Good afternoon Zoners. As I mentioned this was my first Phil show at the Cap, my self imposed boycott now officially over... regardless the ticket prices are still too damn high Mr. Sharprio.
Anyways from the more than 600 posts on the "Other" thread it is clear last night was quite special.
The vibe was relaxed and many older heads were in attendance. Security was everywhere, but as described by others, they were out of the way as long as you played by the rules, as the balcony was locked out due to the sell out. We sat up dead center 25' from the sound board and the band came on around 8:15 PM.
They slide into a jam that had Warren hinting at Just a Little light, it was nothing too heavy. This became more jazzy, which was interesting with Barry on the pedal steel, in nature and went on for several minutes, it seemed Warren was easing his way into to the night.Rob held up his fingers and did the countdown into Dire Wolf, which was warmly received by the crowd.
It was a grand ole sing along and Rob sounded very sweet on the vocals and the baby grand, which he favored the rest of the set.
Barry was a little low in the mix but his first solo was very nice and it was clear he was here to play.
Phil teased Candyman and away we went to take another trip back to the GD country era. The Q 4.5 played a very strong version, with extremely rich harmonies from Rob, Warren, and Phil.Barry played a classic screeching pedal steel solo.
I must note Mr. Molo, who's drumming has evolved into much more interesting rolls and rhythmic fills, as well as his uses of the cymbals. He was excellent the entire night choosing to compliment and create unique rhythmic texture instead of playing powerful driving beats.
Granted he did when it was called for.
To my ears Warren was alittle too laid back so far on his guitar playing.
Barry picked up the electric guitar and it was clear that things were gong to change.
I am a big fan of Peggi-O and honestly the way the band gracefully rearranged this version I did not recognize it until Phil began singing. Phil's voice was softer and not as strong since the last time I saw him live.
This song is were the set too off. Barry's first solo was so well played, and extended, that the audience gave the biggest cheer of the night so far.
This version had a a wonderful flowing groove that was complimented by Rob and Molo's excellent playing.
Honestly Rob was the person who was the MVP of this show, he was outstanding. I was seriously impressed by his playing the entire night and his helping orchestrating the band.
Now the X factor became turned up several notches as the band jumped right into a surprised mid-set China Cat Sunflower.
Warren had finally woken up, I think due more to Barry raising the bar, and this version just took off. It was huge and Warren and Barry traded up solo's, which I preferred.
The raced out of the station to parts unknown and really this was the beginning of the best part of this show. The band clearly was in a major groove and the crowd simply roared in its acknowledgement.
They clearly weighed the possibility of a Cumberland but clearly IKYR was foreshadowed, but first Phil takes control of the com and throws down a very pleasing curve ball of a full out rocking Cold Rain & Snow.
This was excellent, and again featured dueling solos from Warren and Barry, and Phil took liberties with the vocals to not push his voice too hard.
Regardless they really rocked this one out in a huge way, and the end vocally end was very cool.
Well down guys!
Then a complete stop and Warren graced us with a majestic Comes a Time, which was excellent...except for the hundred of my fellow concert participants, who instead of listening and becoming one with one of Hunter and Garica's greatest songs ever, chose instead to engage in full out right conversations.
Their loss kids.
The band was perfect and Warren took his best solo of the night so far.
Then a fun transition into a the best Deal I have seen since Glenn Falls 2007. this version was incredible. The band was at the peak of their new born powers. I mean Barry simply became the Alpha male on this one, and Warren was not to shabby either and Phil was brimming ear to ear with his Cheshire cat grin.
Rob also had amazing solo and Molo was their for every moment of this high powered action.
Kids this first set smoked Monday's in a very big way...X factor baby!!!
We were lucky to run into Lynn up stairs during the break and played some well deserved catch up with here.
We went to stage right for the second set and the band played yet another Hunter & Garcia classic with Crazy Fingers. This was text book version full of Warren, actually Barry did not get a solo in this one, who was perfect on the vocals and his wah wah solos.
The jam out of it was cool and blossomed into another high light of the night...Unbroken Chain. Phil was in full command and his vocals were the strongest of the night so far. This ensemble easily danced through all the difficult changes with Warren taking center stage for the main solos, Barry played some nice work, but it was clear he was noticeably holding back.
Darn you Warren Haynes!
The ending, which is my favorite part, featured some wonderful interplay between Phil and Barry, who was playing these perfect strumming chords as Warren soloed and Rob and Molo helped pushed it to a thrilling conclusion.
Highlight number two kids :-O
Barry did play some impressive rhythm guitar this entire set.
Then things became heavy and thick as the band clearly went off into outer space and it was quite obvious that Dark Star was up next.
Warren took full control of this one and he played some of his best guitar work during this segment. This rendition was dense and they did not take too much time before Phil sang the first verse. Rob jumped on the organ and this sound really complimented this version.
One big thing to again note with this band is the harmonizing of Rob, Warren, and Phil it is one of the pivotal reasons why this line up is so good and they excelled on the chorus during this Dark Star.
They did some brief industrial sounding exploring which was cool.
The transition out of DS into Mason's Children was excellent and this power house version was killer, Warren was in full control and he really stepped up for this one. Barry did have a great solo as well too and Rob continued to soar on the organ.
The vocals were perfect as well.
They clearly hinted at the Other One and this shortened version, having been re-interpreted by Phil numerous times. This one was no different in that regard as the thunderous beginning is no longer there and it featured more emphasis on the subtle rather than Sufi inspired swirling power.
I myself prefer the former, and this version was good but not stellar. This Other One was more of a clear Q throwback, the strongest of the night.
The transition out of the O1 was very interesting as Phil really brought it down to a almost quite calm as the band continued to fully play and they began toying with themes form Wharf Rat in a much, much slower tempo, this went on for a few minutes, in which Warren played some more DS phrasing with his slide, before they eventually arrived at Wharf Rat.
Once again the incessant chatter during this part was painful to hear. I wonder what the band thinks? I am sure they can hear it too.
The tempo played was the slowest I have ever heard, this choice clearly by Phil, really but the spot light on Warren's stunning vocals and he did not disappoint.
Once again the harmonizing was stunning but to my ears the tempo was way too slow, although the audience loved it. Warren was the Alpha male of the bridge and he soared and clearly this was his best work of the night.
Barry has a short strong solo at the end but the longer momentous finish was not to be as the band explode into a crowd pleasing NFA.
Molo was excellent as was Rob and Warren and Barry traded off solo once again.
A quick detour to IKYR was very cool and although quite good, it is always weaken when it is broken up from a flowing jam as it was tonight, but it was well received by the faithful, and this reviewer, and Barry had one more great solo.
Phil was clearly pleased when he returned and graced up with a perfect Box Of Rain.
Tonight is going be the best show of the run...guaranteed!
Waiting in the line at the coat check with the music blaring out of Garcia's it is clear The Cap is clearly the amusement park for jam banders.
For this reviewer it was seriously too much sensory overload after such a wonderful night of music.
An apple barrel would have been just fine Mr. Shapiro.
Happy trails.
