I have been listening to 7/7/78 a bunch lately in which I just dug out of my personal archive. I forgot what a crispy board it was by the way. The Music Never Stopped to finish set 1 is incredible. It would be neat to see them play it tonight ! 7/8 is the one I always hear about but 7/7 is quite a show. I saw the boys 6/17 in Va beach for the first time since the reconvergence and let me say I was in awe. I wanted to quite my job
do you mean "quiet" your job?
(joke)
any word on setlist yet?

Why do you suppose they leave the Black Muddy alone vocally?..cause of Soliders Field?
>>Why do you suppose they leave the Black Muddy alone vocally?..cause of Soliders Field?<<
Probably because they were the last words Jerry uttered...to us anyway..
Makes me want to move back to CO!
Not to get picky, but he does back-ups on Box of Rain doesn't he?
Wait let me respond to my own last post..."YEAH,YEAH,YEAH"
so what was set 2?? anyone??
I'll bet it just ended

And now for a super quick review, I'm beat.
Set I started out rockin', much more energy than last night, smoother, better played, flat out rockin' all the way through CRS. Mellowed out a bit on the Rat Dog fest, but very very well done, sounded great, Deal closer was smokin', though in this reviewer's HO Jimmy is holding back on us . . . he hit maybe four bars of the sick Deal jam and then retreated, he has about three more gears folks . . . come on Jimmy, LET IT RIP man!!!
Set two was well played as well, a bit mellower, though things really picked up with Mason's Phil brought us down again with a sweet 'Lil Piece . . . then shooomp! shooomp da na naaaahhhh! Come Together! Excellent version, great to hear that.
Then there was Drums. This will warrant a seperate review. Maybe the best drums I have seen.
Good to finish, West LA low end funky smoggy little red light on the speedway; Sugaree Joan Show Stopper Crowd Pleaser. Sugar mag/ssdd solid, good energy here too, jammed out well, but, sigh, that high gear is still there waiting to be kicked in . . . soon I hope.
E: Donor Rap, Phil mentions the 25th anniversary, asks who was there too, lots of yells, then he makes a bad joke about our Grandfathers having all their records . . . sheesh, then a better than standard Box to close it.
Marked improvement from last night. Songs flowed better, transitions were tighter, everybody was on top of it and it showed. Its a good sign when you have trouble concocting the set list after it happens, and this is with sober people helping . . . We're encroaching into A- territory here, song selection was diverse. This band still has some serious untapped potential that was hinted at tonight.
wacko on the beam....absolutely! GREAT DRUMS. I think the come together warrants own thread, Stuuning song, setting and lights. Candyman was strechin it for me, but liked Bobs West LA. Box was a great ending. There were some outstanding james in both sets. Mucho Grande Tahnks for those who allowed us to share apace, and a special thanks to Headlight and Lovely Wife who were great seaamates, as were LT & GT. Our full first show togther, and here's to doing it again with style and rest tomorrow.
Aloha, sports fans. Bogus fake setlist tweekers, go play in traffic. Rabbits could get dangerous when misinformed, so rabbit, buzz my cell if I'm at a show and you KNOW i'm up...
OK.
In the past (via my experience at the Rocks) Day One is "Altitude Acclimation" - a slower set that amazes, yet leaves you lacking (and which sounds amazing later in the comfort of your living room).
Day Two is a wicked energy "apology for last night" that makes you dance, smile, and ask "Where are they going to play next? Let's Go!!!" Then they move on to the new city.
So, true to form, the Dead fulfilled the first night role with sweet, "lazy", gorgeous show. I need to hear that aging!
Tonight, they had an "Altitude Adjustment" - with a vengence! I left asking myself "Where are they playing next? Let's go!"
And there are three more to go......

a mic and monitor was setup in the area between Bobby and Jimmy, but no other special guests came onstage.
Phil acknowledged the 25th anniversary of GD's 1st show at Red Rocks at the beginning of the donor rap. after the donor rap, Bob chimed in with "pray for peace"
It's pretty awesome to wake up in the AM, check your setlist with coffee, and find last night's show streaming. Wow. Thanks y'all.
This coffee>streaming thing is becoming a glorious ritual
Thanks again TR>>>>>>>>>
How do you like your Dead in the morning?
>I don't think Bobby could sing Loser very convincingly (sp?) but I'd still like to hear it...
He sings the shit outta that song, imo. Very convincing. The RD version at Alpine last summer was one of the highlights of the weekend.
Even So>October Queen is a great pairing of tunes, imo. Sounded fantastic on the streams from ?Camden? ?PNC? Sounds great on this stream, too!
how close can you get to hear the soundcheck taperrob? thanks for all the information, you are the best!
I've seen Bobby do Loser with Ratdog and I can state, unequivocally, he does sing the shit out of the song.
Sounds phuckin' great on The Radio...
checking setlists, reading reviews, jammin to the Dead at my desk (coffee in hand, of course)...I guess if you have to be at work and didn't make it to the shows, this isn't too bad...can't WAIT to see what they play tonight!!
I know it ain't bein' there, but this coffee streaming these shows is a helluvalot of fun! Thanks TR!
Those at work listening to stream..it would be funny to get up and start dancing for a couple of minutes..
What do you mean a couple of minutes! My fellow workers are starting to wonder!
I love this technology thing. Remember the days of waiting for tapes. If you did not tape the show yourself (which we often did) you would have to wait months, sometimes years, to hear a show that you were at. This next morning thing rocks. I am capturing the stream from work (coffee in hand of course) and will be sharing it on furthurnet.org when I get home -- Along with last nights show and the 4th (Willie's Picnic).
NOTE: There is a thread in TECHIE section of this disussion board where I discrbed how to capture the stream from Live365. Ripcast 1.5 rules. Not as complcated as the Ripcast 1.4 rigamarole (sp?). After it is captured you can listen at your leisure -- replay killer jams, if you want, instead of having to wait 3 1/2 hours for it to come around again.
Ha ha ha - I hear ya Phil!! I mean, shouldn't our co-workers know by now there's a tour going on that we should be at? Doesn't this happen every time? Besides, the office can use a good dose of Dead; then again, can't everyone??
Thank you thank you thank you to all those involved with providing the "day-after" streams. Such a beautiful gesture keeping in the spirit of what's great about the GD family and music...Thanks again from my office!
Maybe we should have a united, two minute dance, (coffee in hand) tomorrow morning at designated time, say 10:00 a.m. eastern?
2 minute Cyber Dance!
about last night...
HOLY SHIT!!!!
that was EPIC!
all of you that are bitching about the set list need to listen to this show because it was an A.
the drums was one of the most intense convert experiences i have ever had and i was sober. then joan sealed it with the sugaree.
what will happen tonight?
i got some real bunk info last night sorry
For any of you "negaheads" looking to get on here and find some silly criticism to harp on, please save it. If you have any Dead experience at all, and if you are a fan of the perfect balance between eye and ear, then you will find little if anything to whine about regarding last night's show at Red Rocks.
Pure magic, especially when compared to Sunday. I kept telling my friends all day that I envisioned all the members of the band breaking into Mickey's hotel room last night and tickling him until he begged for mercy. I bet that's what happened, because just as his tantrum set the tone for Sunday's show, his smile set the tone for Monday.
If ever you should avoid judging a book by it's cover, this would be the time. Everyone knew from the first note of Stranger that last night would put Sunday to shame. The Stranger had the feel of the really good Mydland shows -- soulful, but with enough twists and tension to fit the nature of the lyrics and hook. Baby Blue was emotive and well-sung...ditto for She Said. I noticed in the jam of She Said that Joan was really feeling it, particularly with the very Donna-like, eastern lines she was belting against Jimmy's lead before they went to the transition into Loser (with a cool Dark Star tease...band changed chords twice.) LOSER! Wow. Bobby. Wow. Again, the harmonies! Awesome singing by all. Thought the rest of the set was steady and ended with an outstanding Deal -- the crowd was juiced.
I'll spare you song by song from here out. Let me just say that the Drums AND Space were maybe the best I have ever seen. Mickey vindicating himself complete with surgical mask. Never before have I heard that kind of low-end at Red Rocks -- seemed to climb your leg and punch a hole in your gut. Kitaro was a nice treat, but it was Mickey's night, and he came through in spades. However, the biggest thrill of the night for me came in Sugaree. For those of you doubting Joan in the least, JUST STOP. She is the shit. I have seen scores of shows at Red Rocks, and I have never seen anyone command an audience like she did with the old Jerry classic. Amazing. Stupendous. Chilling. Thrilling. Soulful. Heartfelt. Masterful. She took the bull by the horns and ripped it's head off. Better yet, the rest of the band had to have had the same chills going as the audience, and they responded with a wonderfully energetic Sugar Mag and SSDD. People were FREAKING OUT! Nice job, Joan. We're sold. Welcome, and please hang around for a while. Please join Warren and PLQ for some tunes later this year.
One more note on the non-original members. I was sold on Rob B. a long time ago, but I have always been skeptical of Jeff for some reason. Perhaps it's because the RatDog shows I saw did not highlight him enough. Regardless, I am here to say that Jeff is SWEET. His playing and energy last night was a show in itself. Both his piano and Hammond playing were outstanding. Just can't get enough of the way he and Rob move about the keys rig.
Sugaree...wow. Still not over it...goose bumps.
Nice job, folks. Last night was truly special. I plead my case to Angels, in the court of paradise.
This Sugaree is indeed fantastic
Let me state first off that tops or not "It's All Good"!! This show was definitely a step up from Sunday. The Drums were huge. I loved She Said with Joan, now I have hopes for a Bobbi McGee. There was a slight lull at the end of the first set with a Ratdog run but thats OK cause it sets you up for a rockin 2nd. Coming out of Space the tempo picked up and the crowd got into the groove. Sugaree was great hearing Joan all over it. Topped off with a great desert with Box. Looking for the Estimated - Eyes tonight. Peace...
The soundcheck can be heard from the line at the top of the venue.
Just heard West LA..... those keyboards really sounded aweful.
Sugaree redemption for sure!!!!!!!!!
Joan does belt it out with soul, and the band comes together to deliver with authority! Oh yea...
This is one of the few shows on this tour where the playing lives up to and even surpases the setlist.
I always said I would rather see a show with a mediocre looking setlist if the band is 'on' than "the killer setlist" when the band is not 'on'
BuddhaT-
Ted, STOP IT, you're killin me here at work! What I really need to hear is "it sucked, be glad that you weren't able to make it!!!!"
Just kidding, of course! Glad the shows have been smokin.
And, for those that don't know already, Ted has a SWEEEEEEEET band called Purple Buddha, check 'em out. I believe they are playing somewhere in the Denver area over the next few days.
mon. was the only show I saw at red rocks, my others were spac.ct,gratewoods and I must say the band was more consistent thru the whole show and played their asses off. Many cool jerry tunes and the songs before drums had a special meaning for me. I was blown away by the drums and the box of rain encore was right for me where I needed it. Met taperrob, lessthan, photographix their crews and a few others at Denver marriot west, hope to cross paths again someday.
>>>>about last night... HOLY SHIT!!!! that was EPIC! all of you that are bitching about the set list need to listen to this show because it was an A. the drums was one of the most intense convert experiences i have ever had and i was sober. then joan sealed it with the sugaree.
We agree....this show was a monster. it didn't matter about the setlist because they were playing so well. I had no desire to see ratdog songs and they provided a nice breather from the intensity of the show. Looks like crap on paper but it was a smoker. This is the best show I've seen post dead....the xfactor was alive and kicking
I'm glad others feel the same way.
this was my 3rd show of the summer, and i was blissed beyond words. much better than the first 2 shows (summerfest, redrocks #1). their energy was sooooo good. the playing was tight, joan was ferocious, and the crowd was pumped...ALL NIGHT LONG!
Come Together was sublime. order yours today...seriously.
my head hurts and is very cloudy and i have so much damn work sitting on my desk so no detail review but...
this was defenitly THE show of the first three dates at the rocks.
if i looked at the setlists i would tell you this was the worst of the nights, but everyone was so ON this night that it was ridiculous. two new tunes, and two ratdog tunes couldn't even kill the energy that was made this night. this night was perfect. perfect. perfect. get this show.
zan, jbird....pleasure once again hanging with you guys.
oh yeah...
drums this night were HUUUUUUGGGGEEEE!!!
mickey, billy, and kitaro were amazing. mickey and kitaro locked in on the big drums. billy with his back facing them never even missed a beat. mickey absolutly mutilating the beam. best drums i ever saw.
ps. joan sings a damn fine sugaree
the ending of Sugaree gave me goosebumps. Best post Jerry vocal performance yet!!
>>>>This Sugaree is indeed fantastic
My buddy calls it the best he's ever heard
... And I'm that buddy. I stand by it, too.
Top to bottom, this show was brilliant. I didn't even mind the Mickey song, which Jimmy saved with some scorching leads! The energy was just unbelievable through the whole night.
The ONLY thing that could've made this show better would have been a Stranger>Franklin's to open.
just got my cds and i was right, these shows were SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the party favors helped, but the energy on these cds is INSANE!
