Just thought I'd get this one going...
Any partial set list? Opener?
Truckin > Spoonful > Truckin > Hell in a Bucket > Big Boss Man, Gimme Some Lovin (Winwood), Alligator > Jam > Paradise?? (Mickey) > Casey Jones
Just keeps sounding better and better. Hope they save some stuff for Mansfield!
who sang Big Boss Man?
I think Joan sang it.
I don't think Rob is allowed to sing anymore
That sucks. I heard the Alabama that Joan sang on dead.net and hated it.
where did you hear it on Dead.net? or is on the 365 media thing like the fall tour?
Has 2nd set started yet? Getting the vibe from here it will be a monster night.
Jam > Greatest Story Ever Told
I saw the Valentine's Warfield show with Joan.
She has a great voice, but I hated her singing lead in Dead tunes (i.e. Casey Jones)
I plunked down major $$$ to see the Dead many times this summer, not Joan Osbourne backed by the Dead...
I thought she would occupy more of a Susan role, which would have been perfect. Singing 4-5 Jerry tunes a night, I'm just not feelin that....
However, I will try and keep an open mind until after SPAC...
I just don't understand why Rob doesn't sing anymore, I really liked him!
Here's the link for the video

Jam > Greatest Story > Dancin > Jam > Bird Song
I agree 100% August. No 110%
What's wrong with having a strong singer? Bobby and Phil can't sing everything nor should they. Or would you rather here Mickey sing those songs?

You guys have the set list now the first review.
I just got home. Bottom Line - One of the best I've ever seen and heard. A++++. From the setlist to the jams...all very good. First the crowd. Not like VA beach at all. Very lively. Balloons started early, the weather was cool and no rain. Everyone was in a rocking mood. Bobby got us started with a very energetic Truckin' then straight into a rip-roaring Spoonful. Bobby sang this too. They spun back into a truckin jam. Jimmy, Phil and Mickey are owning this and rolling up a full head of steam. They jam right into Hell in a Bucket (Bobby singing his third in a row and no sign of Joan yet). The fans were going nuts with these three. Little did we know what we had coming. I was lucky enough to have 11th row tonight (25th in Va beach but again a different audience) and you could look back to the top of the lawn and everybody was into it. They slid right into a kickin' Big Boss Man. I haven't heard this in forever and they all shined. Bobby and Joan were singing and the Keyboards were so hot. You don't understand, you've got to get a copy of this show. Their performance was dead-on all night on. The finished the jam and Winwood took his place at the keyboards and led a great Gimme Some Lovin. The fans were loving this...treating him like family. I think the boys wanted to give him this because he has been playing to an empty house the last two nights...especially Va beach. Phil and Joan sang a beautiful Alligator. They are playing these rarely played classics so well. You new and casual fans out there, brush up because they are playing to the diehards. Jimmy was hot in the Jam following Alligator then Phil owned the rest of the jam. He led the band through the rest of the jam (and most of the show for that part.) Knowing that he was next Phil led the boys straight to the waiting arms of Mickey. He was standing, looking at Phil, all but begging to take over when Phil released it to him. Now I've heard this Mickey toon was Bird of Paradise but someone that would know called it Self Defence. I don't know. Joan was grooving to it. She was out strutting agian, this time with a tamberine. She was so into the crowd. Throughout the show she was kicking balloons back out for circulation. They finished the set with Casey Jones - Joan singing. They all rocked and she sang it so well. Look at that set list and imagine the crowd into it with all that they have got. The energy was flowing like I rarely ever remember seeing. This was truely special. I couldn't even leave my seat at the break...i was so blown away.
second set coming...i'm being longwinded but the show was so good it deserves it.
it was lady peggy o terrapin
and i was sober (and writing it down)
i was trippin and managed to get that written down too
2nd set.
Greatest Story - bobby led and everyone played real tight. bobby was so hot he busted a string at the end of it. they fed into a crushing Dancin' in the Streets. (bobby and Joan sang) we already were. Phans were going nuts...this is a setlist and a show you dream of but never see. We were in it tonight and everyone knew they were experiencing something special. We haven't peaked yet, they are still taking us to knew heights. The boys break into a very tight jam with a strong Stella tease built in. Beware - they are telling you that its coming. They jamed right into one of the best Birdsongs ever. Phil sang and it was awesome. I had an aisle seat and the usher came over to me after it and asked what is was and that that was one of the best songs he has ever heard. (he gets hooked later) This was his first dead show. For those listening or buying the cd, there is a delay in singing by Phil at the end. a big smiley faced balloon came right up at him. Joan caught it and kicked it back like she had been doing all night. She screws up and just drills some guy in the 2nd row and it comes right back to her. she did it right the 2nd time. crowd roars...you'll hear it. I just want you to know why. Anyway, birdsong goes right into another very tight jam and then into Watchtower (bobby singing). Jimmy shined so well here (like he did in Va beach) and just put everyone on his back for this song and carried they through. Watchtower goes straight into a Drums that was to die for. mickey is really into it and stands up and is just crushing it. Mickey moves back to the rear drums and they are just feeding off of each other. Billy joins him (you'll hear him clapping his sticks as he goues back. Mickey leads and Billy gets really into it now. While Mickey is on the large three drums in the back, billy has two drumsticks in his right hand and one in the left and is just crushing it. they were so hot tonight...now this is what drums is suppose to be like...long and rockin. They lead right ino space that was tight. Mickey actually stayed out a while and was playing the instrument right behind Jimmy. Be lifted his left leg and was making this cool thumping. Toward the end of space the usher came over and said this is why the dead is greater than phish. he was blown away at the jazzynes of space and how everyone was so open and sharing in this experience.
i need some sleep. i'll update my review for the rest in the morning. check in and read it...it crushed.

Birdsong made my night. Throwing stones was awesome...US blues rocked...Jimmy Herring is doing the greatest job ever. Thank God Warren is taking a break from the dead. The security was non existent on the lawn. Everyone tokin peacefully, the lot sucked. Cops(pigs) were in swarms. Killed the lot vibe totally, yet i baught an amazing chicken wrap. Joan's voice was excellent tonight..shes doing a damn fine job. Casey Jones belonged to Joan...i loved it.
>> He lifted his left leg and was making this cool thumping.
sorry just thought this was funny
Thanks to J.C. for such an enthusiastic review. I am counting down the days until Red Rocks, and reviews like these are just getting me more and more pumped. It's ON!!!
J.C., thank you for your fabulous description of the event! personally, I'd take the setlist at Va. Beach over tonight's, but your review made me feel like I was there (and really wish that I was).
Sooooooo, what's the new Mickey tune like?
If the Mickey tune is "Self Defense" it's a song he played with Bembe Orisha last year.
Chorus is "It makes no difference if I'm wrong or if I'm right/I've got no self defense, I've got no will to fight"
jimmy was really on durring throwing stones...he really layed it down......by the way....im positive peggy o came out of terrapin then back into terrapin later....
Last nights show was rockin.....Peggy O definatly the highlight for me....Herring was just flat out amazing and that setlist from top to bottom was out of hand....By the Joan rocks...she was incredible last night...Not one negative thing to say....See you in Boston
I am all a-tingle
>>yet i baught an amazing chicken wrap.
lol
wow, all these opinions differ so much from my own. this was definately an all bobby show. the second set was a sleeper in my opinion. the dancin' was real slow. hell, the whole second set was slowwwwww. are they out of energy already? thank goodness for jimmy. i need my molo!
Couple quick notes before I start my day at work...still hazy from last night.
I have not seen Merriweather as crowded as it was last night in a VERY long time. Good to see considering I have heard from several reliable sources that this is the last summer for Merriweather Post. It was a nice send off for my final show at a place I have been going to since '89.
Second set was superb, in my opinion. The band is considerably tighter than they were in the fall. Still some miscues, but a lot of the segues that used to be choppy were actually quite good last night. Sounds strange to say, but Peggy-O was probably the highlight of the show for me. Whoever said Jerry's presence was in the air for that tune hit it right on...I can't describe the way I felt. Really special.
I should also note that the sound was great last night as well. I usually think that Merriweather sound is pretty murky but it seemed crystal clear. There also were no video screens, which I thought was a little unusual.
Looking forward to Camden...
2nd set continued
Went from Space to Terrapin (Lady with a fan). Phil was singing wand was leading the boys in a great version. During the jam, bobby grabed his acoustic and you knew they were going to break-up terrapin. Phil, still very much in control of the band, leads them into a very sweet Peggy-O. Not only wqas the playing smooth the vocals were right on. For the sake of me explaining I will call the diffent breaks in vocals verses (even though some are in the same verse). there are 9 of them. Follow the sequence when you listen to the show. they shared and blended beautifully. Phil sang the 1st verse, Bobby the 2nd, Joan (singing as Peggy) the 3rd. Back to Bobby for the 4th (when listening, you'll hear a quite feedback problem, bobby stepped too close to Jimmy). Booby sang the 5th, Phil the 6th, All three the 7th, Phil the 8th, and all three for the 9th. They did a great job. Trust me, you gotta hear it. They spun back into Terrapin (with Phil and Joan singing) that crushed. The crowd was so into this and the excitement was just flowing. Slid right into a stellar U.S. Blues with Bobby leading the way. Everybody is up dancing and having a good time. From Blues, Bobby again leads straight into Throwin' (i guess a message to the boys in DC that run the country). In the jam they teased a not fade away and then 3 or 4 minutes later broke right into it. the energy was flowing so well that you new the chant would talk you right through the break into the encore. It was loud and intense. Phil, seizing the opportunity used the Not Fade theme to as a segway into his donor rap. I know its a good thing, but Phil please wait until the end of the encore if the crowd is that into Not Fade. I remember many of shows where the crowd could keep that going for 10+ minutes. This crowd had that energy (VA beach did not but he did the rap at the end of the encore) and easily could have carried it all night. Encore - All (minus Joan) sang and played a killer Cosmic Charlie...Go on home your momma's calling you!
Twas a raging monster last night. I'm in love with Joan. She's such a saucy wench strutting it up good and getting the boys all hot and bothered. Merriweather was packed. I think this tour is going to pick up a lot of steam as word gets out. The Fall Tour can't even compare. Sound was great and Jimmy rocks. Can't wait for Camden...
thanks for the reviews!
So how is Mickey's new tune? From a setlist persepctive, this show looks pretty weak to me, compared to the first two nights, but as we all know it's more about how they play then what they play. But no matter how well it's played, I don't think I could ever get too excited about a show that included Bucket, Throwing Up -> NFA, US Blues and Truckin all in one night. In any case, how's the Mickey tune?
truckin, spoonful, alligator, big boss man, casey jones, dancin, bird song, watchtower, terrapin, peggy o
yeah, that is a weak setlist.
get real man
Hey Philjunky.....what show were you at last night.
Sleepy second set huh? I guess you didn't like the Watchtower or the Birdsong or the Peggy O or Terrapin ( which they always play there so you should just expect it) U. S. Blues or the Cosmic...Granted I have seen those songs alot but they were $$$$$$$$ And folks....the Dancin was not slow...I just don't understand
my only upsett from this show was that it, being my second show first was DC in the fall, they played 4 of the same songs. I geuss they try to do a little bit of a political kick because US Blues and Throwing Stones, amazing guitar work by Jimmy on this 1 last night, were both there. Cosmic Charlie, was fucking killer, but the encore at both shows. And All Along The Watchtower was jammed into at both.....Ill take Dylan any time dont get me wrong, but it would be more enjoyable if Bobby would sing the lyrics even close to correct. All in all this show blew away the fall one. I wish I was 18 and had a drivers license so I could fucking travel and see some more shows because these guys seem to playing great. fare thee well
Thats a fair description of the setlist being similiar to the one in the fall....But when they played RFK all those years the same shit happened...You are bound to see repeats...
What a zoo that place was,,thats the most people I have ever seen in that place,,,,,
Nice show,,,sound was good,,,band was together,,,Jimmy was outstanding and seems to be growing into his lead part,,,,Phil was his steady self,,Bobby was in outstanding form,,,,Billy and Mickey laid down an excellent drums,,,
Joan ROCKS,,,all you people dissing her need to get a life and shut the fk up,, ,,, great bluesy voice and great stage presence,,, her contribution on Peggy O was a thrill for me,,it was nice to hear that song again and done so darn well also...
They should continue next year to do a huge nationwide summer tour then save spring and fall for the Phil and Friends and Ratdog,,,,
Maybe more later,,,please people take it easy on Joan would ya,,,,
Itwas just the way it was supposed to be, blazing at times, mellow and sincere at others. Most of all, the dreams of Hunter and Garcia are being fulfiled and some new talent is having the opportunity to shine (how cool is that). I finally figured out that my personal opinion doesn't really matter. If I decide to go then I make the best of it. Somehow it feels like a dyfunctional family that I was born in to, sometimes I want to run and other times it offers warmth and security I so desperately need. Either way it's a part of me not worth denying.
Did anyone else catch the "BLOOD FOR OIL, DROPPING BOMBS TODAY" verse in throwing stones? Yeah PHIL was DROPPIN BOMBS alright!!!Peace
>>>Joan ROCKS,,,all you people dissing her need to get a life and shut the fk up
No shit.....i thought she sounded great....someone said she sounded like Donna? Joan can sing....shes not like Donna...peggy o was beautiful and i happy to hear it done so well..
Pozzy: I'm with you on the setlist, but that's OK - 'cuz I'm going to Saratoga.
Can you say The Other One & Playin In The Band?
Oh, one scary thing:
>>>>The boys break into a very tight jam with a strong Stella tease built in. Beware - they are telling you that its coming.
Where's the 'EEK!' icon when I need it?

i hope you get Playin->Dark Star->the other one->Dark Star->Playin reprise->baba jingo. lol.
Where have you been Foghorne? Me'n boy-o was just talkin about you and wondering. Good to hear ya had fun.
Wow! I give it an "A" to "A-." This was the best
Dead/Dead-related show I have seen in the last ten
years -- easily. Plenty of X factor all over the
place. Goes to prove once again that Garcia -- god luv
him -- was holding them back.
My main criticism is that Jimmy Herring doesn't't
really step up to the plate and belt his solos out of
the park. Whereas every Garcia solo was a mini-event
in itself, you don't get that from Jimmy.
Joan Osbourne is a GREAT addition to the band. She
exudes a luscious sexuality up there, dancing around
and shaking her tush and she wails more than Donna
ever dreamed.
See my CAPS below for song notes.

I can live with that.
Honestly, when I saw the setlist, I almost went out & danced in the streets......
Peggy-O's a nice little ditty, but post drums material?
I think not.
5th song of the 1st set, fine......
Oh jeez, how much more can they slow down bird song?
Joan Osborne is the story of this tour. When she was on stage -- whether singing lead or harmony, swaying and shaking her head, or grooving with the front rows -- the party went to another level. She took easily to the spotlight and channeled the dynamic between the band and the audience in a way that begins to recall Pigpen. I hope hell they can keep her, use her a lot, and grow with her.
The first set began rather tame. Truckin' was routine with some meaty power chords. Joan lit the fire in Big Boss Man. Gimmie Some Lovin with Winwood was superb and a payoff for coming. The Casey set closer built the tempo step-by-step to a healty intensity, as a good Casey should. I enjoyed it more than the frenzied ratcheting up the way PLQ does it, but I most prefer the shuffle-chugging way the Dead did that in the early 70s.
The second set was glorious, right from the start. From the arrangements and song selections, it was a real 80s-style show. (As opposed to PLQs 60s-70s vibe). Greatest Story and Dancin' rocked hard. Birdsong came from another planet, and Peggy-O was sublimely beautiful with Joan's harmonies. It fit in its spot in the set list -- recalling the folk strains of Lady with a Fan and setting the stage for the rave-up rocking that followed.
Jimmy's guitar lead in Throwing Stones seemed, notably for the first time that night -- a direct run of Garcia licks in the manner of a tribute. For most of the night, it was the powerful rhythm section that dominated musically. Loved the Cosmic Charlie encore -- I can't get enough of that tune.
The sound system was a little muddy -- worse than last year's PLQ setup, at least from my seat near the back of the pavilion. The lights were great, with a different screen setup from the late GD/TOO summer ones.
It was nice to see all the hard work Phil and Bobby have put into the last eight years lead to this lineup and to see the crowds come out.
My heart is still with PLQ (and, to a lesser extent, Ratdog) with their more intimate shows, new songs and fresh arrangements. But on a pleasant summer evening at a shed in the woods with a kind crowd, the Dead put on a damn fine concert. I ordered the CD.
Hey J.C. McKnight, great notes, dude!!
Full Terrapin-At a Siding/Flyer? Please mention this in reviews.
Thanks-it is still a big deal for me.
So...ummm...how's the new Mickey Tune? Did anyone catch Winwood opening? How was that?
I had a great time and yeah Merriweather was packed. I had seen it more crowded only once before (Pearl Jam 96).
To be honest the two songs I was most excited about hearing were kind of a letdown. Alligator should have blown me away but it sounded muddy and the groove seemed kinda lost. And I thought Dancin' was played too slow. I know many may disagree. Peggy-O was awesome and sandwiched in Terrapin made it even sweeter. The Birdsong was nice. It was definitely a Bobby night. Jimmy played great again. Joan was not as active singing lead on only one song and only being on stage maybe half the time.
Maybe I got used to the sound at Bonnaroo, but the sound wasn't very good. Maybe it was where I was sitting and maybe I should have moved. I thought they were better at Bonnaroo, but last night was a great show. Just some minor complaints.
>>>Did anyone catch Winwood opening? How was that?
I love Traffic and this was very Traffic...it was great....opened with Empty Pages, closed Low Spark Of High Heeled. I didnt know the inbetween songs, from the new album perhaps? If it was I will be purchasing it. Sounds like Traffic. Steve really knows how to jam. One song Bobby and Joan came out and Joan sang the whole song...it was great......fare thee well
~>PLEASE SHOW STEVE WINDWOOD LOVE, HE DESERVES<~
Great show - who'd of thunk that Peggy-O would be a 2nd set highlight (one of several)? Anyone else notice how the "trading off" of verses was actually "in character", i.e. Phil was the narrator, Bob the Captain, and Joan was Peggy-O.
Awesome....
(((((((DRUMS))))))))
excellent show, for someone who was 'out there' the entire show this show had it all. excellent way to get the gig rockin w/ truckin...
coulda done without joan on big boss man (she made it a bit 'sexy' whereas i like the original pig attitude a lot more.) 2nd set was more on for me. the slowest terrapin i ever heard, and then to slip in a phat peggy o in the middle blew me away>>joan was a big hit here in my book!! us blues got the place out of control. by far the best show i've seen since alpine valley last summer. the sound was dialed in by the time they got 1/2 way through truckin>>>props to the folks runnin the boards last night<<< excellent time and the pigs were not a big factor either. met many new friends and danced my ass off, can't wait till camden....................
Can't stop the train, you got to let it roll on......................
My 2 cents. A good show, so glad the rain stopped. 1st set highlights Truckin', Big Boss, Gimme Some w/Steve. Alligator was fun, Mickey's song got going about half way through and Casey was fine. 2nd set, Greatest Story and Dancin' were great, I agree with the posters that the Birdsong was SLLLOOOOOWWWWW, but nice vocals. Bob derails Watchtower with his chopped up vocals, Jimmy tries to save it with blazing guitar. Peggy-o in the Terrapin (no siding/flyer)was sweet, and the rest was good.
Joan sounds great and adds nice stage energy. Bob needs a teleprompter. Jimmy's great and the rythym section is solid as always. Keyboardists trading off some, both not playing on all tunes.
Had a great 8th row middle seat. Visuals fabulous, but the sound was much better on the lawn in the taper section. Kudos to whoever put together the outdoor PA, so check it out.
So, pretty good, not bad, can't complain. Goodies to come, obviously. Everyone have fun and BE SAFE!!
Have to side more with philjunky and his observations. . . Lots of highlights throughtout the night though. Things never really flowed in the first set. Spoonful was fun sandwiched in Truckin', Alligator was kind of an after thought and Casey Jones was fun in a crowd pleasing sort of way (like junk food you know, hey it tastes good but . . .)
I kept high expectations for the 2nd set though and couldn't wait for the sun to go down and the music to get a bit more intense. Definite improvement over 1st set, Greatest Story and finally some open ended jamming with Birdsong (that I was happy didn't just flutter away as is often the case). Watchtower was hot just like at MCI and drums was definitely a real highlight.
Hoped for the best after drums but the inevitable Terrapin was a personal disappointment cause i knew they'd be doing their U.S. Blues, Throwing Stones repeats too, probably. Beautiful Peggy-O made the Terrapin more enjoyable for me and the Cosmic Charlie was surely a nice send off.
Hoping for a bit more in Camden, but all in all a good night and I can see where the Glowing A+++ reviews are coming from as the crowd was enthusiastic all night, happy to get enough songs to sing along to . . .
OMG, it hurts reading this instead of living it!
Questions:
In the set list pic, Jimmy is back to playing his sunburst Fender Strat. Is that really what he's playing, or has he switched to the Paul Reed Smith (PRS)?
Everyone's saying "Joan sang lead," but isn't it more harmonies than lead? It seems these are songs that don't really have a single lead voice...
After hearing the rehearsal recording, and after reading these reviews, I'm pulling for a Peggy-O on Letterman tonight! The Dead is a new band, so let's show the world!
August, you said the coolest thing up there about fulfilling dreams and shining new talent. That's what this is to me. The music is alive, and it's growing, and it's constantly changing. August, you rock for noticing…
I also get a HUGE kick out of all of the "looks like a boring, do-over set list to me," all from people who weren't there, even after all who were there are saying "greatest show in ten years!!!" Or better yet, the usher story. Just so y'all know, I *love* reading the set lists, too, but that's not why I go to the shows. I love the music.
And I LOVE this BAND!!!
Merriweather was a nice show..
Very typical transition show after a sweet opening night (atleast setlist wise, I didnt go
to VA beach)..
Went in very critical, came out very happy..
Like any show it had its low moments..Yes the Grateful Dead would have low moments ..Unless your still under some form of delusion that they didnt.
As far as the Dead..Terrapin was a little off..
Casey Jones, US Blues too..
But again its expected..
The jams were very well played..Bob laying nice chords..Jimmy is blending in nicely..
Sweet jam in Bird song..Those nice jazz lines flowing ..
I like the change in arrangements of some of the songs..Alligator most notabley..It thru me but I settled into it nicely..
Peggy O gave me the friendly tingling chills..
Man I miss Jerry.
I was reminded a show is what you make of it..
You can go in and either have fun or be over critical and leave let down..
Its all about fun..I had fun..Its not the setlist I would have liked..But all in all what was played was played fine..
I came out feeling the Spac is going to kick ass.
For me thats a good sign.Usually that was an old vibe I used to get after a just ok GD show played well, knowing the next show would blow the roof off.
Ohh before I forget..
Joan..All I can say is welcome to the band..
The woman is awesome..Great pipes..Honest & fun vibe..And some where between sassy and cute as hell on stage..
Good fun all in all..Cant wait for tomorrow myself.
Leave the arm chair QBing at home and go out and have fun..
Jerrys not there, but it has moments when his spirit pokes out..
Sounds like a great night had by all!! ( Well, most ) I'm glad I must have skipped over the reviews with negative comments, cause I never read any.....(LOL)!! I'm with Fog on that anyway; "If you don't have anything nice to say then skip it"! Not that I'm into sensorship or expressing your views so skip the lectures.......I'm just tired of negativism!
I'm sure the show rocked......and you know all the "boys still got it"! Can't believe someone would say glad that Warren wasn't there, that guy absolutely rocks, and all he could do is add to this group, but they is what they is.......so enjoy it while we got it, and hopefully that will still be for years to come....
>>>Goes to prove once again that Garcia -- god luv him -- was holding them back.<<<
uhh...I dont understand that.....Im not saying its wrong or right but holding them back? how so?
I've been going to shows since 78', and I'd have to rank this one as top shelf, but not great. The highlights were Peggy-O (very nice interplay between Phil, Bobby, and Joan), Gimme Some Lovin (Winwwod had everybody rockin), Casey Jones (Joan did a much better job than on Valentines Day), Cosmic Charlie (super slick and well rehearsed), and believe it or not U.S. Blues (far from a useless blues last night). But, the real major attraction of the night was the jamming between the 2nd set tunes- I'm including drums here- There were some exceptionally tight moments that showed exactly what happens when people play together for close to 40 years.
As for the lowpoints, I'd have to say the Mickey tune was the bottom for me (I don't know if this was "self defense" - the refrain had something to do with Angels and Paradise- this tune makes "Only the Strange Remain" seem like a classic). The Big Boss Man could have been better, and so could Phil's singing during an otherwise great Birdsong. The real downer of the show was the sound from anywhere but dead center. I was left center and about halfway back, and we had a pretty horrible mix (especially for the 1st set). When I moved to the middle and up a bit, the sound was MUCH better. Can't wait to hear the discs of this one.
Wow, great reviews, looking forward to
the next few weekends. Be nice to hear
the auds of these shows soon. Seems like
a regular joan-love-in going on here. That
is really, really positive. So this ain't
yoru grandfather's dead then? ;-)

"After hearing the rehearsal recording, and after reading these reviews, I'm pulling for a Peggy-O on Letterman tonight! The Dead is a new band, so let's show the world!"
Not sure if you were loking for last night's version but Joan won't be on Letterman tonight. She is in NH doing a benefit gig.
I'm glad I came in here and read J.C.'s review. Made me get chills and feel sad that I wasn't there to enjoy it.
what a great show!! awesome seats (thanks Brad!), totally fun pre-show party (again, thanks Brad!) met a bunch of zoners ~ so nice to have a face to put to name ~ danced my ass off!! lol!!
Have you noticed that a number of the pro-Joan comments have focused on her sex appeal? Where's the logic in that? "She must be a good singer because she gives me an erection." Not everyone was like that, and I'm not saying if she's good or not...though the harmonies without Joan at the end of Cosmic Charlie were by far the sweetest of the night to my ears.
There was a Truckin type jam towards the end of Spoonful, but I wouldn't describe it as "Truckin > Spoonful > Truckin".
Gimme Some Lovin' was great-- a blend of the Grateful Dead version and the original Winwood style. I've been hoping for Phil to do this for years, I wonder if this is the first one since, well I don't know, since Brent died perhaps?
Have fun everyone--
Oops -- didn't know Joan wasn't with the Dead tonight. In light of that, . . . . man, what are they gonna sing? (It's kinda fun wondering.)
I am really enjoying reading these reviews. Thanks, y'all! Joy all around...
>Danced my ass off...
Maybe you better find your butt at SPAC. Did it rain?
"so this ain't your grandfather's Dead then..."
Timdog, that is one great statement! I consider myself 3rd generation Dead....(got interested in '82....first show '83)....
missed Pig (and Tom, brief as that might have been)
missed Keith and Donna
came in under the powerful keys of Brent
many were saying, I just ain't like it used to be when Pigpen was around...etc., etc. I was envious because I missed Pigpen.... and I was envious that I missed the glorious spring 77 run...etc.
Got some great stuff, esp. 83-89!
I am SURE that this is not your grandfather's Dead, but sure wish I could have been there the last couple of nights to see "what up?" for myself.
Will see Atlanta... patiently waiting.

>>Have you noticed that a number of the pro-Joan comments have focused on her sex appeal? Where's the logic in that?>>
She sang wonderfully AND she had terrific sex appeal. Her stage presence was energizing. The rest of the band simply has to play off that and be energized too. Her just standing there dancing brought the music higher. And it was magical when she kicked the giant ball off stage during a spacy jam. But she also hard the leads, harmonies, and fills that added a new dimension to the band. I keep mentioning Pigpen. A dynamic front person can add a lot.
Two comments from the group I was in. A male said "do you think there's any adult male watching this show right now who is not absolutely in love with her."
And a woman said, "Fifty percent of all little girls want to grow up to be princesses. Another 50 percent want to be models. But there's a tiny, tiny sliver that want to grow up and sing with the Grateful Dead."
That was Joan. Enjoy.
What's the matter with sex appeal??
The woman is talented, has a great vibe and happens to be attractive..Sounds as if we have jealous Bob fans..Dont worry the dukes will be out shortly..
"And a woman said, 'Fifty percent of all little girls want to grow up to be princesses. Another 50 percent want to be models. But there's a tiny, tiny sliver that want to grow up and sing with the Grateful Dead.'"
OMG, that's funny! Did Joan say that?
You know, I could never get my girlfriend to go to any Dead-related show, regardless of which band it is. But today she sat with me to listen to the rehearsal tapes 'cause she wanted to know what it was like with Joan. She's never shown an interest before.
Now I'm beginning to wonder, will I actually get to bring my girlfriend to a Dead show???
Man, talking about bringing something new to the band!
6/18/03 was my first show ever and it was really sweet, made me even more of a Deadhead. watchtower was really nice, casey jones was great, had to leave as not fade away faded away, just heard strains of Cosmic Charlie, my favorite Dead song, but it sounded good. anyone know where to get a stream of this or download or something? if not ill just buy it from dead.net. thanks...
(((((((((((THANKS PEOPLE)))))))))
sigh from the west coast
That show is definitely worth listening to again! Two keyboards, two drummers, two guitars, and PHIL. It's too much to hear at once.
If they do Big Boss Man again, be ready to sing the "sure get stoned at night" line. Not many in the crowd were ready when Bob and Joan suddenly stopped singing and pointed at the audience to "take it". You've got to be on your toes. This is serious business and there are no second chances. We're working without a net here.
I'm so psyched--
for Phil and Friends!
Don't forget THE Dead on Letterman, Thursday!
Footnote: Hey, I'm all for sex appeal, but I know for me it can work in different ways. Sometimes a very talented singer seems sexier because she's so talented, and sometimes a really sexy singer seems like a better singer than she really is. I'll have to listen to the cd's to be sure which it is...
There's nothing wrong with bringing Joan's sex appeal into it. Not only can she sing, but she also brings this surreal sexuality to the stage. She's totally working the stage while the guys are standing around like they have been for the last 35 years or so, and you know what? it works. It has a weirdly cool aura to it, and I'm pleased to see that she isn't intimidated by the scene. Also, she can more than deliver the goods with her vocals. And one more thing- Joan isn't your size 6 pop diva that is out there shaking the mass media concept of what is sexy. She's a full-blown woman with an innate sexuality that is going to come through whether she tries or not. I give her and the band a 10 for what is going on here.
Sorry about the bogus Joan Osborne info regarding Letterman last night. The local paper had her in NH.
Nice first post...bad information.
Carlin my sentiments exactly on your post. This band is fun these days and if you go and just have fun your gonna have the time of your life. Joan is awesome and easy on the eyes. I heard some songs I wasn't psyched about but those songs don't last forever and overall the band rocked. I defintely heard some 77ish playing going on at points and that makes me smile.
Beer lines and prices sucked, good riddance Merriweather, You are a pretty venue but old and Antiquated.
Wally, nice review, that's what my attitude will be, even in the rain tomorrow! you gonna be in hartford? and I'm sure you'll be in Holmdel, yes? all-day bbq on wed
I think its cool that they have a dynamic front persona. It used to be that Jerry was the focus, with his heavy vibe. If he so much as took two steps forward, it was powerful. Before that was Pig. I think its cool to have some visual appeal. Ya know what's really cool--know one has suggested that her prancing and dancing is cheesey, even the folks who criticize her voice.
Really looking forward to seeing this band.
Toward the end of the first set, I see an almost virtual stop from all the members. They are all turned around looking at Mickey, Uh Oh! He's creeping up on his stool toward his mike...
Great time for a break, the beer and bathroom lines I had never seen so long.
I thought the level of playing overall was a little subpar then compared to the fall. When they allow a little spacing of instruments(more Jimmy solo) you can make out the sounds a little clearer. Most of the time they are all going out on all cylinders. I know that is what it is supposed to be all about. I just wish I could hear each player seperately from time to time. But I thought they were a little off at the beginning of Fall tour also and they improved with more time together. Here's to a real good time at Hartford, PNC, and Camden.
And Joan, what stage presence! I enjoyed her vocals and moves (I was glued into her most of the time) all night long.
Okay, I've got to be a little sarcastic here, so if you can't take a little good natured sarcasm, skip the rest...
but, brothers, you've got to stop thinking with your penises:
"I enjoyed her vocals and moves (I was glued into her most of the time) all night long."
How could that be when she wasn't on stage all night long (only when she was going to sing)?
"Joan isn't your size 6 pop diva that is out there shaking the mass media concept of what is sexy."
Yes, as a size 8, she's really pushing the envelope there.
"It used to be that Jerry was the focus, with his heavy vibe."
Jerry may have been heavy, but his vibe was anything but. Personally, I don't see how you can compare her to Jerry or Pig. Give her 5 or ten or thirty years, and then get back to me...
Have you had enough, or do you want some more?!
WE WANT PHIL...
...AND FRIENDS!
HAVE FUN!
"Sorry about the bogus Joan Osborne info regarding Letterman last night. The local paper had her in NH."
Hey Andrew, your info was half right. Joan played in Concord, NH last night after taping the Letterman show. Great time. She sang many old blues and soul standards, and even two Dylan tunes.
Great reviews, everybody. Thanks. Lookin' forward to Hartford and Great Woods...
Note to the person with the guitar question: Jimmy was playing the blue PRS guitar.
Hey Monkeypox- I've got news for you- shes a straight up 12- you need to re-check your size charts
besides meeting a bunch of wonderful zoner folk, this was the highlight for me...

This will be my only post @ the post.
The show was full of energy all the way through. I met one of the 'roamers' and asked if the hat came with the CD they were not to chummy.
Opening with a stellar Truckin'....what a long strange trip it's going to be.
Lot sucked, but got a Loge for face. Didn't want to miss another opener again, like the last St Stephen in VA. (TOO) excelLent seats by the way! 'dead' center 15 to 20 rows
I wound up ordering the cd from the family, ahh?!
The family at the shows has changed.
That was the best 'dead that I have seen alive. and the best sound and energy yet, atleast from what I have heard/scene/seen/head
Glad to see so many agree with my feeling that this show rocked!
If anyone still reads in here, I'll post my play-by-play...
fyi,
Howard County Police only arrested 34 Heads. It must have been a slow night for them. They usualy get twice that many people at a concert.
Be safe

where is my boot?
Honestly, I LOVE the boys. But, this show was NOT good. The jamming simply seems to go NOWHERE! It is as if everyone, is jamming by themselves and not really feeding off of one another, which is quite suprising. The whole Terrapin was one of the worst I've EVER heard. I did however, think Joan added a really nice touch to the overall sound. Phil is on, as is Bobby and while I like Herring, I think that is style is simply all over the plave and DOESN't take the boys into any really unique and special places. Overall, unforuntatly, I would have to give it a thumbs down. I'm sad now.
this was the best show i have ever been to. the energy was there all day and night. the set list was amazing! dancing in the streets was so rocking i couldnt stand still!! Joan was on point with all the words and her voice is out of this world. def. a good combo over the dead's music. She looked like she was having a blast. all in all one hell of a show. THE BOYS ARE BACK!!! i def. felt jerry was there the whole time lookin over everybody. i cant wait to see the boys again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This post is a little old now but I'll still comment.
For one... people are whining about the slow birdsong. This band is not about the high energy, they present a feeling and mood through lyrics and sound. The bird song was one of the greatest songs ive ever seen live I thought at the time (psylociben have anything to do with that?) I love Phil and his voice sounded great that night. The way they approach Bird Song now is very cool... they almost make you beg for the "snow and rain" in the second verse. Listening to the song again soberly I still get the same cerebral feeling.
First set, it was just okay. Nothing really fancy, more of a "warm up". Alligator was cool, I like Joans vocals for it. PS. I was skepical of what Joan's role will be but I like her.
Second set... i enjoyed Greatest story > Dancin. (then came bird song). Watchtower's peak was Herrings guitar work
Drums started out fast and grooving. The jam morphed into some magnificent force of tribal energy. The drums moved between intricate delicate sounds into absolutely powerful energy. Space was ..... spacey. i liked it. The feeling of "bobbied out" was long gone and the boys were groovin. Terrapin was a nice treat, but the Peggy O is what made it special. Throwing stones had NFA teases throughout, I enjoyed it a lot. Though listening to NFA is not always my favorite, being in the crowd and experiencing it is another story. There was a lot of feeling in the crowd that night, everyone sang and clapped until they came back out to encore.
When they came back out and started playing Cosmic Charlie i almost had an anuerysm!!! Before I went to the show, I didnt have much hopes except for Cosmic to be the encore and my wish came true. I may have floated back to the car after that.
I read other reviews where they felt the presence of Jerry at this show.. and I did too. This show give me feelings of great joy and simultaneously a yearning for Jerry (mostly during bird song).
I think Jimmy Herring is doing a fine job in the band, it is really helping improve his playing in my opinion, forcing him to rethink his approach. Phil and friends is a much more liberating for him because it allows him to play with his fiersome fire.
I didnt see any Dead shows last fall but I heard them and was un-impressed. This show- I was not unimpressed. They have cleaned up a lot of slopiness and lost the timidness that I sensed last tour. I came very timidly thinking how much P&F would blow this band out of the water but I was put in my place. IT IS DIFFERENT.
Overall, i really had a great time and enjoyed the music. This is going to be one crazy tour.
this is the show of tourPERIOD
gr8t show
