Tommorow is my first show of the tour. I can't fucking wait. I'm bringing my kids and it will be my son's first show.
What do you think they'll play?
drums & space, for sure!
At this point Andre, who can say...lol. Maybe they will do I nice Dark Star>Britney Spears "Im not so innocent">The Other One>Viola Lee>Eyes of the World>Eye of the Tiger>"Im not so innocent" reprise> Dark Star.....lol.
Relax people, im just kidding....
the Star is coming soon, this could be the one.
St. Stephen, Scarlet/Fire, Good Lovin'? Given today's Great Lakes weather, all rain-related songs are fair game. Like my brother once said, "There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes."
Yep, it sure is rainy. It's stopped for now though; I hope it holds off until after the show, some rain songs would be nice. Especially "Rain."

Just got back from the show...thought I'd write a blurb before getting some sleep...driving to Blossom early.
First of all, if all they'd played tonight was Sittin' and Pride, I would have walked away a happy man. I felt that everything they played, they played incredibly well. The first set was dynamite all the way through Iko. That song is always a blast. If that were the only song Mickey ever sang, I wouldn't mind him singing every night. Hell...even if I sang it it'd still be fun. The highlight for me (as it will probably be for many) was Sittin'. Didn't expect it...was blown away by it.
As for the second set...I thought the Peggy-o FOTD segue was both flawless and seamless and some nice slide work by Warren. Solid enough Tons, and once again I was blown away when they broke out Pride. Outstanding instrumentals.
Post Space Days Between, although played nicely, was like popping a balloon. Sorry, but the song just brings me down. They picked it back up again with the remaining tunes, and the energy was back, but I saw the TS>NFA Enc: JBG too many times back in the 80s. That being said, Those final songs did rock tonight!!! and I enjoyed the hell out of this show. Looking forward to Blossom tomorrow. Seeeeya there front and center!!
Great songs how was the energy?
How was the Broken Arrow? I like that tune. Also was there any jam to NFA ?or just standard? same question for estimated.
anyone who was there notice?
see you kids in boston DC rocked!
Just got back.
Super high energy. An excelent show. I was/am completely blown away.
Weird cop issues in the lot though. While buying some beer next to Shakedown, I'm standing there and about 8 mounted cops from the sherrif's dept. come down the center of Shakedown followed by two rows of cops on foot. They were breaking everything up and flipping out. Then a couple couldn't control their horses and things got even weirder. People said they'd been shocking (tazing??) dog in the lot too. Very Orwelean.
The Playin' opener was amazing. Really spacey towards the end, but then no reprise. By the end, my son was asleep and he slept until we were walking out.
8 Miles High was cool. I've always liked this song, but the Byrds could never do it like this. Nearly 40 years and still the most inventive, creative, crazy muther fuckers out there. I was hoping to hear this and was glad I got to see this version.
I thought SOTOTW was a bit short, but the Althea was great as was Rolling Stone, Built to Last, and Foolish Heart. I've alaways liked Broken Arroqw too and it was a solid version. As we pulled into the lot we were listening to Althea from "Go to Nassau." We turned off the car and heard them sound checking it. It was a really weird coincidence. And the crowd really got into Ramble on Rose.
Iko was great. It's my daughter's favorite song and she's been saying they would play it for weeks. (she's 5 and it was her first show). I kept saying that they don't play it all the time and she shouldn't get too upset if they don't play it. During the opening beats, she looked like she would burst, she was so excited.
Travis is right on. The segue from Peggy-o > FOTD was great; as if they'd been doing it for 30 years like China>Rider or something.
Tons was cool, but a bit quick. They didn't play the end (I'm gonna go down slow). I haven't noticed, but maybe they never do this part. If they do, it was the second "unfinished" song of the night if you also consider the lack of the Playin' reprise. Maybe we'll get the reprises tomorrow.
Phil and Warren led a really heavy jam towards the end of Pride, it was crazy.
Another highlight was the jam into drms. Jeff stayed out with Billy and Mickey for a few minutes and it was amazing. As he left, people were cheeing him like he had played Touch or Truckin'. It was great.
I also agree with Traviv' point about Days; it was the slowest I've ever heard, but beautiful. A guy behind me said, "Is this still the same song." I think he was refering to Pride. I remember having the same thoughts at my first show.
The Throwin>NFA was also really strong. These are my kids' other two favorites and for them to get all three in one show was incredible. I certainly didn't have that kind of luck at my first show where the only songs I knew were Truckin and Lovelight.
No one was slackin gat this show. Each of them had their high points. Jimmy was amazing but a little low in the mix. Phil was all over the place. Jeff was great, had some awesome stuff. I've always wondered if he was the right choice over Rob, but he certainly fills the role nicely. Bobby's vocals were strong all night as were Warren's and Mickey and Billey were having a great time smiling all night.
I know this sounds a bit slanted, but I really liked this show. LAst year I only saw one (Columbus) and was really let down. This was the best show I've seen in years. I am just so fucking excited for tomorrow night.
I'm off to bed before the drive to Cleveland tomorrow.
Question..I saw The Dead do "SOTOTW"..But don;t remember who sang lead parts..???
Question..Did Phil sing "Like A Rolling Stone"..??
That 60th Bday show from Kaiser opened show with it.Man his voice sounded good that night..
Thanks
Warren sings SOTOTM
Phil sang Rolling Stone and his voice was on last night. Broken Arrow and Pride sounded great too.
>>>During the opening beats, she looked like she would burst, she was so excited.
Thats awesome! Put a smile on my face this morn.
Can't wait for Blossom tonight! Just a couple of hours!
You know G.dad...I was at that phil birthday gig and yes phil was so happy to be alive it all sounded great.
P.S. Travis review is pretty much the point I was making this morning on the chat. Never said the show was bad just the post drumz song selection was a blast from the 80's. It was Dejavu all over again and again.
Bob played a few notes of Weather Report, then they went into Days Between. Big letdown for me. Otherwise, the show was really very good. I wish I could see more than just this one.
Any of the east coast shows being streamed? The set lists for them look incredible and after reading some of the comments I am curious to listen to the shows if they are available. Who cares if the sound quality isn't there.
>>>>Question..I saw The Dead do "SOTOTW"..But don;t remember who sang lead parts..???
Jerry did.
Warren does.
Nice review Andre -- I'm in full agreement. I most enjoyed the Playin'>8 Miles High>Sittin'. That blew me away. If you were on the hill last night (the band dedicated the first set to us, BTW), you can appreciate the second verse to 8 Miles High:
Nowhere is there warmth to be found
Among those afraid of losing their ground
Rain gray town, known for its sound
In places, small faces unbound
Thanks for the excellent reviews folks!!!!! Sounds like yet, another GREAT show!
PRIDE OF CUCAMONGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just checked in to my hotel in Cuyahoga Falls. Far later than expected due to a 5am bout of food poison...curse those post show munchies and poor refridgeration! Was a tad concerned that I might not make it to Ohio, but seem to have made a complete recovery, and am getting increasingly geared up for this evening. I'm front row center this evening so I'd have to be in traction, on my deathbed to miss this one!
Had the 3 hour drive to ponder last night's show. Probably best that I made the drive alone, as I couldn't stop singing Sittin' and Pride all the way. I have to second Kevin's,
>>>PRIDE OF CUCAMONGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A highlight of my Head carreer. Never thought I'd hear it, and it faaaaar exceeded my expectations once I did!
I thought Phil was in fine voice last night on both Pride and Rolling Stone. One thing I noticed out at The Gorge, is that the harmonies were dynamite and last night reinforced that. This is a top notch incarnation, and I hope they leave it as such from here on out. Warren brings so much to the group with his playing, singing and attitude. Cheers to them all!
To add to Andre's post, I also noted the 8 horsemen of the apocolypse around shakedown. I was parked nearby, and saw them being pricks. It was surely unecessary, and then they all stood in line on the high ground looking intimidating. On the other hand I didn't see anybody getting hassled for wandering around the parking lot with open containers, and everybody was wandering around with open containers. IMO The cops should just be there to break up any unfortunate problems within the crowd, rather than impose their will upon the crowd, thereby creating problems.
That's it until tonight. Hopefully I'll get in a quick review after the show. One final note: thus far after 4 shows on this leg, not one song has been repeated yet, and if that holds true this evening...what possibilities!
Thanks
Just got back from the show. Great show! Sorry, I can't say the same for Detroit. That venue sucked. It was the best show out of the 3 I saw (San Diego, Irvine, Michigan).
I'd love to head home for those East Coast shows!
Hey now, scene sucked here everyone got shut down everyone. You had to keep your eyes peeled to even hang behind your car here... Show was killa...I got stubbed down for 1st set and was I psyched!!! Playin to open was cool as heck, 8 miles High I loved hearing and it's momentum built into a very hot Sittin' this tune lit the plac eup as it was played pretty quick and was thumping. The rest of set one was tops in my book. I loved every second of it . Set 2 highlights for me was all of it. All of it! Estimated...yea....Don't worry about me..NO!!! Pride was great to hear. Days Between was nice, as was Throwing NFA. I'll post pictures from here later this weekend, I took many during the first set.
HOLY PRIDE O CUCAMONGA,best way I can sum it up ! What a gas Pine Knob was. Went with no tix in hand, knowing full well that I could at least score a lawn ticket. With the rain coming down,we went to the box office to see about scoring some pavillion seats. Ended up in the 13th row stage right, but moved around plenty, sat in the center section for a lot of the show too, plenty of empty seats around !
The entire first set was stellar from start to finish ! Loved 8 Miles High and Sittin, they were both spot on ! Bob deadicated the rest of the first set to the folks on the lawn in the rain, after they finished Sittin On Top Of The World. Broken Arrow was perfect, the first of three Phil gems this night. Energy was high, and songs were all very well played. Every time I thought that we were getting close to the end of the set they would go into another tune. My buddies and I were wondering how they were gonna top that one. Peggy-O was way too mellow a tune to open the 2nd set with IMO,but it was nice enough, was just personally hoping for more of a rockin type tune to open it. FOTD was really nicely played, but the double whammy of Tons Of Steel and Pride of Cucamonga blew me away ! I swear at one point I shut my eyes and Warren sounded like Brent when singing Tons, maybe he was channeling him ? LOL ! Without a doubt the tune was a nod to Brents passing 14 years ago. I think even the naysayers would have liked this version of Tons Of Steel. Right on into PRIDE OF CUCAMONGA baby ! Wow did that surprize me,the tune never crossed my mind prior to the show. Made my night in a big way !Estimated got pretty spacey, and was very nicely played. Drums was great too,I was back down under the pavillion at this point, and really enjoyed the drums portion of things up close. Days Between def. let the air out of the balloon as was said above, that tune just does not cut it for me. I know others love it,but for me it was the only low point in the show. Throwing Stones was very well played, but coulda also done without the dreaded pairing of NFA that they beat into the ground in the mid 80's. One or the other, but not both together,I got very sick of that pairing in the end too ! Johnny B.Goode was rocking, but I was hoping for the double encore at that point, something more poigniant like the Brokedown you Cleveland folks got,or Angel Band woulda been nice too. All in all I was one happy guy at the end of the show ! Go see this band !
Detroit 7/27
I:
Playin' -
8 Miles High - I have to say I was surprised they hit it as well as they did. The addition of Warren really pays off here.
Sittin' on Top of the World - Warren nails it.
Kick ass way to open. Not to much exploration, but very sweet none the less. Good harmonies, focused playin', tons of fun!
Broken Arrow - Phil's voice was in fine form this evening
Ramble on Rose - Straight forward, well played.
Built to Last - Love the variety
Althea - Jimmy is the man
Like a Rollin' Stone - Pefect selection for this band.
Foolish Heart - Jimmy is the man
IKO - I don't even mind Mickey singing this one.
10 song 1st set went for over an hour and 1/2. All well played. This band kicks ass.
II:
Peggy-O - Bob on Acoustic
FOTD - Bob on acoustic
Tons of Steel - Warren pays off big time on vocals. Great lineup change.
Pride of Cucamonga - WOW! Smokin' Pride. I was running up and down the isle. Place was rockin'
Estimated - Real nice spacey jam. Very well played.
D/S
Days Between - Only let down of the day. Warren struggled with it (As I thought he did on China Doll in Cleveland) I preferred Joan's version.
Throwin'
NFA - Nice fun way to finish.
E: Johnny B. Goode - Thought they could have went a little longer on it but it was nice and rockin'
Hard rain all day and night. Bobby dedicated the show to "all those up in the rain and mud" after Sittin'. Cops were total dicks. Busted up the shakedown @ 5:00 just as things started happening. Rude and inconsiderate, completely unnecessary. Had thought I'll never go back, but the band made it all worthwhile. First set was better than I hoped for. Second set was good, clean fun. Come on, Phil sing Pride of Cucamonga in a downpour in 2004? It just doesn't get any better than that!!!
Ok... my brother clayton and I hit pine knob and blossom. This was his first dead show and only his 2nd dead related show(1st was PLQ in 99). To say the least he was jazzed about it. Lot was crap, I hate the pine knob but it's only 4hrs away so what are ya gonna do. blossom shakedown made up for it in a big way. Missed the playin opener, I even asked some dude when we got our spots on the lawn if they just started when they were playin 8 miles high and he said yeah! That would have cleared up my confusion with the playin reprise in cleveland. first set was great, energy building up the whole time, dancin in the rain.2nd set highs were definetely pride, estimated> Drums. Space was only like 2 minutes so it was more like a jam. Bobby changed lyrics in throwin stones: "steal that oil, start a war today". Overall a very tight show. no flubs at all. smoth transitions, everyone taking their turn at the helm. What better way to spend a july evening.
Hadn't been here in 20 years and 27 days, and what a difference that makes. However, in a lot of ways it was like going back in time. I couldn't stop moving, except for during Days Between, and forgive me, but I've never liked that song. Reminds me of Jerry singing it, as if he was looking back with sad recollections on his life. Then again, I don't know all the words, it's just how the song hits me.
Playin' opener was very nice, even if at a tempo slower than back in the day. Sittin' on top of the World is so great to hear, and I'll never figure why the Dead shelved it so long ago, as on this night it got the crowd moving. Althea was sweet, Phil sounded very good on Broken Arrow, Ramble on Rose was fantastic with Bobby and Warren trading verses, Like a Rolling Stone was, personally, very emotional, and while they turned in a wonderful version, anyone who can play or sing this song would be hard pressed to do it bad, as it's such a meaningful song. Wasn't sure if Iko would be that or Man Smart, but once we knew, it was a rollicking exchange of Hey Now, and the crowd got very involved.
Second set with Fennario and FOTD accoustic was very nice. Interesting how the Dead start many second sets with traditionally slower numbers, befitting an accoustic treatment, whereas GD would almost always resume with something upbeat.
Tons of Steel was fantastic, and personally, that's one of Brent's greatest contributions to the Dead's catalog. Next my friend, whom I went to my first show with, listening intently to the jam they were engaged in looked at me and said Smokestack, with me immediately saying Wang Dang, and finally I looked at him with a grin beaming when I realized it was Pride of Cucamonga....and the place went nuts. When I followed the Dead I never figured I'd ever hear this, and what a treat. I hope Phil likes doing this, because we sure like hearing it. Estimated followed, with Bobby doing a much restrained version of his crow caw reminiscent of 20 years ago, which we suspect was restrained because I bet he can still hit it like he did, but as with the Dead in general, it's not to replicate days of old, but to show this is obviously a new band, playing a lot of old songs in new ways. Excellent drums and space, Days Between...like I said above, into Throwin Stones which has never been more relevant, into Not Fade, which I'll just say were two songs I'd tired of years ago, despite what Not Fade means in the scope of GD lore, but on this night I was diggin' every note, and something I don't remember at the conclusion of every Not Fade I've ever heard, the crowd chanted 'know our love will not fade away' and the five beat clapping until Phil came on for his donor rap. One reviewer here said they'd wished Johnny B. Goode could have gone a little longer, but here's the deal from a friend who works at Pine Knob....some venues, especially those witing close proximity to residential areas, have a curfew of 11p.m. To go past 11 is possible at $1,000/minute. So whenn I've read of people thinking it's not loud enough on the lawn at Shoreline, that's why, as Shoreline has a real problem with this due to the atmosphere, and how sound waves bounce off an inversion layer and carry right over to the surrounding communities. So it's not the Dead's decision to not play longer, because even if they wanted to cough up the extra 1k a minute, they can't play past 11:15 no matter what at places like Pine Knob.
To the Dead.....nice show, Keep it up, as you know our love will not fade away.
Anybody else get caught in the miserable traffic going north from Ohio to the venue? Besides the traffic, rain and mean pigs, the show was pretty good. It far exceeded my expectations. Every time a new lineup is put together I get leery. I hope they can keep this version of The Dead together for a good stretch. I drove four hours from Gary, In to Toledo and then sat in traffic another 2+ hours going from Toledo to the-venue-formerly-known-as-pine-knob. I was completely drained and in a shitty mood, but then I found my seat for the show and the music fixed my head. Pretty outstanding. Also, weren't there some big Moon Dance teases going into Pride? Was I just hearing things?
Kass,
I heard Smokestack and Wang Dang going into Pride.
Hmmmmm . . . Will have to listen to the show to hear what was going on there before Pride.
Show of the tour imo. Nuff said.
Tons > Moondance Tease > Pride
