Love all the pics.
why doesn't Phil commission some different poster artists for TXR. Or are they to busy with work for Moonalice gigs...
I like Dubois work but it's getting a tad stale.
did he do that new poster or phil's kidz
That should be a good song for this lineup.
Good evening everyone...

> Also, Quin's recordings of last night's show were a bit distorted.
The videos last night had the same problem and at the same time, the volume seems much higher than in the past. I think they need to turn it down from 11...
that is a nice little bonus! so far so good with the stream here
crank it up boys
Hi Johnny D!

i think it was the stream that had trouble keeping up there ;)
What was that little hiss from JK? Interesting...
>>Still awake...barely
where's the bo? get him in on it.
I only count 7 songs and the sound here is just so so, something is not just perfect
>>>> Was it me or was it a short night with a long break?
Yes, last night's show was a little under 2.5 hours long. I've had one set shows that were longer than that.
Tonight's set was a little short on time as well.
Is it me, or does JK seem to be holding the Bobby roll of cutting solos off a bit short.
Yep Catch. Numbering the blobs.
Ahhh! Pride reprise when I squint!

> not that long ago... streaming was a huge deal and there were lots of us here sharing in the music. I miss that
I've been noticing that there seems to be less and less folks who are here for the shows. Last night we had a skeleton crew of maybe 5-6 folks, and I get that it was a Thursday night, but then it was just down to me and Moses posting by the middle of the second set...
It sounded like Grahame's mic in particular was overdriven - doesn't sound good
half time entertainment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV28C1cbIfc
^ That's what I thought, too. Grahame's voice didn't sound bad to me but the mic did.
> Judit! Lovely picture of Gwen that was posted earlier!
I just saw that picture and it lit me up...Full of hope, full of grace, is the human face...
>>>Lance, you listening to the show<<<
No, I'm on an old beater laptop that can't deal with a stream.
I'm gassed from a long week of work & evening fun and I have a long weekend ahead so I'm laying low this evening, watching the ballgame and checking in here occationally. I like to see what they're playing and what the Philzone thinks is wrong with it.
So Johnny, are you saying that JK is holding JK back now?
>>>What was that little hiss from JK<<<
Maybe that was his little own little salute to the zone, knowing that it's probably only zoners who are buying the streams.
And Grahame played a solo or two in the 2nd set of Wednesday's show.

How do you mean?
doesn't seem to be playing the jerry role so much.
like grahame is rubbing off a bit
or... gasp. he's himself
I think that last part might be it. Scofield's bringing a radically different approach to tempo and phrasing to the game and Medeski's keyboard textures are really distinctive too, so I think JK is responding to these new sounds with a fusion of the familiar and the strange...
maybe he will stick around, then

I was feeling the same way at the show last night. Like he wasn't playing quite as much like Jerry during several parts of the second set. Seems like Scofield is rubbing off, at least regarding the solos.
I heard the blue sky tease before fire too Mike, this is so much better than the first set!
Joe Russo kicks ass!
oh, and that was a pretty good guitar solo...

I think the real key here is Phil, Sco, Medeski and Russo. Add a JK, a JGe, a Warren, etcetera, and you've got yourself a band that can go to strange places and I will follow them there...

Judit, your words certainly ring true for me.

They set a high standard. They took a lot of chances. A friend of mine used to say that the Q was Black T-Shirt Music and I always thought that was a good way to say it. It's not the GD, but it's good and interesting and scary and beautiful and breathtaking at times, kind of like these guys here tonight...
Nice Norwegian Wood teases there...

Good times in here tonight. Set 1 is uploading and should be live in a few hours. Set 2 will follow in the morning...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV2n-zc05yM
Good night everyone....
Awfully nice of them to keep the webcast going. Looked like Grahame was talking to a couple of guys about his microphone.
Hopefully, Grahame was talking to a couple of zoners who read here that the vocals on the webcast have been distorted the last couple of nights...
hopefully grahame was talking to somebody, ANYBODY, about keeping that tinny acoustic guitar small time shit off the stage while jazz heavyweights are throwing down in the other corner.
a SMOKING after midnight!!! everything i ever wanted in an after midnight...and them BAM
GL steps up to try and sing bertha.
JK attempts a recovery with a fantastic althea
despite his best efforts rest of first set seems like simplified americana BS that medeski and sco have to sit thru to give GL a few nice tunes to sing and some jams that are simple enough for him to take leads on.
ross james throws down a jam just as tasty as what was being thrown down in the grate room as i pass thru for setbreak
second set SMOKED. funky scarlet>Fire, experiemental noise/jazz DS>other one, capped by an always fucking FIRE JK dew.
rocking NFA encore.
now - ill give him that like a hurricane was pretty damn good, but ill bet anyone would sound good singing over sco's blistering leads on that one.
all in all, the moral of the story is ENOUGH WITH PHILS KIDS ALREADY
every single moment of GL in that show could have been exploratory jamming and we all would have been better off for it. i mean shit, even the setlist looks better on paper if you replace hurricane and dice with >jam>
but thats no matter, since the actual improvisational jamming isnt the real draw anymore anyway.
despite the bitching, most of the show was pretty fucking awesome.
ps; tonight confirmed it for me - the presence of john medeski in phils current bands is one of my last hopes for experimental/free/avantgarde/jazz/noise influence in this music. this guy gets it.
but all in all, for my money this week i got alot more out of delving into recordings by massacre and the golden polaminos. maybe its time for me to start figuring out some new shows to see.

Daylight, I think you're being a bit harsh on Grahame, especially in the 2nd set. I thought his vocals on Truckin' and Like a Hurricane were very good, certainly better than anyone else on the stage could do on those two songs. To me, he never got in the way and nailed those two vocals. I was surprised how well some of the three part vocals sounded last night (despite the stream quality issues). I'm pretty sure that's why Grahame is there to begin with. As great as the December '03 TXR shows were with Warren, Sco and Medeski, that lineup is missing another voice.
PLF is never gonna do extended 20 minute versions of what you want to hear and I think most of the phans are fine with that.
Seems all agree that the second set was smokin'.
p.s., Thanks so much Mike and Quin!!!!
Medeski gets it for sure. Sounds great
>>>>>the vocals on the webcast have been distorted the last couple of nights...
>>>>>the vocals on the webcast have been distorted can't uncrunch 'em, it's from the source
Dear txr sound guy,
Please fix the audio on the webcast. Thank you in advance. All the best, Moses
Damn it I fell asleep and missed that?!?!?!?!
That second set pretty much rocked my world.
I'm thinking about swinging by TXR to catch the Stu Allen, Ross James et al brunch show. If I do, I will share your request, Moses.
Seriously.
It rocked my world just looking at it, Johnny D!
also, I believe you can e-mail the webcast folks...
I like this line up a lot!
The second set smoked. (And I was there.)
Frankly, I though that the first set was boring. There were some highlights, namely Scofield and Medeski, but overall I thought it lagged.
The second set was an entirely different animal. I was watching Grahame during Like a Hurricane. At some point he visibly went pretty deep, lost in it, and I saw Phil watching him, approvingly. Nice moment. And Medeski and Scofield did some pretty monstrous stuff.
<<<boring>>>
sacrilege!
My report was similar for Thursday except I called the 1st set "stiff"
and I hardly moved my feet which was boring
haha
carry on
My boredom could have been partially personal. I was tired, and the music didn't manage to cut through that. I found myself distracted, noticing that my knees hurt, stuff like that. So I focused on Phil, which is what I do when the rest is less than inspiring.
I blame the TXR sound guy...
Grahame's vocals sounded distorted in the room. I think the problem was with his microphone, not the webcast. The sound problem really compounded the overall lack of fire on Bertha for me, it sucked the energy out of the room.
But that was one hell of a second set!
> Grahame's vocals sounded distorted in the room.
It's been like that for three nights on the stream. What happened to soundchecks and just exactly perfect?
Hey Mike - thanks for the uploads which are a great treat here on the wrong side of the pond
