These shows will rock. You know Phil is excited to be in a 5 piece unit again. After conduting and orchestrating the Dead Orchestra, He will be jacked up for the tighter, leaner and more agile unit that is PLQ. Have fun everybody!

I can feel the Leshtricity all the way here in Golden Bay, New Zealand - God Bless the "Q" - They're the real thing - aint no fuckin doubt about it...I like seeing jam after ever song and freaking out just visioning Mount Saint Molo errupting on drums, Barroco bouncing on the keys, Haynes and Herring getting dirty scrapping each other on the guitars and Captain Phil just laying it on thick...remember to leave your name on the other side cause this can never be reproduced!!!
Cheers to the Universal Vibration...

Huge applause...Phil welcomes back "you freaks"! Jam>Scarlet opener, a nod to the Dead. Molo did this crazy little burst of drumming before the vocals. The guy looked so psyched to be playing. He's basically been off for a year, waiting for this. Next up....Blue Sky, a nod to the ABB. The Blue Sky was beautiful....and Warren, playing with the ABB all summer, gets to play it now, with the Q! Soulshine, a nod to Warren. Phil is a genius with these setlists....the ABB and the Dead and the Mule/Warren merge at the Q. Crazy Fingers....Rob's turn to sing, and he sounded great. Big Bombs in the Wheel. Built to Last was nice, and a rocking Cumberland.

Mason's to open set 2 rocked hard. But the highlight of the show was the Watchtower. The best 'tower I've ever seen played by anyone....Warren playing Jimi's riffs note for note at the intro and the first break, before going into his own thing. It was just sick. Scrubbing at the end, and belting out the lyrics. The Real Thing was very powerful, with Phil again dropping major bombs. Nothing like Warren on the out-jam of UBC. Tater was awesome, and the Help....damn, they just nailed it. GDTRFB>Angel Band to close. SWEET!

The Band was very LOUD. Phil looked like he had the same rig he had at Shoreline.....in the Warfield! The two monster cabinets (at least 4 18" speakers), with a couple of 12" or 15" speakers on top for good measure. He hit some notes that just rattled the whole building. I've never seen the Q this loud....but very well balanced and clear. Volume reminded me of the ABB circa 1994/1995. My ears are ringing......Anyway, you would never know they hadn't played for a year.......Can't wait for tomorrow!

Awesome! When Phil started singing Scarlet, it was like coming home. Phil vocals were great, as were everone elses, but to hear Phil's rich soulfull voice sing Scarlet instead of Bobby's thin whiny voice that speaks the notes instead of singing them - it was heavenly. The whole show was awesome. I started fading at the start of Ne Potoato - had a fuck of a toothache and I think I took too much ibuprofen and oragel and these herbal painkillers. Between that and the heat on the floor, I started to feel dizzy so I went and sat inthe hallway. Heard the show perfectly from there, nodded out a few times (it was 2 AM according to my body and I was up at 4:30 AM) but several kind people woke me up and asked if I was alright, they said I looked a little pale. Feelingmuch better now, but I'm going to catch a coupleof more zzzzz's. My tooth feels fine now, hopefully it stays that way. Weather for today in SF 62 degrees high and cloudy. Sunny and 76 in San Jose - 45 miles away. Might fo hang out there today and soak up the sun.

See all the parts of the setlist that say "jam"?
I really wish I knew a way to convey to all of you who weren't there how ripped up insane magical lunacy inducing mayhem that shit was last night!!!!!!!! it was definitely the space between the tunes that moved me - truly experimental with flops and soaring love and sick musicianship.

The trading of licks between guitars on Scarlet and Watchtower were off the hook - Warren is really loosening his style and the fireworks between he and Herring were solid. The Slipknot was sick - on and on, can't wait til tonite - Phil is determined to shake the foundation of the old Warfield with his Zeus-like thunder broom!!! Come if you can!!!

Please, PLEASE PLEASE say 'The Q' EVERY time you mention Phil Lesh and Friends.

It sounds so cool.

Did anyone notice - I'm a little rusty at who sings what & lyrics aren't my bag anyhow - but it seems Warren sang very little & very little GD songs?

I mentioned in the Chat room before the setlist was in last night that I was wondering how much Warren remembered after a year & when & if he could've rehearsed anything.
I was wishfully thinking he might have even forgotten Stella's lyrics, to which several folks said "he has the sheet music right in front of him"

I can see it now...

"It all rolls into continued on page two"

However, looking at the setlist, it appears maybe Warren indeed needs to do some studying.

Thoughts?

Woah -- what on EARTH is there to say? This show was sick!!! This is my favorite band ever.

Be sure to read this post: I have a neat story to tell, but I’ll save it for last.

The set list was perfect. Phil's line on Crazy Fingers is off the hook. Rob got to sing. BOMBS AWAY! Phil dropped more bombs than ever. And . . "WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! IT'S SO FRIGGIN LOUD!!!" Seriously, guys, it was LOUD. (Not too loud, but this was definitely a rock show).

I noticed that they guys played more featured solos than usual, and it was a nice change.

Afterwards, my buddies and I were sitting at Mel's Diner, and in walked Jimmy and Warren. The restaurant broke into applause as they walked in. They smiled, waved, and sat down at the table RIGHT NEXT TO US. (Okay, beside us, and one behind, but my pony tail could have hit Jimmy's). Once they were down, everyone completely left them alone. Very good manners, San Francisco.

As we left Mel's, I tried to sneak out unnoticed, but . . . come on. How can a 6'8" 245 pound loopy guy sneak past his heroes? They were watching us walk by, so finally we gave in and told them “thanks,” that we'd see them tomorrow, and, oh, by the way, "Watchtower rocked!"

I remembered that someone wanted anyone who could to request Cortez, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. It would have invaded their privacy too much.

What a night. WHAT A NIGHT!!!!

It's good to be back.

"The Q, you Freaks!" LOL....

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Dead (2thecore) on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 02:08 pm: Edit Post

Bucky,
your message is mixed - you hope he forgot the lyrics seems to imply you'd rather not hear him sing. On the other hand, you feel he needs to study - so that he can sing??

I'd take his soulful voice and stellar slide playing on any tune anytime! But I would like some clarity on what you...want?

"Welcome back, Phreaks."

Welcome back, yourself, big guy.

The only word I can come up with is WOW!!!! Real original.

To think I actually entertained a thought that they might be a little rusty after not playing together for a year. They certainly dispensed with that notion in about 3 notes.

I think that was the most soulful Soulshine I've heard in my life.

Cumberland...5 people soloing at once and making perfect sense.

Watchtower...words fail.

can't wait till 8!!!

Greg, yeah, MRS B can hook up that 365 thing tonight & I'll listen during chat (insomnia does have it's attvantages at times & after last night & today's ensuing nap, I'm sure to be up tonight during showtime). I listened to Alpine & never bothered again until today as it didn't sound that good. Maybe the laptop would be better.

>>>>>>Bucky,
your message is mixed - you hope he forgot the lyrics seems to imply you'd rather not hear him sing. On the other hand, you feel he needs to study - so that he can sing??

No, I was just joking because I hate Stella.

Warren can & will sing.

I just was thinking that with his schedule that he prolly wouldn't have that much prep time & I think that was borne out by the setlist (lack of songs he sang) last night.

Thankfully, playing isn't effected as much. :-)

listening to live365.com right now. kinda puts to rest the whole argument heard from dead tour this summer..."oh, you can't tell how good a show is from the tapes". i wasn't at the show last night, but this stream has me dancing around my office.

No comment, yet. My body and mind fail to come up with much except that too much fun is certainly magical.

First reaction...what the fuck did the Dead do this summer, besides waste our time by not using Jimmy and Rob. Rob was just awesome, awesome, awesome. Jimmy is my hero, Warren was supercool, and Molo rocks my world every single show I hear.

So glad the stream is up for you all. I had this moment of trepidation before the show. What a waste of trepidation. All that we remember and more, because its been valued and missed.

Rob, the other sounds I heard, aside for the Tomorrow Never Knows teased that teased again, was the Stella leads all night.

The HSF was as good as it gets...The Real Thing was fucking perfect, stellar, powerful, and once again, they played a setlist for my life as it is.

That Unbroken needs to be playing right around 3:30 today. I owe Fred a gift.

there was a nice big Stella tease somewhere in the 1st set, maybe in thatjam before Blue Sky, but definately in one of those jams...

as for Warren needing to study, he is always studying, he was reading the lyrics for Built to Last.

heres the breakdown on who sang:

The Warfield, Ca 9/25/03

Set 1:
Scarlet Begonias - Phil
Blue Sky - all 3
Soulshine - Warren
Crazy Fingers - Rob
The Wheel - all 3
Built To Last - Warren
Cumberland Blues - all 3

Set 2:
Mason's Children - all 3
All Along The Watchtower - Warren
New Potato Caboose - Phil
The Real Thing - Warren
Unbroken Chain - Phil
Help On The Way - Rob
Franklin's Tower - Phil/Rob

Goin Down The Road Feeling Bad - all 3
Angel Band - Warren on the 1st verse then all 3 on the chorus

btw the Angel Band was the complete version, with the verse and chorus.. they only used to do just the chorus part.

I agree with the Rob thing.. I have no idea why they didn't let him sing.. I dunno

Wow, ya'll back East are in for some MONSTER shows, to say the least!!!!

Hey Wiz, thank you once again for the "Free" ticket, yes I did get on the floor both sets, although it didn't seem quite so "Free" when I ran into Zippy. I was talking to this beautiful girl from Maui, as I was sitting on the trash can in front of the box office, Zippy comes up and says, you been talking shit about me on the zone, I say absolutely, but only because it got me a "Free" ticket, besides it was all true. All the time I'm thinking, this is not the time to be discussing this Zippy, I'm busy, but then again, that's what I love about him.

My favorite songs of the evening were "Soulshine" and "The Real Thing", Warren just does something to me, despite my cynicism.

The 21 Club was too cool as usual. I haven't been there since the Valentines show, but when I walked in, it was like I never left. I met JA there, but no one else, where was everybody after the show?, not that it mattered, I had fun talking to Frank and all the regulars.

I'll be back tonight for sure

Anybody got an extra floor?

Killer show, pholks.

Got to the city a bit late and got turned around. Missed the meet up at 21 Club.
Wandered the line and drank a couple beers looking for a dude in a red velvet suit. Round about 7:15, I gave away my extra and got in line. For some reason, I left the line and walked to the front where I met, finally, Tom H. He was parked on the trash can rapping with JustAnother. Great guys. Tom is most definitely hero material.

We're lucky to have him in the Zone.

Wizard and Liberty came by, and Zippy wandered around too.

Didnt see any other Zoners, but one guy did come by mumbling "Golden Seal for your extra."

Had a beer with Wiz, Tom, and JA and then headed in. My normal spot next to the Phil side (as oppossed to the Jerry side) bar on the drink level.

Opening jam had hints of Dark Star before moving into Scarlet. Very Solid opening. Tight from the get go. Blue Sky soared as usual.
The first nice suprise was Soulshine. The call and response by Jimmy and Warren at the end was infuckingcredible. These two were locked in like a 4 handed monster. Just beautiful. Crazy Fingers>Wheel was picture perfect with Phil thumping hard on the former. Built to Last was a Q first for me and solid. Cumberland just plain smoked. As rik said, 5 guys soloing at once. And soloing well.

Sound was excellent where I was at, with Phil/Rob high in the mix. Perfect.

Just before the 2nd, The band huddles behind Warren's rack. Molo fire up a joint and passes it to Rob. They take their places and Molo finishes off the doob with one massive blast of smoke above his kit. Priceless.

2nd set may have been the best post-GD set Ive seen.

Tight, driving Mason's Children gave way to a slowed down jam from which Watchtower emerged. Warren cum Jimmy was jaw dropping. Again Phil, LOUD IN THE MIX, drove the train along. I daresay this Watchtower matches up with any ever played. Warren scrubbing at the end, Jimmy hitting impossible notes, Molo moving at warp speed.
The Real Thing was perfect. Extremely powerful. For those of us who actually enjoyed the Jerry ballads, this took up the slack. Almost Morning Dew intensity during the bridge.
UBC was UBC. A perfect vehicle for this band. More fantastic Herring work.
Help was fucking perfect. Powerful and again tight as can be. A year you say? Sounded like these guys had been playing non stop for months. Slipknot was a little short and interrupted for me as a girl near by lost it and a couple of us had to get RockMed. Luckily, my location made that pretty easy. Franklins was jumping with an excellent Barracco solo during the first break and great Warren during the 2nd (3rd?).
Fantastic encores with the letter perfect harmonies on Angel Band.

I was blown away people. Just a fanfuckingtastic show. Bucky may be right. Night in and night out, this band just may provide more thrills than the Grateful Dead in their last 10 years. Now Id take one show with Garcia over a lifetime of the Q, but facts is facts. These guys fucking rock.

Sell your house. Sell your wife. Do ANYTHING to get to these shows.
Everybody, drop what you are doing right now and go!!!!

And to think I actually considered missing these for a trip to Lake Mead.

This shit is serious.

There's so much, too much to say. I won't rank on The Dead :-) - only say that THIS WAS the SHIZZLE. I kept thinking of the 75 Great American Music Hall....after a long hiatus, the band comes back. HSF, GDTRFB, Crazy Fingers....the Scarlet>>Blue Sky was a brilliant symbolic fusion...I kept wondering what TABA tune would be played...and the Real Thing - HOLY MOTHAH! The kind you remember when they are gone -- NO DOUBT!!!! Mason's KAPOW KAPOW!!! And once again I love this band bc I LOVE PHIL and they play the Phil things with such precision....POTATO was THE BEST EVER - NAILED EVERY NOTE!!! UBC....divine!! I was in the equiv of 5th row dead center and I let the Blue Light Rain crush me as Phil corrected his lyric "flub" from Jones....

Welcome back Phil and Friends
BURY THE DEAD INDEED
(that Built to Last was some statement)

too much to say....too in it to talk...but Mermaid, Scarlet, Lites, you were much in my heart as it all went down.....

Here's a hot tip for something "Free" to do on Saturday afternoon before the "Q". Cal is playing USC at 3:30 in Berkeley. Watching a Cal football game from Tightwad Hill is one of the magical things in the universe IMHO. The view of the whole San Francisco skyline, the sun setting behind the golden gate bridge, the spectacle of big time college football, combined with a bunch of hard core Cal fans, like me, drinking, smoking and doing whatever seems most inappropriate, is something everyone should see. Phil said Berkeley is the last free place on the planet, I would say that today Tightwad Hill is.

If anyone is interested, we could meet in front of the Greek Theater at say 3:00 and I'll lead the way to the hill. It's ok, I know the mayor and the chief of police of Tightwad Hill, California

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By jamie (Mountainchain) on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 07:49 pm: Edit Post

I agree with what everyone has said so far, the show was spectacular from the Dark Star-ish opening jam to the dueling guitars in Soulshine to the off the hook Watchtower, excellent Unbroken (the Q plays the hell out of this song, the jam reminds me of the post-Eyes segments of 73-74 when they're alternating between the maj7 and minor themes--just awesome!), perfect Help and beatiful Angel Band. But a few standout moments that haven't been mentioned so far:

The jam out of Crazy Fingers built up really well into a whacked-out, dissonate climax that almost dissolved into one of those spacey transitional moments ala the jam between Scarlet and Blue Sky, but instead just pushed the envelope far enough to crystallize into a serious group-mind moment and then returned to the jam. Breathtaking.

Then the Wheel came, played very slow with an almost lyrical feel. Gorgeously played with subtle runs dancing in from Jimmy and Rob's side. This contrasted nicely when they really slammed it to us in the jam after the second chorus and then rolled it back to the sweet verse theme. I thought this song would be the highlight of the set, until...

Cumberland! We all know how they rip this one up in between verses, but I thought the jam after the first verse was particularly phenomenal. Right at the high point Molo went off on a sick octopus-style fill similar to the one just before Scarlet and then synched up with Phil perfectly on the next measure for four strong quarter notes, then they all reined it in to return to the next verse. Great to see Phil and Molo looking at each other and locked in so tight. An amazing jam.

Second set has been pretty well covered here, but no one has mentioned how when they were all standing on stage getting ready to play the encore they all sort of look around, then Phil says into his mic, "Well which one do you want to do?" A short pause and then to the audience: "I swear we do this all the time." Sounds like they didn't miss a beat to me.

See you there tonight.

Just got back from the first 2 shows (can't make it tonight) and I'm fried, but wanted to add that I'm fairly certain that there was no jam before Mason's Children to start set 2. I seem to remember them launching straight into to. Just like they did Lovelight to start set 2 last night. As I find my memory I'll try to have more to say.

ps--"Triumphant" doesn't even begin to describe how they laid waste to the Warfield!

Also, there is a verse to Angel Band that they never seem to do, the one about the savior "who bled and died." I wonder if they leave it out because of the explicit Christianity. My friend who went me says that I think way too much when I ask such questions 8-)

2 more things: (1) it seems like virtually every jam from both nights either alluded to Dark Star or Watchtower (even after they played AATW), and (2) heard all kinds of Beatles references and was stunned that they didn't play any. I really needed Lucy in the Sky for my setlist pool, but I won anyway!

ps--also thought I heard my beloved Tears of a Clown jam once, I think on Thursday

Yes, the pre jam and jam into Crazy Fingers was like swimming underneath a glowing bubbling psychedelic sea...least that's what my "flying saucer pupils" took in as I reentered the tunnel on my very strange journey back from the bar.

This was my favorite show of the run..so many months of speculation and hope..we all found IT once again on most electric evening.

Started off at Magnolias, caught a sufficiently crazy ride with an interesting local down to the show. Wound up hanging with Molo for a few minutes, I had read that he grew up in DC so we rapped about that for a bit..MOLO IS A REDSKIN FAN!! :-O

Scarlet opener was the perfect spark..fun..building..Phils vocals sounding great..then..

"everybodies playing in heart of gold band
HEART OF GOLD BAND"..

quite obvious meaning that would have been fine on it's own if it wasn't for the immediate reminder of how The Q has the ability to break it down and take it to the next level..the decontructive jamming that's always been inherent within them. Molo went ape shit and the band followed in short order.

The Blue Sky follow up really was a great call..grins aplenty leading up to Phil singing "good old Sunday morning.."..the kind of moment when you stop dancing and just look on down/or up and soak it all in.

The combination of my alcoholic tendencies and the Warfields no booze in the seats rule caused me to miss Soulshine. Bright side being the fact that I got to reenter to the above mentioned psychedelic sea.

"Built to last while years roll past like cloudscapes in the sky" was nice.

The Cumberland was the first mighty stomp down that's had some of us gravitating out west ever since these shows became a reality.

Intermission!!?? Lights??? what the FUCK is going on :-) My trust in The Q gave me the confidence to "open my eyes" a bit more than I normally would...wound up running into some Zoners with my powers of speach being just as gone as I was...went back up stairs and found one of my buddies that actually made ME look a bit tame.

Mason's brought the power and the fury that I've been waiting for since 7/20/02..Watchtower just continued the rockin' flow..

New Potato laid down the the magic..millions of sparkling rainbow triangles dancing, floating and shimmering off the glorious sea shell of sound(((a delicate symphony indeed)))

Real Thing was dark and beautiful. The fading of "carried his wisdom like a knife" was intense

Danced so hard during Unbroken through GDTRFB that I think I gave myself whiplash n/k

Angel Band

yep

Stopped off at 21 Club? afterwords..kinda shadey bar behind the Warfield. Being the first Heads to roll in we recieved a bit of a chilly reception from the locals. A dude that looked like Rerun from "What's Happening"..actually more like Evil Rerun..was causing a raucous..more and more heads roll in..finally the dude just screams out "WHO DA FUCK IS PHIL LEESHE ANYWAY"

Does anyone remember the end of Franklin's on Thursday night? Phil is facing his equipment with his back to the audience when it's wrapping up and he lays down those super huge BOMBS that kept building in intensity; I thought the Warfield might crumble, seriously. It wasn't music, it was like Phil placed his signature on the work of art and high his band had just created and accomplished. Mind boggling. If you don't remember that, see your doctor soon.

Those shows were almost as good as the Dead at Irvine during the West Coast sessions. Please don't hate me.

I have 9/25/03 on CD and I hope to have the other two in August. That show is absolutely awesome, especially the Unbroken Chain> Help> Slip> Franks. :-)
