Dylan - Colorado University - 4-18-01 Hey phans, Bob Dylan returned to his roots, so to speak, for a college appearance, and the Rolling Rider happened to be on hand for this surreal, almost Shakespearian concert experience. Sure, there are countless differences between the early acoustic gigs on tiny campuses in upstate New York, and his current electric juggernaut, but my phriends, good things never change. Nestled in the idyllic campus of Colorado University, the Coors Events Center provided a magical setting for the master, teaching to his students. The bitter, 'Things Have Changed' hooked the crowd early in the first set, which was peppered with classics like, 'Tangled Up In Blue', a showcase for Bob's prowse on the harmonica, along with some tunes from his recent album, like 'Sick of Love'. The crowd-pleaser had to be a fresh rendition of 'Don't Think Twice, It's Alright'. The closer, 'Leopord Skin Pill Box Hat', off of 'Blonde On Blonde', jump-started the mellow Colorado crowd. After a short break, Dylan sauntered out for set two, a brilliant display of vocals as well as some rootsy acoustic guitar. 'All Along the Watchtower' took things to the next level, as I realized for the 600 times I've heard the song live, none of them were actually sung by Bob Dylan. A welcome treat! The highlight of the show, a poignant, moving version of 'Girl From the North Country Fair', mesmerized the crowd. "see for me, that her hair's hanging down, that's the way I remember her best..." A vintage 'Highway 61' kept the crowd dancing, and set us up for a truly, truly apropos encore, 'Rainy Day Women'. All in all, the night was a dazzling gem -- veneration for the patriarch of conscious music. '...everybody
MUST get stoned....' |
