If they intend to play "Shakedown" at Camden/Philly, they are "on schedule" to play it at SPAC.

"He's Gone" is almost too obvious given the date. I'd take it if I was going to be there though; same with "Morning Dew".

Have they played play "NFA" without "Throwing Stones" yet?
Not that I have anything against the pairing, but they are mixing some stuff up occasionally. (07/30/04 excepted)

Having seen over 150 GD shows (w/Jerry), only 12 or so post Jerry, I only wish I could walk into SPAC tonight without any preconceived notions or expectations. That being said I'll do my best to attend with an open mind and happy hopeful feet. Warren and Jimmy bring a lot to the table and add much energy to the remaining four, the boys are blessed to have found these two guys. After seeing the set list from Friday I'm scratching my head as to what they'll play, so much for the open mind thing, although I'm sure they'll come up with something. Anyway, I look forward to a great show, as every show is great....if you look at it right. Happy Bithday Jerry.. I miss you.

I bet opening both sets with "uncle" songs was their nod to Jerry's birthday. Come to think of it that
Me & My Uncle
Cryptical
Death Don't Have No Mercy

Had to be a planned tribute

I bet this was one of if not the best shows of the tour so far.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Chuck Reed (Chuckster) on Monday, August 02, 2004 - 03:17 am: Edit Post

Just got in from the show-how great when it's in your hometown and knowing the back roads get you around the jammed-up head traffic...

1st things 1st: Happy B'day Jerome John Garcia

I don't post often, but brief GD bio is 100+ (GD and all other solo/post GD incarnations plus ABB-back to '81/Gov't Mule) shows going back to all SPAC GD shows-83-85; 88.

so they love this town/venue enough to keep coming back (when the powers that be can't afford [$] NOT to keep them out ) and now the latest chapter is 8/1/04, JG B'day...

Secondly: to Hell with all the Phil/PLQ v. Bobby/Ratdog nonsense; it really is all so f#*king very lame...

Tonight's show delivered the goods. While not sure of the encore, it certainly was NOT Samson and/or the Same Thing, but yes something sung by Warren..and after the "Angel Band" bluegrass/spiritual tagged-onto the end of 2nd set and obviously totally for Jerry's first musical love, they could've and maybe even been better served not doing an encoe proper.

UJB was great opener
LRR nicely done, nice trade-off on the vocals
EP-(introduced w/the dedication by Phil) took a bit to jump start as I've heard better versions, but the outro and subsequent jam indicated good things to come...

out of this was a quasi-"Other One Jam" but I never sensed they we're actually on that musical track. Phil seemed to want to do something heavy and was really nodding his head and his bass really hard-he was into this show from the get-go and tonight he was in full effect throughout; this was a steller night for all the (pro) Phil Phans! I love Phil bombs as much as anyone!

NMDI-this was pretty much just filler for me...

Then they gave Mickey his turn and it was appropriately filled with the Garcia (and Lennon, Kennedy et al) ode Down the Road, with Mickey staring long and straight-up through the roof and into the heavens' with a huge smile for his brother. It was Mickey rapping but everyone at least tolerated it/enjoyed it if for nothing else than for Jerry's sake...you gotta respect the brotherhood of Mick/Jerry.

MNS-good closer with the new twists and fit in thematically with the night.

Overall, a brief 55+ minute 1st set; 7/10 in my book. Some sound problems-Jimmy was barely/not audible and you could see he was jamming (I was in the 11th row), but I've come to expect that over the years. UJB opener was THE highlight for me.

I'm so tired I'll have to follow-up tomorrow with the 2nd Set. It WAS a monster. Surprised to get the "St. Stephen" again, but I'm sure it made a lot of people's tour and I'm kinda glad they didn't do WT Bridge/The Eleven, if that makes sense. Nice to get "Crytical/Quadlibet for Tenderfeet". "Death" was incindiery (spelling- God I'm tired). Birsong, of course now serves as Phil's ode to his brother. No longer "snow and rain" but now 'stolen rain'. Everything else really fine, fine, fine. I was made with "Comes a Time". "Drums" short-only like 11 minutes but WOW was it power-packed! (This is out of sequence of course but merely off the top of my head...) "Reuben" was sweeeet with a wonderful jam leading into Drums...no real "Space" to speak of but interesting Mickey on the beam/Jimmy exchange
..."Shine On", interesting to this non-PF fan, but it was well played, I liked it and again, something that fit in thematically. "Other One" (the rounder we get) one of the best I've ever heard. Phil was on, on, on. Nice serving Phil Bomb. GDTRFB, lively and high/postive energy. Great outro and then the bluegrass/spritual song which was truly unique and beautiful. Phil with a nice rap to the audience: "you give us the vibe...dig yourself" then the donor rap, another headcount mention, with "maintaing our free repubilc' and avioding the very real/scary potential for an oligarchy, then the encore, after which they all hugged and took a bow, and Mickey instructed us to take the good inside feeling we were experiencing and bringing them beyond the show and doing something good with them.

I'm surprised clear channel won't shut the boys out for all the politically-natured comments.

There. How's that, everyone?

Just back from SPAC. This seemed to me to be Warren's night. And yes Phil was practically dancing during the first set. If he had long hair it would have been flying around. I don't think I've ever seen him so pumped up. Someone called UJB and it was good call. First set highlights..UJB, Estimated, Music. Warren had great solos during the first set and yes Jimmy appeared to be jamming along but its hard to pick him up at times. He seems turned down a lot. Me+My uncle was cool. Bob started it up and while it was going through the first minute everyone else except Phil, Mickey, Bill were walking around getting their guitars ready and stuff. It was kind of funny but as the song went on they strapped em on and everyone made their way into the song. Real cool. Anyways the highlight of the night for me was DDHNM. A couple of us thought that it must have been for Jerry and Warren blew me away. Easily the highlight of the night and after Warren's guitar solos in the first set, I felt that this was his night while Saturday was kind of Bob's. Phil did great Birdsong and Reuben+Cherise was cool. After d/s, Warren kept it up with great versions of Shine on you and Comes a time. The Other One was good but was kinda short but GDTRFB rocked. The Real Thing was a great encore. I have never heard it live but I liked it and it would be nice to see placed somewhere maybe in the first set. Great show though security inside was tight as a drum.....peace.

Just got in from SPAC. What a show. Definitely some interesting song selections.

A great tribute to Jerry tonight. From the Patchwork in Warren's set to the GDTRFB in the second set. They pretty much did everything but sing Happy Birthday!

DDHNM and Comes a time were real high points. Reuben and Cherise was real nice too.

Me & My Uncle was a little strange. Bobby Seemed in a hurry to get the set rolling. Phil never got out until the start of Cryptical.

And I agree on the security. They were all over our section down front.

Time for some sleep and get ready for Hartford!!

Just got back from the show. Almost didn't get in, but I took in just enough selling grilled cheeses to buy my ticket from the box office at 7:30. No way in hell I'm missing Jerry's birthday show...especially when I heard that they didn't play eyes the night before.

UJB was a perfect way to open it. Heartwarming smiles everywhere. I was late to Jerriweather the last time I was at a show and they opened with it, so I made up for lost time (where does it go!) by pickin' up my heels and gettin' down. I do miss the way rob lays it down on this one, but Jeff held his own. Lazy river was a welcome breather...love hearing Phil sing, and we heard him a bunch tonight. Estimated started off a little weak...it definately didn't get going until a few minutes into it. Bobby sang it with a passion though, and it was nice to think about the burning shore of california as the sun set on the horizon. My lord, the O1 jam that followed was intense. The energy on my part of the lawn was fantastic...everyone was moving around, bouncing from one empty space to the next. Spinning and twirling, hopping and skipping. I was just waiting for Phil to drop the big roll-in, especially after the lift off he gave us out in Irvine during the first set 01 (which didn't translate onto the tape I heard). Instead, they fell into No More Do I. I could tell this was coming at some point by the tuning/fooling around they did when they first took the stage. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love this song. Powerful, powerful lyrics that I've felt resonate inside of me ever since the NYE show back in 01/02. Some rippin' guitar work at the end, I assume by Warren, but I wasn't really paying attention to the players on the stage. Down the road again....I knew it was a mickey song right from the get go, but I couldn't remember the name until the chorus. As much as mickey songs have grown on me this summer, I went to refill my water as soon as I realized exactly which song it was. I was stuck in the line to the fountain when TMNS started. Energy and sound was kinda diffused back behind the treeline, but there were a couple of us who kept on dancing, even if we were stuck in a line. Got back to my spot just in time to hear bobby wail, Neeeeeevvvver stopped, neverrr stopppped, oh no......

My dancing partner on the lawn turned to me after bobby's headcount speech and asked with a confused look on her face, "so the band is having some sort of meet and greet by the gate?"
I guess Bobby knew he wasn't too clear the first time and we got a nice little lecture after the second set letting us know that we need to vote if we want to keep our democracy. Phil had a nice Ben Franklin quote too, but I'm ahead of myself.

Second set.....still had my fingers crossed for an eyes, even though it didn't pop up after estimate. Me and my uncle was a crowd pleaser, and bobby sang it with gusto. The crippie lingered a little before Death Don't Have No Mercy was born. First time I've heard it live, and it was a soul-stirrer, that's for sure. My eyes water up a little thinking of last night's bird song. Beautiful jam on the way out into....
Reuben and Cherise. I felt like I was enveloped by light when they started this off, but I had trouble finding the rhythem until the up and down parts. I guess my mind was elsewhere and I was thinking too hard to really find a beat to move to. "You know it's true...." Drums was alright....nothing earth shattering. I guess I was spoiled by the reverberations of red rocks earlier this summer. I was exhausted from mining in herkimer earlier in the morning, so I sat and meditated until I heard Jimmy pop up on my sonar. Nice interplay....I was hoping they'd draw it out a little and really work the beam too, but then I saw everyone else out there. Shine on was a nice way to break through the D/S. A lot of the people around me were scratching their heads until it really started going, and then there were a couple of shocked exclamations from those who hadn't heard bonnaroo. Warren certainly did the song justice, and Jimi shined as well with his flawless fingerwork. I silently wondered if the boys were familiar with the herkimer diamond mines that are about an hour away. St. Stephen was a real shocker. Twice in one weekend? No complaints here :-) I was a little worried that they might run out of steam, like I thought they did out in Shoreline this year, but this tune told me there were a few quarters left in the jukebox. Comes a time, oh lordy! Another heartwarmer. This song fills me up like no other song can. As usualy, the guitars here were on fire. I wish I had my setlist book with me, but all I had to take notes on was my ticket stub. After some reassurance from the CAT, they dropped the 01. Short but sweet. The sheer intensity of the drums was matched by Phil's pleasure to be up there making music with his friends. Bobby was pretty ferocious up there as well. GDTRFB was perfect for the movie that was last night. Warren was belting it out like there was no tommorow, and we were all coming along for the ride. Impossible to feel tired feet when those old men are up there keeping it all hopping. I'm sure that somewhere the water tastes like wine. Perfect seque into angel band. I think they did something similar back in Pittsburgh 02.

Some might have been let down by the encore. When they closed out the Beacon run last year, I was disappointed by the Real Thing encore. No longer. This song has new meaning for me and this was as fine a version as any I've heard. My fingers and toes were crossed in hopes of something else to keep my energy high for the car ride back to NYC. No such luck. Still, I am forever grateful for the magic I experienced last night...even if I didn't get an eyes.

If the pizza delivery guy came to my door & told me to vote out against GWB or whatever, I'd tell him to get lost & call his boss.

Now, if Phil wants to spout off that GWB is satan (whatever), Coimmunuisn is wonderful, or "2012 is coming, get your spacesuits ready", ANNOUNCE it on a ticket & let those interested in seeing & hearing that bullshit go.

Me, if I hear any of that nonsense if & when I'm there, I'll BOO like mad & any rotten tomatoes I haven't already thrown at

I agree with you Bucky and I was a little nervous about the voting rap and a political agenda and while its widely known how some band members feel, they do not say anything more than get out and vote. And since 'The Dead's' demographic is historically 'unlikely' voters then I think its an appropriate reminder.

btw, 2012 is coming Bucky, so you better get your spacesuit ready!

Thanks Baligirl, for pointing out that the band's plea is to vote, and not to vote for anyone in particular. A big difference! The first is political; the latter is patriotic. But some haven't the means to differentiate between the two. This is how Rush and Bill O'Reilly make their living, by blurring the language for those who can't think for themselves. Tomatoes indeed!

I cannot believe that nobody has mentioned the stunning jam out of comes a time. It reached levels I never thought possible again without Jer. I didnt see it coming and it built and built to a crescendo that almost gave me a heart attack. Never thought I would have a heart attack during a ballad. Sheer fucking beauty. Trying to describe it cheapens it so I will stop. Highlight of the night.

To many highlights to mention - 1st set a little lack luster but had many high points. 2nd set totally over the top - Warren is unbelievable... Phil is... what can I say... He was truely into it... you could feel the emotion and the bombs he was droping. This show makes my short short list. The jams were intense...I couldn't have asked for a better set list for the 2nd set. Happy to be livin...near SPAC.

Excuse me but....

Bobby is making a point at every show of implying that if Bush is reelected we will all lose our right to vote. This goes way beyond simply encouraging people to get out and vote and displays a paranoia that he should be ashamed to display. If you're going to get down on Bucky for his comments and slander other folks in the proces Chametzoo, at least get your facts straight. You're as guilty as those you accuse.

Okey dokey...My turn.

Glad I'm typin cause I sure have no voice left for speakin today and for some reason I can't wipe that silly smile off my face ~nor do I want to!. I feel like I hit the lottery.

Holy shit. That's what I have to say. Yooooooooooooowzah!!! What a show. I feel like the luckiest person in the whole wide world. a def home run in my book - on many levels. I coulda died & went to heaven.

Hometown show, gotta love the 20 min drive home once we left the lot (but really, that's only a small part, I woulda & have driven hours & days to see/hear these guys)...

Met a bunch of crazies in the lot - Taperrob, gotta love him hauling all that heavy equip through the muddy lot & blazing heat just to sit & visit for a bit. THANK YOU ROB. I know (well I probably have no clue) just how unassuming & hard you work for all of OUR benefits.

Daydream you nut, (who thinks my husband is a "really good person" cause he brought her back a balloon treat after the show. silly rabbit) :-) Peggyo ~ the Otherone Peggy. Knew I'd love ya, gotta love a gal by the name of Peggy & she's the REAL deal, as I'm just an imposter considering my name is actually Margaret Mary Catherine. (seriously)

Fritz & Carla (the girl w/more clothes in her car than I own in my entire closet) ~ you guys most definitely rock, great company, I thank you very much for your very generous kind hospitality.

Okay, the show...First of all, the world is a beautiful place when you can experience it from t(pardon me in advance) the pit in the FUCKING FIRST ROW!!!!!! That certainly puts a whole different spin on the entire event. PLUS the MIRACLE of DANCIN ROOM up front. Unbelievable.

It was like Christmas. All night long I had to (literally) keep pinching myself, I could not believe how friggin LUCKY I was. Sooooooo, I had the perspective of up close & personal ~ I felt like they were playing to ME (a bit egocentric) WHILE I was able to move & shake & skip and jump & turn & spin & basically dance my ass off into the heat attack zone as MikeW says above, I know EXACTLY what ya mean. Unbelievable.

Got to watch (when I had my eyes opened that is) all the personal goings-on among the guys onstage, got to see the smiles and the giggles and the looks of pure passion & love & intensity planted right on their faces. Unbelievable.

Funny, at the end when they walked offstage, after the donor rap but before the encore...saw Jeff (I think he is really cute btw) go over & give Phil a big ol kiss on the cheek followed by a great big hug, grinning ear to ear...so sweet...then go over to Bobby & kind of twist his nipple then they both totally cracked up & hugged. Guess ya hadda see it, but it was great to watch. Saw the rest of them give each other the high fives as if to say, wow, great fucking show boys after 40 fucking years. AMEN.

Musically, they brought me to my knees and they moved me to tears. I am both blown away & BLESSED by their presence.

I LOVE THESE GUYS.

YIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEE

Well Bobby didnt say anything like that last night. He may have implied that the only way to get Bush out is for everyone to get out and vote but even that is a stretch. He didnt mention Bush's name, or Kerry's once and I doubt that Bobby would be stupid enough to imply "if Bush is reelected we will all lose our right to vote". Thats just assinine. Ill be listening hard at the next 7 shows, because your right if thats what they are saying then that sucks! He did say that if you dont get out and vote we will be in jeopardy of losing the process and therefore the republic that we have created etc. And to some degree I think that is true but in a really macro sense . . .

I agree generally that politics should be left out of the entertainment portion of the show.

Also shared my dancin space w/Tim from Rochester...if you read this, thanks, you helped make it a great show, your energy was contagious.
Fun dancin w/ya. Hope you had a safe trip back home & glad you got that lucky ticket.

Re: Review/Further Impressions of the Dead; SPAC, 8/1/04.

Ok, after some much needed rest and time to gather my impressions:

Certainly there were some surprises re: songs that were seemingly “due up” according to either song-handicapping or thematically. The “Shakedown” called for never materialized, nor did the by now too obvious (Sunday) “Samson”. There were many of us in our party who had Sugar Mags in the back of our minds, and “Eyes” was almost conspicuous in its’ absence. Though many had forecasted “He’s Gone”, in retrospect it would have seemed inappropriate, perhaps even arguably convoluted, as this show was more celebration over mourning…Personally, I was disappointed by no “Weather Report Suite” nor “Unbroken Chain”, which is now my ‘holy grail’ of song to hear at any given Dead show. “St. Stephen” was a welcomed surprise, even though it was played 2 nights prior, especially as one member of our group, who’s first show was in 1974, had through fate somehow missed it along the way. Nice to get that one checked-off the “never caught it” after a mere 30 years into the journey. Just when you think you’ve got this band all figured out…

Without going into much particular analytical detail, the gist is that the first set struck me-and those I was with-as more intent, with not (as) much musical breath and openness. Not that it was perfunctory, just more deliberate than dynamic. The second set is where this band showed it’s current developmental status and being. The Ohm, the vibration, the ‘thing’ that does not allow him, in Phil’s words “to put closure” on (this) music.

Just to briefly touch on everyone: Without engaging in some useless debate, I think Jeff Chimenti needs no apologies or defense for being the chosen keyboardist at this point, and the exact same principle applies if Rob B. was likewise solely occupying the bench-and who knows that he won’t again somewhere down the road…

Mickey and Billy are freaks of nature; they’re my Dad’s age, yet have just as much “sack” than at any point I’ve ever seen them. They are the proverbial only getting better with age, and I will never not want to see them doing the thing that only they do. My friend, a martial artist, made a most telling comment that they are akin to an advanced martial artist, in that they are actually executing five moves but you can only “see” one at any given point.

From the perspective of these eyes and ears, it’s evident that the 3 guitarists have a mutual respect for each other’s style, abilities, and contribution; throughout the show they all deferred to one another, with close visual following of each other’s playing and on-going interaction with more than a few smiles/nods exchanged among them. While I’m an overall fan of Warren, and have seen him in the ABB, a couple of outstanding Mule shows and of course with Phil, when it was announced that he would be touring with this incarnation of “the Dead” I was apprehensive re: his “fit” and influence into the dynamic. Having said that, I did enjoy this show with his presence, and more than anything else for the “Comes A Time” entry. Very sweet, indeed. The biggest surprise for me from both an individual song and emotional aspect, respectively. This is why I continue to stay “on the bus”. I don’t know if he stays on with the Dead, and more so if I would indeed want that to happen. I will say that Warren’s and Jimmy’s guitar harmonies were of the highest musical calibre; these guys “smoked” and it’s clear they are tuned-in with and are a great compliment to each other. I must also relate that I don’t think Jimmy has become marginalized by Warren’s presence, contrary to what I have read in some previous postings on this board. Granted, last night we could see him really ‘jamming’ in the first set, and very unfortunately he suffered from a bad mix or other such system problems; but in the second set, he was loud, clear, and again very impressively dynamic. What I deduce is that he may have ‘stepped aside’ earlier in the tour to allow the 3-guitar dynamic to establish both itself and within the framework of this performing entity. He and Warren were equally prominent at SPAC as far as lead guitar goes, while Mr. Weir continues to demonstrate just what a consummate rhythm guitarist he can be. This was a “balanced” show, with neither any immoderate “Ratdog” or “PLQ” gravitas.

Warren may indeed stay or move on after this tour, but in my mind, Jimmy Herring absolutely must remain a part of this from here on out, no matter what else happens. Going back to when I first saw him with the ABB and with Phil, right-up through “the Dead” of 2002 and 2003, he is that damn good, and is without question my favorite post GD guitarist. Of course no one can or will ever be ridiculously asked/ unfairly expected to “replace” Jerry, and my point is that with Jimmy, I feel the “core four” have “their guy” with which to keep exploring, moving forward, and taking the trip further with. This guy can play and he’s got “it”.

And as I mentioned in my earlier post, Phil was in phull-phorce (though I typically find the "ph" application cheesy, here it is for you 'phans'). He was the driving force, the pulse, the heart of things throughout this show. At one point, I actually saw him turn-up his bass with the intent of just pushing “it” out there; this may have been the loudest, most forceful, most willful I have ever seen him play (I must agree with the poster who said he had never seen him as animated) his instrument of not even necessarily of his own choice: I believe it can be best regarded as the embodiment of that fateful occurrence 40 years ago when Jerry pushed him down those steps and commanded to him, “YOU WILL PLAY BASS IN THIS BAND!”, and Phil channeling this on his passed brother’s birthday.

Thanks for the forum. I hope I haven’t taken up too much time/space.

Chuckster

P.S. I think it rocks all the political statements that are coming from the stage. As has already been mentioned, this band has always had political interests (see “Cream Puff War”, “Morning Dew”, “Throwing Stones”, and the MIT protest rallies/performances for further reference), arguably perhaps not as vociferous, and point is this ain’t nothing new or uncharacteristic, but there are those around here who are either too young or too ignorant of the band’s history to be aware of this.

Hey Chuckster...

If you check out my profile you'll see that I'm hardly a youngster or new to the show scene, hundreds of shows under my belt and not ignorant of the bands history, thank you very much. I'm well aware of the bands political leanings and was always happy that in the past they didn't bore me with them. Garcia had more class, Bobby doesn't. I'll get my political information from people a bit more informed then pampered rock stars. When Weir says "Vote now while you still can", as he has on every tape of every show that I've heard on this tour, I think I can figure out what he's implying. I don't pay $55 to hear his political views, just his music. I'm with Bucky on this one. And if people don't like political talk on the show reviews, get the band to stop making it part of their shows. Over and out.

Spac is a nice venue but a cluster f*ck for thirsty heads even just for water....and a mind field of parking nightmares. But having traveled from the midwest to hang out in the adorons and lakes and green mountains can tell you it was above expectations. Now we, me and my acomplices from attending shows together over 32 years now, can confirm a good time was had by all. And the boys were truly into the deadication mode. Chucks review above really was on target. The GDTRFB/Angel Band closer and the UJB opener were the highlites for me......grate vibe on 8/1 always....just check out Roosevelt Stadium 73 or 74 and OKC in 81 or 82....can't recall right now....too scrambled up from SPAC....

Jam in middle of St Stephen turned into a Mountain Jam flavored thing which Warren started to turn into a riff from Whipping Post- baffling Bobby who decided to take control, signalled for a change back into the St Stephen will remain part, and guess what- blammo! Trainwreck!! Luckily everyone shrugged it off and they patched things up, but it got a chuckle out of a few bandmembers. Plus Phil mentioned 'the hem of the garment of God' in the donor rap- pretty serious when they mention God and voting in the same breath. Very entertaining evening all around...

I double-checked my post and yet can't find anyone singled out, so let me simply state that my take re: the sentiments of others about the politically oriented statements coming from Phil/Bobby did not single out any specific person/poster. So, I wonder what would make anyone think I was actually or even MUST have been referring to (them) as either being too young and/or ignorant? Defensiveness? Paranoia?? If it don’t apply, let it fly.

Also, my comment was made more in response to what seems like people taking issue with the band (i.e., in this case Bobby/Phil) voicing politically based statements. Very crucial to differentiate b/w disagreeing with an individual being political and disagreeing with what the individual may be saying regarding politically related issues. Two separate matters that should be addressed as such.

I see a lot of things here that first of all are so inappropriately out of place-this is supposed to serve as a show review board. So let me acknowledge my own violation which is and inevitable by-product in choosing to offer this response that is only intended to offer some clarification. With that I really choose not to engage in any pissing contests/flame throwing/ senseless debates here on the ‘review’ board (or anywhere else here in the Phil Zone for that matter)).

Sure, as part of the narrative as to what happened at a show someone might mention what was said/done (non-musical/performance related, which is the key factor in this point), but to further offer their personal editorial comments on it (here, on the review board) is inappropriate (something which I DIDN'T do-i.e., relate my opinion on what Bob/Phil said at the SPAC show).

Furthermore, it seems that much of what’s being written/reported on this board re: Bob/Phil's comments seem to be so taken out of context and/or embellished if not downright inaccurate and wrong. Eg: Does anyone know if Bobby actaully called anyone an a**hole, and whether it was Bush and/or Nader that he was referring to, as reported on the Great Woods "review" board? (This is a rhetorical questions, btw).

While Phil has a Kerry bumper sticker on his amp, neither he nor Bobby endorsed or renounced any specific candidate at the SPAC show.(BTW, by the same rationale that one doesn’t care to “hear” a particular political viewpoint/statement from an artist they’re going to “only” see perform specific material and don’t care for/want anything –in this case political-from said performer, ought that bumper sticker not be blocked out as well during the showsso as not to promote the artist’s politics to those same attendees who don’t want to “see” a politically related viewpoint either?). They announced to the crowd the presence of headcount tables and encouraged registering to vote and actually voting. Yes, Bobby stated in order to help insure the maintenance of our "free republic", but that is a truth: the democratic process requires people to vote. He may have other thoughts/feelings about it, but both he and Phil's statements were/are quite some distance from proproganda. Much more like a public service announcement than anything else. Also, interesting that there seemed to be no controversy when Bob said, “Pray for World Peace” at the close of last year’s tour at Jones beach…

For that matter, who the hell cares how grateful Phil may be for receiving a liver transplant—just get on with the Pride of Cucomonga already! I don’t want to hear about what he feels is the altruistic act of becoming an organ donor! If that alky hadn’t drank too much to begin with, he wouldn’t have need someone else’s liver anyways.

Take what you need and leave the rest.

Peace out--Wait a minute, I take that back for those who don’t care to receive it as part of this posting. Wait another minute, no I don’t.

I forgot about the disinitigration (sp?) of st. stephen. They goofed up a little bit when they tried to bring it back together, but they certainly pulled it together within seconds.

fwiw, LET THE BOYS SAY WHATEVER THEY WANT WHILE UP ON STAGE. I paid 50 bucks for the experience, not simply to hear a few songs from the GD jukebox. If they want to encourage people to get off their asses, that's cool. If they want to insinuate that we are reaching a point where big business can buy the white house, right the fuck on. People need to wake up.

That said, if you don't like what they are saying, you've got freedom of speech (for now). Use it. Feel free to tell them to fuck themselves. Feel free to scream who you want to vote for. Feel free to tune out the headcount rap by puffing a bowl. Just don't feel like they are robbing you of music because they've got a little something to say.

All I can say is that this was a tasty show, all the way thru.
Loved the Other One tease, and 2nd set return. R&C was excellent, and the brief drums wailed!
Those lights were excellent! Amazing new effects every tour.
Warren is a fantastic addition, and everyone was at peak preformance.
If SPAC would only loosen up on the beer garden BS.
One more note- TaperRob is the man with the postings. Thanks man.

Got going late for the drive up - difficult when traveling with a lot of people to get it in gear - SOMEONE always has to stop for: A piss, a cigarette, a cup of coffee, to smell the roses by the side of the road, etc, etc, plus it's POURING rain all the way up - me being the only one with an inside seat so I'm at least getting off on my fellow passenger's griping about the weather - so I go the usual back way in and end up parking in the VIP for $15 (not my $15 - the benefit of having fellow travelers) so I can get out early 'cause I gotta work Mon afternoon - was supposed to meet up with Zoners and all that but no time - into the show, checked out Warren from the lawn - loved the 2nd tune whatever it was - noticed that beer is ONLY sold in the beer garden way in the back - WOW A MAJOR REASON FOR ME TO LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! - I will also say that for 3 shows I've seen so far the people arond me have been routinely awesome!!!!

OK on to the show - 1st set opens w/jamming and you can tell they're ON tonight - WAY more intense than the last 2 - UJB pretty good but I was hoping for a broken up version with a reprise ala Red Rox but not to be - Lazy River Road also well done, the multi-vocalist approach pulled off very well - Estimated next, also good, but the energy really TOOK OFF with the jam after - this was CLASSIC GD - the kind of stuff I'd travel the country to witness - all over the place, hinting at several things at once, shifting times and keys repeatedly - the TRUE tribute to Jer as he was a MASTER at this!!!! - they slow down to No More Do I - solid version and well done - then the inevitable Down the Road - yeah, this tune's lame, Jer's B-day or no Jer's B-day - sorry - and ESPECIALLY in a 55' 6-tune 1st set where every note should count - Music Never Stopped closes the set well - was figuring on another tune but to no avail - why did this show start 1/2 hour later than Mansfield when they have the same 11 pm curfew? I thought Bobby said in an interview they didn't have opening acts this tour so they could play longer - or was it so they could KEEP ALL THE $$$$ FOR THEMSELVES? Sorry just being evil!!!

OK on to the 2nd set - Me & My Uncle? Well OK, better than El Paso - and I'm thinking every tune is a Jer tribute or statement about how they've gone on since, so how does this fit in? The band is the narrator, and Jer is the uncle left by the side of the road? Well the rest of the show sure is all about Jer - with some AMAZING jamming interspersed - now they're playing for keeps! - Warren is THE MAN on Death Don't and Rubin & Cherise - the dude next to me was an old-timer who hadn't seen a show since Jer's demise - before the show he asks me "so who is this Warren guy?" - I was thoroughly enjoying the look on his face!!!! Even Drums/Space seemed special tonight - of course SPAC has an x-factor of it's own - one of the few "unique" venues with awesome surroundings on the east coast (Jones Beach being the only other) like Red Rox or The Gorge - Space gets into a bizarre blues-based space jam which sounds like a few things I can't place - Coltrane or Monk, will know when I hear it again - I'd just heard Bonnaroo so I was the only one who knew what Crazy Diamond was early on - then more good jamming into St Stephen (afterwards someone complains "they repeated St Stephen" - I say teasingly "yeah, curse them, another goddamn St Stephen, those bastards, whatta they thinkin'?") - this version had MUCH more lenght, energy and jamming than Mansfield's - both in the middle and after - Comes A Time really well done, then FINALLY into The Other One - before the 1st verse the only serious jamming - then it's kinda cut short - again curfew issues ruining a show - no Cryptical reprise but right into GDRFB - nice Warren and Bobby vocal lines on this - then the hoped-for Angel Band but not nearly as good as the 8/1/02 Phil St Louis one - again curfew issues - they did take a while before the encore - The Real Thing OK by me - saw a lot of disappointed folks but this certainly is a Jer tribute.

Overall a pretty good show, kinda short (55' 1st set, 85' 2nd set) so I'd hafta say that 3 of the 5 Red Rox shows I saw were better (6/15, 19, 20) but it was WAY better than Mansfield and the "specialness" of the show was readily apparent, being Jer's B-Day at SPAC. Woulda considered it a top-10-er if the end wasn't rushed, though. At least the breaks were reasonable in length but again why did the show start 1/2 hour later if time was a crunch?

Wellllllllllllllllll...if I thought the show on Staurday Night at Tweeter was mellow...

..last night at SPAC was even mellower !!!...that is not a bad thing in itself (unless you are Key and Bucky, and can't groove on the less than balls out jamming RRRRRRock a paRRRRRRRRRRRRty head banging. :-) ), but I do like to dance, and
I did very little "boogie down" dancing and much more space wiggling for both Saturday's and Sunday's shows. I did groove on all the Garcia nods the band put out - I'd like to think Patchwork in Warren's set was special - if he had not played it the previous night as well! - but the Cryptical, the Death Don't, most definitely the Bird Song, but I also think the Shine On You Crazy Diamond and the Comes a Time and even the Goin' Down the Road - OH YES AND the Ruben & Cherise for sure were all nods to Jerry.

Oh yes, of course Mickey can't make a subtle nod to Jerry's birthday, so he hits you over the head with the absolute lamest garbage ever related to the Grateful Dead - "Down the Road" - or "What a Load", or whatever. This song is so bad, I can't even trash it. The Sentiment is right, don't get me wrong, but the tune is derivative dreck, and Mickey's delivery is like a demonic carnival barker. arghhhhhhhhhh!

Believe me - it would be saying a lot for me to say that I'd rather hear Me & My Uncle than I would Down the Road - and LUCKY ME - I got to hear that too! As Waterbury Guy said to me, what did I do to deserve this!!!

Another point - I love Pink Floyd, and I really thougt that Warren and the Dead did a nice job doing Shine On, Warren's vocals and guitar playing blow me away - and I will be seeing him in three weeks in NH with the ABB and I can't wait...but this is a Dead Show, right? So play Eyes of the World or Wharf Rat, okay? Warren will be able to play Shine On with Gov't. Mule long after Phil has hung up the Dead - so let's play THE repitoire while we can, alright?

Still, the playing is VERY good, VERY
GOOD !
, better than anything they have done post-Jerry this side of PLQ, imho.

I enjoyed seeing some great music with good friends - and there is nothing better than that. Thank you.

Show "Social" Notes:

Daydream gives the best hugs, hands down. She is also relentless, and if you walk in front of her during a show - "be quick!" :-):-):-)

Always nice to see Huck and Peggy O, too. Elise and I will be back in NYC to see you two again soon. You rock.

If it takes you 2 whole shows to find Fritz, it's worth the calming influence he has on you. You can't have a bad time with Fritz. I believe it's illegal. Nice to meet Karla as well. Beautiful smile.

I missed meeting Reddy at SPAC again, and I missed schmegg as well...and those are the only show bummers I know of - except it would have been nice if the band rocked more than one song per set! Doh! :-)

Sorry that you took it hook, line, and sinker...however, no shame in the game, so don't sweat it, as it's all good-no offense taken on my end.

Thanks Cal C (Posthead) for reaffirming my hope/belief/intent that at least one other levelhead around here would understand my point. I was getting just a tad concerned that maybe it would/did come across too harsh/real...

There is a lot at stake re: the politcal/social future of our country, and the boys feeling the need to voice the urgency of it all ought to indicate just what a crucial time we are in the midst of; they are not not going to say something. Thank God they f**king care for real what is happening, irregardless of what candidate they may or may not favor. Whoever says they're coming from a "pampered rock star" perspective really hasn't got a clue; for that see: Madonna or Elton-Fucking-John.

(We the) people are the power, or at least that's how it's suposed to function. Anyone who doesn't beleive that the 2K election was the all-time screw job with brother Jeb using FLA for the ways and means has equally got their head up their ass (and FWIW, I was NOT a Gore supporter).

Since so many have reviewed the show here, I'll just add my little observations.

I was quite vocal about my displeasure at Warren joining the Dead...not anymore!! Between Saturday's show and Sunday's, I have been digging not only his playing, but his vibe. He feels the music, for sure, which was what was missing w/ Joan last year. The vibe at these shows has been incredible. This is one of those instances that I love being proven wrong.

Very danceable shows, groovy vibes and great folks all over...I'm so looking forward to tonight and both Jones Beach shows.

Carl, glad you enjoyed the shows, just sorry we didn't get to meet.

Kind thanks to the taper who baby-sat my shoes and sunglasses...hope you enjoyed the small token of my appreciation :-)

See some of ya'll tonight!

LIKE THIS IS EVEN IMPORTANT! :-O... stay away from me.

My review...i thought the show was great....not at all worth the price of admission though, but i got a free ticket so i made the trek north. The first set blew wad, the mickey rap is absolutely unbearable and the headcount crap has to go.

The second set was much more enjoyable. Death dont have no mercy was a nice treat...Phils bird song was awesome. and the rest of the set kept pace. it lacked though in energy and it could very well be my last this tour. maybe PNC...doubtful though if im going to pay rent next month.

And tell me what you can get for fifty bucks these days. I cant even get a good dinner and a glass of wine for that in the city. If the birdsong took you to that " place" then you got your moneys worth. Ya really cant put a monetary value on joy.

Mike very well said, Greg chill out, Chuck..liked your essays...

Gentlemen..ladies?...

The bottomline is that the dead are still jamming. I went form 1995 to 1998 wihtout seeing a concert of any kind, blew of TOO, PHISH ( after cathcing 50 shows from '89-94)..said no to it all becuase Jerry was so kind, and I missed him deeply.

BUT- this is summer tour and if you look around at the crap concerts available to he generation, hell this is a good thing- these guys play good dead music, what else do we want?...some shitty coverband at your local bar called "creampuff" or "deal"....but even then Kudos to all you deadcover bands who felt the love enbough to at least try and spread it. Seriously-this weekend was a great dead weekend!

Okay, show reviews only I know, but I had to respond...

This first set was lame between the end of "estimated" and the start of "Music". The second set was over all very good and very well played. Only criticism I have is with the last two songs played..WHY DID THEY NOT PLAY DEAD SONGS TO CLOSE THE SHOW AND FOR ENCORES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will never know I guess....I hung out in Saratoga over night and walked into the venue the next day to check out the venue...great place.."the band was all packed and gone...were they ever there at all?"..a trippy peaceful cementray like feel...

PS: Chuck: yes, BOBBY did say at the end of the Mansfield show that Nader was an asshole, " ,,don't vote for Nader either, I know him, he's an asshole"...basically "deadheads: don't waste your vote". I agree becuase the gola now is to dethrown Bush, more so than to Ellect someone else..

i have to agree with #6, right on, leave the "classic rock" to mule and i love floyd. had a few younger friends tell me that they were a lil bored with the songlist...no shakedown, eyes, foolish heart, rat, peter....but i loved parts of it and during drums a friend wispered to me, they're fuckin 60! btw, how about that big fat nasty tone that Phil ripped during the break in stephen, the loudest i ever heard phil play in 25 years

TaperRob, that is exactly what Bobby said on Sat. about Nader. He knows that Nader just takes votes away from the Democrats, I guess. And Saturday's show was the best, IMO. Hold Warren back like Sat. and a Grateful Dead show breaks out. On to Hartford!

"SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND" FROM WISH YOU WERE HERE

Remember when you were young,
You shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes,
Like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire
Of childhood and stardom,
Blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon,
You cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night,
And exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome
With random precision,
Rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

I Think it is especially appropriate to be played on Jerry's Birthday given the spirit in which it was written.

I haven’t read many posts, but this seems like the “let’s play for Garcia show”. I wish I was there . . . SPAC seems like a very unique venue. Let me preface by saying that I haven’t heard the show yet, this is based on setlist alone. Second, I have seen the boys this summer in San Diego and St. Louis . . . San Diego in particular was an excellent show in my opinion. I also own and very much enjoy soundboards (Yes, purchased) of San Diego, Shoreline, and George.

Here’s some comments on the SPAC setlist.

Jam >Uncle John's Band is nice opener always. Lazy River Road , this was very well played in San Diego, very Garcia . . . if you haven’t heard it go to the tour soundboard free downloads . . . Phil, Bobby, and Warren alternate on the vocals. Estimated Prophet> The Other One Jam> No More Do I -“seek reflection in a dead man’s eye” Lot’s of depth and death in this song. Down The Road Again is a Micker, but openly references Garcia, which draws attention. Music Never Stopped.

Me & My Uncle is a great way to start set two. The better shows I have heard from this summer open set two with Bobby on acoustic. Cryptical Envelopment>Death Don't Have No Mercy, more death and lots of depth. Birdsong, I think Bobby sings this, but when Phil has done it he sometimes sings “he” instead of “she”. Reuben & Cerise is a Garcia song. Drumz/Space>Shine On You Crazy Diamond>St. Stephen>Jam... Comes A Time> The Other One> Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad>Angel Band, Donor Rap, E: The Real Thing. I like the Phil songs . . . a lot. I think I might buy this show too!!!

...it was all about Jerry. The note Phil played when Mickey sang Garcia in DTRA was tremendously deep...all the other tunes told the story; UJB, Death Don't, The Other One, No More Do I, Shine On, Bird, Ruben (Jer's favorite), Comes A Time, Angel Band and The Real Thing. It was all too much or in my case all too mush...and yes The Music Never Stopped. Thanks, Jer.

Here's what I learnt from the man:

Show's been pretty much covered but I wanna throw down some thoughts for posterity.

First set had some nice songs but overall was low key. Third night of a run... Sunday... the pavillion baking live an oven... understandable. I still managed to rage a little to Estimated Prophet and The Music Never Stopped. Short too.

Second set made up for it though. Throwaway Bobby tune to signal people back to their seats then a full on Jerry tribute. Great, great setlist, matched by the playing. Death Don't Have No Mercy was incredible! Warren was in full command of the stage and the music was like a tornado under the roof. Phil sang a beautiful Bird Song. Never heard him sing better. Then Ruben and Cherise rose out of the depth like a post mortem celebration. It was nice that they played Shine On for Jerry. I do think it's almost too signature Floyd for them to put their stamp on but I'm glad I caught it. Sounded good and strong. St. Stephen was a welcome suprise. Sounded like an angels trumpet to hear those opening notes. Did anyone notice Phil turn himself down after noticing how loud his monster thumping was during the jam? Comes A Time gave me goosebumps. They started up the Other One and it just kind of dragged and I was a little worried but then Phil dropped a bomb and pulled the band and the audience together. Very tight, purposeful version. Just gonna say it was too short though. Nice segue into GDTRFB and then an earnest, heartfelt Angel Band.

Now, I like PLQ and think TABA's great and was hoping for the Real Thing during Warren's acoustic set so I was cool with it as an encore and can't deny its poignancy but I just felt like the show really needed one more celebration tune to knock itself out of the park. I was hoping for Casey Jones or Touch of Grey. I can see how this bummed out some people.

From where I was sitting, a very special show.

I'm pretty critical. Especially when it comes to Grateful Dead music.....and I love this show. The band sounds great. I've been listening to most of the shows this tour and I gotta say they sound better than they ever had since Garcia died. And I love Kimock, but damn...they sound like a band again.

The guitar playing has really come into it's own.

Just a random thought ...For all you guys are out there analyzing and reviewing stats and trying to predict whats gonna happen - Like this is Wall Street and we are a bunch of stock brokers.
Did it ever occur to you that maybe the greatest thing about these live shows is that its entirely random and unpredicatable. Even though the shows have some structure to it, it's not enitrely pre planned - the real magic happens in the here and now - In the moment! I mean to go see a show and then come back and rip the shit out of it and ANALyze it to death then cry when you didn't hear what you wanted is nonsense. These guys do their best to make things fun & interesting every time out. But as the old phrase goes "Your Damned if you do and Damned if you don't."

Bushco sucks, and more power to anyone who says it, wears it, screams it, or even implies it.

Angela.

out of curiosity how many dead shows or Gdead shows have you seen?

I saw the gdead 99 times from '87 t0 '95 and saw scarlet fire twice! It is a sequence I love and is the essence in my mind, of the memory of Jerry, not 'no more do I' or 'real thing' or 'self defense' etc..( althoght those songs have merrit.perhaps yuou forget or have never known the ultimate kindness, if so I apologize. But its not about predicting the set lists ( although that is fun actually) its really more of having seen a shit load of dead shows and wanting to fill my empty cup in some cases with songs that are dear to me or remind me of a very special guy we all once knew.

I am really hoping for scarlet fire in Holmdel..please let Jerry's Ghost sing, Mickey!..ie just do an instumental or let warren or bob sing it.!!!
