So, who is heading to Montage? I heard this place is a great setting for the show, but tough patrols in the lot. Hopefully we will all have a great time. Here's hoping for a Morning Dew!
I'm there! How's the patrols on vending? What time do they open the lot?
I think the lot opens at 430 or 5pm. Not sure about vending. I am heading to the show solo, so I would love to meet up with some people.
Ya ive got forth row somewhere...bring it on....peace.
Lot opens at 3pm
I have been to many a show at Montage as I grew up in that area. Although the county put a lot of time and effort making the place real nice, the lot sucks to hang out. You can drink near you car, but be very careful. put it in a cup and be careful with the sticky stuff. Keep it low. They have deputies on horses, cars and on foot. And they make people go into the show when the show nears start time. No hanging back.
Since I scared you, I will be in the lot around 6ish. Anyone have a special meet up place???
How about slinging on the lot? Are the fuzz lookin to bust the guy selling beers or hitting the aforementioned sticky stuff?
See you tomorrow
Take it slow
Brian
Any Word Yet for a list? or another site?
hello - it's 1:18 am in PA, anyone out there?
a list for Hartford? or for Montage?
Montage please.
Hope to get a China Cat tonight. Bring your canned food for the food drive.
Heading up real soon. Possible bike ride/swim. Then swin at show.
As Scranton is 'steam town' I expect they will play casey jones, tons of steel, passenger, etc. as the PLQ did last summer at ehe Scottish Rite.
Last night's setlist looks great. I wonder how they will surprise us tonight?
Again, it is not what they play, but how they play. HOWEVER, when they are playing well ther ARE some songs I would choose over others. Lots of them played over the last two shows.
Well, I am heading up alone, but hope to see some 'zoners' up there.
just hopw bucky doesn't go and post more mega negetivity....sheez must be a hobby for him
Heading out in about a half hour....
May be late to the lot.
Look for the black hat in section 102, row T center....
Stop by and say hey, and wish my brother a Happy Birthday.
Safe travels all...
God, it looks like it's gonna be a beautiful day for a drive...must pick appropriate driving music...
Man I wish I could make this show. Have fun and safe travels.
Yo folks......been to Montage many times...tips..
Montage traffic is HORRIBLE...get there early...only one way in or out.......
Cops are nasty, patrol all over on foot and horses.....will bust you for bottles and cans so bring cups.....
be very careful with smoke.....vending and selling is VERY hard...
any idea what the time schedule is ? WH opening I would think with a 6:30 start time ? Any confirmation of this ????
word is to get into the lot by 7:30, 8 at the latest. traffic is much better as they re-configured the roads and exit.
Haeding out now.
I meant get into the show by 8. I believe the lot opens at 4.
Sorry to say, but the new exit has not done much to eliviate traffic........I go to about 3-4 shows here a year and its horrible for James Taylor, Neil Young, etc.....The Dead is sure to be SLOW......lots open at 3pm
Again, WH opens tonight at 6:30, dead about 8, right ?
I'm heading over shortly, but I just got word from a friend already at the venue that the security and law are being real pricks at the venue. Friends got bitched at for eating pepperoni and mustard. Hopefully early uptight scene will chill with time, but I thought I should give a heads up.
BTW I thought last night's show was smokin'!!!!

Into The Mystic is familiar, but You Remind Me and Keep On Growing? Somebody enlighten me please (and thanks for the list Taperrob, you've been making my non-show nights much more fun)
>>>>>>please lord, don't let them be covering Nickelback
LOL! I thought the same thing man...it's something new...I do know that...No details from here though....
Rest Easy!
Keep On Growing is an old Derek and the Dominos tune that the Dead played some in the Mid 80s. PLQ has played it many times, including 4/19/01 Asheville as the only time I have seen it live.
You Remind Me is a new tune they have been doing. Keep On Growing,is a Clapton tune I believe,Phil and Brent used to sing this together, mid 80's,not played all that often by any means, and it was shelved after 85 or 86. Into The Mystic is Van the Man Morrison !
I heard there was a duprees before the getaway
Keep On Growin' is from the Derek and the Dominoes album and has Duane and Eric going at it like nobodys business. This record is essential listening. Always great to hear Phil pull this one out, can anyone say Hershey '01?
Would like to hear some reports from the field, not a set list that I would have been happy with but if they're on I'm sure it was enjoyable.
You Remind Me is a hunter/hart song.there is a link on philzone on the right side under lyrics.they have the info needed.even some words not all correct but its good.
Thanks folks....good to know
"The lyrics talk about political unrest and ecological contamination," says Haynes. "And there also are some other new songs. Me and Mickey and (Dead lyricist) Robert Hunter wrote `You Remind Me,' which is like an old R&B ballad, and there's another song that Bob Weir and I wrote called `Time Never Ends.' . . . Plus, we're digging up a lot of songs the Dead haven't played in a long time."

i was just thinking a mason's was due while in the shower. nice.
I thought one Desperado was enough. It was nice for the one time at the Creek when it was dedicated to Ronstadt, but I don't think an Eagles song needs to be incorporated into their song selection.
I don't know what to make of that. It will be interesting to read the reviews.
The setlist that is. I also thought the Desparado was a one shot deal.
Looks good 2 me! Thanks for the setlist!
First set was nice, but the second set they seemed to be lost. It felt like 1988 with Tons, Bucket, and Touch. A little disappointing.
Banyan tree!!!!! Bout fukin time boyz!!
ATTICSATTICSATTICS
first time on tour I think
Damn I wanted that at atlanta
don't judge the show from the setlist. i learned that @ the creek. i could see how this would be smoooooookinnnn'! wish i was there
and Desparado, as lame as it looks, is really gooood
THE (IT) SHOW 'nuff said
hey dave sorry i couldn't make it...i left you an email tonight
OK, I am a BIG Eagles fan, but I'm getting further & further away from understanding
why Desperado is in The Dead's set rotation.
I know the Ronstadt story, but why isn't it just in Warren's set with the Hotel California tunes?
It would serve the same purpose, IMHO. Then again, I guess "surprises" are part of the ride.
(I'm waiting for "Shakedown Street > One Of These Nights")
However, while we're dropping PLQ set references, I'm glad those in attendance got a
"Keep On Growing", like Denver '03. Something about that song says "Dead".
Looking forward to the reviews (all flavors). That first set looked great on paper.
Jack W.---hallelujah. No Eagles, and no more Led Zeppelin. Don't get me wrong, I have every Zep album, but none of their songs in the Dead's repetoire please. I think they're getting a little carried away with the covers. One, as much as I like it, well U2 is a bit of a sretch, and I love them 2. I saw the Real Thing in a set list....is that the U2 song?
And as I said earlier, don't particularly care for Madman Across the Water either, even though I think Elton John wrote and sang many great songs.
Just got home, so a quicky before bed. Review that is. First, getting there. Trek up from Delware was ok, but the traffic into the place took over an hour. I missed Warrn totally, but made it in just in time to grab a drink and get settled. I think Weir's daughter was onstage for the Sugar Magnolia (does he have a daughter? it was a young kid. Birthday?) Anyway, it smoked and got everybody up and moving. The weight fed off that energy and was good. Settled down for into the mydtic, and you remind me, which nobody around me could indetify. Seemed ok, and very lyric heavy, but not knowing the lyrics made it tough. Keep on grwin smoked. Jimmy and Wrren were trading licks, warren doing slide and Jimmy just doing what jimmy does. It was the first time things really opened up and it was rolling well. Duprees. Great song. Love it, but coming off of the keep on growin it actually seemed to ground things again, I mean it was well done (till Bob flubbed the lyrics at the end but I quit caring about that shit tweny years ag0)it just sort of tethred us again. But Alabama into Aiko made us all forget Good ol Dead to close the first set.
Sencond Set. Hell in a Bucket stright up Rocked. I have'nt heard this song live in years and was kind of burnt on it after so many bucket openers in the 80s-90s but this was just realy good. You can talk Weir cheese all ya' want, the guy can throw a rocker. Big bos man was well jammed and kept the energy up, everybody doing that kind of down and dirty drunk shuffle to the big boss. It was fun. Then Desperado. Which was great, and they can play it all they want for all I care, but I think it's more a stand alone tune and would probably work better in a first set. But hey, we had all just danced for tweny minutes so what the hell. Tone of steel, everybody dancing again, some lick tading, but hey its tons of steel, where ya gunna go. Then OUT OF NOWHERE comes the high green chilly riff and we all went NUTS. I was kind of thinking durring tons of steel, that this was great, but when do we lift off? It was time, and the 11 jam was just sick, SICK. I saw the one in Boise that kind of meandered around, but this one was was tight and just wailing. They brought it back to the Stephen bridge riff, but don't let it fool ya', it wasn't much more than one riff DOM-DOM--da-da-da-DOM deal, not like some jammed out excersion. Still, very hot 11 and we were into drums. Long spacey and fun, what can I say. Then banyon tree. I'm not all that familiar with it, and neither was Bob, who was relying heavily on his notes. But the groove was nice and I'm hoping the cds do it a little more justice (the woman next to me was trying to feed me mushrooms at this point, so I was somewhat distracted). The highlight of the show, in terms of weirdness was the jam after Banyon tree. This was a long exloration in a PLQ syle. There were at least three themes explored, maybe more and depending on where banyon tree ended and the jam began, it probably paned at least fifteen munites. I mean it was LONG. And I thought pretty inspired. At this oint I had gone far from my "this is wll played, but" impression to looking for the Cd guys. Masons>SSDD>touch just sent it home for everyone. Everyone around me, having had out space dinnder just ate these up as desert and danced out asses off.
Fearing the traffic jam and ving to drive to DE and work in the moring, I heard Attic as I left. It sounded good.
All in all a solid show with one monster section (11>masons). I thikn they're saving the biggies for philly and New York.
And I can't wait.
between the "real thing" comment and nickelback, who ever that is, has left me scratching my head.
what to say, freaking desperado, 500 shows over 24 years and I pull a desperado, it makes a man wanna weep. I mean really, if ya have to do an eagles song, and this is NOT compulsory, why this one, leave it for warren solo. That said, strange night, the first set kinda wandered until keep on growing which just rolls, duprees always sweet, then outta nowhere Alabama and then the highlight of the show, just an unreal Aiko, the energy is nuts and the audience is going crazy, sadly they kill the second set and waste all the good energy they've built till then. The best part of set 2 was definately WTO>11, the St steven tease was just cruel, the whole time through banyan tree the whole place was waiting to explode when they pull out the steven and they leave us hanging. Every once in a while, deadheads really let me down and the end of set 2 is an example, they pull banyan into a wander zone, very PLQ, then roll out Masons children and I'm watching the crowd around me and even though its probably the smokingest song of the set, few recognize it so nobody moves, no energy, no grooving, but when they pull out Touch, the place explodes...sad, sad, sad.Nice attics to finish, they harmonize real well tonite, sound more together vocally than they have in a long time. Still, good show, but the Desperado and the tease, then lack of Steven really leave a slightly sour taste, at least in my opinion. That said, the chicks behind me were at their first show and they dug it, so whattaI know, just an old head whos been touring too long. See ya in holmdel, right now, its time to start tracking tickets for Carolina
>>I saw the Real Thing in a set list....is that the U2 song?
It's a Warren song from the PLQ album. It's about Jerry.
Is Nickleback a bluegrass group with Chris Thile(sp?)? If they're the group I'm thinking of, they're actually not bad. Thile is a really good mandoline player, he just released an album with Sam Bush and it got some great reviews in Relix.
But not knowing "Keep on Growing" is the Clapton song? That's kinda weird. LIsten to Derek and the Dominos---- Awesome!! Duane is all over the place, totally showing Clapton what's up.
11 was awesome ... everything else was excellent. The new song was hard to hear, and other songs had some minor lyrics and cue problems.
Again, the lighting director needs to know who gets the spot when ... as well as the vocal mic director .... it seems that some of the time the boys got caught 'asleep at the "jam" wheel, only to be awoke by the spotlight...( just a few times )
I think Bobby should spend more time getting into the feeling of the night without distracting the groove by trading guitars. I almost thought that he was doing it on purpose so he can stop-and-start another song instead of a 10 min jam in-between.
Everyone was great, but I must say that "your only as strong as your weakest link"...which could be anyone, anything, etc... so my other observations:
Seems that some of the mics and teleprompters are slightly missplaced. This causes the vocalist to 'back off the mic' when in pursuit of the next lyric, or a 'fade in' to the next lyric. Also, if the teleprompter is in need for a 'reminder' while singing, the guitarist shouldn't have to do a pretzel twist to look out the left eye.
Mickey's "Box" is great.. and I thing it should get a good loud 'maximum' pounding every night. At SPAC there was a good hit, but last night I didn't get the same 'boing'......I would like the "Boing...Yoi...Yoing!!"
The only thing that was 'duped' was one of the cues for one of the last songs .. I'm not sure if it was the mic directors fault .. or the playfulness of Warren and Jimmy ( they seemed to discuss it offstage ) but it looked like it bummed Bobby out...Sorry Bob.
.
.
.
.
Anyway, I loved the whole show, had 4th row, and I'm crossing my fingers that the pic came out...
Makes me wan't to see another.....
I don't lknow if it's fair to complain that there was no St. Stephewn. They played it two nights earlier at SPAC. They were finishing it up in PA. I think it's pretty cool that they're streatching stuff like that over multiple nights, like the Playin / Playin Reprise between Detroit and Cleveland.
Andre, you're thinking of Nickel Creek, a very popular "new grass" group.
I thought it was a VERY solid show throughout. Despite a little too much "happy hour" in the lot beforehand, I was rewarded by GDTSTOO with a 3rd row seat so all was OK. I thought there was some amazing interplay between Warren and Jimmy. Seeing it up close makes a huge difference. The jamming in The 11 was a real highlight for me as well. Mason's > SSDD, amazing too!
About Montage: the security was WAY overboard, really unnecessary, I mean cops on horses patrolling before the show, come on!! And, the queue of cars trying to get out was pretty bad and took forever, the rain probably didn't help. Based on this, I probably won't be making the trip back up there. For the 2 hours from Doylestown PA, I don't think the venue was worth it. Is that really the feeling the promotors want us to come away with after paying %60-ish for tickets? I can hassled like that much closer to home down in Camden.
Here's what I was able to find on http://www3.clearlight.com/~acsa/intro.htm about You Remind Me.
You Remind
Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Mickey Hart
A song played in 2002 by Mickey Hart and Bembe Orisha. This was Robert Hunter's comment in his road journal:
"Mickey is doing a very hot show with his best band ever, outside of the Dead and doing a bunch of new songs we co-wrote. He has three excellent singers to give them full impact. Phil and Jimmy Herring joined him yesterday and they tore the roof off. One of our new tunes, "You Remind" actually gave me goosebumps which lasted for several minutes. A no nonsense sweet sweet love song which struck home with the audience in a way rarely seen with an unfamiliar mid tempo ballad."
It was revived by The Dead in 2004, with Warren Haynes singing. The title on setlists is given as "You Remind Me." The following is a rough transcription of what I can make out from an audience recording - any help with the lyrics gratefully received.
You remind me of feather pillows
Georgian [??] and weeping willows
Days of summer, long ago
[Angel wings] and new fallen snow
You remind me of [radio plays]
In the [golden age of radio days]
Imagination still [escape]
You [?] to see them again
You remind me
How sweet it all can be
How to whisper, how to sing
Of the passion you brought to everything
Of the promise and the spring
You remind me of [life's]
Best that life can bring
You remind me of shooting stars
Life was a joy, but living was hard
[It was a few] precious thing
Still it was easy to start all over again
You remind me of piano keys
[Looking sharp on the bed of c]
Dust of the soundboard, fasing roses
[Ballroom fire without ??]
You remind me
How sweet it all can be
How to whisper, how to sing
Of the passion we brought to everything
Of the promise and the spring
You remind me of life's
Best that life can bring
[You can be, have emotions changed]
[Call the shot and leave the same]
[Now everything goes that is new]
That serves in the end
To remind me of you
You remind me of feather pillows
Georgian [??], and weeping willows
Days of summer, long ago
Sam Cooke singing on the radio
You remind me
How sweet it all can be
How to whisper, how to sing
Of the passion we brought to everything
Of the promise in the spring
You remind me
How to whisper, how to sing
Of the passion we brought to everything
Of the promise [and the spring]
You remind me
How to whisper, how to sing
Of the passion we brought to everything
Of the promise [and the spring]
You remind me of life's
The best that life can bring
You remind me
You remind me
You remind me

Sure...surrrrre...
Open with "Sugar Mag" the night AFTER I go...
LOL
"You remind me" is a Warren song he worked up with the band in rehearsals it is a new tune i thought maybe the article i read had it wrong
Hey Crispy-T,
My sentiments exactly, was slightly sad at the enthusiastic reception to Touch after the relatively tame response to Mason's...looking forward to Holmdel though. Loved WTO-11...
Peace,
Sheila
>>got some great reviews in Relix.<<
First, Relix has never, ever, ever, given a less than stellar review to anything. Need to suck up for future interviews I beleive. But, Nickle Creek is amazing as is Sam Bush, so I'm sure they got that one right!
I think the reception to Touch was the result of being slapped with one surprise after another. There wasnt a Head in the house that didnt expect the boys to rip a St Stephen after that cool ass break down. As an aside here, I wouldnt even call that Stephen breakdown a tease, just a breakdown but damn it was HOT! I thought the tame response to Mason was kind of the same thing, like "WTF? where is the Stephen" and Id say that they had a little probleming reving up into Mason's. A great tune but Ive heard them shred it tougher before.
I thought the show was great, I danced my ass off in that 2nd set and tho Banyan tree was a little slow, thats a great tune to do Yoga to and put me in a fine groove for the rest of the evening. And what can I say but ATTICS. AWESOME. And the WTO>11 was the best version I have ever seen . . . ever.
Cant wait till Camden; good weather and HUNTER!
Hey all, few highlights included first set KOG, Alabama Getaway with Jimmy and Warren trading leads. Also the Iko did smoke to end the set. Second set Hell in a bucket was hot and Bob was out early and pumped to play it. Everyone around me agreed that Bib Boss Man was a very solid version. Tons of steel also well done by Warren. Then the william tell bridge>11 was unexpected and jammed for a good portion of the pre drums slot. The Stephen jam was only for about 15-30 seconds at the most before Bob bolted from the stage. D/s was the best I heard in 5 shows. The jam out of space into Banya was very spacey however Bob did not know the words to this tune at all and was glued to his tele. Still I thought it was too slow and intricate but Masons changed all that and was spot on. Sunshine daydream was its usual self and I think people went nuts for TOG cause everyone assumed Sunshine and daydream was it. But anyways no Stephen however the attics was real sweet and the vocals were tight on it. It was well played and pretty much well recieved. Warren and Jimmy continue to smoke as far as trading off on lead. I'm thinking possible fall tour with these guys. Anyways my only complaint was desperado but what can u do. Traffic for this place sucks by the way. If you come to this place, leave early.....peace.
The Real Thing actually is about Allen Woody.
Patchwork Quilt is the one about Jerry
"500 shows over 24 years and I pull a desperado, it makes a man wanna weep."
I feel for you, brother
Too many people at this show are too critical....
>>>the lyrics are never perfect- so what!
>>>people like Touch more than Masons - big deal!
>>>Desperado- who complains about this? The Dude from the Big Lebowski?
>>>Zep Tunes - are you kidding me, zep tunes are amazing! Ypu gotta Love it - this lineup of the Dead is so brave to play Zep tunes (much less Derek and the Dominoes) it's sick man!
So here's my message: Quit raggin on your favorite band so much! Just dig those Jams! I mean there are tunes which I don't like too, I simply go get a Coke at that point - or sit out of the main area and puff...NOT freak out because there are too many Touch-heads!
OK just coming around.....I'm gonna take some heat for this review but here goes.....I'm not EVER this negative but it was what it was.....
BY Far WTO> Elleven was BY FAR, the highlight...
1st of all, Montage is PAINFUL. Too many cops and what a pain in the ass to get outa there last night. Show was over by 11:00 and didn't get outta the parking lot until 1:15....freaking nuts. Ya can't get ther' from here........
2nd....I'm an optimist, and frankly gave up on HAVING to hear this or that BUT.....this show was STUFFED with 1st set shit all night. 2nd set Bucket>Big Boss> DESPERADO>Tons O Steel ( no jam AT ALL at the end of this???) ? Give me a freaking break.......thank The ALMIGHTY for WTO>the 11.......most songs except for the 11 and d/s jam was all "hard stop" endings to songs. not much jamming. While quick tunes allow for more tunes, except for the 11, it never took off. EVER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sugar Mag...good energy ( Started the show at 7:40 ????)..The Weight Nice...Mystic subtle but nice...Keep on Growing was good...Duprees AVerage....Alabama tried to get there, i'm sorry but where the fuck was Chimenti on Keyboards ??? They won't even turn the guy up....is there a reason ???? Aiko tried and succeeded but barely....St Stephen tease.....F**K U !~!! What I'm back in '83 ??? Teased Other One outta space, possibly miracle, possibly Stephen, which everyone was ready, possibly The DEW, which might have saved the show...... Not a big Mason's Children fan, never was...but a good rockin jam to end> SSDD was fair...then Touch ? Bobby singing Touch has bothered me since the 1st Other Ones tour. Fucking Sammy Hagar might as well sing it.........
Attics was beautiful, think they forgot words but still very poignant......thought we might get a 2nd song cause it was only just before 11:00PM but nooooooooo............
Maybe the Montage experience has killed me ( again) but for an ol' head who really was wishful for a handful of quality, I felt like we caught the Schmegma show.........hey it happens, and it always did. That's why ya see more than 1 show right ?
BTW...woke up singing ...DES...PER...A...Do.......while not on the wish list, it may have been the best played, sung and heartfelt tune of the night. Did I mention The Eleven was unbelievable....?????
Happy Trails...on to Camden..............
if i could write a review that would have been it....
True story from last night, appalled by the Desperado, then crushed to see the misery of it followed by tons of steel, I'm standing in the bathroom line thinking somewhere, wherever he is, Garcia is weeping to see his band come to this, doing covers of cheesy eagles songs and I say to the guy next to me-
"24 years and tour and something like 500 shows and they give me a Desperado, Oh My god."
and he turns to me, holds out his hand as he smiles and says-
" I know, isn't it great!!"
and for the first time in my life I truly undrestand what the old 60's tour heads thought of me and my generation as we came up through their scene in 80, funny, sad , tragic, the glory that is life. peace out
Agreed..just not enough energy. Camden will blow Montage out of the water.
this show sucked, on the scale of what a good show is( especially in this day and age)....WHAT A YAWNER!
>[Frikidanno] "...and Jimmy just doing what jimmy does."
That would be some finger lickin' chicken pickin'
Strange Show. and speaking of strange the highlight of the night for me was...SPACE!...it's true it's true-the best "space" I have eevr seen. that may not say much for the rest of the show but really...there wasn't anything mindblowing about this show. Everything was good...very good. but not great or mind blowing. I did get chills with the Sugar Magnolia opener but this was my first show of the summer and my 1 yr old daughter's name is Magnolia. I do think it did lack the energy and gusto if a set or show closing sugar mag. Almost seemed like karaoke night at the dead. Desperdao-COME ON! I have never felt the way i did at a dead related show as i did when desperado started-I actually thought it may have been a joke. and when the place went nuts over it and brought out the lighters I was in shock-my buddy turns to me and says "did I mention that we are just outside of Scranton"...at this point I was hoping for a FreeBird to close the show and free Pabst Blue Ribbon for everyone. I thought the first set was short and well played (Desperado was really played beautifully)
Loved Hell in a Bucket, I even dug the St. Stephen tease (tease NOT JAM)-I know I'll hera it over the next 2 weeks!
I'm not sure what exaclty goes on during "drums" but I got the feeling that everyone got a lil too whacky when they were off stage. teh show just totally changed directions after drums/space. wentr it to it rockin with a st. stephen tease and after an awesome space that went a lil too long they just dogged it. Seemed like evryone was confused and not sure where to go. i thoguht I heard mason's start once before they actually did it. Banyan Tree was grateful dreadful. I loved this song in 98 and always look forward to hearing it(actually think I heard it at Montage in 98) but what the hell happened to it. no beat Bobby pretending to be Allen Ginsburg-very weak. I wasn;t impressed with SSDD but loved the Touch...except...WHAT IS WITH THE TOUCH OF GREY WITHOUT A GUITAR SOLO???? I understood on Leno it's network tv but we were in the middle of the PA mountians last night. All in all the show was what I thought it would be...a good appetizer for Camden, Holmdel and Jones beach....TIME TO KICK IT INTO HIGH GEAR BOYS...See you Saturday!
Finiculi, LOVED your review!!! Best line:
"What I'm back in '83 ???" LOL!!!!!!
If you where touring in the fall of '83 you know exactly what that means. I was thinking of making this show when the tour was announced, Camden being the only other two shows I could make and I usually try to get to at least three shows per tour. But everyone I spoke to about this venue said "Don't do it, to many hassles at that place". Sounds about right, hoping for two nice nights at Camden (and I hope saturday isn't a drunk fest).
>>>>Camden (and I hope saturday isn't a drunk fest).
May be a drunk fest, but the sound in that camden shed is killllleer, usually cranked up high and loud.
I've got 4th row saturday night so the sound won't be a problem but the crowd might be!
Montage -
Sorry to say..I can't say I have much love for my Montage experience. After 35 years / +200 shows behind me...overeager security pat downs, many rude Montage personnel...I guess yelling and pushing people is OK, song selection oddities and a muddy mix left me feeling empty. Did anyone notice issues w/ the sound ? Phil's limping and his left knee is in a brace...what up ?
Lastly, can the band recall what a 2nd set is comprised of...give us more groove....like WTO / Eleven. St. Stephen riff...no JAM....come on
see ya @ PNC
fall of '83...those were the days.....
we may have to wait till atlanta for that freebird closer , dawg
What ever happen to just being thankful? All I mostly hear is negative remarks about the band. If ya dont like it 'dont come back'. I'd rather have a half ass show than have one where ungrateful folks get to enjoy good sounds.
Boys keep on doing what ya do!!!
Kindly,
Bloomer
Yo Bloomer.....
This IS a review section....of course I'm coming back....but after 25+ years of shows, I think I'm not alone in saying that the boyz phoned this one in with the exception of a few moments....they have NOT done a good show at Montage...not sold out. Boys looked tired....
Thom2...... MSG 10/11/83.....space St Stephen( 1st in 4 years ? )....most explosive, stand on yer chair and scream, freaking wholy shit euphoric moment in my book..............now THAT"S energy.....
these setlists aren't just random songs thrown together
they are arranged to try to tell a story
to have some collective meaning
those of you struggling with Desperado should probably consider who that Desperado is...
who's that Big Boss Man attempting to take us all to Hell in a Bucket
then you'll understand the purpose
the message being communicated
perhaps you'll join us in sending old Alabama on his way
Get away
Get away
why don't we give him
Rope enough to hang himself?
;)
I feel compelled to post. I haven't posted in a while because of computer problems, work, and going to all these shows. I've seen 35 shows in the last 3 years, Montage being number 35. I was looking forward to this show because I jumped on a deal ticketmaster was running for 20 dollar tickets. I bought six of them so I could hook up my friends. I wound up going down with 8 people so we needed to score two more tickets so we could all get in. After waiting on line to park the car, which took about a half an hour, we are told that the lot is full. It is 8:00 at this point. I turn around and head to the lot at the bottom of the hill. We make our way up to venue, all the while looking for two tickets. I've never seen a more depressing lot scene in all the shows I've been to. Cops galore. People complaining left and right about the venue, security, and the police. No shakedown. By the time we got up to the box office, about 8:15, we find out the the first set is about half way through. The night before in Hartford, the band didn't hit the stage untill 8:00. We try to find tickets and we get one pretty quickly. We just need one more ticket to get in. A couple walks up and tells me they've got an extra, but they don't want money. They were looking for a trade. I explain that I've only got a few j's I rolled up for the show. They told me they would give me a ticket for one of my j's. So we walk over behind this van, and I hand him a j and he asks me if I could give him two. I ablige him and he hands me the ticket. As I walk around the van, I get ambushed by three sherrif's. They tell me to give them everything I've got or I'm going to jail. Long story short, we miss the rest of the first set, my friends and I all get searched, they threatened to arrest me, and eventually, take everything I've got(which really wasn't much) and hand me my ticket and allow us to go in. I've never experienced a worse atmosphere for a dead show. So on our way in to the venue, we have to deal with asshole security, asshole ushers, and I can honestly say that I didn't care much for the crowd last night either. I tried to make the best of it, but the second set may have been the worst I've seen since the Other Ones in 2000 when they were missing Phil. The high light of the night was William Tell>The Eleven and Touch mainly because of what I went through on my way into the place. I felt like I was gonna get by. I didn't get busted but I was a cunt's hair away. I am never going back to Montage Mountain ever again. I may never go back to a PA show again. At least Camden is still on the Jersey side. I think the band was feeding off of the fucked up energy of the crowd last night and as a result, we got a fucked up show. People were getting thrown out of the show left and right for the most petty bullshit. I still haven't gotten over my encounter with those pigs last night. Montage sucks. You would be very wise to avoid it, and the band would be too. May have been the worst show and definately the worst venue I've been to in my 4 years of going to shows. And that was my 12th Dead show this summer and it was by far the worst. If you want to have a terrible time, Montage is the place for you. See ya at Camden. Peace Out.
wow, Pete....I had a great time, got the security high, and thought the band JAMMED OUT harder than ever. Eleven? Holy shit - and after the rocker Tons & Bucket!!! and the KOG when it all.....FUSED - well, tapes will tell the story but I will fall on the PLUS side of Scranton - a show of Extremes - and I'll ante up and review it later - but
This was True Throwdown Biznatch.
buckle up....
Boys looked tired.
a little also more than a little grins from the boys. boy can these boys rock.
35 min set break take your time boys take a load off
still trying to figure out what the Captain is saying by these hidden messages.....Me thinks they do this to makes us think even harder.....
IMHO..Boys definetly looked tired.....they phoned this one in with the exception of a few solid moments.......
Just goes to show that, even when a general consensus about a show can be reached, each persons experience is a trip all their own. Sorry that you had such a bad night Pete, but really glad that you're not sitting in jail.
Finiculi, that night at the Garden was magic. We had a friend who had been in NC a few nights before and someone he knew had partied with Jerry after the show and Jerry told him that they were going to break Stephen out in NYC. This friend of ours did hang out with the band but his info was always wrong so we wrote his comments off and we were even teasing him during every transition that night ("Here it comes, he he"). Needless to day we were put in our place big time and never made fun of him again!
I really had a blast.....coulda been the fun of watching my nephew at his first show-think he was truly The Man among all his teammates in that he actually went to a show. When we got back to the hotel after the show, he immediately put his tour shirt on and went to show off to his buddies....think he's already wondering about next summer....
(On a related note....my brother made special mention of everyone asking my hephew how his games had gone....just wanted to say thanks for that, I think they both thought is was cool...)
Can now put Tapecat in the "Zoners I've Met" category. Very cool to finally meet ya bro....you are truly talented....and your art work's pretty good too...;)
Really enjoyed the first set...thought there was good energy, at least where we were anyway....I had been singing Keep on Growin all day, so THAT was very cool....think they completely blew the words to Alabama, but no worries...lotta tunes that I really enjoyed seeing...if Mickey's gotta sing, at least it was Iko, which is a singalong anyway...
Also got to meet up with some friends from my hometown that I hadn't seen in probably a year, so that was cool as well....
Bucket opener for set 2 was cool I thought...William Tell was SWEET....as they were gearing up for the Eleven, I let out a few well timed(I thought so anyway) WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO's for Skins, in honor of his semi-debacle in Boston last week...Eleven was SICK imo....loved that little Stephen refrain just before drumz...GREAT STUFF....
drumz was incredible.....never really occurred to me that they didn't do the full Stephen, so I didn't miss it...Attics was a perfect ending....AMAZING....
Huck, Wileys, Peggy-O, LT, Admin, Tapecat.....THANK YOU.....FOR A REAL GOOD TIME
Onward to Jones Beach w/Lady SI and the rest of you phreaks.....YOWZA
Are you guys kidding me on being so critical? its funny though the diffrent point of views. One of my friends was there and thought it was a great show and yet others here are beating it to death.
How could you want praise touch over Masons, dam wich I saw jerry play Masons never did see that. Touch of grey just reminds me of how the scene never was the same again after it was realeased.
others beat on the first set come on
Sugar Magnolia>
The Weight
@Into The Mystic
You Remind Me>
Keep On Growing>
Alabama Getaway>
Iko Iko
Other then the new tune and Alabama this smokes,. Sugar mag to open into the Weight and then into the Mystic , I say WHOOO HOOOO.
big boss man Desperado in the 2nd William tell st stephen the 11 always always very cool!!!
In reality anyway its not the song selection as much as how they tear it up. If their on they dont even need to play a song to get you going just Jam is all.
Just be thankful that you have a band to see. Look at Phish giving it up after 15 years. What they have no more to explore? Ask Phil if he has more to explore?
Cant wait for Camden, PNC and the Beach.
I just got back from Scranton, and I have to agree with the folks who have described the show as "STRANGE". It wasn't horrible, like like the first night at PNC last summer. It mostly lacked the "magic" one expects from a Dead show. Most of the show was competently played.
I had high expectations with the show beginning with "Sugar Magnolia". Then came the cover of The Band's "The Weight", the cover of "Into The Mystic", some new and unremarkable song, and a cover of the Derek and the Dominoes classic, "Keep On Growing". Finally we're back to some real Dead with "Dupree's" and a rip-roaring "Iko, Iko". Keep On Growing, which they did for their soundcheck, was fabulous. Nothing was bad. But they're were way too many covers and Warren was far too predominant.
The second set started, as pointed out by others, with about four "start-and-stop", first set style songs. At least to me, it seemed the arrangement of "Hell In a Bucket" was substantially different than last summer. But the first third of the second set just seemed like a continuation of the first set. William Tell Bridge got our hopes up. I liked The Eleven, but frankly, I thought it was a little too tight and lacked the feel of the late '60s or even the versions I heard with TOO '02 and last summer. It was very good, though. Then they bring out the riff from St. Stephen (not the slow intro part, but that riff which almost sounds like Jeff. Airplane's "Volunteers"). They play it ONCE, the crowd goes wild, and then DRUMS! "Cruel" is the exactly right word. I couldn't believe it! I thought Drums was well done. The Space section had its moments, but droned on WAY too long. "Mason's Children" was well done, but the audience was not too familiar with it. SSDD was fine and "Touch of Grey" got the audience going. The Attics encore was very nice.
Overall, the show was strange and a bit unsettling. Too much Warren (especially after he opened for them) and too many covers of other peoples' songs.
Security seemed very heavy-handed. I didn't have any hassles at all, but saw problems. Not a "friendly" environment. The parking coming in was fine, but getting out was horrible. The place bottlenecks in a strange manner that resulted in it taking a half hour to take what should have been a five minute walk to the car. Then, we sat still forever. The show ended at eleven and I got on I-81 (five min. away) at 12:50.
I took a cousin of mine to the show. It was her first Dead show and she didn't really know their music. She liked the first set ok, but HATED Space. I think it just went too long without direction.
All in all, not a spectacular show. I've seen worse. I'd call it a mild disappointment. But I'd think long and hard before heading back to Montage Mountain.
Zeus !!
move west
The Scranton Schmoo
Why Scranton? Why not SPAC or Hartford or Camden, other cities I’m skipping this tour?
Well, you’d need to know the Wileys to understand. True people, straight shooters, full of love and heart in everything they do…if internet and PZ trend towards drama and wonderment, these two are immune, or above it all – just solid heart and selflessness and soul. I wanted to see a show with THEM….to share in the love of the music…because I KNOW THEY LOVE THE MUSIC, and there is no agenda, nothing but soul given, soul shared.
Our ride to Montage was sunny and smooth…crankin’ the radio. As we approached Scranton the clouds got thicker….stop in at the Mobil to get food and use running water one last time – and who should be doin just the same thing but Peggy and Fritz!?!!?!? Niiiiiice. We tandem into the lot, seemed we were the last of the early birds to get there – and not 10 mins into our pouring beers into cups….
“HUCK!!!!”
holy bazoooo it’s freakin TAPECAT!!! Not over an aisle, barely down one car….across the row – FREAKIN TAPECAT & The Nurse and crew!!!
Johnny Law decides to make a big ol stank.
Within Minutes of Arrival:
Right next to TC, a car of folks decides to place a half zipper of kind on the roof of the car – Johnny’s all over that and they’re being searched.
Then its 3 boys in a car, not two cars down from us….smoking or drinking INSIDE their car or something and the whole car is searched and they just won’t stop hassling these poor scraggly 19 year olds in Mommy’s Durango. Sketched me out – enough so I wookwhirled the lot into chocolates for the crew and a dash of Ms. Malone on the side. The Law? Huckle slips through the sieve….
And I return to our territory to find that the Durango Dudes escaped unscathed….but we’re a little sketched by security – there will be no puffdown @ 4:20 HERE – so when the dark black clouds roll in at 5 we decide to go in, as the gates open at 5:30. One more round of Sierra Nevadas, 7ups & Ketel, kind cookies and….
THEY’RE OFF!!!
It’s pouring rain.
Glad I got that emergency poncho!!! RAQ is playing the stage outside….
Once in, it’s bathrooms, beers, claim yr real estate and meet up at
THE MULE VAN
Scranton – law sucks, forest – BEAUTIFUL, tent – INSPIRING –layout, fine enough, but I sometimes don’t get the sheds that have portopotties on one side, real bathrooms on the other, Heinekens & Coors on one side, and the “Beers of the World” hut on the other….and beer lines that don’t sell water. BAD. Sell water in every line.
The lawn looked wet – however WE were under the tent. Water streaming off the tent….the white glow of the tent even in the rain felt like a sunglow.
LT & GT are holding court IN the arena at this venue….and the rain kinda soaked out their fun L - but I hope we brightened their spirits. We roll the beers of the world….hear tales of the road from all about….and it’s IN for Warren.
I’m WHOOOOOOPIN it up – in a good way. This is when I love it. We’re IN – we’re IN THE TENT – screw the sharrrriffffff – Warren is singing and the world is smiling down. It is hard to really live life in love and forget hurt and push away pain and wants and wishes of what could be – but sometimes I find myself just truly loving every moment as it rains down on me. Last night was IT.
Beautifully Broken – ohhhhhhhh I feel it MIGHTily, dear sir, you KNOW I do tonight.
when she’s already been so……
I see TC – we go out of the tent to smoke cigs in the spitting rain –
JOHN THE REVELATOR
AROOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
The show for the WRITER and the BOOK – do you feel it, man?! Do you see it, Warren?!?!?! The Book of the Seven Seals indeeeeeeed
And a SOULSHINE that burns even brighter in the rain….
Preshow break brings more ZONERS
REGRET ALERTBRADFEST you were there and then suddenly gone…..I am sincerely sorry I didn’t get to really see you and visit.
But when I got back to the Mule Van on THIS break – flyinnnnn – on a mission – connect The Notorious B and Snizzle with TC – I do so and then finally relax, scammin Dead Guy off my generous friends – and it is all as it should be – for one minute – without people and rushing and furiousness – a toast to good creative folks who meet in the rain and share smiles. It is not always as smooth as it was last night – to just breathe in the country air and be at peace – but last night for one instance – peace surrounded us.
Do you know, my friend? Do you?
SUGAR MAGNOLIA
We can we will discover
Rollin rollin rollin
BOOM
Wiley and I had just discussed the 10/27/91 show earlier that day…how a Sugar Mags start can be BIG ENERGY.
THIS WAS.
Dancin, singin, down with the Wileys in the seats….shimmy shimmy shimmy
…crazy in the sunlight YES INDEED
aw, I love it. It is a transport beam….
THE WEIGHT. They do it all nice. It is circa 91….even without Phil singing a verse, it is pucker sweet -
She’s the only one – who sent me here with her regards for everyone
Warren wants to play a song – I hear it before they start.
INTO THE MYSTIC.
I think of Peggy getting this – she loves it. Good.
Too late to stop now….you KNOW it brother warren, it was too late long long ago…
HARK NOW HEAR
Yow!
Let your soul & spirit fly
As we sail…..
All conjuring up images of a great unknown ocean that lies ahead.
Full of portent, full of yellows and orange and southern allusions.
YOU REMIND ME
I didn’t know the song but it was sweet, it felt tender and yet full of truth and thus passion.
If these are really the words, how lucky we were to hear it….
You remind me
How sweet it all can be
How to whisper, how to sing
Of the passion we brought to everything
Of the promise and the spring
You remind me of life's
Best that life can bring
And then
And then
And I whoop and I jump and I do the scream as they hit the intro
Ba da daaaaa
Ba da daaaaaaaa
Ba da daaaaaaaaaaaaa
Ba da dum da dadooooo
WHOOP
ba da da da daaaaaaaa
KEEP ON GROWING
It is amazing. There is a moment in the end where it was it had all fused. I heard all the instruments – Candace was GROOVIN – and I saw it all crystal perfect like a diamond in an ad, refracting, collapsing, singing, reverberating. The Band Wins, Blue Ribbons at the State Fair. Prize Pies and SOME PIG.
And as if that weren’t enough Southern and Sweetness for ya, why, the band would like to tell you a story about Dupree and the Sweet Jelly. AROOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Dupree so fine. I did laugh when I expected Warren to sing the entire song, and Bobby began it. HA HA HUCKLE
Oh and well then
ALABAMA GIT GIT
Love it….but the end of the set is coming soon…I need to pee, and I last heard Bama with Philco in the Orpheum in the front row, so I have no need for a replacement memory.
Bathroom….and then….I come out….
Oh Aiko.
Well, I’ll get some beer….chat up everyone in the beer line, much to their annoyance.
Set Break. I’m not in any shape to be wandering around the arena.
Our usher, let’s call her “Diane” so she doesn’t get slammed….she’s walking around telling people in our section not to smoke till the lights go down. I decide to be friendly.
“I know, I know, you have a job to do,” I say.
“Yeah, you know, I’m not a hard ass,” says Diane. She’s like barely 20 with serious roots beneath her sun-in orange hair.
“It’s just that, you have a boss, and you can’t get slammed for having the crazy smoking section…”
“Exaaaactly.” She agrees. “I want you guys to have a good time, you know, it’s all good when the lights go down….”
“That’s really cool, man, thanks.”
“I’m all about it.” Guess so….I think.
“You want us to cut you in?”
“Suuuuuuurrrrre…” she says…..
Alright. Indeedy DOOOOOOOO
I use the seats as an anchor point…and we get a fine crew in thar….Sihead & bro & nephew…Tapecat, Peggy-o, Wileys….a real fine bunch. SI’s family heads back to the seats and he stays put with us.
BUCKET!!!
Perfect, as I’ve just taken a bad draw off a joint and I’m now gagging in my seat. But I quickly recover….
Enjoying the Ride no Doubt….”Z Rated Scenes”, aw Bob, Love ya, man….you make me chuckle and laugh to myself, drinking champagne from Doc Martens as I dodge shadows in the gutter.
Ahhhhhh a TREAT
BIG BOSS MAN
A rolling rollicker…is this what our second set will be? Boom Boom Rock Rock? HMMMM
I love this song and it seems the crowd always does too…
You’re Just Talllllll thasssssss just about allllllllllll
Well done.
Desperado. OKAY, sure, I’m a believer in the cause, gents, lay it on me. As Tapecat says, though, just take the political slant out…it’s just a damn good song. And Warren does a a real good job – and Jeff too!!! NICE, JEFF. You don’t like covers? You must not really know Mr. Warren Haynes very well. He’s a master at them.
And through all the feeling and SOUL that Mr. Haynes brings to the stage, it’s not about politics or riding fences, which indeed the Dead have done for way too long.
It’s about the Queen of Hearts – and the Desperate, Lonely Gunslinger….
Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?
Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you, before it's too late….
Brought tears to my eyes.
TONS O
Okay holy shite it’s the big ass rocker for steel town…..

When I had no wings to fly
You flew to me
You flew to me…
I love you so.
We were blessed with beauty last night, if you glanced at ghosts the right way, saw the shadows in raindrops. I will treasure it forever.
Peggy – thanks for starting it with me at Mansfield, and rolling back into the city with me today. You’re first rate, as a friend, as a Deadhead, as a person. Have fun in Camden.
TAPECAT – saw that set with you and I will always treasure it. You give it SOUL TOO, Man, and I salute you.
Sihead – ahhhhhhh you Pennsylvania man, it was as it should be. Thanks for your precious smiles and your floppy black hat. Thanks for having the guts to introduce us to your family.
Fritz – you wise sage with devil smile. PNC, brother….it comes soon….
LT & GT – Sleep!!!! I love you my dear friends. You are our Winged Ecstasy on the front of the Rolls, leading us like the prow of the bold ship….
Bradfest – XOXOXOXOXOX
Bad Biggie B – you are always a treat.
And Snizzzzzzzle, ha, look for the unexpected and guess who shows up in Scranton. Stars Aligned and SO GLAD YOU HEARD THIS ONE, my friend. crazy diamond shines like pure gold
And Los Wileys….I love you so much. Thank you for being the Inspiration to one of the Most Beautiful Dead Experiences EVER.
You were all most essential, band included.
Sail Well in Camden, Mystic Ship
See you @ PNC
xoxoxoxoxoxoxohuckle
I'm stupid....Disregard this post.
High Green Chilly Winds (Will tell)
then the 11
then the Stephen "quote"
yes darlin, I think I said as much, though it did swirl like a prized marble....
You were right, sorry.
It's a very rare occurence, for sure, good on ya for keepin me on my toes.
and JILL - WHERE WERE YOU!!!!?!??!
The Wileys said they saw you there and I was just sad sad to not see you. LOVE TO JILL XOXOXOXO
Thanks Huckleberry.
I've got to go to bed now, but you left me with a good impression of the show.
Sorry to all those who had problems with John Law, it's like that sometimes so ya got to be careful.
As for the negative crits on the band, I understand them all.
But we all know we don't get to call the show, just to listen.
Huck shows how it can be when you're mind and heart are in the right place. You connect with the band, you connect with 40 years of the experience, and the music is right.
Peace to all, I'll be at all 6 in NJ and JB.
Thanks too to Bold Sea Captain for reading the tea leaves.
Scranton's in a swing state, right?
So get out and vote.
Thanks to all for posting, positive and negative, it's a decent read, and there's still almost 42 hours to Camden.
Just wanted to touch base here, this looks like a pretty decent show. The reviews are kinda mixed. I am perplexed by "Desperado". As for "Keep On Growin", I was at the St. Louis show and was BLOWN ON MY ASS by this. I knew it, just not in this form. WOW..... I downloaded the St. Louis show on BT.Etree.Org. Some wind noise, but it is as phat as I remember. Looks like the St. Louis show is still the show of the second leg so far. Pardon me as I gloat a bit. I am still in bliss from that night a few weeks ago. Just got an I-Pod and put a few shows on it for this weekend's family road trip..... leading off with the St. Louis show.
Desperado huh... still can't figure that out. Warren singing "The Sky is Cryin" in his set? I have always wanted to hear him sing some SRV stuff. Just thought it would fit well.
I'm glad you heard it too...
I thought I was one of the few....
Look at the lyric posts...no one knows..
No more time to tell how, this is the season of what "now"...
Get it?
What I saw ( my personal space ) said..
"It's hard to tell .. ( others ) ..how to ...etc.."
Give up..
and when you do..
it's like "crisis intervention" .. and the next problem is ....
"What Now?"..
Get it?
That was my 11.........
I think some of the reasons people were being hassled is due to the loving tenderness of CLEAR CHANNEL. (and other greed mongers)
I was not at this show, but was at Alpine. Alpine is not the same place of yesteryear. After doing a bit of research I found out that Clear Channel got their hands on it http://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/stories/2000/02/28/daily8.html
And then they also acquired Ford Pavilion on or around May 28, 2003

Nice Huck! That review made me wish I was there. We have to do a show sometime soon.
As much as Clear Channel bashing is in vouge, I'm not sure that I'd lay the blame for the heavy police presence on them. They do the private security for their venues but the local police in each town decide how to handle the law enforcement and some places (like Merriweather) are just going to be a bit more hard assed then others. Good general rule of thumb; don't be putting bags of weed on top of your car, that will attact attention that you don't want. A little commen sense goes a long way in these situations.
The security at Montage is the county sheriff's office. The only functions outside of their secutrity detail gig at Montage are prisoner transport, courtroom security and serving warrants. So, these guys get their powertip mojo going to the most extreme levels at Montage. I knew a couples of guys who were deputies there...real hard asses who want to be state troopers.
Anyway, I have posted that the show lacked energy. I left wondering if I was the only one. My sanity has leveled off as other zoners share my disappointment. Besides the crowd dancing on all cylinders for Sugar Mag and some singing during iko iko, the show was very low key. The first set could have been longer, not to mention the second set, but I will. Hell and BBM were great. Then Desperado, well, we won't talk about that. After Tons, the crowd got lost and never came back. Although, a little ray of light came with Touch.
Warren did not shine as he does with PLQ. Maybe it was the setlist...who knows. needless to say, the boys were off on that fine, rainy day AND I cannot WAIT for Camden on Saturday.
You "lack of energy" folks need to come sit in the Huckle Section.
For real, though, it is always a melange of friends, mindset, weather and your Wish List as Juxtaposed with the SET LIST
so I understand.
Just funny that I got Cosmic Breeze and so many of y'all were in some cul-de-sac.

Ive been there. dont remember much, but i know it was fun!
>>dont remember much, but i know it was fun!
story of my life
No, not really. I always end up remembering the oddest things -
how cold and bitter that beer was - YUM
the light, always the sunlight and the moonlight and the Candace Light
the WINNERS - the keep on growings and the elevens and the attics
the PEOPLE - the hugs, the smiles, the eyes blazing with hope and fire and expectation...and after the show....sated yet yearning - when's the nextshownextshow
my heart - I always remember my heart....fluttering, unable to grasp what lies ahead....and then as it comes clear....like watching a sculptor take clay and mold....and huh? What? Really?? - you see Degas' ballet dancer spinning in clay.....WOW
and I remember grabbing your shoulder and feeling this incredible sense of peace envelop me....you would think it would be kinetic BANG but no it was solid and RIGHT - like how it could be without words, for a minute, if I could only abandon my words and let my heart talk.
ay.
phunkin coolio huckster!
right on...exactly. AND YES!.
Scranton.. Only show of tour and I can say I wasn't disappointed (I'm sure though most of that had to do with the company I was in). Huck arrived at our place on Tuesday and we shared a mellow evening ~ resting up for Wednesday! After having to work a 1/2 day Wednesday, I came home, changed and we were off. Arrived in Scranton around 2:30ish where as Huck said we literally ran into Peggy and Fritz at the Mobile Mini-Mart. Got into the lots with no problems ~ no traffic. Parked and next thing you know Tapecat is jumping out of the car parked across from Fritz! It was really cool how we all ended up together. The day cooled down quite a bit and I was very thankful for that.
Found our seats and listened to Warren while it poured outside. I was quite pleased to hear the Beautifully Broken and Soulshine (I sang along while holding my belly and letting my bun know I was singing to him!)
Dead comes out and breaks into Sugar Mags. Nice energy ~ pholks groovin' and singin' along (even Tim was gettin' down!). Next up, The Weight (I was really happy to hear this since I've never seen it live and have always wanted to) ~ nice vocals between the boys. Mystic ~ at this time, my bladder was screaming at me to use the bathroom so Tim and I left our seats to take care of business. After the bathroom, we ventured up to the beer line so Tim could get a beer and we ran into Brett and Tapecat. The boys were chattin' it up in the rain and I finally said I was going back to the seats to watch the show. While walking back to the seats I heard the end notes of Keep on Growin' and into Dupree's. Was a nice treat and kept me dancin' and those around me. Alabama up next and was a good time. At that time we were joined by Miss Peggy-O and were havin' a great time just dancin' and being there. Aiko up next and Mickey just had to sing this of course but I stilled enjoyed it. Like I said, I was just happy to be there.
Set Break ~ zoners hangin' together. Tim, Huck, Peggy-O, Tapecat, SI and Bro ~ a fine bunch indeed!
2nd set opener ~ Bucket. Nice, rockin' ~ had my feet movin'! Boss Man ~ I was definately groovin' on. Desperado ~ not sure.. it sounded good but was a strange song to throw in to a Dead show especially after the 2 rockin' songs before it.. At that time, Tim started to get sick and I was taking care of him. I also think this was about the time I went to the bathroom and some drunk lady told me I was beautifully pregnant and how beautiful it was that I was taking my lil' bun to his first show. She was really sweet until she told me she loved me and tried to kiss me! I turned my head quick so her kiss landed on my cheek and got outta there kinda quick!! Back at the seats and into Tons ~ which I really was groovin' on. I love hearing Warren sing this. William Tell was big, the 11 was WOW and the first few notes of St. Stephen had me ready to rock out when BAM into drums, which were good, strong, powerful. Banyan Tree ~ ehh, not really into so I sat down and tended to my drunk/spun hubby. Jam ~ boys seemed a little disoriented here and I wasn't really sure it flowed that well but I knew somethin' was comin'. Into Mason's which got me back groovin' again. SSDD ~ always a rockin' diddy! Out came Bobby's daughter (?) who twirled and danced around a bit before leaving the stage. So cute! Touch has everyone up and dancin'. The whole place singin' "WE WILL SURVIVE!!" Crowd is going nuts!! As Huck says above, lighters lit everywhere ~ the air still kinda misty from all the rain and the band encores with Attics. Seemed like it was the perfect song to go into.. Show ends, lights come up and the hubby can't get up! Finally, we start to filter out towards the car. Get to the car and finish my preggo sandwich! Don't hang long since I'm the designated driver and I have to work the next day! Thank you to Huck for navigating on the way home and talking me through the rain!!! Tim, you woulda been really funny if I wasn't so aggrevated with you! Rolled in the door around 1:30am and straight to bed!!
Thank you to all who made this night such a great time ~ Tim, Huck, Peggy, Fritz, Tapecat, the Nurse and crew (thank you so very much for the "bathroom"! ~ we have to party down after the baby is born!!), SI and bro and nephew, LT & GT, Brett, Schnee. Jill ~ can't believe I missed you!! I kept lookin' for ya. Hope to see ya soon.
and how bout how I ground scored an eighth of mushrooms in the parking lot!!!!
So funny.
Scarlet, Peggy and I are doing the rounds preshow. We see one eighth on the ground...it's brown and stemmy....mushrooms.
Scarlet murmurs that it could be a setup - she's right....it's RIGHT on the corner of Shakedown and Police. I pass.
Then, ten steps down the row...there's another. Without thinking I step directly down on it and pick it up in one sweeping motion.
Wookie boy gives it his best shot - a half assed -
"That's mine -"
but he says it with no authority so I smile and say
"ah too bad - that's MY ground score...."
Apparently, Peggy and Scarlet told me, Shakedown was abuzz with my antics....HA
"DUDE - that girl picked it up - it was cool"
HA HA HA
and a swift dodge past Johnny law on the 10 yard line
huck -
reading yer review has got to be the next best thing to being there!
aw *blush* thanks, irv.
I mean every word, of course....shudders with blunt bang I suppose.
I would like to agree with the Sea Captain. Give him some fucking rope.
The begging of the tour: Bonnaroo; He could not even remember the name of his so called cause= Head Count. He called it Move On. I had been making fun of him for a good portion of the night with the gentleman next to me. When he said Move On we both looked at each other, and said my god the irony.
I know people will bash me for this post, but come on leave him back stage for 90% of the show, bring him out for a couple of songs for nostalgia, and let Phil and Friends play. Still missing Rob, and what someone else said is true last night you could not even hear Chimenti. We are stuck with him because of you know who. Joan might have wanted to have a baby but Rob wants to play. So go ahead and start bashing
>>>>the WINNERS - the keep on growings and the elevens and the attics
Nice Huckle. Review made smile more than once.
KEEP ON GROWING!!!!!
one question, Mule van was INSIDE the venue?
>>Mule van was INSIDE the venue?
Yes, as it apparently was in Hartford too.
hmmmmmm...
nice
this story says it all for all you critics of every note. Not mine it from an earlier post and right on!!!! Although I have been only seeing shows for 27 yrs my sentiments exactly!---> True story from last night, appalled by the Desperado, then crushed to see the misery of it followed by tons of steel, I'm standing in the bathroom line thinking somewhere, wherever he is, Garcia is weeping to see his band come to this, doing covers of cheesy eagles songs and I say to the guy next to me-
"24 years and tour and something like 500 shows and they give me a Desperado, Oh My god."
and he turns to me, holds out his hand as he smiles and says-
" I know, isn't it great!!"
and for the first time in my life I truly undrestand what the old 60's tour heads thought of me and my generation as we came up through their scene in 80, funny, sad , tragic, the glory that is life. peace out
Its just great to be able to catch 5 or 6 each tour vs seeing hmmm! let me think... oh yeah thast right ... nothing!!!!!!! I am thankful!!
"Man c'mon,I had a rough night and I hate the fucking Eagles..." -The Dude
I was at the show and enjoyed it. Let's face it.. Warren helps cover up for Bobby's screw ups. I love Bob, but he screwed up Dupree's and Alabama. Warren is a professional musician and is bringing a tighter ship to the group. Look at the latest Rolling Stone where Warren says that he can't stand endless jamming w/o a song. The band is rehearsing now, so they sound much better in my opinion. Now, they are at times missing that "special" moment that materializes after a long jam.. but that will come.
Nothing compares to PLQ, but Scranton was fun for me. I didn't have any problem with cops because I wasn't doing anything in question.

GREAT Friggin time!!!!!
Huck right now I'm just choked up thinkin' about you Darlin.......
Love ya more than MY words can tell!!!!!!
So anyway we JUST got back and I am TIRED more soon......For sure, but I HAD to atleast post this here message for now
I had a fantastic time at this show! I only get to see a couple each year and until recently I've enjoyed reading the reviews on this sight. What's up with all the negativity? I'm all about free speech and folks being entitled to your own opinion, but do ya have to be so judgemental?
Just because you didn't see or hear what you were hoping for, does that mean the musicians suck and Jerry must be rolling in his grave? C'mon... I agree that few things in this world are more beautiful than being part of a long improvised jam/transition that melds seamlessly from one song to another, but I sure as hell don't limit my level of enjoyment to just those all-too-few-and-far-between-moments of pure magic and bliss. For some of us who can only get to a few Dead shows each year - I'd much rather see a show like Scranton which was energetic, danceable and filled with a variety of songs played with soul and passion, than to sit through 3 hours of exploratative jamming that doesn't quite hit the mark.
Compared to what I saw last year at Holmedale - the Scranton show blew it away. But I guess it's all relative - and more power to all of you who can see more shows, hopefully you'll find what you are looking for. But if you don't, instead of griping about it to the point of passing judgement, try some constructive criticism or better yet, search for the silver lining.
For now, I'm looking forward to my next two shows in Holmedale. Can't wait to experience the unexpected, hear some quality music and be part of a great time with the best fans this music world still has to offer.
See you there!
Tapecat --
of course it was my HONOR to spend the show with YOU...what a treat to see you in fairly rapid succession this spring and summer....
I can't wait to hear all about Darien and the SHABAAAAAAAAZ - Shabaaz, can't wait for yr take on it too
TC get thee to NYC
Holy Mother Of Jesus of all sweet, beautiful, bounding with energy show reviews of all time, THANK YOU
>>Boy-O-Boy let me tells ya THAT was a Freakin
GREAT Friggin time!!!!!
That's what I'm sayin....
>>>>TC get thee to NYC
Huck get YOUR ass to HOOKAHVILLE
Oh, it's gonna be like THAT - is it?
What I can add after all the reviews and almost a week:
Overall VERY short show - that off the bat is disappointing to me - on top of that MANY "filler" songs (to me at least) such as Aiko, Bucket, Desperado, Tons, Touch.
That being said, there WERE a few GREAT highlights, such as The Weight, Keep On Growin', Big Boss Man, William Tell-11, and especially drums-space-Banyan Tree-Masons, and of course Attics. These highlights alone made it worth the trip. I'm always a fan of a GREAT drums-space-song after space, and this was way out there and exploratory - they crammed all the way out stuff into this one segment. Mason's BLEW AWAY the lame assed Mansfield version. They HAD to do Tons in Scranton (as in '02) as it is the home of Steamtown USA - we spent a few hours there the day after killing time on the day off. Lots to see w/o paying an entrance fee. Downtown Scranton has come a long way since '83 when I was trying to get a job @ the sewer treatment plant fresh outta engineering school.
Yup, this venue sucks, but that doesn't prevent me from enjoying myself. I recall venues sucking in the late '70's/early '80's, as bad if not WORSE!!!! - Clear Channel or not.
I had a great time watching and making fun of all the local Pennsylvanians. Having grown up in Phila myself and lived in the Poconos area as a teenager (my parents live in the area still), the archetypes for the area are: Humoungously fat, roly poly, and I mean, ROLLS of fat, butch haircuts, absolutely no personal decoration (Quaker roots?) - and of course the men in hunting getups and tall trucks - the funniest was the group in front of me and they were all sharing a joint just like a bunch of dreaddie hippies! Culture shock!
Post-show was a RAGING party @ the Econo-Lodge - room service whippets! - who can refuse?
Final ramblins from a 40 something that just loves the whole thing but just has to vent and get yelled at or at leat opinions from y'alll...
OK....have had some time to digest and rest....and read the setlists from Darien and Camden......I hate to say it, but will this get voted the "schemeg" of the 2nd leg and/or the summer?????.....while I still feel like we had a light, airy show...am feeling good about some solid moments.....Growin, Weight, some Iko grooves and WTO>The 11....need to hear....Attics was SWEET, if a slow send-off. I still feel this show coulda' been ...ahmmm...IMHO...saved by a Other One>DEW or Stephen ( did they forget to start/finish Stephen or just Fuck w/ us....I believe in my heart they forgot.....possibly the teasing of Miracle>Stella would have given after D/S some REAL umphhhhhh.....
It seems that wherever your head is at shapes the experience....learned many moons ago but excitement turns to expectations and.....every show seems to have this and always did....someone else posted that's how the ol heads musta felt in the 80's......hmmmmm...
Montage as a venue is a FUCKING CHALLENGE...Not USER friendly.....traffic in n out is a buzzstomper, to say the least...have been to other shows here and not felt "the big boss man" like this....once again the beast we created in the 80's still lives on with the ignorant town officials, but they LOVE our $$$$$$.....
What's up with not using the large screens at Montage but used BEAUTIFULLY at Camden.....????? Please someone enlighten me with facts or theories.....
Will always check these guys out for good music but my supreme groove lays with PLQ..
Let the good times roll...........
try the nissan show for comparisons of lameness.
no screens at montage due to no sellout inside...kinda like punishment for not paying the extra $10.00 for a ticket.
