i for one will be low in section 200 (pretty far on the right, facing the stage) ... does that mean that - given the sound system - i can look forward to getting blasted by jimmy & not hearing that much of what jeff plays? regardless, should be a ball (tho probably significantly brisker than last september's gig).

...how many days since the last SF Operator????
looks like last Bay Area Operator was 8-18-70, the Fillmore....so what's that like 12357 days?
The Shoreline Landfill = Sewerline Amphitheatre, why the hell the boys didn't play the Greeks instead of here is beyond me.
Even Chron Pavillion is a far better and more accesible venue IMO...
Unfortunately I'm not in town but the landfill location notwithstanding, Shoreline's one of my favorite venues...The parking, amenities, backstage area, bars, food, etc. are great. It was built by Bill for the Dead.
You have to be 100-level though, or lowest 200's at the very least. It's just nice and spread out. You can even take a "New York style" pee in the grassy areas behind the stairs to the lawn (a big +), and if you have strength, you can come and go and back to your car as you please. Great for shows like The Bridge...
I feel for you Georgie 1 if Sewerline is one of your favorite venues.Had some geat times there myself, but it is not in my top 20 venues, just my humble opinion.........
I should add, I've enjoyed music from the lawn, if it's not too crowded, on sunny days...always a nice vibe up there. But for opitmal sound and visuals: 100-level.
"Even Chron Pavillion is a far better and more accesible venue IMO..."
I'm all for the Concord Pavillion. smaller venue 12,500 compared to the Shoreline's 20,000. Plus much nicer scenery nestled amongst the foothills of Mt. Diablo.
And of course it's about 10 minutes from my house, so it sure makes the drive home pleasant. Oh well maybe one day they'll play there...
Agreed!
The Chron/Concord Pavilion is the best large venue to see a show (outside of Greek and Frost of course).
JGB played there on Halloween in 1989... Needless to say, the vibe was awesome and the venue matched the vibe perfectly.
Q has played there on a few occasions and again, vibe and venue were a perfect match.
I do like the way Shoreline is laid out, (and Georgie is correct, Shoreline was built by Bill for the Grateful Dead)...
But if you compare the two venues... Chron/Concord Pavilion is laid out exactly the same as Shoreline... It's just smaller and has a more relaxing feel and breathtaking views all around. Nothing like watching the sun sink into the Pacific during a great show! And unlike Shoreline, the sound is great wherever you are in the Pavilion!
Maybe one day the boys will treat us to a little three day run at the Pavilion... Having stated all of that, I'm just happy to see them in the Bay Area wherever they play!
Hlpslpfrnk
also great to be able to BART to the show, and have a train waitin' to take you home no matter what time the show lets out....

Don't know - doubtful. I'm guessing there's a DS(v2) -> Stephen -> 11 or something of that ilk still up their sleeve.
The Grateful Dead played Dark Star 105 times in the 1st set. Last time: 8-16-91 Shoreline. (source: Setlist.com)

Tightest 1st set in a long, long time.
i'm pretty sure the Dead played 1st verse DS at Red Rocks last year...
in the first set, that is...
any reviews? too early? WAKE UP, people...speak your mind!(please)
Actually, Julian is correct. The Dead did play 1st verse of Dark Star in the first set on July 10, 2003. So I guess that anything is possible.
I'm up...I'll make this quick as possible
The lot....great scene....great shakedown st. The weather was unreal. I skipped JC flyer...and it turns out Barry Sless and Barracco did too. Phil did come out for one song but I didn't recognize it
HC Sunshine - I like the song selection ...it was good not great...kind of died at the end
Jack Straw....Now we're talking...much better, band starts to get into a groove but is not fully there just yet.
Dark Staw...Yeeeeehaaawww. It's on Very spacy. I want to say they teased it for ten minutes before fully going into it.
Mountains of the moon. I felt they did a pretty good job on this. I have never seen a superb job and have always imagined its just a tough song to play.
Little Light...scorching, as reported from a show earlier in the tour
Minglewood...hot, hot. T right here at shoreline, where the little girls know what to do.
Duprees...vocal train wreck. I was back in the 200 section but it looked like warren was reading a teleprompter for this one...Bobby and warren tried to exchange lines but it just didn't cut it....but it's Dupree's!
One...ahhh finally the deput. Played fairly straightforward. My friend pointed out they really could jam this out and make it a stellar song.
Baby blue....always loved this tune
LSD....solid.
Overall, I felt it was a real good first set. I like the song selection and the playing was really good, not great but really good.
set II...
...II...
KC Moan. I really liked this call. I thought I wouldn't ever see the dead play it.
A piece of my ass. Not even a trainwreck...no soul, no heart , no music...no nothing
FOTD. Got the crowd back into the show.
Mr Charlie. This was really hot. I think joan did a really good version of this, but they have kept it pretty scorching.
Last Time. We were thrilled to here this. However it was played straight forward.
Fire on the mt. 1) gag Mickey 2) nice jam in the middle 3) and a nice big let down going into drums. They have destroyed what used to be a mamoth song. Phils bass was excellent though and if I have to pick one mickey tune to hear...this would be it, hands down.
Drums...loud and upbeat
Stella...an interesting choice especially since we still had Dark star coming. I thought it was probably played real well but I didn't enjoy it. For me, I've seen that one version that can't be topped and it's all downhill from there. It's unfortunate but just how I see/hear things.
Dark star. spacey intro, verse II, best jam of the night...in fact the jam was nothing like dark star. I would go so far to call it out separately.
Sat night. Knew this was coming...straight forward.
Ripple. Standard
Honestly, I was a little let down from this show. Considering the reviews we're scorching from down south, I think I had my hopes up too high. Warren does a really good job of singing and not being in the forefront. Good harmonies overnight but the whole show was slow and spacey. I'm looking for a rocker tonight. I think there is potential but they still have a while to go.
My .02 take it for that and nothing more.
Oh yea....ran into Wizard, Canyon, Nancy and wino. Great to see all of you. Hope you are all there tonight!!! Very good company.
Hmmmm - almost every show has been "Space - Jerry ballad sung by Warren" - not that I'm complaining, just interesting . . .
What Zang said! Some real high points, some real low points to the show, which Zang already pointed out (Fire was a buzz kill for sure).
That's not saying that I wasn't thilled to be enjoying One More Saturday night with the boyz, and listening to some very fulPhilling music.
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ!
a few points not already covered by reviews mentioned above ... this year feels much more exploratory & complex (for the most part) than last year ... the overall tone of 6/26 was slow & spacey ... great sound (even tho i was over on the side in the low 200s, jeff chimenti had several key solos that came thru nicely & SCORCHED; herring was subdued for the most part) ... my guess is that last night was just over a 3 hr show ... weir definitely had a "senior moment" on dupree's ... and little piece had way more punch last september (at shoreline). that said, very solid fotd, GREAT mr charlie and WONDERFUL drumz & space.
>>>... my guess is that last night was just over a 3 hr show ...
it was almost exactly 3 hours including the raps
>>..this year feels much more exploratory & complex (for the most part) than last year..
I agree..
Prob leg 2 will be looser..Maybe a bit more rehearsaling and then play a few gigs to show that everyone was paying attention and then say Fuck It lets rock and all will be good..
They'll BRING IT to the east coast for sure!!!
Well, it's finally happened, here in what Phil last night called his "home town".
Remember how back in the late 80s there was a sudden influx of CHATTERING IDIOTS at Grateful Dead shows, who would CHATTER their way through the most sublime group mind jamming, only to rally and pay attention, hand-pumping into the air, for Touch of Grey, the song from the radio that hat gotten them (half-way at best) on the bus? Whose point was to *go* to the show and CHATTER with their friends rather than *be* at the show and groove on the music? Remember how much worse it was getting, in the last year or two before Jerry died?
One of the coolest, bestest things about the emergence of Phil & Friends, from the early, amazingly spacey Kimock configurations through the tight, mean, serious business quintet, was that you would go to shows and fine that the CHATTERING IDIOTS weren't there - the people coming back to the music were that same old core of folks who really wanted to follow the music where it led.
No more. They're baaaaaaaaaaaaaack.
Now, I'm no taper. Whoops, yells, claps, even actual dialog, inspired by your actually paying some attention to the music - more than welcome. Used to be nothing better than knowing that so many people around you were right there with you at the exact moment Scarlet became Fire, or when Jerry turned a phrase of the same old lyrics into an sublime expression of the moment we were all in.
But dang it, enough with the CHATTERING.
OK, enough of my own CHATTERING (see how annoying it can be) and on to a review. Highlights, or what I could catch of them through the, yes, through the CHATTERING:
Out of this world first set first verse of Dark Star - amazing interplay back and forth among Phil and the three guitarists. Nice looong jam. Mountains of the Moon once again evoking - or is it invoking - that precise moment when traditional folk music bled like paint through the walls of lysergia, and the sky was yellow and the sun was blue.
Baby Blue - Bob seemed to really get inside the psychedelic lyrics. A lot of times I'm not wild about his vocal phrasing on songs that I was used to hearing Jerry sing, but this was just freaking excellent. Not that the CHATTERING IDIOTS heard a word of it...
KC Moan - fantastic interplay on acoustic guitars between Bob and Warren. The blues-country-roots thing that Jerry and Bob would get going, seeing the light of night again. But of course the CHATTERING IDIOTS act as if this is still the break and they're playing canned music through the PA. Still, grateful to have heard what I could of this - the potential between Bob and Warren on this sort of thing is huge, I'm tellin ya...
A Little Piece for You - Phil, Jimmy, and Jeff return, Bob and Warren still on acoustics, sans the drummers, to produce a rich, delicate sound. Or what sounded as if it were a rich delicate sound behind the CHATTERING IDIOTS.
Stella - Sublime, behind the you-know-what. Used to be even in the ugly late days of huge crowds at Grateful Dead shows who didn't know their own ass from Birdsong, the crowds would inevitably at least gel around the post-space Jerry ballad. Still this was incredibly soulful, Warren making the song his own in a way that does Jerry proud, and Phil laying on heart-wrenchingly beautiful accompaniment.
Overall - totally enjoyed this music. Where at one point a few years ago it seemed that Bob and Warren would hardly acknowledge each other when they shared the stage for the occasional jam, they now have a fantastic blues-roots thing going on and both are grooving on each other. Phil seems much more pleased, much more comfortable with what's going down than he was on previous The Dead tours, though still nowhere as engaged as he is with his own band. And what a joy, always, to watch Billy on the traps. Mickey, for once, wasn't too overbearing on the percussion side (as someone else noted in a recent post, he really was all of the bowling balls bouncing in that proverbial dryer, back in the day), though I wish he would recognize the talents of the singers he's sharing a stage with, and leave that work to them.
Would love to see this band in a venue where the crowd is totally into it, where the crowd actually shows the band some love and respect, and is not laced with CHATTERING IDIOTS, who are clearly the strychnine in my particular peyote button this morning....
Well, I've had more than my share of chattering idiots @ "the Q", then again, I'm on the least coast - I'd have to say it's definitely the alcohol factor - Jones Beach, in the heart of Long Island, was the quietest, most respectful crowd I've experienced in YEARS - and why? - NO ALCOHOL SALES!!!!!!!
Another obesrvation Dewit made in the San Diego or Irvine reviews - the chattering idiots with BACKSTAGE PASSES!!!! Now THAT really gets my gall - had that a few times last year - comp tix folks too - up front off to the side seems to be comp tix/backstage pass territory - really, the band should be giving out flyers with each comp tix/backstage pass: "As a guest, and therefore an ambassador, of the band, seeing the show for FREE, you have an obligation to be polite and courteous to those attendees paying FULL PRICE for their tix - despite the fact that you are obviously too cool to be cool"
Gotta agree about that 'ere alcohol factor. Enjoyed a malt beverage myself last night, but would have gladly given it up -- and hell the doses and weed too if it came down to it -- for a crowd with a clue and an easier time hearing and paying attention to the music I came for.
there were mass amounts of chattering idiots in SD and Irvine. at one point in San diego there was 3 chicks next to me, who looked like they knew what was up. One of them kept letting out screams for as long as she could and then when she would finish she would do it again. Im in the row in front of her getting down, I turn around and put my finger to my mouth to signal her to please keep it down. she does the complete opposite and starts screeching again, i completely stop danceing lean over to her and say " can you please keep it down" she says " they are alive" and screechez again, I say "yes they are so SHUT UP, you are completely ruining it for me". after that she looked like she was gonna cry and I didnt give a rats ass, I said to her Boyfriend "sorry man she was bugging the hell out of me", and he says "No Prob I understand".
some people have no balls, I dont care I will tell anyone to shutup if I really wanna hear.
Had they left the name alone (i.e., The Other Ones), I'm sure the chatter factor would be decreased greatly. But let's face it, The Dead is designed to bring out the clueless masses and their $$$$$. Sad but true
i guess i got lucky in section 200 last night wrt chattering idiots. NOT a factor at all there ... rather, a bunch of nicely knowledgable folk with a nice collective beer & thc buzz
we had the chattering monkeys all around us in sec 101, but my wife and I were so enthralled by the band for most of the show that it didn't really annoy us that much. We had big fun! A great sounding show with some very muscular and rockin' moments, and tons of smooth exploration. and as esseph pointed out, Bobby and Warren on KC Moan was exceptional, there was very real chemistry there.
have fun in Sacto y'all!

overall i had a good time. the first set was great the second set had an odd song selection and i'd like to take the time to thank all of you who take in nuggs but no pipe i will always glady share mine with you!
thanks to all of you for the reviews --- why do people talk when theys hould be listening?? I've never understood that. Very rude in my book. See as many of you as I can in detroit - "DEAD rock City."
well I thought they show cased Warren to well.....
It was the Warren show with the Dead as the back up band.....
I love Warren and such a talent should be right in front......he is such a natural that it is scary......he reminds me of Garcia but soooo different....
Great player, great singer, great presence on stage..

on the chattering factor:
GET OVER IT
sure, no one likes blathering. but what it all comes down to is good times in a shared space among folks united by a common interest. and after the negativity of last year's incarnation (aka 'dead lite'), I'd say it was good to see a lineup and audience that were actually stoked and into it, and for many, that chattering was all part of it. summer tour people, remember?
it's all part of the scene, man. show's don't revolve around you. if bg noise bums you so much, just move. that or learn to focus.
now flame on..
>>>if bg noise bums you so much, just move.
I always do, but it sucks to have to split your seat because of some lame jabber jaw./ why the fuck do you go to shows? to talk? that aint part of it and it never was.
I'm not going to go song by song... But overall, I was impressed with the band's overall sound! This is as tight as we've seen them in years. To be honest, I thought they were so "on" last night that I really didn't care waht they pulled out (which is unusual for me)...
Some great highlights were a ROARING "Mr. Charlie!" This was was all over the place! And IMHO the Boys played "One" with more conviction than U2 ever has... It was a nice show-stopper in the first set!
The "Dark Star Tease" that many are referring to was actually that mean ol' Wharf Rat Tease... I'm hoping we'll get to see that dusted off by the time we hit the Gorge!
One of the better Minglewood's I've seen in many, many years.... Last Time was excellent... The only trainwreck for me persomally was the Dupree's... They took it right out of Mingle and just kind of found their way through it.
Again, overall, these guys are sounding amazing! I seriouly did't go in with expectations (which I haven't for the past 27 years)and I was a little concerned they may have lost some of the zip they had last year... Well, all I can say is musically, they will blow you away! Once they're able to lock down the right tunes for the right moment, etc., it's very likely they will be able to kick some ass whenever they chose to do it!
Watch out East Coast! These guys are gonna blow your mind!
OK, that's it from me.... Looking forward to their first night ever in Marysville!
I thought last night was very good. I also had MAJOR problems with chattering idiots where I was siting. I really do not understand why someone would go to a show to talk. I ask everyone who is annoyed by these people to please be proactive in asking people to quiet down. I think people are too polite sometimes, but if we do it the experience will be enhanced for all. Alcohol should not be a prominent substance at a dead show. My only other complaint is that on the lawn most of the show was at too low of a volume. It was not until drums that they fixed the problem, and still it was not as loud as I would have liked. Did any one else notice this. I often wonder when the mix is off or the volume is low if the people controling the sound are aware of it and working on it. Do they have folks on the lawn giving feedback about the sound or do they just set it at the begining of the show and forget about it? Any insight into this would be apreciated.
I often wonder when the mix is off or the volume is low if the people controling the sound are aware of it and working on it.
josh , thats such a good question , i stopped buying lawn tix for that reason . and the chatty cathies kill me !
what is up with that , i had a sci show last fall pretty much ruined by them . i did speek up , starting with i am trippin a bit and i gotta hear this , please be quiet , and lastly will you shut the fuck up .
the problem with this is it changes your mind set and drains the fun out of the show .
maybe somebody knows the answer to this: from prior concert posts, it sounds like the band is using teleprompters for some of the older tunes (& to help mr haynes out as he learns things). are the teleprompters the small flat screen-like things set up on microphone-like booms & maybe 3-4 feet tall? i noticed em last night at shoreline, but wasn't sure if that was the case.
Yes, that is indeed the case
Didn't hear any chattering in the lower section, we were all too busy dancin our arses off. Kinda wish I could have heard Jimmy's guitar more, I love his playing but he sounded drowned out, was very impressed with Jeff's chops on keyboard - he had some incredible moments.
Anybody else see what went down on Shakedown after the show? Cops armed with tear gas arrested a girl from group holding a candle light vigil for a friend who died. Not sure what went down, somebody said that the security asked them to extinguish the candles and they refused, hence the mass arrival of cops. Probably more to the story, hard to believe that the girl was hauled off for candle burning only. Regardless, sad to see at the end of the concert.
Shoreline must not of been as good as irvine! shit with all of these complaints and all.
Wonderful Dead show. Warren really adds a lot of luster to the overall sound. That acoustic segment to begin the second set just re enforces the new attitude. The show was extremely well played throughout. I especially dug the Dark Star. The sound was good up on the lawn but, as others have reported, at times despite the stellar playing, there were lots of noisy chatty folks who talked over some of the quieter parts. This really annoyed us during Robert Hunter's set.
The opening act J.C. Flyer who played on the stage up by the beer deck really took us by surprise, and, as it turned out, the good vibe up there really set the tone for a long evening of good music.
I had no that idea J.C. played music. My girlfriend and I had gotten in the show about a quarter to five. The Dead were still doing their soundcheck so we lined up with hundreds of other folks inside the Shoreline vending area waiting to go up to the lawn. Just after 5, a country band came on the stage near the micro beer deck on the lawn outside stage left. A couple of minutes into their first song they let us up to the lawn where we layed our blanket. Going back up there for a beer, I drifted off through the crowd while the band was now playing a cool tex mex sounding tune. That's when I recognized the guy singing and playing guitar. It was J.C.! Yeah that J.C. from Phil and Friends. By now the crowd in that area in front of that stage had begun to swell considerably. J.C.'s lead guitarist was Pete Harris who used to play in the JGB band and now plays in Quicksilver Gold. In fact he was playing with some Cipollina twang on a song that I think was called Alone In the Wind. Fetching some kind Sierra Nevada beers I ventured back into that crowd and who should I see standing on the back of the stage but Phil Lesh and Jimmy Herring. They were smiling from ear to ear and really digging the music. The band had a really good pedal steel player. Someone told me it was Barry Sless but it was not. This guy could really play though. Phil now had his bass out and I wasn't going anywhere. Both Phil and Jimmy came out and did what J.C. said was a Robert Hunter tune - I didn't recognize it- but it rocked for sure. Jimmy Herring and Peter Harris really did some incredible solos while Phil layed down some phat bass. They really jammed hard for a good 10 minutes. I was impressed with J.C. and didn't know that he played music. Phil really dug it too and before he left he introduced J.C. and gave him a big hug which brought smiles all around. J.C. did a bunch of original songs I think as I had never heard any of them. he closed his set with a funny country song about "kicking Deadheads asses and raising hell." It's not what you think because he sang it accapella at the end and he had everyone in the crowd singing along with him. It was alot of big Phun.
Like I said I've seen J.C. around for years - a big tall guy wearing a cowboy hat. But I had no idea that they guy could really play. Good job!
Now how can I get a CD of this show? There appeared to be loads of tapers.
>>>Anybody else see what went down on Shakedown after the show?
We went back to shakedown after the show to eat and come down a bit before driving... there were about 20 cops standing in an enclosure nearby looking disinterested. Guess that didn't last
>>Saw all the local heads but the east was nowhere to be found......I never saw Fritz...
Wino... where were you during JC Flyer? I was lookin' for you and Fritz and everyone else but I guess I missed ya's...
... and then at the setbreak, I became glued to my seat... I got a case of psilo-shy-bin-ness... couldn't walkie-talkie too well...
As far as the show was concernced, I was completely floored as were my two pals (one was a relative newbie like me, the other, an old head who saw shows in the 60's/70's, joked that I didn't deserve such a grate first set... referring to the fact that I haven't paid enough "dues"...).
Cannot wait for this weekend to do it all over again!
Hope to actually meet up with some of ya then...
gotta chime in on the chattering. I HATE IT! I have actually had to "walk off" some of the chattering becasue of the state of mind I was in. teh worst place...The Electric Factory in Philly. if you are under the overhang-under the bar. the noise is just echoes and bounces all over the place. When Bobby would start acoustic I couldnt even hear over the idiot chatter. stay home and talk over cd's!
>>I got a case of psilo-shy-bin-ness<<
Ha ha! That's it exactly It got me too...and I loved every minute of it!
>>>and I loved every minute of it!
Me too Emily!
chattering--must've missed it
it was disappointing to see only one person in the first two rows make much of an attempt to stand/dance through most of it. 3rd row however ;)
irvine was not as good as shoreline, gunner, which was better than san diego--don't get me wrong SD was great!
'completely floored'--ayup
>I didn't deserve such a grate first set... referring to the fact that I haven't paid enough "dues".
heh, or you'll know you're a deadhead when you like first sets......
back to the grind--bleah
>>heh, or you'll know you're a deadhead when you like first sets......
All last week I had been listening to the Feb 1969 show with Darkstar and Mountains... so it was extra sweet for me to hear them performed live...
>>Wino... where were you during JC Flyer?
I was in the middle next to the 2 tapers
and then I was at the totuem pole
Bitching about the crowd at a concert is lame.
Come one or come all to Atlanta, chatter all the fuck you want, IT'S GOING TO BE A PARTY!!!
>>and then I was at the totuem pole
Shit... I kept lookin' for your "Brewed in Marin" T-shirt... I was sittin' at the table near the Sierra Nevada booth. Prolly lookin' right at you guys and didn't know it. Again, shit.
Somebody telling me to be quiet at a show would be welcomed with a nice, big, FUCK YOU.
Peace, Love, and Happiness.
>>Somebody telling me to be quiet at a show would be welcomed with a nice, big, FUCK YOU.
Which is why I've stopped trying to ask, politely, in even the nicest way I can: because people who are incosiderate enough to talk, loudly, through an entire show, cannot conceive of a request from their neighbor as anything other than the equivalent of a cop busting them for smiling on a cloudy day.
World grows dark and mean indeed, whether or not you add smiley faces to your post.
Though at least for people posting to this thread at this time, folks annoyed by chatterers are by far in the majority...
>>>World grows dark and mean indeed, whether or not you add smiley faces to your post.
Well put, and true.
Hey Ryan,
dittos all round on the chatter issue....but they are just one facet of the rest of those who are not there for the music:the folks too drunk to remember the last song, the "do you hear me now?" robots with the plastic glued to their ear, the ones on the lot who could care less if the get a ticket in they are just there to be on tour and make the money to stay on tour, the people who yell "this song sucks" to every song they dont personally know cause it wasn't one of the 5 songs that got any real radio play out of the hundreds of gems, AND ESPECIALLY the dudes from NY packed in a van with no gas and $7 between em stuck in the wal mart parking lot in phoenix who said red rocks was awesome but hadn't actually seen any shows......
....only one in ten thousand come for the show....
But the magic of the music that is being kept alive and still filling our hearts with joy and inspiration is spreadin.....because along with the folks who didn't share in the joy I experienced, there were those moments that proved the boyz still got that spark- I spoke to a security guard in SD who was thinking of quitting his job to go to irvine the next night, he was so floored by the music.....another face stolen upon first contact.....and several old timers who had stayed away since jer passed who are born again heads, jaws on the ground, excited at the freshness of the music, trying to figure out how to see a few more shows....
Does any one have any theories about why the loud talking issue is worse now than ever before? The behavior of the people around me was worse than any other show I have ever been to. It seems that in the past folks were on the same page about being there to experience beautiful soundscapes.

ALCOHOL, ALCOHOL, and more ALCOHOL . . .
. . . . and the coinciding dearth of 'erb smokin' - due to random/ pre-employ piss/ hair testing, cost/ scarcity due to decades of Republican/ Republicrat admin's - yes, indeed, world grows dark & mean - @ Red Rocks, in the most spiritual environment possible to see a concert, it was very mind-crushing to be surrounded by a sea of drunken babblers just about every moment of every night - well, except when the weather kicked everyone's ass on Friday, but then they played the worst cheez-off post-drums EVER (I mean, could a 3-guitar Not Fade Away ever be so damn JAMLESS)!!!
Used to be back in the day of stealth taping we could reliably silence the most aggressive drunken babblers with a few tokes of kind - they'd pass out in a pool of their own vomit w/in minutes - nowadays drunks won't even accept a hit . . .
>>>>>Bitching about the crowd at a concert is lame.
Come one or come all to Atlanta, chatter all the fuck you want, IT'S GOING TO BE A PARTY!!!
Somebody telling me to be quiet at a show would be welcomed with a nice, big, FUCK YOU. <<<<<
Well, Ryan, that's why most of us with half a brain (your comments pretty much exclude you from this group) won't be making it to your BIG PARTY in Atlanta (not that I'd go to Atlanta anyway, unless I absolutely had to). As I can see from your profile, you're clearly in the age group of those who jumped on the bus in the late 80s/early 90s (probably due to hearing "Touch of Grey" on some Atlanta Top 40 FM station).
OK, OK - it's not right to bust your chops just for your age or your background, but you're definitely in the minority here. The issue isn't whether you can talk at a show or can't chat with your friends - the problem is the preponderance of people who have no clue how to LISTEN to the music. Most of us paying our $50-60 a pop would like to hear MOST of the music being played during a show (this is the Dead, it ain't AC/DC or Van Halen, where you probably couldn't hear someone talking if you tried). I was fortunate this time around. I was down in some good seats and the crowd around us was mature and respectful. Only towards the end of the show did some jackass turn up (obviously intoxicated - alcohol, I'd assume) who couldn't contain his comments about Warren's playing/singing on Stella Blue ("Nice!" "Nice!"), not to mention singing along in a lameass drunken manner. Last year, it was a bunch of loud, obnoxious fratboy types who brought in a bunch of extra friends into the row behind us and couldn't shut the hell up - had to finally tell them to "SHUT UP" during Dark Star (get a clue, you choads!) So, I'm glad you'll tell me to "_uck off" if I ask/tell you to keep it down.
The big question is this: why are you even at your seat when you could just as easily be outside at the bar, having your drink and your meaningless conversation? You'll hear the music just as well as you would inside, and you wouldn't be driving those of us who want to LISTEN to the music crazy. I know, it's a tough question. GROW UP!!! Nobody has the right to demand exactly how others should act in a public venue, but we do have the right to make you understand that you're making it less pleasurable for the majority of us.
The duck quacking is amazing. RUDE, people. Talk quietly, up on the lawn, anywhere but where people are listening.
The Irvine crowd was a huge improvement over San Diego. During Warren's set they paid attention, and in the end were the most gracious crowd I have seen since Town Hall in NY. The Bowery was a bunch of chatterers.
As for this....
>>>Bitching about the crowd at a concert is lame.
Come one or come all to Atlanta, chatter all the fuck you want, IT'S GOING TO BE A PARTY!!!
I just moved to Atlanta. I have suffered the chatterers at one of the most beautiful venues I have ever been to (Chastain Park). Ryan, my friend, you don't want to be asked politely to please be quiet by me, and not do so. I am not above having idiots removed by security when they don't shut the hell up. Shows aren't date night for me, they are church.
What can I say?
How about, "I'm having more fun than you!"
Hit my 1st show since Albany 95'. I wasn't sure what to expect and I didn't go in with very high expectations. I won't bother to review as others have summed it up quite accurately. Having seen the band 175 times between 79' and 95' (most between 81'& 87')I must say it was the most boring show I ever saw. Although well played and spacey, it never got rockin, imho. The volume on the lawn was pitiful, everyone deserves a refund who was on the lawn. I had to sneak down into the seated area to salvage the night. Looking at thier P.A., I've seen mightier stacks in theatres from back in the day. Is this a rock concert? Even in seats, no need to raise your voice to quietly comment to my friend. I had heard Shoreline had a bad rap when it comes to sound quality, quite true. Musically these guys are solid, 1st post Jerry show for me so I can't compare. Of course I missed the big guy, but this band has a full sound and huge potential. Hopefully they'll unleash it somewhere for the folks. Its just nice to see them playing again as a unit and enjoying themselves. Judging from the smiles all around the folks were enjoying it too. My friend asked my if I would go again, I guess I would to The Frost or Greek or Kaiser, but I don't think I'll ever bother with Shoreline again. Shame to, my brothers house less than a mile door to door. This could be the "last time", I dont know.....have fun if you go and by all means be kind to your neighbor, they paid to hear the band play, they should be able to enjoy it. Peace to all.
>>>Although well played and spacey, it never got rockin, imho. The volume on the lawn was pitiful, everyone deserves a refund who was on the lawn.
What you say is valid. That sound system is absurd. And the bands performance at shorline: delicate and mellow. It seemed to be to be in the spirit of the 1st set accoustic they did in October of 1980. I'm sure artistic, but not my cup of tea. I need the rock and roll.
Well Mountain Jam, don't let your Shorline night be how you precieve this Band. I had my best friend join me for Shorline and I was so sad that is going to be his only show.
I heard them in Chula Vista and Marysville. THEY ROCKED OUR SOCKS OFF! This band really is incredible. Jerry is just smilling down, so happy to be jammin' with Jimmy. They have got it.
So please give a listen to anythin but Shorline.
>>>I was bumed out that the zoners didn`t meet...
the west is soooooo unorganized it`s not funny..
Me too Wino
I really wanted to meet you and Gunner and Hall and Zang and the rest.
I was at the Totem poll during set break and asked everyone I could see if they were from the Philzone. Nothing.
I called Gunner's cell. No answer.
Nice write up AZHead, S. Frank. So how far are you going on tour?
I think I remember hearing that when Graham was given the go ahead to build this place, noise concerns were an issue, and he was given a max decibel figure. is that accurate?
>>>>Somebody telling me to be quiet at a show would be welcomed with a nice, big, FUCK YOU.
>>>>What can I say?
>>How about, "I'm having more fun than you!"
Not likely if I'm elbowing you in the head every chance I get.
Aw, just kidding, I'd never do that. Just out of curiosity, you think your right to talk loudly through the show somehow supercedes everyone else's right to hear the show? Do you also talk through movies?
Either you ain't no real southern boy or else your mama didn't raise you right. No wonder I dislike Atlanta so much if everyone is so rude. That's real jersey talk there. What exit are you from, ya aggro yahoo?
Show ain't about you, son.
(PS, my apologies to all the fine people from jersey who don't talk at shows or say "Fuck You" to people who just want to hear the show. I geuss Atlanta is the jersey of the south if this yuck is representin'.)
Opps, sorry, that should have been "YUK", not "yuck"
Also, when I compare "rights", I don't mean legal rights, obviously. I mean rights in the sense of human interaction. Like as in, at what point does one become a dick if one insists on doing something that interferes with other people trying to pursue some type of enjoyment.
I still stand firmly grounded. If someone told me to be quiet at a concert, they would receive a 'fuck you' or an equivalent gesture/phrase.
I thought Irvine was much better than Shoreline. They were more consistant at Irvine with higher energy than Shoreline and Marysville blew them both away.
People chatting loudly do suck balls, not only do they show no respect to the people around them trying to listen they show no respect to the artist playing the music. Some people just seem to have been raised by babboons.
For the sake of argument, I'm going to jump in here on the side of Ryan X, the way the old man in "12 Angry Men" does in defense of Henry Fonda (or Jack Lemmon in the remake).
You guys are starting to sound a bit righteous here, like the Van Morrison crowd, who do regard his shows as "church," and wet their pants anytime someone whispers, stands up to dance, or even moves their little finger...It is usually met with a middle finger...C'mon, folks, it's a rock concert.
Now, I'll that admit some of the neatest times at Dead shows were a couple of Stella Blues at the Oakland Coliseum (12/16/92 & 1/26/93) when 12,000 people were absolutely silent...you could hear a pin drop (cliché)...and it was powerful shit. Gave the song so much intensity with everybody breathless, hanging on each note.
That's not happening at Madison Square Garden, or I guess in Atlanta, where even during the quietest moments, you'll hear someone yelling "Whooooooo," or "Go Jeerrrrry." But, you know, I'm fine with that as long as it's not TOO MUCH talk, or too consistently LOUD.
Matter of fact, a well-timed shout can enhance audience tapes. One of the greatest shrieks in bootleg history occurred during the very first Terrapin on 2/26/77 when a woman lets out a joyous whoop after the line "eyes alight with glowing hair, all that fancy paints as fair.'' She was obviously moved, and shouted. What's wrong with that?
Clearly when listening to audience tapes, you begin to understand it's sort of a East Coast vs. West Coast thing. West Coasters are more (too?) mellow. I'm a proud and loud New Yorker. We're passionate people.
I remember being at a Morrison/Dylan/Mitchell gig at the Pauley Pavilion in LA when someone turned around and told us to be quiet. Like Ryan, I was appalled. Here we were in town with old friends, catching up, perhaps discussing a sax solo, I don't remember what, but we were barely above a whisper. Didn't tell him 'fuck you,' though. I said, "Oh, I'm sorry...we're from New York, and we're used to Dead shows where people party and have fun." Guess I was wrong.
[I do subscribe to what was said above: if you want to do a lot of drinking and socializing, go to the beer garden/bar/backstage area (if you have strength). That's why I love Shorleine so much because there are so many cool places to hang I'm rarely in my seat.]
>>The volume on the lawn was pitiful...
Yeah, it's true...
And the biggest problem is that they have a delay between the lower speakers and the lawn speakers so the sound is muddy.
Shoreline's in my backyard yet I refuse to even go to a show unless I have seats no farther than 10 rows back in the second section. Now with those seats, or better yet, 1st section seats, the sound is outstanding IMO.
>>even during the quietest moments, you'll hear someone yelling "Whooooooo," or "Go Jeerrrrry." But, you know, I'm fine with that as long as it's not TOO MUCH talk, or too consistently LOUD.

Not a thing. As I said in my earlier post: >>Now, I'm no taper. Whoops, yells, claps, even actual dialog, inspired by your actually paying some attention to the music - more than welcome. <<
The problem is when people talk incessantly, with no awareness or relation to the music. No, it ain't church, but it ain't an f'in bar with canned music either.
>>I'm going to jump in here on the side of Ryan X, the way the old man in "12 Angry Men" does in defense of...<<<
What a coincidence... I just watched the remake of this outstanding movie last night and I gotta say, I don't get your comparison at all...
What? You think people on this board would complain about an isolated "YEEHAW", or a well placed "FUCK YEAH WARREN!!". Sounds like you're the one jumping to a guilty verdict without the facts...
What we are talking about are the people you said you aren't "OK" with:
>>But, you know, I'm fine with that as long as it's not TOO MUCH talk, or too consistently LOUD.<<
Just so you know where I'm coming from , here's my Shoreline story:
The sun is beaming on the back of the stage which seems to give the Here Comes Sunshine opener a certain appropriatness. The crowd is on it's feet and everyone around looks really stoked.
Right when they start up, a sparrow-ish type bird begins making circles above our heads and I imagine (in my shroomy state) that it's Jerry's spirit coming to bless the festivities...
In the row in front of me are two, sweet older mammas who look like they've been on many a tour. They get into their dance groove right away and it looks like our section is actually there to experience the show...... WRONG!
About halfway through this wonderful first song, a guy comes and stands in front of these two ladies and starts talking [loudly] to them with his back to the stage.
He was a middle aged, short, balding dude who looked unnaturally tanned. He was sporting a goatee, gold chain, multiple gold ear hoops, and he was dressed like a disco boy.
So instead of the stage, I get to look at this guy's mug, and instead of hearing the intricacies of the music, I'm hearing BLAH BLAH BLAH...
Finally, during Jack Straw, he leaves and we get back into our groove, but he keeps showing up throughout the show with other talkie people he's stubbed down... and each new arrival feels compelled to tell the ladies some "really important" story [during songs].
So I ask you Georgie1, are you gonna defend them? Are they the poor mis-understood, disadvantaged minorities like the defendant in 12 Angry Men?
I sure as hell don't see it that way.
SKULLCAP asked:
>>Does any one have any theories about why the loud talking issue is worse now than ever before?<<
It's my opinion that these folks are closed off. They're not comfortable with normal human feelings, especially their own, so they talk as a form of defense (best defense is a good offense, right?)
They know if they let the music open them up, then others might actually see some of who they Are (OH, THE HORROR!).
But offensive behavior at a lovefest (like a Dead show) is just that: OFFENSIVE (you listenin' Ryan_X?).
Wow, I didn't know it was on...But I love that part during the silent vote when the old man gives Lemmon his support "for going out on a limb."
I thought Ryan went out on a limb and I gave him my support. Because I think it's just as rude to tell someone to be quiet, unless they're REALLY carrying on, like the disco dudes you mention.
And I'd NEVER go to security unless they're lighting fireworks and my life was in danger or something. (No offense, Dew.)
I'm not at all impressed with any of the posts here regarding why people may chatter at concerts.
You all should be embarrassed. You're really showing your asses.
It's alright though. Live and learn friends.
>>> You should be embarrassed. You're really showing your asses...
A projection [of yours] that doesn't apply to me and that I don't accept.
I have never really been bothered by people yelling or talking at a Dead concert. Why?
Because I don't stay in one spot very long. I dance from place to place. If I find a great dance spot with lots of dancers, I may stay for a long time. But if I find there is an obnoxious ass hole some where, I just move to an other place.
My bigger gripe than talkers, are people who just stand in an area with a bunch of dancers. I'm talking about way in the back where there is lots of room, and they have other, better sounding places they could stand like a statue.
But this is quite rare. But back around '87 or '88 it would happen more often though.
Oh and I don't ever think I've seen dancers talking and being loud.
Excellent Hall!
I was going to call him on that use of language.
"You should be embarrassed"
How absurd to think that someone knows how I should feel.
Well Ryan, you have been awarded my Douchebag Of The Year Award for your inconsiderate attitude, why do you even go go to shows??? Just to ruin someone elses trip?? If that is the case, you must be a Republican......
Does any one know where we can write to inform the Dead organization about the pitiful sound at the shoreline? I suggest that we get a e-mail writing campaign going in order to make sure they know that there were issues with the sound. I thought it was a great show, but I had to try too hard to get into it due to the low volume. I like being enveloped in the sound.
>I think I remember hearing that when Graham was given the go ahead to build this place, noise concerns were an issue, and he was given a max decibel figure. is that accurate?
no what happened was shoreline was built and then all these temperance league granny types moved to shallow (palo) alto and then started complaining when the sound was bouncing off the overcast and into their homes when they have the windows open.
so they b!tched about the noise. and then the dump was given noise limits.
but mostly I blame paul mccartney for messing it up for everyone when he blasted out the soccer field at UC Berkeley--in 1990, was it? he generated so many complaints that even the Greek Theatre (not the venue where paul and his band performed) was given decibel limits and the limits steamrolled to all the outdoor venues in the bay area afterwards--having been in place ever since.....
hey alex...cry me a river. Maybe you should try relaxing and stepping down off your high horse. Don't be knocking ATL, guy.
>>>I still stand firmly grounded. If someone told me to be quiet at a concert, they would receive a 'fuck you' or an equivalent gesture/phrase.
And if that person was me you would be escorted out on your ass.
I am marrying someone from Atlanta, count two others in this "scene" as very good friends and have met alot of others. I am quite sure they would be embarressed by someone with your attitude, and, less than tolerant.
>>>>>> And if that person was me you would be escorted out on your ass.
Not @ Darien Lake - Security basically stood there and laughed as these X-ed out asswipes swarmed my 3rd row seat - had to take things into my own hands and start literally beating the crap outta 'em - well the males at least - the 1 girl in their possee got my middle finger up her buttcrack and her nipples squeezed a few times - she was so X-ed out she loved it!!! Woo Hoo!!!!
With people like some of you around no wonder the Dead scene went to shit.
Something to really be proud about, right guys?
We do agree on one thing, we are generally disgusted by others that call themselves fans of the Grateful Dead, or even worse, Deadheads.
I hope your children turn out better.
What do plan to do here on the Zone Ryan?
Scold people? You seem really into scolding.
Do you belive it to be effective?
this show review has become a rant on show behavior....and i did indeed put my two cents in above....but back to the bottom line, the music. some are there for something else, often my experience has been that most are there for the party, but to those who do come for the show (and the zone proves that it IS MORE THAN 1 in ten thousand, thanks for sharing that groove....
brent, thanks for the good words...i had to come back to az.....agreed to go with my momma to alaska on a cruise she saved for for 5 years, and she bought the tix right when red rocks was announced for the same week. i booked it back on a red eye from anchorage to dallas then tucson day of phoenix show, made it west, but done now. all vacation time done for summer, and all inspired to try to make it east anyway...looking doubtful....
and now back to our regularly scheduled reviews...
Now let's all relax and listen to the music.
On another note, I do not think that my friend Ryan's presence at any show would have a detrimental effect to the scene. Quite the reverse!
>>I do not think that my friend Ryan's presence at any show would have a detrimental effect..
Yeah, Ryan's prolly just stirin' the pot...
As for me, I'm pretty much only there for the music and this show was very sweet. I've done my share of moshpits and stagediving, but this music doesn't warren that type of behavior... it's so much deeper.
And I don't feel sorry for anyone whose children learn to respect their brothers and love where the music takes them [spiritually].
AMEN
Gosh S. Frank, you had to take a Cruise of Alaska? The horror, horror! And then you had to jet back to take a tour with the Dead?
Such hardship!
Everyone send out good vibes for AZHead.
But seriously, did you get in Marysville? I hope so.
Love, Brent
didnt go to marysville i was home by then glued to the zone watching the reviews and lists, sd birthday show was it on the west or i'd have been fired, much as the closeness of irvine was a hard pull on my strings...
yeah yeah, HAD to go to alaska with my mother, the alaska part was awesome, the mother part a bit trying....came out to her as a cannabis lover however, to blank stares....told her if i had one i'd be up on deck smoking , watching the sun not really go down, and she was horrified....couldn't understand my need to make flights so i could see a "concert". had a shower on sunday, thenhad to pack the bags that werent carry on's for the ship to get them to the airport, left ship monday am, hours to kill in anchorage (loved it, weather perfect) and experienced first tremor, last shuttle to airport to find that flight delayed, finally left anchorage round midnight, 7 hours to dallas, a few hours later on flight to tucson, and a few hours after that in the show in phoenix, what a whirlwind! on to SD after dancing in the phoenix heat, a few hours in a rest area, made the hotel wednesday so ready for a hot shower.....and there was no hot water (best western chula sucks- the manager insulted the heads)...
BUT! the whole other side of that diatribe on travel and the expectation of hot shower was that the only 2 shows and the "boat ride" so completely overshawdowed the neurotic mother, (and inherited neurosis about air travel) that i was on a real spiritual high for many days.....and although i wish my vaca time had been able to cover more shows, i did get enough "juice" to hold me for a bit....
thanks brent...
Hate to bring you back to reality Ryan, but the Dead scene went to shit because of inconsiderate, disrespectful people like yourself,so you only have to look in the mirror to see why the scene and the world is where it is today.Don't get me wrong,I'm all about having a good time, but I make sure my good time doesn't negatively affect anyone else. It's called being mindful of others, you might learn that sometime in this life or maybe not.As the old saying goes,uh hmm,you are either part of the problem or part of the solution........
Uh, Fillmore Butts, you're negatively affecting me. You are the problem. I am the solution.
Yeah you are the solution, the solution of being a complete thoughtless jackass.Have fun kid,and I do mean kid,cuz your immaturity just keeps shining through.Glad I'm not from Atlanta,I feel sorry for the people that have to put up with the likes of you on a daily basis!!!!
Once again, completely unimpressed. Not even a good try Fillmore Butts.
oh this thread has raelly deteriorated but it was a special show, really and I may get back to the big ole show review if I can come down enough to write it.....wow and we thought it was so good!
Oso Rojo
Look at your own responses Ryan if you really want to be unimpressed. Now,will you excuse my back.......

Day after my birthday. Fond memory. Obviously no one else has thought about it in awhile either.
