Getting pumped up for the show! Hoping for a Cumberland Blues like 6-27-04. I live on Cumberland Rd miles down the road from the venue!!
Note for any one coming tomorrow night. IT COLD HERE IN INDY. Nightime low last night was 66 degrees!
Extremely Excited!
SEE YOU IN THE LOT.
After viewing the setlist for alpine that was just finished, i can breathe a fresh sigh of relief bcuzz they did not play St Stephen or Dark Star yet, we a re gonna get that at deer creek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
see ya in 20 hours
Yep. Deer Creek is gonna be the one. Maybe a Weather Report too.
I'm not going to be there, so I imagine it will be even better than expected. And then Pine KNb and Blossom will suck; just my luck.
yeah...
Looking good for DS, St. Steven>Eleven and maybe a Death Don't or Scarlet/Fire. I kinda wanted to hear an Other One but oh well, I'll take what I can get (Cortez, Low Spark). Probably a Samson on Sunday or Looks Like Rain.
I Still want Warren to bust out Soulshine with the Dead
hey now!
saw every dead and dead related show at the creek since the first in 89...except 93 where they played dark star. saw most all the richfield's after 90...except the 92 show with dark star. saw most every omni show after 91...except 94 with the dark star. same goes with soldier field in the 90's, except the dark star. My friends all gave me so much shit. My first dark star wasn't until 4-17-99 (thanks phil/kimock and friends!!!-first shows at the warfield taboot!)
since I have a 3 week delightful baby girl and will be missing tonight's show there (borders on physical pain...), you folks are sure to get dark star.
enjoy it...and if there is a king solomon's marbles thrown in there, please all have a drink for me!
peace,
Chris
and what cover will they pull out. So far we have: dylan, beatles, pink floyd, Zeppelin!, Elton John, U2, Traffic, Van Morrison, Neil Young, off the top of my head; any ideas???
My bet is on Eight MIles High again.

I'm kinda curious about the 1000 stars placement.
After 02 PLQ tour I was pretty sick of this song, but it was jammed out a little bit with some type II exploration in chula vista...I hope they keep exploring the song despite my prior "bathroom break" sentiments.
thanks for ALL the info, as usual, TR
btw, congrats on the cumberland, Ice cream kid
I have a feeling there's gonna be some disgruntled folks in Indy.
Doesn't look like the epic that some were expecting
everyone whines. How can you with a lsd out of space
Regardless of song selection, if they played with half the drive they had last night, it surely smoked. Looking forward to the reviews.
>>I have a feeling there's gonna be some disgruntled folks in Indy.
Doesn't look like the epic that some were expecting
thats a pretty ignorant statment
Personally, I think it is a pretty interesting song selection. Big River>Cumberland. Bertha! Lotsa good stuff....and they're still pulling new stuff out. I Love It!
It's called an opinion
I just have a feeling it wasn't that hot of a show.
I'm not entirely basing it on the setlest although it looks to be the weakest of the second leg thus far.
First set looks pretty good though.
>>>>>I have a feeling there's gonna be some disgruntled folks in Indy.
Doesn't look like the epic that some were expecting
Looks like a three course meal & The Dead forgot the steak.
I love that Linda Ronstadt dedication.
Did Warren get escorted out by some Clear Channel goons?
>>It's called an opinion
ok and i have mine and my opinion is that it is ignorant to judge a show you have not heard.
>>I'm not entirely basing it on the setlest although it looks to be the weakest of the second leg thus far.
based on two other shows, anyway let see what the reviews are like tomorrow from people who were at the show.
now now, first set looks nice, but 2nd set does seem a lil devoid of type 2 exploration. Only the strange and night of 1000 stars...and a deep elem.....yeah, I can see where some people might be disappointed. Can't be a Dark Star, O1, Playin, Unbroken, Viola, insert monster-jam-vehicle-here played EVERY night. We'll just have to wait for the tapes/reviews I guess. I would like to hear the GDTRFB>Sugar Mag with a SSDD tagged on
what about High Time that coulda smoked for sure with mr.Haynes on vox
Wow that looks like a sick ass show.
Was that Desperado Warren solo or with the whole band?
Fair enough Mike
It's just a hunch on my part. A lot of folks thought this would be THE show of the tour so far. It sure doesn't look like it.
I could very well be wrong and they could've played those tunes with a lot of spunk. But, I tend to trust my intuition and it told me this show was marginal and a lot a people with high hopes were let down.
It's nothing against the Dead. They're bound to have a stinker now and then.
Just popping in to check the setlists, wondering if it might be worth showing up somewhere with The Mrs. next weekend to see a show - not expecting to get blown away, but just to get a night out, & what do I see?
The same stupid argument over the freedom to express an opinion other than "The Dead is awesome".
Too #&$*ing funny........
Four years from now, The Dead will be trying to elect Hillary president & you'll still be fighting over whether someone should complain about the shows/setlists........
Mike, everyone is entitled to their opinion but if you have been to enough Dead shows (including Grateful Dead) you can get some feel for a show by looking at the setlist. I would not entirely base an opinion on set list but you can get a feel for a show by looking at the setlist. That said, this Creek show looked to have a strong 1st set. However the second set looks weak especially based on what 1st set looked like. The opener of Desparado is ridiculous. I don't even feel the need to comment on it. If I had been at the Creek I would have been pissed off with this opener. Next, you would hope for a strong run after that opener. Jack Straw is nice but then 1000 stars? Ugh. Deep Elem is nice but then Strange Remain into drums/space. Ya, no doubt let down. Especially considered its the Creek. At this point one assumes a seriously stacked post d/s but it did not happen. At least High Time was cool. My take on it is that they must have been tired and ran out of gas for the second set. Anways its no big deal but if I had made the drive out to the Creek, I would have walked out of there disappointed. I do agree that we need to listen to it but the second set is cleary one of the weaker ones this tour....peace.
Did I miss something about Linda Rondstadt? And could someone kindly explain the joke (I assume) about Warren getting escorted out by Clear Channel goons?
Looks like another great show, and it seems safe to say that Leg 2 has picked up exactly where Leg 1 left off... with the Boys playing solid, fun shows every night!
And yes, everyone is entitled to an opinion, though it amuses me just how uninformed and sometimes ignorant people's opinions can be... especially when comments are made about the appropriateness of song placement in the sets, and whether or not it's like a "real" Dead/Grateful Dead concert. Take a look back through Deadbase to '72, '73, or '74... most would agree that there were at least a few *decent* shows during these years. The song placement was completely arbitrary... sometimes a Dark Star in the middle of the first set, sometimes a Dire Wolf in the middle of a second set. Personally, I think it's refreshing to see them break out of the mold that trapped them in the late 80's and early 90's and return to their earlier ways... it makes for more surprises. But that's just MY opinion.

Vegas Casino Boots Singer Linda Ronstadt
1 hour, 15 minutes ago
LAS VEGAS - Singer Linda Ronstadt (news) not only got booed, she got the boot after lauding filmmaker Michael Moore and his new movie "Fahrenheit 9/11" during a performance at the Aladdin hotel-casino.
AP Photo
Before singing "Desperado" for an encore Saturday night, the 58-year-old rocker called Moore a "great American patriot" and "someone who is spreading the truth." She also encouraged everybody to see the documentary about President Bush (news - web sites).
Ronstadt's comments drew loud boos and some of the 4,500 people in attendance stormed out of the theater. People also tore down concert posters and tossed cocktails into the air.
"It was a very ugly scene," Aladdin President Bill Timmins told The Associated Press. "She praised him and all of a sudden all bedlam broke loose."
Timmins, who is British and was watching the show, decided Ronstadt had to go — for good. Timmins said he didn't allow Ronstadt back in her luxury suite and she was escorted off the property.
Ronstadt's antics "spoiled a wonderful evening for our guests and we had to do something about it," Timmins said.
Timmins said it was the first time he sent a performer packing.
"As long as I'm here, she's not going to play," Timmins said.
Ronstadt had been booked to play the Aladdin for only one show.
Calls to Ronstadt's manager were not immediately returned.
In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal before the show, Ronstadt said "I keep hoping that if I'm annoying enough to them, they won't hire me back."
Looks like she got her wish.
Matt, I agree with you on song placement. For example I like second set FOTD, West LA, Mexicali etc. First set Scarlet, Playin, Around +Around etc. However a second set opener of desparado at Deer Creek?? Does this even need to be explained? 1000 stars and Strange Remain into Drums? Thank God for the Jack Straw and Deep Elem Blues.Glad I didnt make the drive to this show. JMO.....peace.
Whats up with the politics - are they going to tell us how they feel about abortion next? I thought we were here for music. Grateful Dead was never too involved in politics, and I liked it that way. I'm interested in some mind blowing music.
Legalize it - Nader for President
Looks like anothere grate show!
Awesome that they wanted to show solidarity with Linda, but an Eagles song?? Hopefully that's a one timer..
Nader = Bush in '04.
any actual reviews? anyone who was there?
Am waiting for the reviews........Cosmic, where for art thou you lucky A-hole!
The Dead have always been somewhat political.Hell they played a benefit for the Black Panthers in the 60's and they dedicated a song to a member of The Irish Republican Army in the 80's.
>>you have been to enough Dead shows (including Grateful Dead) you can get some feel for a show by looking at the setlist
I've found almost the opposite to be true. Many times (see '93-'95), I've seen great set lists with mediocre shows. I find that my expectations are so high when I hear a song like scarlet (see 5/8/77) that I'm almost always let down. When I don't care about the setlist, I find that I connect with the music more purely. Or, I'll be pissed off at the show only to get the tape later and realize that I missed a pretty hot show.
A great example is 3/22/95. First set opener - victim. Hear this song live and on tape multiple times and was never really impressed. But, Jerry was just ripping and I was like 'Wow, this is the first time in a while that I've heard jerry "LEAD" the band'. It was awesome. Next, foolish heart. Always fun, but seldom a vehicle for exploration. Again, jerry killed. It must've been 15 minutes long. He's gone>Space. heard this dozens of times, but never quite connected the same for me.
Anyway, my point is that based on setlists, you've got a 50/50 chance of a 'magical' night. Oh yeah, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder (I thought this was a pretty solid set list).
big river>cumberland..... I don't know if my legs would up. I would of been doing some big time jed clampitt down home stomping.
Dirk, Victim is one thing but Desparado is altogether something else.....peace.
Well, Dead.net is reporting a Lucy in the sky after d/s which we all missed last night. That does make the setlist better though the desparado will forever be laughable......peace.
I know this is a tired point. But I have seen the worse shows with the best looking setlists. and the best shows with the worst looking setlists. Its all about the energy people. How long have you guys been seeing shows? Jeez
for those of you questioning tonite's setlist, you need to realize that the creek was part 3 in a 3 part series. If you were looking for the blazer show you should have looked to friday night in st. louis. part 2 was alpine which phil had demonstrated just how a lot of us were feeling, like a zombie. after friday and a long trip to alpine the boyz knew exactly what to do.
deer creek fell on day 3, end of weekend kind of show, which is why it was mellow. if you were trying to shoot your wad at the creek show you may have had a rough time. remember, timing is everything !!!!
"I see you've got your list out, say your piece and get out"!
A few points: 1)One has to realize that the Grateful Dead always had a sense of humor and it is nice to see The Dead do as well by playing Desparado. This very much reminds me of Bob's line in Truckin' "ever since she went and had a sex change" at a show in the early 80's near John Hopkins University. For those who are not aware, this is the location of the first sex change operation, so this is funny. Likewise, drunk Vegas patrons ripping down posters of Rondstat's due to her suggesting people have an open mind and see Michael Moore's new movie, is something that is ripe for responding to and The Dead did just that. Afterall, do we not expect this Band to stick up for Freedom?
2)On paper, The Creek show looks pretty good. So you did not get a Dark Star, who does anymore. So it might have been somewhat mellow, this Band is mellow often times, they are in their later years, but they still sound damn good. If you want an all out "balls to the wall" show, I suggest you throw in a tape from '67 -'74. Is it me or does anyone else notice that throughout the years the Grateful Dead has had many different sounds and styles?
3)Can anyone really convince themselves that these guys ARE NOT a whole lot better than the Grateful Dead '93-'95? Think about it, this is a decade later and it appears they actually have gotten better. How many bands in their 50's-60's can say that? Enjoy the boys while they last.
REAL REVIEW HERE I WAS THERE
1
Golden Rd, Cold Rain>Bertha, Glory Rd, Liberty, Box, Big River>Cum Blues, Bob speaks
2
Desparado(deadicated to linda R), Jam>Straw, 1000 stars, Deep Elem, Only the starnge remain,
SpaceJam>Drums>Space>LSD>GDTRFB, Sugar Mag>SSDD>we bid you tease, Phil Speaks, Bobby mentions headcount again,
encore: High Time, WBYGN
Just woke up from a 300 am return from the creek, heading out for boston soon. The show was very good, not unbelievable, but very very good. First let me say that the venue was about 90 percent full. The lawn was pretty much philled, only the vip boxes were empty on the pavillion. My tix were section g row a so I could see the boyz well, and they were on tonight.
Golden Road: awesome old school opener lots of energy and a bouncy vocal performance from the boys, the soundboard sounded a little tinny but the treble was soon adjusted down.
Cold Rain: Sweet considering the weather, it was only a high of around 65 and the venue was COLD for july, its folowing them from red rox I guess,
good jamming from herring here.
Segue Bertha: Tight segue into Bertha, and a rockin Bertha, not slow like some of em, this was a fun bertha, nothing to special tho
GloryRd: Mellow warren tune, nuff said
Segue to Liberty: Not my favorite even with Jerry nuff said. Sounded tight tho
BOX!: Nice fairly mellow box, Phil sounded good on vocals, turn up phil in the mix tho guys!!
His bass is sometimes a lil obscured by all those axes up there. Thank you for the Box and yes it was raining a little bit, I believed it and I needed it and then I left it there!
BIG RIVER!> Was hot as hell!!!!!!Smokin playing all around and then SEGUE>>>>>
CUMBERLAND: NIce!! Bob hit the vocals great Phils bass was humping out that thumper of a bassline, this my friends was the Grateful Dead!
setbreak/ganja all around
Desparado: OK it was kinda silly and as the opening notes hit I sat down for another bowl but hey, it was only like 2 or 3 minute jam and Linda got screwed for hating bush and i hate bush so whatever, on with the show boyz!
Jam>: weird little jam sounding for a time like a jed and a maybe a little hes gone and then into>>>
Jack Straw: Good Straw, seen it alot, like it.
1000 Stars: another bowl here, just kick back and enjoy the lights.
Deep Elem: Here we go kids, this ROCKED and I mean smoked, the crowd was really singin this one and Warren smoked the blues solo, hes a little southern rock for me but he smoked this tune, and i have to say in respect for Warren, he can sing well lead and harmony and he did all night. This Elem also featured an absolutly SICK keyboard solo, nice one bro, like the song says, sometimes the lights all shining on me, when it was on you bro, you frickin rocked me man and Ive seen Brent and vince and paige and all of em.
Only the Silly Remain: its in the title. However it did contain some pretty cool jamming around minute 7 or 8
Space Jam: around 5 minutes of noodling space w/ the full line up, then bob left followed by one by one everyone except>>>
Drums: Good drums as always
Space: Short, thats all i can say
LSD: Good version of this tune, I liked it with Jerry I liked last night, good stuff.
GDTRFB: this had a sort of segue but more of a fizzle to a fry if ya dig. Standard dead tune, we all know it and have seen it. Herring was pretty good here as was Warren, Phil needed to be turned up on Bass. Ok feelin bad.
Sugar Mag: Crowd was pumped and the song was played well and tightly nice solos all around, clean exchange to:
SSDD: which rocked as usual
Encore: HIGH TIME!!!!!! This was flippin awesome! Its about time I saw a show that actually peaked @ the encore instead of in the first set or whatever. The crowd singing the words were actually as loud as the band and I was in the pavillion. Very strong emotional tune which was played flawlessly. Just when I thought the tune had peaked it came to the line "Go in when its rainin", and i realized why they played it, man this was a great version jerry or no, everytime the chorus came back, "I'll show you, a high time" the crowd just got louder and louder....so nice of a peak into a little denoument:
WBYGN: sweet acapella w/ hand clap audience part., nice to see the boys up there talking to the crowd smiling being a family again, it was beautiful. Hardly anyone left, even after the bid you goodnight, we all just stood there, we had ourselves an evening with the Grateful Dead.
The shakedown was fat and vending was widespread BTW.
see you all in Beantown!
Who sang High Time?
>>>>"I see you've got your list out, say your piece and get out"!<<<<
that's pretty witty davey, for your 7th post.
I can't wait for #8. if you ain't got a clue,
don't say nuttin'. apparently you have no clue.
your coment sounds quite PHISHY.
Joshua
Thanks for the great review.
...another point of view from someone that was there...
The Dead
07.25.04
Verizon – aka DeerCreek
Noblesville, IN
Just woke up and am to gather my thoughts on last night’s Dead show. It is one man’s opinion and will be slightly biased because I would rather see Phil and Friends (aka PLQ) tour instead of the Dead, but that is saved for another discussion. Having three of the five members of the Quintet playing with the Dead had me curious, to say the least.
First Set
Jam>
Golden Road
Cold Rain & Snow>
Bertha
You Remind Me>
Liberty
Box Of Rain
Big River>
Cumberland Blues
Headcount Rap
The opening jam > Golden Road > Cold Rain and Snow was a slower tempo than I was used to, but it worked and the crowd was up and on their feet. The key changes were nearly flawless and not a lot of needless noodling between songs. Bertha moved as far as playing goes, but the vocals were pretty much “talked through” as opposed to sung (like Rob can do). The first segment of this show was carefully crafted to set the tone for an incredible first set.
You Remind Me (Warren on Vocals) was not all that exciting for me, but true to form as with the Allman Brothers Band, the fourth spot of the setlist is reserved for something new. I’m sure the band will continue to explore this song, as it does have incredible potential. Liberty was also tight, but again, the vocals were spoken and not sung. I miss Rob!
Box of Rain, with Phil in vocals, was nice to hear since the weather was threatening rain for that evening. To hear the crowd sing along with Phil (...a box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through...) could have been the highlight of the night for me.
Big River > Cumberland was absolutely smoking. At first the rifts that Jimmy and Warren were playing sounded like “One Way Out”, but then Bobby added his part and it was off to the races. Cumberland was as close to a PLQ version as you could get. Everyone was pushing full throttle, and even the security and DeerCreek workers were tapping their feet and having a good time.
Set 2:
#Desperado
Jam> Jack Straw>
Night Of 1000 Stars
@Deep Elem Blues
Only The Strange Remain>
Space/Drumz>
Lucy In The Sky>
Going Down the Road Feeling Bad>
Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream
Donor Rap
#=dedicated to Linda Ronstadt
@=Bobby acoustic
There will be a lot of discussion on why Desperado was chosen as a second set opener. I was told they sound checked the song for 45 minutes, so there was no doubt they would play it, but when was the question. A personally enjoyed it for two reasons. 1) The spotlight was on Warren’s vocals. 2) Totally unexpected.
Jack Straw > 1000 Stars was a fun way to get things rolling again after a sweet 1st set and Warren opening the 2nd set with Desperado. I did, though, start to notice some things developing on stage (as we were pretty close to the action). The mix was not as good as the first set. Bobby was constantly making motions to the on-stage sound guys. It seemed that everyone was competing for sound, and quite honestly, my ears hurt at the beginning of the second set.
Things got worse with Deep Elem as again the mix was horrible. No one appeared to be on the same page, and Warren and Jimmy were basically cut off from participating. Then comes rock bottom with Only the Strange Remain. This was a complete nightmare! Everyone doing there own thing and trying to be loader than everyone else. This is not a bash on Mickey singing (although I could do without it), but he seemed off beat (because of the bad mix, volume, and sound). Drummers leave and now we get Space...horrible! I’m beginning to think that this second set is going to be a washout, and I was ready to head to the lawn and meet some new people.
Surprising enough, the Drumz segment saved the second set. Whatever was going on with sound must have been fixed and maybe (this is just a guess) there were some conversations backstage. I not a big fan of Drumz, but I was really getting into it. There was a small Space Reprise, and then Warren picks up where Mickey and Bill left off.
Lucy in the Sky got the crowd back in the action. Crowd participating was awesome, simply because Deep Elem > Strange > Space did not allow for it. Everyone was singing, the band and the crowd. There was definitely a different vibe on stage.
Going Down the Road > Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream had the crowd up for the rest of the night. Again, the crowd was dancing and the boys looked like they were having fun. These two songs are safe, but are high octane.
Encore:
^High Time
Bid You Goodnight
^=Bobby's daughter runs onstage to daddy.
High Time was a fun way to end the night. The crowd had definitely connected and the band was able to tap into that energy (as Phil said during his donor rap – “I looks like you guys had a fun time!”). The tone during Bid You Goodnight was playful and fun. Bobby’s daughter was playing games with Jeff and Mickey. Mickey and Billy had a look on their face, knowing that they played a big part in getting the second set out of the rut it started in.
My friend went to the St. Louis show and said that one was better, but this one was “different”. All in all, what you would expect from a Dead show at DeerCreek...different...at least from my point of view.
This show rocked. Plain and Simple. It the best post Jerry show I've seen at Deer Creek....Everyone in the band seemed fired up from the start. Get a copy of this show...
However, the sound did suck at first....it took them half-way through the first set to get the mix right.....isn't that what soundcheck is for?
After learning about the Desperado/Linda Rondstadt story, I think it's great that they played this... once upon a time the Grateful Dead epitomized what it meant to be a MISFIT and PRANKSTER... it's one of the more tongue-in-cheek statements they've made in a while. Brings back memories of them playing Desolation Row while people threw bottles at security guards at... DEER CREEK.... let's not forget that the Dead do not owe this venue ANYTHING after what happened there in '95... we're lucky that they're still willing to play there!
Thanks for all the great reviews you guys! I'm noticing a few trends which we also witnessed out here in the West during the first leg...
One, the setlist has no bearing on how the show was or how the band played... Secondly, each show has a completely "different" feel!
"Goes to show you don't ever know, watch each card you play and play it slow.... Wait until that deal come round!"
Peace!
Thanks for the set reviews all. By the way, if somebody says that a show is not "On", don't get brainwashed and attack them. After all, its not blasphemy........peace.
Who sang High Time???
Warren sang High Time
Thanks for the reviews. I can't wait for Pine Knob and Blossom.
Here are some pics I took at the Creek...
http://www.pbase.com/rmike/the_dead_at_deer_creek_04
nice pictures mike.
i regonize a few faces from jersey in there! sweet.
The show was better than the setlist. First set smoked from start to finish, with a little lag on "You Remind Me", but it picked up steam with a nice jam. "Bertha>Liberty>Box>River>Cumberland" absolutetly smoked. Did seem like there was time for one more song as the sun was just setting in the cloudy sky. Long set break.
There's a lot of discussion on the 2nd set song choice. As goofy as "Desparado" looks, I actually enjoyed it. It really showcased Warren's vocals. Nice jam into a good, as always, "Jack Straw". "1k stars" started slow, but once again really picked up momentum at the end and "Strange Remain" was played very well with a nice meltdown jam at the end. It's the best Micky song I've heard. Again, doesn't look too impressive on paper, but it worked out nicely. Seemed like they melted from "Strange>Space>Drums>(short)space". LSD again showcased Warren. GDTRFB was best version I've heard and the "Sugar Mag" rocked. Bob had the rock star hat on and it was really fun. "High Time>AWBYGN" was an incredible encore.
Can't really say one tune stood out as "the hightlight" of the show because they were all played really tight and well. My only bitch is they didn't play real long. Encore ended at about 10:40 and we could have used one more song in the second set.
Overall, very good show. Very mellow enjoyable atmosphere (as DC always is). Has a grate time and saw some REALLY kick ass music.
>>>> Encore ended at about 10:40 and we could have used one more song in the second set<<<<<
I think the boyz weir thinking about those of us who have to work. this show capped off an incredible weekend not soon to be forgotten.
I'm jonzin' to go to dte and blossom now. shit,
I can't start this again, can I ??? I think my wife will newter me if I start following the boyz around again. I'm sure I could persuade her if they played hawaii in feb. though. hint, hint.

your coment sounds quite PHISHY.<<<<
Dear Funguy,
I like to make a dumb post every so often so someone will slap me back into lurk mode. My comment was merely a lame jab at the setlist dissectors that did not attend the show. Perhaps when I reach a sufficient number of posts I will resume my pathetic attempts at wit. I might even feel empowered to personally chastise others. Though I will never use the "P" word against someone in the sladerous way you have towards me sir. It is mean and hurtful. I now have to slink back to my lurkers hole with a sign on my back that reads:
I am a Phish Fan
Kick Me!
10:40 ending at Creek? Alpine went to 12:05am.
what time did Creek start? I think the dead took the stage at 8pm at alpine.
I went to all three shows (St. Louis, Alpine & Deer Creek) and it was well worth the 1000 mile round trip!!! I would have to say out of the three shows I saw, the St. Louis show was the best, with Deer Creek a close second, the Alpine show was very mellow and it just didn't have the same energy level as St. Louis & Deer Creek. I'm very tired from traveling and will write a review later.
uncle john. Haven't I seen this post some where else?
the reason the show let out so early was daylight time is not observed in indiana
it is one hour behind eastern time
Klunker my foot!
>>I can't start this again, can I ???
I'm sure a lot of us are pondering this same question this summer. I know I am.
Hi everyone,
OK, I'll get a shot at a review.
First off Green acres is the place to be. This is the place to camp. When we woke up Sunday and the rains were coming and the day stayed cloudy and windy, the weather was one everyone's mind. Its July and I had to wear a hoodie for the show.
Shakedown was large very mellow staff and they let you do what you wanted to. We got in just as Warren took the stage. I thought he did a good job thought he might have played longer but I think he did 7 songs. Highlight had to be "I shall be released" The Dead came on around 7:15 and got everybody going with Golden Road " there's a party today, hey, hey" then the weather theme was played for the set. After G R, they did Cold rain and Snow. Phil sang this one and changed the words from she coming down the stairs flowing her yellow hair to flowing her auburon( sp) hair. From Cold rain right into Bertha,(ran into a rain storm") A strong Betha fast, upbeat had everyone singing and dancing hard. From Bertha they went in "You remind me" Warren sang this and the song didn't do too much for me. It kind of had the beat of Let the good time roll which I thought they were going to play before he starting singing. Never heard this before made for a good time to hit the head. As I came back they went into Liberty (if I were the sun I asked for shade). Next up was Box of Rain. I liked where they played it. Instead of ending the 2nd set and putting pressure on Phil to land a knock out he could relax and just sing. After Box was Big River (dark clouds covered up a clear blue day" 1st time played on tour. Everyone was high pitched dancing then they started to play something not sure what sounded a little like Maggies but Phil stepped up and starting leading the band into Cumberland. It was almost like a solo and the rest of the band fell into Cumberland which had lotss of energy. The 1st set seemed a little short but I think its because there was no jamming between songs or noodling or delays they were just hitting every song in stride.
The second started with Desporado had me wonderindg what happen until the guy next to me clued me in on what went down. Thought this song would have been better if they put it in the middle of the first set but I not a big Eagles fan and its a bit slow to open the 2nd with. It sounded clear but... after this they started a little jam that became JAck Straw( sun so hot) This is such a good tune. After 20 years of touring I'm still not tired of hearing it and I thought they jammed the hell out of it. 1000 stars sounding ok but I thought Samson would have fit better. After stars... Deep Elem. First time for me hearing it and they rocked it. Bobby telling everyone if you go to Deep Elem make sure you have $10.00 when the policeman come around. Only the strange.. Yawn. I couldn't understand a word Mickey was saying. Now I have see this song sound good (Pitt 2002 other ones, Coulmbus last year) but when it worked it was early in the first set when your still feeling funky not deep into the 2nd set and certainly not having just hear Deep Elem but anyway after strange remain they went into a funky space. (no Mickey or Billy) Thought it was a nice change of pace space before drumz. Phil was the first to leave and Warren stayed on with Mickey and Billy for a little while. Drums what can I say. It became very tribal as they took us somewhere in the amazon.(Highlite of nite) After everyone was back on the stage they keep the weather theme going with " Lucy in the sky" Everyone was back on their feet with GDTRFB ( going where the climate suits my clothes) Bobby added the 4th verse to song " going where I can butter my cornbead" This is the verse that Wille sang last year in Camden. As the band slowed the song to the end we weren't ready to give up and keep singing " going down the road feeling bad, Bobby and Warren stepped back to the mike and finished it off. As fast a I could take a drink Bobby launched into Sugar Magnolia to tell everyone about sunshine daydream.. Whe they played, High time (come in when its raining) I looked over to the concession stands and nobody was leaving. There wasn't one person walking over there. The highlight would have to be Bobby's daughter running out and grabbing onto his leg. He ending up going down to one knee and playing for her. She stayed there for bid you goodnight. All in all I thougth the show was good, I saw that Bobby had his tech out alot and the guitars seemed loud. How they handled the three guitar attack, on 3 songs when Warren sang he had his guitar to his side and Bobby played acoustic on one. ALso ran into Reuburt from survior, thought he could have bought me beer since I helped him get a million well maybe the next show he will.
Sorry if I ramble to long for now some rest before Blossom. Take care
Dave
One thing I do recall is that Deer Creek has a really early & strict curfew - probably the reason for the (seeminly - I wasn't there) overall shortness of this show compared to others - Mansfield MA has the same strict curfew policy . . .
If I had to take my pick based on setlists only the St Louis/Alpine look great, this one, mehhh . . .
thank you all the people who dis the set list and were not there, you are not ignorant. Since you were not there surely you know better how it sounded. thank you for your "unique" perspective.
>>the reason the show let out so early was daylight time is not observed in indiana
it is one hour behind eastern time
last summer they didn't end until about 11:40 if my memory serves me right (on a sunday too I think). summer before that they blew the curfew too. daylight is not observed, doesn't mean since it's 11:40 elsewhere that it's 11:40 there, if that makes since. still a hell of a show. setlist doesn't tell 1/2 of the story. saw the show with guys that did the St. Louis>Alpine>DC run and they all said DC was rockin'. no complaints even compared to the monster lists from the previous two nights.
>>Can't really say one tune stood out as "the hightlight" of the show because they were all played really tight and well.
let me retract that statement, as my review failed to mention the Deep Elem. i'd have to say that the Deep Elem and High Time were hightlights of the 2nd set and Bertha on were highlights of the 1st.
Check in cosmic...hope all is well and you represented with the Laker/Stealie shirt.
selasie, what are you talking about? I read a review of yours elsewhere where you said you thought the high time saved the second set. This implies a not so great second set. Whatever man, I have read reviews from people who went and it seems to have been a good show. I thought the second set looked weak as did others last night when it was coming in but people say it smoked. Why dump on people who might not be so into desparado? It seems to me that people worship the band to the point where you can't say anything about them that is remotely critical. Thats sucks cause Jerry use to admit when they sucked a night away. I have a God and it aint the Dead....peace.
All im saying is don't comment on the show if you were not there, it was not directed at anyone in particular.
The second set was weaker than #1, if you really read my review you will notice I did not really like desparado, 1000 stars, strange remain, I just dont want to be overly negative, everyone has thier favorites, these are not mine. The first set was great, the second set was good, the encore was the peak. Thats all I was trying to say.
Please don't take stuff so personally, its all opinion!
love and peace to one and all even if you disagree with everything I say or write!
sorry if It sounded harsh....i love you

BTW any contradictions or weirdness may be due to extreme irieness.
just like it says at the grey area:please excuse our short term memory loss
cloudcloudcloudcloud floating towards boston....
Just another point of view,
I made St Louis and DC, (missed Alpine). Two very different shows. but both were a blast. Deer Creek is definitely the best scene I've ever been to. Shakedown is not only allowed, but encouraged with clean up crews coming by about every 15 minutes, and security so laidback that they walked right by the balloon line. If you've ever made it to the creek you know what I'm talking about, if not, make sure you make it next year (we all hope).
The set list was a bit disappointing especially after last years bomb but the show had incredible energy, start to finish. The only real "complaints" I can muster are on 1000 stars and Only the Strange. I really like 1000 stars, but the song just didn't seem to fit in right and I'm sorry but Only the "Silly" Remain (as some else said) killed the second set.
Deep Elem and High Time definitely were the highlights of the show for me. And even though LSD, GDTRFB, Sug Mag all had good energy, I couldn't quite recover from the Strange/Space "jam" chaos.
All in all a fun show, great energy, great crowd. There "ain't no place I'de rather be..." even though I'm from Tennessee. But, if I could play Jerry I would take the St Louis show @ Deer Creek for the wining combo...
peace
Great Frickin Reviewing here at Philzone.com..
It is what got me hooked on this board..Can't imagine better writing anywhere TIME, Newsweek..Rolling Stone, Spin, Spun... nowhereze do ya get them kinda nuances..
Good stuff people..thanks a lot..
How bout High Time..done here at Chula Vista outta space..as encore in Indiana...Wow..
Remember when they broke out that kinda material. back in 69-70 and how good it made me feel then and how even more so now..
So let me get this straight.
I shouldn't post any comments about a show unless I was there? That's what your saying?
How about if I pepper each post with a happy, happy
joy, joy sort of tone.
Would that make it o.k.?
hey dave, you threw the first punch.
I promise to never use the "P" word against you
as long as you don't tell me to "say my piece and get out".
hard to harbor any negative feelings after the blessing's from this past weekend. heck I think I'm gonna take a chance at getting newtered and make it to blossom for the phatty DARK STAR !!!!
first report, i don't think the laker-stealie shirt got any air time. it was sweatshirt weather all weekend long!
as for the scene....great shakedown in the lot, cool scene as ususal at the creek, and a nice show overall.
the show did have some peaks and valleys for me, i thought that alpine was better all around the night before. (with the exception of the vendors in the lot)
did anyone else see rupert from survivor?
You know.....have not been to a show this tour. I really miss the band and this line up. But the next best thing to being there or hearing a stream with my morning coffee is reading all the reviews and the stories.
Thanx for all your efforts in keeping me and rest of us up to date.
you guys rock.
Thanx again
and one last thing
Adios amigos
Yea I saw Rupert. He was about 10 rows in front of me until he kept getting hounded and they walked him up to the front row. I think by the 2nd set he was standing on the side of the stage.
Well Its Tuesday Morning...reading the reviews from the weekend shows...I agree with some....I disagree with others....First I can say I was at Alpine and Deer Creek....at DC had front row...danced the night away right in front of Bobby and Warren....and Yes Notty, Rupert was there and had buttons that said Rupert for President 04...stood next to him for the first set and he went up onto the corner of the stage for the second...cool dude...Second I read from one post it seemed like the guys were fighting to be louder than each other and the mix was bad...well I wouldnt say they were fighting each other....but they did have some issues with the mix..Phil was upset more than once...and Bobby had his earpiece off after they replaced it 5 times but I wouldnt say that they where fighting to be louder than each other...thats a sad statement...Jimmy and Warren wailed...no doubt about it. I dont care if the set list had St Stephen...William Tell....or Night of a 1000 Stars and Only the Strange Remain...the Fact is That band rocks...they thump and they can explode on stage like I havent seen in years... Alpine was a great show...awesome second set...Dammm...great stuff...Deer Creek was shorter and by some standards not a typical set list...but from where I was sitting...a damm fine show...even with the technical problems...Alpine had no Shakedown....Deer Creek was a party in the lot...Just my 2 cents....also just wanted to add got a great vibe Sunday night from camping at Dead Creek Camp...good time...good people...
See you next time around
>>>>>So let me get this straight.

Funny, it's just like I never left......
BTW, if, and I said IF, you should see me in the lot this weekend, please pretend you didn't & keep walking, unless you're Pukewedan, Bosphan, Cryp, Keyshawn, Fritz, Sideshow or Jody & Mrs Coffee.
Like we might go.....
Then again, why else would I be wasting my time up here checking out reviews?
Me an Brain headed out for this one and were glad that the expected rain held off. We arrived at the Dead Creek campground at about 3:00 and hooked up with some cool folks Brain knew. Great bunch of people and now I know them too.
We ended up nabbing a couple lawn seats for $35 and $30 from folks driving into the lot, so we were in. We entered right after Warren's set and headed to the top of the hill to find the Zoners. No zoners there, but I did meet one on the way in. I forget who it was. She said he doesn't post much, but she recognized me (scary!) and we got to say hi. That's always cool. Also ran into nairfoxob near the taper section. She's at lots of stuff I go to and it was nice to say hi there too. Brain wasn't taping, so we grabbed a spot on the lawn about halfway up, a little right of center.
Golden Road, Cold Rain & Snow > Bertha
This portion of set 1 was ok, and I was groovin until You Remind Me > Liberty. This seemed to be a pattern for the night. They would get me interested and tuned in, then they would drop me hard with a crappy tune. Box Of Rain was next and was the highlight of my first set. Phil nailed it. They finished with Cumberland Blues and that wasn't good or bad, just typical.
We walked around a bit between sets. The place was pretty darned full. It was really hard to get anywhere on the lawn.
Then they come back out and they dedicate the next song to Linda Ronstadt. I thought that was cool and was waiting to see what tasty nugget they were gonna come out with.
DESPERFUCKINGRADO? WTF, yo?
This was what I call a Warren jerk-off song. It's only there to showcase Warren's singing. Yeah, I know he can sing. Everbody knows he can sing, but songs like this have him up front and The Dead just backing him. No magic, no bombs, just Warren. yay. Some people dig it, but I was there to see The Dead, not The Warren Haynes Band.
Jack Straw > Night Of 1000 Stars, Deep Elem Blues, Only The Strange Remain was pretty good. Bobby played acoustic on the Deep Elm and even the Only the Starnge Remain was good, except for the parts where Mickey sang.
Space/Drums - The space was very spacey and typical. The drums were off the hook. Mickey and Bill both kicked some serious ass. I normally don't care much about drums, but this one was hot.
They exited Drums right into Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds and it was another Warren Jerk-off song. Total buzz kill with the band not doing much with Warren singing away. Blah!
GDTRFB> Sugar Magnolia > Sunshine Daydream was all pretty good. Got the energy back up, but my expectations of a big 2nd set epic tune like Dark Star, Wharf Rat, Other One, Terrapin, etc, vanished when the donor rap started. What a rip!
High Time was really good. Could have ended up a Warren Jerk-off song, but the band jammed this tune hard. Bob's kid came out and that was cool. Made me miss my kids at home. They ended it with a We Bid You good Night and that was it.
The whole show had decent sound with one exception. I COULDN'T HEAR PHIL! He got lost in all the big guitars. I appreciated the few times when Phil could shine through, but all in all, I was left wanting more.
We went back to camp and drank a whole lot.
Also forgot, I ran into Less Than at the Mule van. I need a job like his!
LT is everywhere !!
I`d love his job to.
>>deer creek fell on day 3, end of weekend kind of show, which is why it was mellow. if you were trying to shoot your wad at the creek show you may have had a rough time. remember, timing is everything !!!!
Nice try, but off the mark. Were you even at Deer Creek? Smokin'!!!!
Review to come. Thanks for a real good time!
JBH
Hi everybody.
The reason they played Desporado was because that was the song she dedicated to Mike Moore (911 movie) .After her fans started booring her and tearing down her posters she was escorted out of Alladin Casino and was told that she was not welcome to come back.
Dave
>>The reason they played Desporado ...
I think most people know WHY they played it, but they could have dedicated one of their songs instead of playing the same sappy crap that she sings at her shows.
i'm up to "Liberty" so far this first set sounds killer, sounds like there getting tighter every show.
"what I call a Warren jerk-off song"
NOBODY can summarize the issue like kook!
>>>>> if, and I said IF, you should see me in the lot this weekend, please pretend you didn't & keep walking, unless you're Pukewedan, Bosphan, Cryp, Keyshawn, Fritz, Sideshow or Jody & Mrs Coffee.
Well, hey, man, I'd even offer you my extra seat FRONT ROW DEAD CENTER Friday night Mansfield but if they play Stella Blew and you started Booing them, then what kind of a "kind" fan would I be????
>>>>Nice try, but off the mark. Were you even at Deer Creek? Smokin'!!!! <<<<<<
yes, that was me leaning on the stage all 3 nites. I was next to the surviver dude at the creek.
this isn't a review but have to admit that the band was definately on despite the face value of the setlist. was in section c about 10 rows back. i got down pretty hard and really enjoyed this show. haven't been that into this band (too or dead)but this lineup is the one. they were on fire. haven't felt that good since p&f in '01
777 got it on the deep elem Chimenti attack- jaw dropping
did anyone think phil also changed the cr&s lyrics to
married me a wife-been the love of my life?
"I loved her half my life" is what he sang.
Well pholks...not all is well in Indy...after three days of thinking about this show I think its finally time to add my $.02...Had a blast in The Lot...then i went in...
We made it in late so I didn't get to hook-up with any Zoners and for that I'm sorry, it woulda made the day alot better...
I'll keep this short...The show bombed...they caught the spark a coupla times but went nowhere with it...the 1st set was pretty good...especially the opening Golden Road>C.R.Snow>Bertha...The Box was also nice...most people on the Jerry side didn't get to see the best moment of the show...just as Phil sang the 'Splintered Sunlight' line the sun broke beneath the clouds on the Phil side like Phil had planned it that way, awesome...after that it went all downhill..the Deep Elem was a nice steamy swampified version and was fun...but other than that...Drums was nice...We left before the encore...thats the first time i've ever left a GD or GD family show before the encore...we were pretty disappointed...No Terrapin, No Playin', No Dark Star, nothin'...they had all these big songs they hadn't busted out on the second leg and they just left them packed away...
It was the worst GD or GD family show I've ever seen at Deer Creek...
Gone are the days, when a show at The Creek meant Somethin'!!!
I can't believe I paid $50(46.95+tax) to see this show!!!!
This show wasn't in the same league with the PLQ shows I saw @ the Warfield last year...The worst family show I've seen since Jerry left us...totally 100% disappointed, especially after hearing everyone rave about the first leg...I don't know...
One thing is for sure:
I'm stickin' to the 'Q' from now on...
p.s...I don't like to pay fifty bucks to hear FUCKIN' Eagles tunes performed at Dead shows, i don't care who got their fat-ass thrown out of a Casino, I hate the Fuckin' Eagles, man!!!
That's funny, cuz I thought this was the BEST post GD experience I've heard. I liked songs that I normally wouldn't (Strange Remain, 1K stars, even the Desparado). It was played that well, imo. To each his own I guess...
st. knick, i think you are a little heavy man.
this line up dwarfs any other one they have put on the stage to this point. the addition of Warren is huge!
check out another show before you bury these guys. maybe it was just a let down with the set list or something. the music is really coming around now.
i agree that the show had its peaks and valleys but the alpine show the night before was rockin' the whole way through.
sorry you missed it st. nick but it was good for me.
i had a good time for sure , but the show was just boring to me
drums were good though
stknick...you left before the encore?...i'll admit this show was not my fav(i've seen 4-alpine through blossom) but...missing THIS encore(HIGHTIME>bid you...) was a HUGE mistake(IMO)...it was fuckin out of hand...i mean, HIGHTIME? only the 2nd time since whenever GD played it last, and then add a BYGN...blew my mind...you should have stuck around
sorry, but after 20+ PLQ and Core 4 shows in the last 3 years, this was by far the worst...but like i said to my roomie after the show:
A bad day of The Dead beats a good day doin' anythin' else!!!
Im sorry I missed it!!! anytime the Dead family comes to Indy is sure to be a good show I don't care who you are! they love to play here and if you did'nt like it thats your own fault!!!
do yourselfs a favor and enjoy what you do see It might be your last time! {anyone remember seeing Jerry play here?}
Rick
