondering about that Truckin' "tease". Though it's now been proven I can't count, I could've sworn I sang the chorus at least twice. And two friends said the boys did indeed sing the song. Just too much fun for me last night. A great time and lots of musical high points. Thanks to the boys and the family for stoppin' in behind the Zion Curtain. Hope to see you all again soon.
When the Grateful Dead went to Egypt an entourage of family traveled with them.
Part of that group were the likes of Ken Kesey and Bill Walton.

Dead fans who attended the band's Usana Amphitheatre show Tuesday are still waiting for an encore.
Even with the traditional show-ending last song folded into the second set rather than coming as an encore (due to an 11 p.m. curfew at the venue), surviving members of the Grateful Dead and their new bandmates delivered all a Deadhead could hope for: lengthy jams, intricate instrumental interplay and a set list spanning the band's four-decade history that even a casual fan could love.
The most noteworthy difference between this edition of The Dead and the Grateful Dead circa 1995, when Jerry Garcia died, is that the current incarnation seems like a much sleeker, more professional endeavor. Much of the between-song tuning and extraneous jamming is gone, replaced by a group that quickly moved from song to song with nary a pause.
Starting off with "Truckin'" and a cover of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows," the two new guitarists filling Garcia's slot on stage made their presence felt immediately, with Warren Haynes lending some tasty slide-guitar to the opener and Jimmy Herring ripping out a nice solo between songs. Haynes sang lead often during the show, sharing vocal duties with guitarist Bob Weir and bassist Phil Lesh through a first set that included takes on Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle," "Tennessee Jed," "Scarlet Begonias" and the euphoric set-closer, "Casey Jones."
The second set began with Weir and Haynes delivering an acoustic version of The Beatles' "Blackbird," and the band eventually worked its way into yet another Fab Four cut, "Come Together," bleeding it into "Wharf Rat" and "Eyes of the World" before drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann took over the stage for what seemed like an abbreviated "Drums/Space," at least in relation to years past.
The closing salvo, post-"Space," showed that this incarnation of The Dead is unquestionably worth following, even if it's not quite the same as the Jerry days. The audience's energy built continually through the night, and the final push through "Sugaree" -- performed brilliantly by Haynes -- "Althea," Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" and "Box of Rain" made for a dream trip through some of the Dead's strongest songs.
As long as this version of The Dead can deliver songs as strongly as it did Tuesday in West Valley, there's no sensible reason it should be put to rest quite yet.
that the current incarnation seems like a much sleeker, more professional? I believe most writers do a poor job on comparing Garcia to Haynes $ Herring. Just because Jerry was not as technical of a player as Jimmy & Warren does not mean they are better. Jerry was a technical and emotional player, very unique had his own style of playing he just did not have one approach of doing things which made him great!
There still is noodling before songs, why is that perceived as being bad?
More Professional? I don't get this one, they always were professional when it came to them playing.
Bill Walton took a year off of b ball( injury ,ya right) to go on tour
Just a point: "sleeker, more professional" is not necessarily synonymous with "better."
>>Agreed, #1 deadheads are the ones to tell each other to go "fuck themselves"
The last shall be first, and the first shall be last.....
I just got home from catching the last 4 shows in the West. I will take a moment and share a few thoughts, and then it’s back to work.
Part 1: Tour for me started in SLC, UT 6/29/04. My tour bud of the past few years Tim flew down from Montana and we were all set. This show being at home brought happiness to many old friends that haven’t raged since Jerry died. Arrived at the lot about 1.5 hrs before show time; within 5 minutes we had everything we needed for a great tour. Shakedown in SLC was small; in speaking with folks later, many vendors skipped SLC and Boise. What ever, I like things low key anyway.
Got into the show just as Robert Hunter was starting. He more or less played the same songs at every show – the one in SLC was not memorable. (See further notes in my Boise review)
Once inside we met up with another half dozen folks from my town and we had a great party on the lawn. If you’ve not been to USANA, it is smaller than most venues of this type and the show was far from full. The design frames the stage nicely and the Wasatch front serves as the back drop.
With this lineup for the dead I was very worried that Warren would turn it into some intense slide fest (IMO, that’s OK for PLQ but inappropriate for the Dead.) My concerns were unfounded, Warren is constraining himself nicely and his tone does not distract. Need to share that during Come Together the lights were perfectly placed and it looked like sparks were flying out of his head
As the opening notes took form and they went into Truckin' you could feel it was going to be a great show. For most of the shows I saw, the first set seems to be about getting the train up to speed. Night of 1000 Stars came a bit early but the first stars were out as was the nearly full waxing moon. Not a big fan of Self Defense or Mickey-rap but we endured. Scarlet Begonias was tasty as was the Casey Jones; I love the new arrangement. Everything made sense other than there was no Fire after Scarlet… that doesn’t bother me much these days but it does seem strange.
The second set was what made this show; WARF RAT, yes, we had called that one and it completely made the night > as this went into EYES I was euphoric. Sugaree and Althea were awesome. Outside the show some folks were handing out fliers urging everyone to NFA chant at the end of the second set (do you think those guys wanted to hear it?) The band closed the set with NFA, which of course ended with a chant, albeit very short lived; Phil came out for the donor wrap in less than a minute. The Box of Rain was perfect.
Fun show, great songs, cohesive second set… hit the road for home and pack for tour. (See part 2 under the Boise thread)
